Software changes this week

• The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf8) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since November 12. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 18, and on all Wikipedias from November 19 (calendar).
• The new search tool ("CirrusSearch") will be on the English Wikipedia from November 19. [1]

Move from Bugzilla to Phabricator

• The tool to track bugs will change on November 21.
• You won't be able to add or edit bugs between November 21 and November 24.
• You can make the change easier for you by creating your account.
• Bugzilla will be frozen after the change. You will see, edit and report bugs in Phabricator.

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Stuartyeates. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I am wanting to ensure there is sufficiently robust referencing to establish its notability and credibility. • The move from Bugzilla to Phabricator is done. You can now report bugs in Phabricator. [3]

Problems

• There was a problem when editing tables in VisualEditor. VisualEditor was trying to fix bad values for the colspan or rowspan option. VisualEditor now leaves the bad values to avoid making things worse. This was fixed on November 17. [4]

Software changes this week

• The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf9) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since November 19. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 25, and on all Wikipedias from November 26 (calendar).
• You will be able to try VisualEditor on many new wikis for the first time. After November 26, VisualEditor will become available on Wikidata, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikiversity, Wikivoyage, and Wikinews wikis. You can find it in your Beta options. [5]
• VisualEditor now tells you if your edit needs to be approved. [6]
• You can now use VisualEditor's tools directly when you resume editing after closing the save window. [7]

I've moved it to Draft:Association for the Promotion of Electric Vehicles and removed the PROD. Draft is prefered in this kind of situation because it encourages third-party participation and gives a fixed lifespan (drafts are deleted after six months, but can be requested to be undeleted). a bit mystified

I'm a little bit mystified as to why you've launched a series of AfD's about articles I've created. A clear consensus has formed around the first one, but usual practice is to wait for the close before using that as precedent. Also some of the articles share nothing in common with that article but my editorship and the fact the subject is a female New Zealander. Stuartyeates (talk) 08:56, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

It has nothing to do with you personally, I was surprised at first that you were the primary author of each. I was seeking a notable female New Zealand teacher to teach my students about, and came across this series of stub articles, none of which specify why the person is notable. Also, I do not know which you are counting as the first one, but there is no consensus on any of the five of them. Recent software changes

• All users are now getting pages from servers that run the HHVM tool. HHVM should make pages load faster. [10]
• You can join a video chat about Phabricator on December 11 at 18:00 (UTC). Phabricator is the new tool to report issues. [11]

Problems

• There was a problem with Phabricator on November 29. It was due to a network issue. [12]

Software changes this week

• The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf11) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since December 3. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from December 9. It will be on all Wikipedias from December 10 (calendar). [13]
• You can now exit VisualEditor by pressing the "Esc" key. [14]
• It is now easier to use VisualEditor with IMEs. Typing in Malayalam now works better. [15] [16]
• The new version of OOjs UI fixed many issues with the size and layout of buttons in dialogs. [17] [18] [19]
• (Lua) You can no longer use mw.text.unstrip to get the HTML from special page transclusion. You can see a list of scripts to fix. [20] [21]

Future changes

• Starting next week JavaScript tools won't work if they use jQuery Migrate. [22]

  • Titan was selected as the graph DB to implement a Wikidata query service running in production
  • Fixed adding links to ru.wikinews.org which was broken by its change to HTTPS-only
  • Worked on redesigning the header area (label, description, alias, in-other-languages box)
  • Polished d:Wikidata:Data access and d:Wikidata:Database download. Could still use some more work though if you have time.
  • Enabled PHP_CodeSniffer with Mediawiki rules and some additional ones to make us aware of more code issues
  • We no longer log some common 404 errors in the exception log

Recent software changes

• Rotated PDF files in landscape format used to show too small. They will now display correctly. You may need to purge older files. [37]
• You can now use the {{!}} magic word instead of Template:!. Many wikis used the template to create a pipe (|) in tables and templates. You can delete the template. [38]

Software changes this week

• The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf14) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since January 7. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from January 13. It will be on all Wikipedias from January 14 (calendar).
• A bug in VisualEditor sometimes added a ☀ (Sun) character. This is now fixed. [39]
• The search and replace tool in VisualEditor is now much faster in long pages. [40]
• The TemplateData editor now uses the same design as VisualEditor. [41] [42] [43]
• The thumb option is now shown in your language in the help of the classic editor toolbar. [44]

Future changes

• You can sign up to answer questions from designers. It will help them make editing easier. [45]

Hi Stuartyeates, Many many thanks for you quick response to our article. I was expecting a months wait for the dreaded result. As you can see I do need help with my article. I think I've got an idea how to citate, but I'm not sure, so help would be nice ...please.

I'm a bit cack handed when it comes to computers. I see I haven't given any citations, therefore I understand what I've done or not. The event does attract people from as far as the midlands, Cornwall and London. It has generated interest in the slot car forums both positive and negative and also has interest from abroad with the use of twitter. Local papers also turn up with reporters and camera men. I have a few paper cuttings from past events but no recordings from the local radio station. The tournament attracts 100+ competitors and has raised over for £4500 to the Greyhound Sanctuary. Needless to say it is has many Greyhound rescue followers. I do believe the event is relatively notable, but that is up to you. Before we get down and correct my errors, do you think my article after all my effort would be accepted if I get all the right boxes ticked? Please could you help a Neanderthal heathen sort out his large calculator and the internet hieroglyphics? If I can source the relevant information would you be able to guide me as to what to do next. I know you are a volunteer and this is taking up your valuable time, I thank you for that. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of this …eventually.

The promptness of the response was due to the fact that I pick random drafts from the queue rather than the oldest. Realistically speaking, the event needs in-depth coverage in the mainstream media before it become notable in wikipedia terms. If you want a second opinion, feel free to resubmit to AfC. Recent changes

• You can download the new version of the Wikipedia app for Android. The new version shows lead images, better galleries and content from Wikidata. It also has many other new features.[46] [47]
• Programs and bots still can't read information about images on many wikis. You can see the list of wikis with the most files to fix. Wikipedia in Italian, Indonesian and Japanese language have the most files to fix. On the biggest wikis you should use bots. Bots can add information templates to groups of files. You can ask other tech users to help you.

Problems

• All JavaScript on Commons was broken for a few minutes on Tuesday. It was because of old code in the HotCat tool. The same problem happened on some Wikipedias on Wednesday. It is now fixed. [48]

Vic Dibitetto

Vic has over 26 million views on his YouTube channel with 50,000 subscribers. He will be appearing in the mainstream film, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 along with his own show on Hulu called, "You Don't Know Jack." Not to mention if you actually keep up with Vic's career, he has been selling out shows to all venues that he has performed at. I don't understand how you see Vic as "Not notable comedian." If the article about Vic is deleted, sometime in 2015, someone else is going to have to re-create it because Vic will have more notability by then.

Also, if you want to refer to poorly sourced, why is Lauren Francesca's article still active when the sources only include her web site and IMdb? Surely that is just as bad as the sources in Vic Dibitetto's article. How would I move it to a draft? Also, any chance you could explain the difference between Lauren Francesca and Vic Dibitetto? If Vic's article had more IMDb sources, would he still stay up as well? See HELP:MOVE and select 'Draft' from the namespace to move to a draft. The difference between Lauren Francesca and Vic Dibitetto is that I came across Vic Dibitetto and not Lauren Francesca. I'm in no way defending Lauren Francesca, but I can't nominate all the poor articles for deletion all at once. Stuartyeates (talk) 18:16, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

How did you first find Vic Dibitetto's article? Also, what kind of sources would you need to keep Vic's page active?

It wasn't a vote, but you're right User:Vicfan23; the consensus of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Vic Dibitetto was keep. I don't feel about it, because I'm not emotionally engaged with the article. Stuartyeates (talk) 08:03, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

It just seemed harsh that you would come out of nowhere and call Dibitetto, "Not notable" and try to remove his article for no reason. The man is seen on screen at movie theaters across the world next to Kevin James, and that's just a movie trailer. He's selling out venues everywhere. In fact, there was one theater that he performed at last week, and his show sold faster than Gilbert Gottfried or Kevin Nealon. Now, this year in May, he is doing a show at NYCB Theatre at Westbury, which holds 3,000 seats. If Vic was "not notable" as you claimed, he wouldn't perform at such a LARGE venue. Did you even do your research on Vic before automatically claiming him as "Not notable" and request him to be removed?

Software changes this week

• The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since January 14. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from February 3. It will be on all Wikipedias from February 4 (calendar).
• The "Save page" button in the VisualEditor toolbar is now blue rather than green. This is the same as on the mobile site. [55]
• You can now edit pages on the draft namespace with VisualEditor on the Russian Wikipedia and Hebrew Wikipedia. You can ask to get VisualEditor for a namespace on your wiki. When your community agrees, ask in Phabricator. [56] [57]

Recent software changes

• You can now use {{#lsth: PageName | SectionName }} to transclude a section with its title. [58]

Problems

• MediaWiki was reverted to the previous version on February 4. It was because of a performance issue. It was restored later. [59]
• UploadWizard was broken on February 4 because of the revert of MediaWiki. [60]
• All sites were broken for 30 minutes on February 5. It was due to a network problem. [61]

Software changes this week

• The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since February 5. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from February 10. It will be on all Wikipedias from February 11 (calendar).
• You can have one user page for all wikis. Your Meta user page will show if you don't have a user page on a wiki. You can test this tool on test wikis. [62] [63] [64]
• You can search for media files in VisualEditor more easily. Images are bigger and you see the size and license. [65] [66]
• It is easier to review your changes when you save the page in VisualEditor. The window is wider. [67]
• You can read the latest news about VisualEditor. You can now join weekly meetings with developers. During the meetings you can tell developers which bugs are the most important. The first meeting is on February 11 at 20:00 (UTC).

Future changes

• Administrators will soon be able to delete change tags used fewer than 5,000 times. [68]
• In the future you will be able to have personal lists of articles on the mobile site. [69]

Software changes this week

• The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since February 11. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from February 17. It will be on all Wikipedias from February 18 (calendar).
• On Wednesday your Meta user page will be shown if you don't have a user page on a wiki. [70] [71] [72]
• You can now change the order of categories in VisualEditor using drag-and-drop. [73]
• In VisualEditor, you now need to make a change before you can "Apply Changes" to citations and templates. [74]
• The way the cursor moves in VisualEditor is changing. Your browser now handles the cursor directly. Most of you will see no change. In right-to-left text, the cursor now moves in a 'visible' rather than 'logical' way. This is like other sites but you may be surprised at first.​ [75]

Meetings

• The VisualEditor Team had their first public bug triage meeting on February 11. They will post the results on the meeting page. [76]

• It is now easier to see template fields in VisualEditor. The fields are bigger. [83]
• It is now easier to see when a button is disabled in VisualEditor. [84]
• Sometimes when you copy-pasted a template in VisualEditor, it was replaced by HTML. This problem is now fixed. [85]
• Tools in Labs will stop working for a few hours on February 24. [86]

A serious question

Regardless of our recent disputes, do you even know who Vic Dibitetto is? I find it very strange that you now have interest in monitoring his article when you're in New Zealand, and he is in a completely different country. Plus, you wanted to take him down at first sight, but that's a different story.

I also looked over your User contributions, and I found it very odd how Vic would even appear within your searches.

What is your current interest in Vic all of the sudden? Before you claimed that you weren't "emotionally engaged" with it, but now it seems like you truly are. Also, please answer these questions within your own words instead of copying and pasting Wikipedia's pre-typed words like before. Thank you!
