Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited National Women's Soccer League owners, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Brian Sullivan. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hello and welcome to the March 2023 newsletter, a quarterly digest of Guild activities since December and our Annual Report for 2022. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below. We extend a warm welcome to all of our new members, including those who have signed up for our current March Backlog Elimination Drive. We wish you all happy copy-editing.

Election results: In our December 2022 coordinator election, Reidgreg and Tenryuu stepped down as coordinators; we thank them for their service. Incumbents Baffle gab1978, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis and Zippybonzo were returned as coordinators until 1 July. For the second time, no lead coordinator was chosen. Nominations for our mid-year Election of Coordinators open on 1 June (UTC).

Drive: 21 editors signed up for our January Backlog Elimination Drive, 14 of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. Between them, they copy-edited 170 articles totaling 389,737 words. Barnstars awarded are here.

Blitz: Our February Copy Editing Blitz focused on October and November 2022 requests, and the March and April 2022 backlogs. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine claimed at least one copy-edit; and between them, they copy-edited 39,150 words in 22 articles. Barnstars awarded are here.

Tatar Gypsy

Since others have now taken this article about the Tatar Gypys, I found something here for you all: This is interesting, with names of 4 different crimean Tatar gypys groups; https://montescalearning.com/GLOBVillage/files/SMILE/MUS_49_Segmentation.pdf, Here about too with there different group names: https://languagehat.com/tatars-and-non-tatars-in-the-crimea/ https://www.researchgate.net/publication/355873685_Turcoman_Gypsies_in_the_Balkans_Just_a_Preferred_Identity_or_More, this article also says interesting something about Tatar gypys in crimea if you read it completely, and the Tatar Gypys are not related to the Ursari or Ruska Roma. Interesting that all scholars refer to them as crimean gypys or tatar gypys. Only wikipedia english really wants the name roma. Anyway, I don't write in English wikipedia anymore. not good for foreigners who are not native english speakers. Tatarsko (talk) 12:37, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

Moran edits.

With respect to the reversed edits for Nicholas Moran (Not sure if this is the correct format for 'leaving a message'.)

The "Commands Held" edit does not need a citing to change to 1st Armored MCP-OD, it's prima facie incorrect as it is: A Lieutenant Colonel cannot hold command of 1st Armored Division. It's a 2-star billet, and the list of every commander is found here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Armored_Division_(United_States). The command is correctly stated further down the article as 1AD MCP-OD. L/1-221 Cav is not only displayed on the wall behind in most of the videos, but see also https://www.nevadaappeal.com/news/2009/apr/15/guardsmen-leave-for-duty-in-afghanistan/

The Allied Reaction Force thing being the wrong officer is stated at the bottom of the cited reference, https://mwi.usma.edu/why-gamers-will-win-the-next-war/ , expressly mentioning that the LtCol Moran in question is British Army.

With respect to citizenship, the cited link is from 2001. Commissioning happened in 2002. Dual citizenship is an issue per DODM 5200.02 and a quick Google search reveals multiple dual-citizens who had to renounce for commissioning.

Wife, daughter and son have all been publicly shown on either Youtube or Facebook. For example wife is addressed as 'wife' in this youtube, /19ELgtdM3os?t=1036 , son is here. https://www.facebook.com/TheChieftainArmor/photos/pb.100044382131095.-2207520000./2243584945681274/?type=3 70.120.89.135 (talk) 03:22, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

Martingale (clothing)

Hello, Wracking,

Please do not draftify articles or tag them for deletion immediately after they have been created, especially if editors are currently working on improving the article. Not all editors use Draft space, they create them directly into the main space and then work to improve them. I know that New Page Patrollers are advised to not tag articles until an hour has passed since the article has been created and this is a good rule of thumb to follow. It can also be more productive to contact the article creator on their User talk page rather than mess around with the article. Content creators are the most important people on Wikipedia and we don't want to discourage their articles by mishandling pages they are working on.

In general, do not be quick to draftify an article, use it primarily for pages created by brand new editors. Another good rule of thumb is not to draftify an article which has been created by an editor who has more editing experience than you do. They probably know what they are doing. Thank you. Liz Read! @Eric Hockey, Besides copy editing, I generally don't work on hockey history right now. As for expanding Horace Gaul, I'd recommend looking for local newspapers of the towns he lived or played in and seeing if any hockey biographies have covered him. You can also use the links below, which auto-populate the search field with his name.

Please stop defaming India and its democatic organisations unnecessarily irrespective of whatever views and political inclinations you haveyou have.I urge you to contibute in keeping wikipedia unpolarised and unbiased and a truuly free encyclopedia which provides only pure knowledge.Kindly correct that article at the earliest.

What's with the non-breaking space after dash?

In edits like this one you're randomly inserting nbsps after dashes. Normally, an nbsp is preferred before an en dash, if at all, so the dash will be at the end of a line and not the start, as in Template:spd or Template:snd. Dicklyon (talk) 04:48, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

@Dicklyon - Not on purpose! I think I have a script running (likely wikiEd?) that's doing that :/ sorry for the disturbance! It usually makes helpful changes, but you're right, this one's weird. 2023 Canadian Wildfires

Please be more mindful before making accusations on folks talk pages. You made a false claim of removing references, none were removed on my part, and the material you claimed I removed, I simply moved to a different section discussing the topic at hand, to make for better better continuity and readability.

I can see why you may have been confused by interim edits; please be more mindful making accusations in the future.

Thanks for your editing. Crescent77 (talk) 23:55, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

I did not mean to imply that you removed refs (the unclear wording was completely my fault), or to make accusations. I've replied on your talk page, being more clear about the specific issue. Thanks! Wracking talk! 00:04, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
Sorry if I was a little short. I'm well aware climate change is contentious here on WP, it's all too common when making changes for the sake of accuracy to be challenged by either/both climate activists and climate deniers who want language used that better fits their narrative, and are willing to abandon good faith to make it so. Crescent77 (talk) 00:34, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
No worries, I'm glad we could clear things up. I also didn't mean to come across as short, and hope I didn't! Best, Wracking talk! 00:38, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

2023 Stanley Cup Finals

Hi there! I noticed this edit [2] you made recently at 2023 Stanley Cup Finals. I really appreciate you adding in the abbreviations. It helps add to the quality and readability of these articles. However, I noticed you capitalized the abbreviations, thereby making them acronyms. While that isn't an issue, it does make it inconsistent with the 14 (not withstanding a mediocre 2008) prior Stanley Cup Finals articles. It also makes it inconsistent with the infobox tables created with each game recap in the playoffs articles (that's about 120 articles) which use italics. That being said, I don't particularly find it problematic to make the switch, but because that's approximately 4000 "pp", "sh", and "en" to change. If you have a quicker way of implementing this change, I'm all ears. Otherwise, I'll likely revert. Conyo14 (talk) 02:52, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

Edit, I won't revert the edit completely, just make them italics lowercase again. Conyo14 (talk) 02:54, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

A message from 164.76.12.58

164.76.12.58 (talk) 04:19, 30 August 2023 (UTC)I added a section on the Steven Stamkos article describing his playing style and leadership and quotes that a different user tried to do but did too much. I brought back some of the things initially said by that other user gymrat16 but not all because I don't want to make the same mistake that user did by creating too many quotes or too many sentences and just enough to prove those sentences about his playing style and leadership. Other players like Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin, Kane, The Sedins, Iginla, etc have that as well and Stamkos is obviously a big star of his generation too and should be described as well. I looked at the articles on some of those other players mentioned and did my best to organize it like it is on them. Can you look at it and tell me how I did? Thanks and appreciate the help and I look forward to continuing to contribute to our community to the best of my ability while also making sure I follow the rules like notb being run on and making srue I cite everything and make sure I have correct spelling and grammar and beware other peoples thoughts too

About Yonkers

I won't edit the article until copyediting is finished by the Guild of Copy Editors, but I do have a question regarding the Yonkers, New York article.

Regarding the one section about Southeast Yonkers, it is indeed an Irish American area. These sources prove it [3] [4] [5]. I know this sentence needs clarification but what's the best way I can do so? The Cadillac Ranger (talk) 01:19, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for checking in. I usually fix issues myself, but in this case there was no source to check. I have removed the tag and added the cites you provided. I hope to be done with the copy edit in the next few days! Wracking talk! 02:12, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
Also, I wanted to point out to you about the sentence mentioning the Waring Hat Company (in the Industrial history section), this source is useful for that sentence and provides a clue about it. It mentions the Waring Hat Company several times. The Cadillac Ranger (talk) 19:31, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
Additionally, the Guild of Copy Editors template was removed from the article. I hope you don't mind if I add that source. The Cadillac Ranger (talk) 03:45, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
No, that's alright! Adding sources is fine, it just gets a bit confusing when article contents face large changes (e.g., new sections/rearrangement). I think I'm fairly close to being done, sometimes it's just about being in the right headspace though   Wracking talk! 03:50, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

On Article Sexual violecne

Hey there, I saw you worked on the article, firstly thanks for fixing the professor Herzig section. Secondly, I saw you removed lots of quotes and info. Can you please explain the reasoning regarding the removal of lots of info? I did not want to do a partial revert without understanding the reasoning. Also of course I appreciate the dedication :). Homerethegreat (talk) 08:45, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for reaching out.
The quotes were generally overly-detailed. As most were eyewitness accounts, this can easily go into WP:DUE issues. Additionally, when possible, we should summarize rather than include long quotes (see MOS:QUOTE). I did my best not to alter the meaning of the quotes when I trimmed them.
Removals in the "international law" section were, again, related to content that was overly-detailed. Additionally, this likely verges on WP:SYNTH without sources referring to both these specific international laws and the October 7 events. I think trimming that content helps it be more encyclopedic.
I think that covers most of the trimming I did. Let me know if you have any more questions. Wracking talk! 09:20, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the explanation. I decided to include quotes since I felt it was best to not try and summarize them which I felt may not accurately reflect their statement. Of course I appreciate the help. It's complicated and I'm happy you worked on making it more encyclopedic. Do you think there is no room at all for a quote? I want to continue building the article and I feel its better to include quotes so if you could share your decision process it could help me decide when or how to include relevant info. Thanks for the big help :). Homerethegreat (talk) 21:45, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
There are still many quotes in the article, but constantly citing individual witness testimonies is not very encyclopedic (especially WP:DUE), especially if those testimonies aren't notable/widely reported themselves. Wracking talk! 04:12, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
I understand this point, however regarding the short description, I think it's best that there is a short description. Can you explain your reasoning? Homerethegreat (talk) 08:18, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

A message from Diyac.arts

Hi, it is indeed a violation of NPOV, it may be true that the "comparison" has been made, but the sources cited are neither academic nor scholarly. Secondly, the comment has nothing to do with the topic of the article. It's purely an injection of opinion cited as fact. If this statement and citation were to be used (although it is not relevant to the article), it would have to also cite and quote a source that more accurate presents Milei's political views of which are radically different from both Bolsanaro and Trump [1]. Javier Milei's positions himself as an Anarcho-Capitalist [2], Libertarian[3], and holds true to Austrian School of Economics [4]. So if there's an injection of unresearched bias, without presenting both perspectives. Then it is indeed a violation NPOV.[5] Diyac.arts (talk) 20:37, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

A message from Ariadne000

Hi Wracking. I have spent quite a few hours translating the Spanish article, references, and footnotes on Caridad Mercader (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caridad_Mercader#CITAREFGorkin2001). The English stub had an annotation asking for a translation of the lengthy Spanish article and I decided to do it on a whim. (I looked up Ramon Mercader when he was cited as Trotsky's assassin in a documentary on Stalin and clicked on the link to his mother's Wikipedia page out of curiosity. Caridad Mercader--a Soviet agent who influenced her son to assassinate Trotsky--made the "Mother from Hell" in The Manchurian Candidate look like Mother of the Year.) (English version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caridad_Mercader)

Completely underestimating the amount of effort involved, I easily translated the Spanish article into English using Google Translate and editing the translation for sense and flow (I am bilingual in English and Spanish). The challenge has been in updating and entering the hundreds of references in the Spanish article to build the list of references and bibliography in the English version. The numbering is different in the Spanish and English versions since the English stub contained footnotes independent of the Spanish version. I have placed the original Spanish reference numbers within the English text so I can use them to enter the Spanish references into the automatic numbering scheme.

The "Named References" mechanism is not working for me. I have spent hours reentering references that should have just been a matter of clicking on "Named References" and entering page citations. At present there are error messages citing the duplicate entries and I could really use the help of an expert to guide me in cleanup and before I lose 93 references that I have already re-entered painstakingly. There remain about 70 additional references and 50 footnotes with English translations to re-enter. Would you please take a look at the references entered so far and advise me on how to best clean up the error messages and come up with a cleanly generated reference list and bibliography.

Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. (Note: After I have entered the references and bibliography, I also have to upload photos from the Spanish article into the English version. I have left the captions within the English text for the photos that will be uploaded in the final stage.)

Ariadne000 (talk) 03:20, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi Ariadne000,
Thanks for reaching out, and I apologize for my delayed response. I'm also English/Spanish bilingual and have done a bit of translation both ways. I understand how onerous the translation process can be and thank you for your efforts.
A few general translation/formatting notes:
  • English Wikipedia explicitly says that machine translations must be edited by humans (WP:MACHINE); you're on the right track here, but more editing of the text may be required. (I haven't reviewed the text, so you may have already done this!)
  • For future reference, I have found the Content Translation tool really helpful. Once you have more experience (500 edits), you can try it for your next translation. For translation to English Wikipedia, manual translation is not enabled in the tool, but I found it really helpful for translating templates and references.
  • If you want to link to an article that does not exist in English, use the template {{ill}} (inter-language link). For example, {{ill|Indiano|es}} produces Indiano. If Indiano is created, a bot will come by and replace the template with just the link! It's a very useful template. You can also use it for other languages— I most often use pt (Portuguese), de (German), and fr (French).
  • The images do not need to be re-uploaded to English Wikipedia, as they are all in Wikimedia Commons. Instead, you just use the pattern [[File:NAME|thumb|CAPTION]], where NAME is the file's name when you open it in Wikimedia Commons (for example, File:Capitania General Barcelona - façana.JPG) and CAPTION is whatever caption you've written. "thumb" specifies that the image size will be a thumbnail (the default for English Wikipedia).
The following syntax produces the following image:
[[File:Capitania General Barcelona - façana.JPG|thumb|Your caption here]]

Your caption here
As for your referencing troubles:
I hope some of this is helpful, even if I'm unable to help with the citation templates. Best, Wracking talk! 05:42, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi Wracking. Thanks for responding. I didn't have a problem with translation. Google Translate did a good job and I just edited to fix improper translation and flow.
I have uploaded the images from the Spanish article into the English version without any difficulty. I tried adding a photo of Caridad as an young adult and as a older woman, but I'm not sure it will pass scrutiny for copyright, even though the older image dates to 1910 and the newer is earlier than 1978 (I have received a notice that they are under review and suspect they will be deleted).
I was able to do the footnotes without any problem, as well as the links between terms and related Wikipedia articles.
My remaining problem are the references because I didn't properly define the long form in the beginning and created several long forms of the same citation that now causes a problem when I try to use the short form because it creates an error that the mechanism has a conflict with which long reference form to use. I will probably have to go back and delete all but one of the long forms where there is duplication so that the short form for each refers back to only one. I will probably take a breather before I do this because my frustration level is now high. I will reach out to Wham2001 when I decide to tackle the reference cleanup.
I definitely chose the wrong article to begin such a complicated expansion of a stub (I just had a passing interest in the subject and ended up spending much more time than anticipated), Up until now I have done much simpler additions to plot summaries that didn't require all the coding skills. I have learned a lot in the process, however, and will pick simpler articles until I have a stronger skill set.
Again, thanks for your encouragement and guidance. Ariadne000 (talk) 06:13, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
I can fix the sfn multiple-target errors when I get the chance – hopefully the next day or two. Best, Wham2001 (talk) 13:45, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, Wham2001, that would be very much appreciated. I learned my lesson to define the long form first and then do the short forms. what threw me is that there was an existing "Summary" with references on which I had to build and I was too green at the beginning to realize I was going about it in the most difficult way possible. Ariadne000 (talk) 07:53, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
In the end I was too slow and User-duck fixed the references before I got to them. I think that the article is now looking very good! Best, Wham2001 (talk) 10:56, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

A message from Robi1284

Do you mind holding off on edits on the John Bauters page? I and a few other students at Michigan State University are making edits for a finals grade. Some of the edits you're making can harm our grades. Not to mention, some of the information I included was relevant and had better grammar. Thanks. Robi1284 (talk) 22:02, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi Robi1284, I am bringing Ian (Wiki Ed) into this conversation about John Bauters.
I'm holding off on doing any further editing on the page as it doesn't appear to be productive. I think I overstepped, and I apologize if my edits were confusing. I do feel that your classmates have failed to operate in a collaborative nature with the rest of Wikipedia by continually reinstating your edits.
Your grade should not be based on your edits being "successfully" published on Wikipedia. My editing should have no implication on your grades.[6]
If you want to discuss the relevance and grammatical quality of your edits, that is a separate conversation that I am also willing to have. Thanks, Wracking talk! 22:20, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping Wracking. He's correct, Robi1284, your grade shouldn't be based on what "sticks" and you need to edit in a collaborative way, as part of the community. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:30, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

A message from Zakâriæ

In the article about the best African player, I think that putting the story of the coach and the club has nothing to do with the page dedicated to the best player only. You can put the story of the coach and the club on the official page. Zakâriæ (talk) 12:52, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello Zakâriæ, The content is about a boycott of the awards in response to a perceived snub in the African Footballer of the Year category, so the content is relevant to the article. Please discuss further issues at Talk:African Footballer of the Year. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Wracking talk! 18:10, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
True, but you also mention the coach, which is outside the topic of the article, which only talks about the best player af, The important thing is that it's okay, thanks for the answer. Zakâriæ (talk) 22:34, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
