WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Eighteen Straight Whiskeys

Thank you for taking a look at this Czar. Do you think you could also post something about this on the creator's user talk page. They have declared a COI with respect to the author, but I don't think they're trying to sneak anything by anyone by creating the article without going through AfC. They've submitted other drafts to AfC for review; so, perhaps they just thought that they could speed things up a bit by not doing so this time. New Member Seeking to Update Article on Elizabethan Poet Samuel Daniel

I have never written or updated an article on Wikipedia, but I would very much like to update the article on Samuel Daniel, a poet, playwright and author who was a contemporary of Shakespeare's. I'm in the process of writing an entirely new article (the one there is incomplete and inaccurate). I would appreciate any practical advice on the logistics of posting such an article. Poetry Society of America medals/awards

Do you people here believe each award/medal of Poetry Society of America have enough notability to merit a Wikipedia article for just the awards? I've looked through them and they're lacking the significant, independent, reliable, secondary coverage devoted to each of the awards/medals. Larry D. Thomas

I was wondering if anyone could help look for sources and give input on the deletion discussion for Larry D. Thomas. I'm not asking anyone to vote in favor of notability - I'd rather have an article deleted than to canvass - but I do want some input from people more savvy with the world of poetry. Thomas is the poet laureate for Texas and has received some coverage for his works, but it would be good to find more coverage if possible - can anyone perform a search to see if there's more? Publisher and ISBN for lists of poet's publications

It's not necessarily a bad thing for publications that are unlikely to have a second edition or multiple publishers, but is it normal to include the first-edition publisher and ISBN in a list of the author's works? The approach at Carol Smallwood strikes me as unusual. • Not necessarily unusual. This is more of a bibliography style question than poetry per se but the default is to just do title and year. Boundless trivia at The Lady of Shalott

I have removed most of the "cultural" reference sections of this article, which comprised bare mentions without context. See Talk:The_Lady_of_Shalott#Cultural_influence. They were largely restored by 5.173.104.233 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). Though he has been writing poetry for most of his (73 years of) life, that section of his page is sorely lacking. Advice on covering individual sonnets in a volume of sonnets?

I've been working my way through coverage of Charlotte Turner Smith and have gotten a bit stymied by how to structure the article on her volume Elegiac Sonnets. I have started a few articles on individual sonnets from the volume: Sonnet V, Sonnet XLIV, and Sonnet LXX. These, and other sonnets, are frequently anthologized and discussed, so I think they meet WP:GNG. But, I don't think they will ever be incredibly long and detailed articles, even when the context and literature is fully addressed. So, it might be better to merge them into the Elegiac Sonnets article. (Someone has already proposed merging Sonnet LXX with Smith's biography article but I think Elegiac Sonnets is the more natural home). However, that seems likely to produce a very long and overly detailed article on Elegiac Sonnets. Am I being too precious about the various poetic details? Or overlooking a way of reorganizing the Elegiac Sonnets article that would make sense?

I started writing sonnet articles because I wanted students to be able to easily look up useful background information when these poems are assigned in class, which still feels valuable. I was planning to do all 5 sonnets that appear in at least 2 of the standard anthologies, plus a few others like Sonnet V which have a lot of sources talking about their sources & influence. But now I am questioning my approach.

I'd really appreciate advice or bold edits from other editors: should the individual sonnets be merged in to a larger article? What's the best way to do so? Thank you! ~ oulfis 🌸(talk) 22:41, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

Samuel Daniel

I have recently completely revised the article on the early modern English poet, playwright and historian Samuel Daniel. The old one was both incomplete and inaccurate. For anyone interested, I would greatly appreciate if you would review it and offer feedback. "Song of Innocence"

Why is "Song of Innocence" listed under Featured Articles in WikiProject Poetry? It's about a jazz album. Would the connection to Blake's "Songs of Innocence" be enough to justify the listing? Heilprin (talk) 19:46, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

About Category:Poets from Sicily

Is there any reason why Category:Poets from Sicily only includes certain languages? I don't see why it should exclude Greek or Latin poets. Theocritus should probably be in this category, and even if we exclude Magna Graecia I think including people like Antonio Beccadelli who wrote in Latin, would be useful. --Yellow Diamond Δ Direct Line to the Diamonds 03:58, 25 August 2021 (UTC)

Draft:Bio Poem

I've done a little looking, and there is some evidence that a "bio poem" is a recognized term for a category of writing, so maybe an article by that name could be written. However, what I find are bio poems as teaching exercises, as in this 2001 book and this 2003 exercise. This article (which is not a reliable source) is a free-to-access example of the kind of thing I am finding. However, the first bio poem was not a 2019 book, and the draft you have linked is not a useful introduction to bio poems, especially since it does not draw on WP:RELIABLE sources. If you are truly interested in bio poems, you will need to look in places where people talk about teaching, to find reliable sources which write about when, how, and why teachers started using "bio poem" class exercises.

I suspect you are actually interested in making an article about the book A Peerless Gem. That is not a good idea, since a book should only be on Wikipedia if it meets one of the criteria defined at WP:BOOKCRIT, and I can't find even one review of this book. Also, creating a new article is one of the hardest things to do on wikipedia, and isn't a good idea until after you've done a lot of other editing.

If you are interested in poetry on wikipedia, I suggest that you think about your favourite thing you read in school, find the wikipedia page which should already exist for that poem, and see how you can improve it. Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard (Thomas Gray)

It seemed to me that the article omits five verses, i.e. twenty lines, from this Thomas Gray composition (my source -https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/44299/elegy-written-in-a-country-churchyard ). The first of these lines gave Victorian writer Thomas Hardy the title for his first major literary success.

From the first line of first omitted verse...

     "Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife,"
        

...To the last line of the fifth omitted verse

     "Ev'n in our ashes live their wonted fires."

Hello Jaeysim, yes the "poem" section appears to alternate between quoting and paraphrasing, and actually leaves out several large chunks of the poem. Looking at it myself, I actually think it would be most appropriate to remove all of the poem quoted in the article, and replace it with a summary, since the poem is too long to include in full (and anyway is in Wikisource). Incidentally, a good source for the poem's text is here (more scholarly/reliable than Poetry Foundation). If you wished to rewrite that section to provide a succinct summary, I think that would be very valuable. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 05:12, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

Help starting an article for a poetry journal

Hi, would anyone be interested in starting an article stub for a new poetry journal, Red Ogre Review? Our editors are all recent graduates of Lancaster University's Creative Writing Masters program (department link) and the journal is a member of CLMP (CLMP listing), if that would be helpful. I would start the page myself, but since I'm the founder and head editor, I think that would count as one of those discouraged conflicts of interest. Any help is much appreciated!

Poetic form category

So I was looking up poetic forms, and then hit the category section, but then it's missing forms in the master list. The poetic forms by nation or language is down to a handful. There are categories for specific countries, but they are disconnected. For example, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Korean_poetry does not show up in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Poetic_form_by_nation_or_language

So I'm asking for someone, though a tiny bit dull type of work to fix this. It's missing the whole of Latin America, Indigenous populations, and Africa, not to mention the South Pacific, e.g. Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands? =P

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Poets Laureate cleanup

Hi, I have been working on cleanup of both the poet laureate and List of U.S. states' poets laureate articles--both of which were badly out of date. I am currently creating individual list articles for those states that have had more than one poet laureate representing them, and linking back to those articles under the state subheadings, as well creating poetry navigational boxes that link the individual poets laureate together. Others are certainly welcome to join in creating either the state pages or the navboxes. So far this is about 50% done.

While doing this I've also noticed many different poets laureate articles linked in these navboxes could potentially use some improvement as they have been tagged for things like bibliography, inline citations, and external links clean up. Many of these state poets laureate also do not even have an article despite their title making them notable. This is a huge undertaking though. Kiddo27 (talk) 17:55, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

Okay, this is done. Every state (except Massachusetts which has no program, and Arizona and Pennsylvania which have only had one laureate) now has an article and an a navigational box for poets laureate that links them all together. Kiddo27 (talk) 13:23, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. People in the year 2023 who write Epistolary poetry in the form of love letters which is a lost art

The Epistolary form of poetry is making a come back, and I happen to be one of the poets who writes them with a prominent poet and Professor in India. I live in the United States. We have written 130 Epistolary Poems so far, and although I am not familiar with how to write or change articles on Wikipedia yet, I would like to participate in any project that will enhance poetry Internationally. The Professor and I have an anthology coming out in about a month of Epistolary Poems and we are quite popular. It is a beautiful form of poetry and I would like to pursue any article for the sake of the art of poetry, (Especially Epistolary), and literature in general. Thank you. Illustrations in Catullus' Poems

I would like to attract attention to the slow-moving discussion about the illustrations in Catullus 3 (see Talk:Catullus 3#Illustration): currently two videos are in the lead that replaced the original image of an old painting on the subject (cf.
