The 1st Great Wikipedia Dramaout took place from July 18 to July 22, 2009. Similar to the Great American Smokeout, editors were asked to engage in a five-day period of abstinence from drama at Wikipedia, the most addictive and yet cancerous aspect of our community. During this five-day drama blackout, regular contributors to the non-article-space areas of Wikipedia ceased working in those areas for the length of the Dramaout and instead worked on article content. With the exception of areas deemed essential to improving articles directly, all participating editors voluntarily abstained from non-article edits.

Notice to participating editors edit

Thank you for your support of this project. Please continue to update the log as articles you worked on during the campaign are promoted for DYK/GA/FA status. The Dramaout article-improvement log is located at Wikipedia:The Great Wikipedia Dramaout/Log.

  9. I will master the chaotic path of simultaneously engaging in drama while not doing so. Tyciol (talk) 09:06, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  10. Dramaout seems irresponsible to me. If nobody works on the normal maintenance, the workload gets unnecessarily heavy for the rest of us. Firestorm Talk 20:25, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  11. This all reminds me of the "So how's that working out for you?", "What?", "Being clever?" dialog from Fight Club. Tarc (talk) 01:07, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  14. "Drama" is a pejorative used by drama queens to try to accuse others of making them sad. There is no way to take a vacation from it, and I suggest the "Dramaout" is a big drama fit being pitched by the queeniest of them all. Geogre (talk) 19:56, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  15. We don't have nearly enough drama on Wikipedia. Pzrmd (talk) 06:36, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  16. Like the idea but don't like how it's formulated. Calling "drama" the discussions going on on the reference desks or policy talk pages doesn't seem appropriate. Laurent (talk) 14:31, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  2. fail, you can't have "NODRAMA" with out drama, note the paradox. Antonio López (desu) 17:30, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And you can't have DRAMA without a DRAM, so what'll you have? MuZemike 01:33, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  3. What if this is your modus operandi normally? Just 5 days? Everyone should stfu and get to work for 360 more days. I find this particularly useful with my "Gah! Shut up and leave me alone!" approach. Not so helpful with a project dependent upon community collaboration, but it gets more done than arguing. --Moni3 (talk) 19:45, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Then we would have 1 day every four years to create as much drama as possible. Then we go back to ignoring it for another four years. :) iMatthew talk at 19:49, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  4. I'm thinking about gradually getting back into Wikipedia; I may or may not edit WP:RFA and other pages. But I applaud the editors who've signed the pledge, and am waiting to see which ones actually honour it. Me? I can't make promises that I'm not sure I can keep. 6. Judging by this comment by an Arbitrator the whole affair looks like a disruption. A vacation would be fairer and uncontroversial. NVO (talk) 14:15, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Looks like a pretext for people who contribute little content to get sanctimonious about it. My first encounter with this project was an unexpected email from someone who, in a decidedly condescending tone, was asking me to put featured content drives on the back burner in order to advise him not on content but on a little pet project he was devising. I won't say what his ops were but they were very very high (among the highest) and a review of his last 500 article space edits might earn him the title The Great Redirector. Further details, which I won't elaborate here, left an even worse aftertaste. At that time I had six featured content candidacies active across two WMF projects, and am currently nominating a restored version of the Charge of the Light Brigade for featured picture consideration, which seems strangely apt. It is facile and unproductive to foster the notion that any participation at all on certain pages is "cancerous". No one runs a factory with the assumption that it's morally flawed to do anything other than assemble widgets on the assembly line. I'll go right on doing what I was doing: work hard, think hard, and talk hard. Get off your high horses. Durova280 16:28, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  8. Noticed the same comment that NVO helpfully links. Any failure by me to contribute to current dramaz is due to Wikisloth, note that I'm not in a position to use its alternative name as that is apparently a blockable offence for jannies. p.s. is signing this prohibited drama? . . dave souza, talk 19:08, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
