UBC Frats

You may be hard pressed to find it at another university? What is that? Who do you think you are? UBC is a public university and Wikipedia is all up for adding information to it to make it a better and MORE COMPREHENSIVE website. UBC has a very strong Greek system and it should be equally reflected on their page on Wikipedia. Ok maybe not the second thing on the page I’ll give you that but it should not be at the bottom of the page. Fraternities and sororities help build relationships stronger than most friendships and provide strong connections for after university. if you are not a member of the Greek system which by your reaction I’m almost positive your not you would have no idea about this.

Semi-protection proposal

You wrote:

You know much as I'm sure there'll be huge advances in what we know about Chuck Norris in the next few months, can't we just lock the article for a significant length of time until he melts back into obscurity again? This constant reverting is getting stupid. They should have a setting on Wikipedia to lock individual articles against anonymous contributors but not registered people... Or do they have one already I just don't know about? It'd be cool if there could be a setting to stop anonymous posters and registered posters with less than a certain number of edits on certain heavily vandalised pages. --TastyCakes 00:53, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

There is a discussion (and a straw poll) taking place right now regarding just this. You may want to review Wikipedia_talk:Semi-protection_policy#Semi-protection_proposal_v.02 for details. Can't sleep, clown will eat me 10:37, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Regional-literacy-bar-graph.TC.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Regional-literacy-bar-graph.TC.png. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images on Wikipedia is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. You can get help on image copyright tagging from Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. -- Carnildo 03:38, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Albino gorilla.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Albino gorilla.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Hey, there. I've noticed this guy is hitting other articles and blanking, adding POV tags for petty reasons, etc. If you want to start an admin referal process (I don't know how to do that), I'll add my support to it. I'll also get people from the other articles to add their support. He isn't going to listen to reason from what I can see. John Smith's 21:30, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Ya it could probably use an admin. I have a feeling he'll just get bored and leave after a while though. I'm not sure how to refer to an admin either.. I'll try and find out. TastyCakes 21:39, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
I've asked for mediation. Would you like me to add your name to it? John Smith's 21:41, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
Sure. Looks like its getting a little heated.. ;) I've also left a message for an admin, don't know if they'll get back to me. TastyCakes 21:42, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
I would really appreciate it if you could stick with this, as he doesn't seem to want to leave it, unlike many other "unhelpful" editors. I was a little angry, but really he is being unreasonable to demand a reference for everything. John Smith's 21:56, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:All_Red_Line_Map_1902.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:All_Red_Line_Map_1902.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Unspecified source for Image:Syncrude mildred lake plant.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Syncrude mildred lake plant.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. 193.248.38.124 01:43, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Non-free use disputed for Image:Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School logo.jpg

  This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School logo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:11, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Purdys-logo.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Purdys-logo.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Purdy's

A tag has been placed on Purdy's requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Thedarxide (talk) 13:56, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Purdys-logo.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Purdys-logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 20:18, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:TR-55.gif

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:TR-55.gif. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 23:41, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Africa Oil Corp.svg

Image Copyright problem

Hi TastyCakes!
We thank you for uploading Image:Africa Oil Corp.svg, but there is a problem. Your image is currently missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. Unless you can help by adding a copyright tag, it may be deleted by an Administrator. If you know this information, then we urge you to add a copyright tag to the image description page. We apologize for this, but all images must confirm to policy on Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks so much for your cooperation.

Ryder Scott

The article Ryder Scott has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done because the article seemed to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it did not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the notability of the subject may be deleted at any time. If you can indicate why the subject is really notable, you are free to re-create the article, making sure to cite any verifiable sources.

Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and for specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for musicians, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. NawlinWiki (talk) 20:17, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

  • If you have sources showing that this company is notable per WP:CORP, feel free to repost. NawlinWiki (talk) 20:32, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
      • The article still doesn't cite independent sources to show the company's notability. The company's own website isn't independent. I've placed a proposed deletion tag on the article; if you add independent sources, feel free to remove it. NawlinWiki (talk) 20:58, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

If you object to the PROD nomination of Ryder Scott, you can just remove the PROD tag on it, although an explanation in the edit summary is recommended. But then, expect the article to go to WP:AFD if you can't provide sources. Corvus cornixtalk 21:15, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Enrolmentbysubject.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

What possible motive do you have for placing the word hollow in quotes and removing valid content?

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hollow - 5. without real or significant worth; meaningless: a hollow victory.

Jerkface03 (talk) 23:50, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

From what I can see from your edit history, you seem to have a boner for articles revolving around the oil industry. I'm REMOVING the quotes you put around the word hollow as you have no valid reason for having them there. If you don't like that, go chew glass. Jerkface03 (talk) 20:25, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

"As I said at the time, the duck deaths were a passing news story with little lasting consequence and so shouldn't have been added to the article." You can keep saying it until your face turns blue, but it won't change the fact that it's relevant, properly sourced, and meets Wikipedia's notability criteria.

Tough luck.

That was uncalled-for

What's with the really grotesquely nasty response on the Ref Desk: [1]?

I generally have no quarrel with calling a spade a spade, but have you got any reason to believe that the original poster is trolling us? It's entirely possible that it's someone who has some...interesting...beliefs about the energy flow in their house, and they're asking us to play fortune teller/feng shui advisor. While we don't usually provide those services at the Reference Desk, and while we many consider their beliefs to be less than sensible, there's no need to resort to calling them stupid trolls.

If you create a duplicate of a number and move it over to the right (using the arrow buttons) then press shift+G, it will turn the various points on the shape into guide lines. Remove most of them, leaving just the bottom one, and you'll have a line that the number will snap to so that it lines up. vıdıoman 17:32, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
I have no idea what font that is. Try looking through here. vıdıoman 18:50, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

New possible sock

Hello TastyCakes. Feel free to create a new sockpuppet report (it is too messy to de-archive the old one). As an alternative, maybe you could just send any new evidence to my User talk. What are the articles that both you and Aurush have edited? He does seem to have been on Wikipedia before. We need to figure out who he is a sock of before action can be taken (unless he is just a pure disruptive editor, a conclusion that I don't see yet). EdJohnston (talk) 16:41, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

What is your current thinking about WP:Suspected sock puppets/MiltonP Ottawa (2nd)? This SSP report should be dealt with, one way or the other. The report claims Aurush is a sock of MiltonP Ottawa. If that is not the case, perhaps the report should be closed. EdJohnston (talk) 23:44, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

I have to agree that Andrew Nellis does not seem to meet notability criteria at the moment. I'm going to keep watching though. He might. Baiter (talk) 05:31, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

ExxonMobil Reverts

Hello there, in view of our disagreement at ExxonMobil and your continued reverts there, I've reported the situation here. Hopefully an admin can come and clear this up for us. In the future, please edit in accordance to the three-revert rule. Thanks, TastyCakes (talk) 20:42, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

While doing this, I hope that you took some of your time to check at least one of the links. NothingWorthy (talk) 21:06, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
I read the links. You seem to misunderstand the argument being made against your edit. No one is saying that by some measures ExxonMobil is the most profitable company. We are saying there are other measures of what "profitable" means, and by some of them Exxon is not the "top dog". Because of this, we were saying it is better to use wording that is as clear as possible on this point, namely that they have the highest profits of any company. This is indisputable, unlike your wording. For example:
what do you mean Exxon is the most profitable, Apple made 6.3 billion in income on 32.5 billion in revenue! That's 20% return, clearly they are more profitable than Exxon's 10%!
No, that's not how I'm defining profitable here!
You see how using firmer, undisputed language will make it a better article? TastyCakes (talk) 21:12, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
First, use a better language here. What you are talking about is NOT called PROFITABILITY, it is called PROFITABILITY RATIOS, such as profit on sales or profit on stockholders' equity. Profitability means turning a profit, ex. "The company will return to profitability in the third quarter". Most profitable means a company with the highest profit, and that has NOTHING to do with PROFITABILITY RATIOS. NothingWorthy (talk) 21:20, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
"Profitable" is not a term hammered out in stone, unlike the term "profit". Therefore, better to use "profit" than "profitable", in my and apparently other editors of the Exxon article's opinions. Why are you so bent on not using the word profit? If nothing else it says exactly what you are trying to say and it doesn't raise issue with people that consider valid definitions of "profitable" to be percentage based, rather than just absolute sizes (such as myself). TastyCakes (talk) 21:27, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Again, what you are talking about is called PROFITABILITY RATIOS, not PROFITABILITY, I think Fortune Magazine puts it right here, http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/fortune/0707/gallery.global500_profits.fortune/index.html, and so do all the other links that I listed. BTW, you seem to be concerned too much with simplicity to the point where the word "most profitable" is confusing for readers of XOM article, why not editing on the XOM article on the Simple English version. NothingWorthy (talk) 21:34, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
You are clearly entrenched in your opinion/definition. I'll wait for input from cooler heads before having any more dealings with the matter. TastyCakes (talk) 21:39, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Fortune's editors are using "most profitable", and so do all other business links that I listed, PROFITABILITY is different from PROFITABILITY RATIOS, just google any of the two terms to know why you are getting it wrong. NothingWorthy (talk) 21:47, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
At this point NothingWorthy was blocked from editing for 24 hours for violating the three-revert rule.
Now you are wasting even more time. NothingWorthy (talk) 22:32, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
I'm sorry you misunderstand how Wikipedia works. TastyCakes (talk) 22:38, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Well, I think I know how it works, at least for most of the time. After your stunt today, I hope that you understand the difference between PROFITABILITY and PROFITABILITY RATIOS, away from your earlier "Profit and profitability are not the same thing. Exxon has largest profit, not profitability". I hope you will remember this whenever you hear or read "most profitable" in your future again. NothingWorthy (talk) 22:54, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
I will probably remember this incident when I think about how "profitable" is not a particularly well-defined term, unlike "profit". I will also think about it when musing on the fact that "profitability" is simply the noun form of the adjective "profitable", with the weakness of the latter clearly translating to the former. For your part, I hope you will think about this incident before engaging in edit wars in the future. TastyCakes (talk) 23:00, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Incidentally, here is another Fortune article which implies a definition of "most profitable" different from your own: Top industries: Most profitable. TastyCakes (talk) 23:03, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

About your earlier statement, after all this, you are still not able to know the difference between the two terms profit and profitability, you said earlier, "Profit and profitability are not the same thing. Exxon has largest profit, not profitability". As for the second, These are whole industries, not companies. Now, in your fancy world, Do you know what is the most profitable company in the world, or just you don't know what you are talking about after your demagogic stunt today???????? NothingWorthy (talk) 23:18, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Oh so now your definition of profitability depends on whether you're talking about one company or a group of companies? Fortune could have just as feasibly gone and added up absolute profits of various industries and come up with a far different list. But they didn't, because "being profitable" is a term that can refer to at least two different metrics (profitability %-wise and gross amount-wise) and both are valid. By the first definition, no, I do not know the world's most profitable company. It is probably some obscure little startup. That is why it was a mistake to list Exxon as "the most profitable": by the % metric it is obviously not. But I'm getting a little bored with your childish arguments and acerbic personality. You are clearly wrong. Enjoy your ban. TastyCakes (talk) 23:34, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Well, what about the first most profitable list which list XOM as the world's most profitable company????, does not that end your whole argument????. BTW, I called your stunt demagogic because 1) now you are searching for adjacent Fortune lists, while not accepting the first plain clear list that ends all your today's stunts. 2) You earlier said "Profit and profitability are not the same thing. Exxon has largest profit, not profitability", I guess you don't know what you were talking about then. You idiot even don not understand, after your stunts and substantial time wasting, that there are NO DIFFERENCE between profits and profitability, because profitability is turning out a profit, ex. "We will be profitable in the 3rd quarter". Most profitable means having the highest profits, not to be confused with profitability rations. NothingWorthy (talk) 23:56, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Northern Ship (talk) 05:50, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
NothingWorthy grew impatient with TastyCakes failure to put this discussion on his talk page and made a second account, Northern Ship, to circumvent his ban and paste it here. Soon after, Northern Ship was banned indefinitely for being a sock puppet and NothingWorthy's block was extended to 5 days for being a sock puppeteer.

Disputed fair use rationale for File:Garowe online logo.jpg}

Thank you for uploading File:Garowe online logo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. I just wanted to say I appreciate your excellent idea of using Google to provide an English translation and for implementing it. I didn't know how well it would work, but I'm pleasantly surprised with the results. Especially the sentence that contains the phrase "Jewish lobby", which is good since it is the most contentious piece of information being referenced. Epoch Times

Hi, if you remember seeing biases in The Epoch Times' reporting, please indicate them to me. I would be interested to see them. I'm not saying "show me the source or I don't believe you," but more like, I would be interested to understand what you mean. So if you don't have any examples on hand, which would be understandable to an extent, but you believe you have encountered bias in their reporting before, then please keep me in mind if you see any in the future. I am also an observer of these issues, and would be interested to see some specific examples or instances in this connection. Thanks. --Asdfg12345 09:55, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for your thoughts. I'd be interested to know if you stumble across anything else--I'm not against a paper having a pro human rights kind of stance, and proclaiming it openly even, (that actually sounds good to me), but it terms of presenting the facts of things, that should be fairly straightforward, and not too much impacted by other things. So I can see how on the CCP's human rights records it's clear that the paper brings one perspective (that of dissidents), but I'm not sure what impact this could have on other news, unrelated to human rights in China. In that regard I imagine it should be treated as a self-published source when the topic is the communist party's human rights issues, or Falun Gong, Tibet etc., but on other news just as a regular newspaper. Well, it's academic I guess. On another note, you may find this interesting reading.--Asdfg12345 23:05, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Calgary-Glenmore

Can we please revert back, I am trying to standardize all the riding articles for Alberta to be the same way, and those are not mistakes. It is literally described as 14 Calgary Glenmore. In different years they added numbers to the name of the districts and some years they did not.

My goal is to have each article with a section containing the boundary history, including a list of changes, so that it does not clutter the results. In each result section I want a small article listing what happened for each relevant election. a box for MLA history, an overview of the riding history byitself. --Þadius (talk) 16:14, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

The biggest reason I did that was I kinda of thought that eventually when all the map data goes in people could open the boxes and see the boundary changes from year to year. It was also easier to copy the boxes and edit them in the same section, because putting the description is enough work on its own. I also thought about that way, but I thought it looked better because all the boxes expand to fill the screen. If you want to change them I am open to suggestions if you think there is a better way. --Þadius (talk) 16:22, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I had considered moving the section down to somewhere near the bottom possibly above the references so there was "article" after the contents but I was undecided on what looks best. You know what now that I think about it lets keep them in the relevant results table. --Þadius (talk) 16:32, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
He vacated on May 15, 2009 Ron Stevens just has not been updated yet ^_^. Its actually one of the reasons I chose Glenmore to work on first because I figured more people would come looking for Calgary-Glenmore information due to the upcoming by-election. As for the boundary descriptions, as long as the article looks good and people find the information useful. I am happy--Þadius (talk) 16:36, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Twang never mentioned conflicting figures in the article. Twang doubted the accuracy of the figures given because he/she had been "told" and "heard" differently over a period of time spanning decades. Nothing else. Best Investment

I read your recent respond on the humanities reference desk (Best Investment). I'm wondering if you can tell me, based on your experience/opinion, how and where could I educate myself on proper investment? I'm still reading Intelligent investor, heard from an HSBC financial advisor, search and read some stuff on the internet (mostly wiki + google). Roughly speaking I feel that while some of the info make sense, most of them don't and seem to present conflicting data or mix with interest other than my own (eg: very intend on promoting bank's own mutual fund while provide little other alternative investment info+option) I don't want to ask this on the reference desk because I don't want to hijack (I think I already did :P) the question.

Sorry for the long read, and thank you in advance. Royor (talk) 07:20, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi Tasty, I feel quite bad about what I said about your map. I think I must have been in a bad mood about JimWae. Even thinking about that 'editor' I can already feel myself getting heated. Some times you just wish people would improve the article than come in during the middle and only talk about changing the date back. I realize you actually spent quite a bit of time on those maps for each of the Metro Vancouver districts. I can see where you're coming from and even viewing them large they're much better than they appear. I think with how small in scale they are, especially if users have set their image resolution to the default Wiki settings which is only 180px for thumbs, the map became crushed and hard to see. At this point I think Emarsee has found a fairly good neutral colour and then the contrast to make the map viewable in that small format. We are open to further suggestions to colours, but it's hard to imagine a more clear map then white, black and red, however, if you're able to find one then all the better. By the way, I really appreciate your feedback and willingness to talk about it in a polite, collaborative, and reasonable way. I started trying to initiate this FA project and at the beginning it seemed like I wasn't getting any offers, but now it seems like its taken off and I can take a step back a bit. You don't get to be an obsessed, wikistalking, right-wing ideologue and claim moral superiority too. You gleefully whitewash the biography of anyone who smells of reactionary politics, while squeezing in every bit of mean, muckraking demagoguery for which you can find the slightest reference for anyone whose politics you don't like. You typify Wikipedian politics and behaviour, which is why Wikipedia looks the way it does, but you do NOT get to also ride around on a high horse and claim the moral high ground. US Article Reply

I'm not exactly that new to Wikipedia, but that was my first attempt at a requested move. I've had far worse discussions that I deem unfair, that have resulted in me being banned. Personally I've already developed my opinion on Wikipedia through these past experience. To tell you the truth, when I started this requested move, I already thought that it wasn't going to pull through. What surprised me was how long this discussion lasted though. A near 6 days! Anyway, thanks for the apology (even though it wasn't needed really) and I'm sorry too for calling you unpatriotic (if you find that insulting. Personally, I think that it's Golbez that needs to apologize).

P.S. I have a question regarding the discussion: How was the consensus decided?--Valkyrie Red 16:27, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Guess we're all entitled to our own opinions, so I'll leave the Golbez thing at that. Anyway, regarding the whole consensus thing, I don't get how he decided that their was no consensus for move.--Valkyrie Red 20:51, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Well, I wouldn't say that it had a Snowball's Chance in Hell. It did have a good chance. It's just that there were too many people who had participated in the past debates that they were just pissed off with this being brought up again. Out of those 16 votes, about half of them were from pissed off users. What I really hoped to do was win the debate through SnottyWong's argument of WP:COMMONNAME, but looks like in the end, I lost (as with every debate I've tried to win). The only good thing that came out of this one was that I wasn't banned for sometime.--Valkyrie Red 23:29, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Well TastyCakes, I would like to thank you for your advice and conversations. They have been quite helpful and I no for sure that I will be looking at Wikipedia in a new light. Cheers!

P.S. I dropped this by Jimbo the other day to ask of his opinion, and he said that at first glance, United States of America should've been the title, but after thoroughly researching the topic, he was divided (at least that's what I interpret it to be).Valkyrie Red 04:13, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Climate Group

hi Tasty Cakes:

Apologies for this obviously amateurish attempt to reach you, you commented on the conversation about Singapore (which I appreciated), and since you seem to know your way around Wikipedia, wanted to ask for your advice on something else: I found an article, a profile of an organization called The Climate Group, which I am about 99% certain was written by the organization's PR people - is there not a rule about not writing about / promoting yourselves on Wikipedia, and how does one go about flagging an article to tackle this? Aside from the article being obviously self-promoting, it is also totally one-sided - it's essentially the organization's press kit posted to Wikipedia! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nealmcgrath (talkcontribs) 15:19, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Republic of Ireland

Hi there TastyCakes, or is 'Republic of TastyCakes' the correct form? :) Anyway, nice to make your acquaintance. Perhaps now is not the time to quit, we have two very strong points in our favour. Firstly, there is clearly room for ambiguity, and secondly MoS supports use of 'Republic of Ireland'. There's obviously no talking to these zealots, but perhaps there is some process of arbitration we can go to, which would be external and binding? The Spoorne (talk) 20:40, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Poorest postal code

That's very common, so very citable; but if you look at postal code maps there are a number of postal codes within the officially-defined area; a better wording might be "includes Canada's poorest postal code"; the citation for that might best be StatsCan I'd think, for that particular postal code, plus citations describing the whole area as the poorest postal code; though what is mean is the 000-300 block East Hastings only, I'm pretty sure; Chinatown and Gastown are included in the city's definition, but do not themselves consider themselves to be part of the Downtown Eastside, given that term's association with "the strip" (Hastings). Just some thoughts....Skookum1 (talk) 01:33, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

AfD nomination of List of Steam titles

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is List of Steam titles. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Steam titles (2nd nomination). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:17, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Direct quotations

All direct quotations require citation immediately following the closing quote. Optionally, you can rewrite the text not to use quotation marks. It is better in any case to quote complete sentences. Yworo (talk) 21:36, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia:CITE#When_quoting_someone Yworo (talk) 21:40, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
It clearly shows that a citation is required even for a single quoted word. That's why quoting whole sentences is better. Use named refs, that way they won't repeat in the ref section. It is necessary to know which of the two articles quoted each quote comes from. Yworo (talk) 21:48, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Salutations

Dear user, I would like to inform you that although I am not User:PhilthyBear I am aware of his edits, disruptions, and I do share the same floor of residence with him. In fact it was his recent regrettable outburst that convinced me to set up a user account instead of using the IP address which I sometimes share with others including him.

That aside, I do have an issue in which you may be interested in participating in. The issue is with the Montreal article. A user has made numerous recent edits of the infobox indicating the name, official name, other names, website, etc. The editor believes that the names should reflect the french spelling. I believe although the french spelling should be mentioned, the english spelling should be used as this is an english article. The "official" name in french is "Ville de Montréal" which as you know simply means "City of Montreal". So the official name in english is City and the official name in french is Ville. I am a little torn on the issue and believe the users motives might be more about the french agenda, and I do not want to commence an edit war. Perhaps you could add your opinion (whatever it may be), or keep an eye on the article/discussion. Po' buster (talk) 18:27, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Emotions

Please stop writing me, I have zero interests in your emotions and feelings. I think perhaps you take things personally on wikipedia and no offense, but perhaps someone of such fragile emotions should not get involved in discussion boards. And now accusations of sock puppetry ? I mean c'mon. Once again please do not write me again regarding your personal feelings. PhilthyBear (talk) 13:54, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Wow, you are truly a problem editor and you will be reported. If you check the discussion board history for Wikipedia talk:Canadian Wikipedians' notice board you will see it is you that is being aggressive and a bully to me. And now openly accusing me of something so ridiculous just because you are overwhelmingly the minority in your views on a discussion board ? Other editors share my opinion as well, or perhaps I am also User:Mindmatrix and User:M.nelson. You sir are ridiculous and I am accusing you of being User:Resolute as you two share the same views. Once again please do not write me because I have zero interest in talking to someone of such poor character. PhilthyBear (talk) 14:13, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
I left you a message because that's the standard procedure for accusing someone of sockpuppetry. I did not expect you to respond in any way but deleting the message, which you of course have. If you're not a sockpuppeteer, you have nothing to worry about. Please try not to be emotional about this, it is quite hypocritical. Take care, TastyCakes (talk) 15:19, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
Oh, and if you wish to accuse Resolute of being a sock puppet of me, by all means go ahead, you can do so here. A checkuser will show that to be false. And if you wish to report me for incivility, you can do so here. Bye for now, TastyCakes (talk) 15:22, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi TastyCakes. I followed your instructions and I am on the first part, where you have to make a name for your image but I don't know how to go to the next step. I make my name and I still can't click on the "OK-Next" button. Also, I'm not sure if I made it into a png file. All I've done is follow your instructions but nothing else so I don't know if I have to do something else after that to make it a png file. Nations United (talk) 04:47, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

Um.. that wasn't really the problem I was having. I am only on the first step. It the step where it says "Original work" and then I have to type the name of my image. It says "File:" and then I have to make a name. Then under it it says "Add more original files" and under that it says "OK-Next" and no matter what I do, it wont let me click it and go to the next step. Nations United (talk) 05:39, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

Ottawa municipal election, 2010

Hey TastyCakes, do you have a ref for current mayor Larry O'Brien running in the Ottawa municipal election, 2010? I think that the information was erroneously added to O'Brien's page and slipped under everyone's radar. The idea of an April 1, 2009 announcement is contradicted by a large number of news stories, for example this March 17, 2010 CBC article. If it's okay with you, I suggest that we remove the information from both pages, perhaps adding a blurb on O'Brien's page stating that he hasn't made a decision either way. Cheers, -M.Nelson (talk) 15:07, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Fair enough; I'll put a few refs together and clean up those pages (unless you beat me to it!). Cheers, -M.Nelson (talk)
A quick journey through time (well, history, to be specific) shows that the April 2009 bit seems to have been a good-faith contribution by a still-active user. Either way, I think the March 2010 CBC article supersedes a mysterious local newspaper article... -M.Nelson (talk) 16:37, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Oil spill talk

you've been around wp more than long enough to know better. talk pages are for discussing all aspects of the article. they are not a forum for the general discussion of the article's subject. this is an excellent case in point.call it draconian if you will, it doesn't change the fact that this one is already absurdly long, and an unfortunate proportion of the comments don't relate to the article. there are undoubtedly many message boards you can go to and engage in far-ranging discussions of this disaster. you want to call in an administrator, go ahead. i like my chances. Toyokuni3 (talk) 19:25, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

sorry, i shouldn't have been that confrontational. your point about the newbie is well taken. but on articles about controversial subjects, i feel this rule needs to be enforced to keep the talk pages from getting completely out of hand. this one is well on its way in that direction.Toyokuni3 (talk) 19:46, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Deepwater Horizon Ownership

This June 3 article on insurance says

  • BP (operator and 65 percent working interest in the project).
  • Anadarko (25 percent working interest).
  • Mitsui (10 percent working interest).

That's pretty bad if we've been messing this up. Could you point me to the logic of not including the partners? (I believe that what you say is plausible...this will impact some feeder articles I wanted to update). Thanks.Americasroof (talk) 18:55, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments on my talk page. In looking at the above statement BP as (sole) operator is a correct statement. However the companies with ownership interest are BP, Anadarko and Mitsui.Americasroof (talk) 23:21, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

ISS Operations and Management map

Dear TastyCakes,

Great work on your version of the NASA map for the operations and management stations for the ISS. It's just, your last revision says you were standardizing the spelling. I think it's worth noting that proper names not only do not need to be standardized, but they must not be standardized at all. It's like an American newspaper saying that the US Defense Secretary met with a representative from the Labor party in the UK. Or an Australian newspaper saying that the One World Trade Centre will house the Canadian Humour Association (which I just made up :D ). Neither there is such thing as a "Labor" party in the UK, nor is the soon-to-be tallest building in New York called "One World Trade Centre." The Defense Secretary met with a Labour rep and Canadian Humour will be located in the WT Center. Same here. There is no such thing as an Ames Telescience Support "Centre" anywhere in the United States, just as well as there isn't an ESA European Space Research and Technology "Center". That's why the original map that NASA released, from which you got the information for your own map, spells "ESA European Space Research and Technology Centre" and "European Astronaut Centre" but it also spells "Ames Telescience Support Center" and "Glenn Telescience Support Center" and "Payload Operations Center." Of course, there are other stations with the word "center" that are direct translations from another language; those, of course, need not be either "centre" or "center," but the ones that do have the English word need to be spelled the way their name is officially spelled, regardless of what the chosen style for the rest of the article is. Like I said, I'm sure Brits don't take it very kindly when an American newspaper says that they have a "Labor party" in their country. Likewise, some people might not like the fact that the name of the place they work for has been altered in an encyclopedia. I'm not suggesting that you should make a new version of the map with the correct spelling, but I do ask that you take it into consideration if you're going to revise it any further in the future; if you're ever going to edit the map, you might as well make a couple more corrections. If that's not the case, I really think this is such a minor thing that you don't need to go out of your way to amend it.

My very best regards from Houston, TX, i.e., "Space City" :) --AndresTM (talk) 23:37, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

File:Firman Sulem and Alex Schmitt.JPG needs authorship information

Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:Firman Sulem and Alex Schmitt.JPG appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

  • If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which: {{subst:usernameexpand|TastyCakes/Archive1}} will produce an appropriate expansion,

File:ISS_Centers.svg

Hey. I think you need to fix the location of "Shuttle Launch Control" on your ISS control center infographic. It shows it in Miami instead of Cape Canaveral. I'm also wondering if maybe control centers relating to Dragon and Cygnus should be included. Thanks. --Kitch (Talk : Contrib) 10:53, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with File:Blue Mountain Menagerie.JPG

Thank you for uploading File:Blue Mountain Menagerie.JPG.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the image description page states the source and copyright status of the derivative work, it only names the creator of the original work without specifying the status of their copyright over the work.

Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the original image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. Thanks again for your cooperation. Kelly hi! 14:07, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Spontaneous potential logging

The article Spontaneous potential logging has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced original research piece

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. —♦♦ AMBER(ЯʘCK) 20:40, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
