Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Stuartyeates. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

The subject article was PRODed by yourself - it has been restored as a contested PROD. You may wish to consider WP:AfD in the light of this result. Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for notifying me. Acting in good faith, I'll give the contester some time to improve the article rather than immediately putting it up for deletion. Stuartyeates (talk) 23:35, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for November 19

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Grahame Thorne, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Transvaal. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

User:NealeFamily/Biomatters

Hi Stuart - I rescued an article on Biomatters from deletion with assistance from User:FreeRangeFrog, but would like you to take a look before I resubmit it for AfC. I am wanting to ensure there is sufficiently robust referencing to establish its notability and credibility. The debate for AfD is at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Biomatters, with the primary concern being around the references. NealeFamily (talk) 01:19, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

I've taken the lede out and shot it. Lots and lots and lots of the articles are non-independent, they're fine, of course for content but not for notability. I suggest that you make a list of the ones you think are independent for notability. Stuartyeates (talk) 01:54, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
I see two solid sources http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10754509 and http://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleNo/40916/title/Opinion--Bioinformatics-Software--A-Buyer-s-Guide/ These are really good. Are they enough? I'm really not sure. Stuartyeates (talk) 02:06, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

Aaron Carotta

Hello Stuart,

I think you should have a relook at the sources over at Aaron Carotta. I have fixed these and have added citations. I am pretty sure this article is notable enough. These are not puff pieces at all as you would say. Please look at every single link. I also think the page needs a tidy up.

Evolocity

Hi Stuart - not enough coverage to make it notable. Can you userfy it to my space with a title change to Association for the Promotion of Electric Vehicles. I'll take a change of tack on the article as the Association is more notable and global. Thanks

I've moved it to Draft:Association for the Promotion of Electric Vehicles and removed the PROD. Draft is prefered in this kind of situation because it encourages third-party participation and gives a fixed lifespan (drafts are deleted after six months, but can be requested to be undeleted). Good luck. Stuartyeates (talk) 23:53, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

Your draft article, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Women's Refuge (New Zealand)

Hello Stuartyeates. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "Women's Refuge (New Zealand)".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, copy this code: {{subst:Refund/G13|Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Women's Refuge (New Zealand)}}, paste it in the edit box at this link, click "Save page", and an administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. HasteurBot (talk) 14:01, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Catherine Hill

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Catherine Hill requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content or organised event, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Hirolovesswords (talk) 05:00, 5 December 2014 (UTC)

While I support the deletion of this particular article, I find it rather distasteful of Hirolovesswords (talk · contribs) to not have deleted the quote box from the automatically generated message above. It is utterly inappropriate to display such a message to a user who would have created 1000s of articles. Hence, I punish Hirolovesswords with a trout. Schwede66 07:23, 5 December 2014 (UTC)

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

a bit mystified

I'm a little bit mystified as to why you've launched a series of AfD's about articles I've created. A clear consensus has formed around the first one, but usual practice is to wait for the close before using that as precedent. Also some of the articles share nothing in common with that article but my editorship and the fact the subject is a female New Zealander. Stuartyeates (talk) 08:56, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

It has nothing to do with you personally, I was surprised at first that you were the primary author of each. I was seeking a notable female New Zealand teacher to teach my students about, and came across this series of stub articles, none of which specify why the person is notable. Also, I do not know which you are counting as the first one, but there is no consensus on any of the five of them. Please be assured I am not going after you personally, and should you add something to them that actually shows notability, I will be happy to withdraw that afd nomination.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 09:13, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

You might have better luck communicating with contributors if you refrain from using New Zealand slang ("flash") that nobody outside of your pint-sized country uses.

Navitaire AfD

Hi Stuartyeates, just a quick note here about the Navitaire AfD discussion, which doesn't seem to have attracted any comments. Since it has now been relisted a couple of times and there's still no real discussion, I was wondering if you'd like to take a look at the draft that I've proposed to beef up the page? That way, perhaps the draft will resolve your concerns about the page that led to you nominating it for deletion. What do you think? 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 20:07, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi User:OR drohowa, I've been working with the Dowse team, the main coordination page is Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_Zealand/Requested_articles/Craft; User:Auchmill, User:Peata likes art and User:Gracemckenzie are doing the actual work. I'm not really available right now due to IRL things. Stuartyeates (talk) 18:49, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
Hi User:Stuartyeates. Great to hear that you are already involved! Just a suggestion then - it might be good to have the Dowse Art Museum's name on the page Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_Zealand/Requested_articles/Craft if it is indeed the page for your main activities, and it wouldn't hurt having a list of participants' names right on that page as well. Anyhow, good luck with your Wikiprojects! Cheers, OR drohowa (talk) 19:23, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Andrew McRae Davidson

The article Andrew McRae Davidson has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Does not appear to satisfy WP:BIO.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 01:39, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello, this is a courtesy note to say that I have removed the PROD tag from the above article. I added a reference regarding the results of the grand final. I've noticed that the articles for some of the other seasons are in a similar condition, so I will have a look at fixing some of them. Regards, AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 01:00, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Request on 21:01:09, 18 January 2015 for assistance on AfC submission by Darmech

Hi Stuartyeates, Many many thanks for you quick response to our article. I was expecting a months wait for the dreaded result. As you can see I do need help with my article. I think I've got an idea how to citate, but I'm not sure, so help would be nice ...please.

I'm a bit cack handed when it comes to computers. I see I haven't given any citations, therefore I understand what I've done or not. The event does attract people from as far as the midlands, Cornwall and London. It has generated interest in the slot car forums both positive and negative and also has interest from abroad with the use of twitter. Local papers also turn up with reporters and camera men. I have a few paper cuttings from past events but no recordings from the local radio station. The tournament attracts 100+ competitors and has raised over for £4500 to the Greyhound Sanctuary. Needless to say it is has many Greyhound rescue followers. I do believe the event is relatively notable, but that is up to you. Before we get down and correct my errors, do you think my article after all my effort would be accepted if I get all the right boxes ticked? Please could you help a Neanderthal heathen sort out his large calculator and the internet hieroglyphics? If I can source the relevant information would you be able to guide me as to what to do next. I know you are a volunteer and this is taking up your valuable time, I thank you for that. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of this …eventually.

Your help would be much appreciated

Kind regards Darmech

Darmech (talk) 21:01, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

The promptness of the response was due to the fact that I pick random drafts from the queue rather than the oldest. Realistically speaking, the event needs in-depth coverage in the mainstream media before it become notable in wikipedia terms. If you want a second opinion, feel free to resubmit to AfC. Vic Dibitetto

Vic has over 26 million views on his YouTube channel with 50,000 subscribers. He will be appearing in the mainstream film, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 along with his own show on Hulu called, "You Don't Know Jack." Not to mention if you actually keep up with Vic's career, he has been selling out shows to all venues that he has performed at. I don't understand how you see Vic as "Not notable comedian." If the article about Vic is deleted, sometime in 2015, someone else is going to have to re-create it because Vic will have more notability by then.

Also, if you want to refer to poorly sourced, why is Lauren Francesca's article still active when the sources only include her web site and IMdb? Surely that is just as bad as the sources in Vic Dibitetto's article. Why is it that Vic is scheduled for deletion, but Lauren's article will stay? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vicfan23 (talkcontribs) 21:48, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

if you believe there are other articles that you believe aren't making the cut you're welcome to nominate them. If you believe that vic will become notable you're welcome to have it moved to a draft instead of being deleted. Stuartyeates (talk) 23:55, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

How would I move it to a draft? Also, any chance you could explain the difference between Lauren Francesca and Vic Dibitetto? If Vic's article had more IMDb sources, would he still stay up as well? Lauren's sources are referring to her web site's bio and IMDb. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vicfan23 (talkcontribs) 18:12, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

See HELP:MOVE and select 'Draft' from the namespace to move to a draft. The difference between Lauren Francesca and Vic Dibitetto is that I came across Vic Dibitetto and not Lauren Francesca. I'm in no way defending Lauren Francesca, but I can't nominate all the poor articles for deletion all at once. Stuartyeates (talk) 18:16, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

How did you first find Vic Dibitetto's article? Also, what kind of sources would you need to keep Vic's page active?

I do new page patrol of pages ~ 15 days old via Special:NewPages. I'm looking for in depth coverage in sources that are independent of the subject. Stuartyeates (talk) 05:49, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Well, they voted and Vic's article will NOT be removed. They're keeping it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Vic_Dibitetto How do you feel about that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vicfan23 (talkcontribs) 05:17, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

It wasn't a vote, but you're right User:Vicfan23; the consensus of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Vic Dibitetto was keep. I don't feel about it, because I'm not emotionally engaged with the article. Stuartyeates (talk) 08:03, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

It just seemed harsh that you would come out of nowhere and call Dibitetto, "Not notable" and try to remove his article for no reason. The man is seen on screen at movie theaters across the world next to Kevin James, and that's just a movie trailer. He's selling out venues everywhere. In fact, there was one theater that he performed at last week, and his show sold faster than Gilbert Gottfried or Kevin Nealon. Now, this year in May, he is doing a show at NYCB Theatre at Westbury, which holds 3,000 seats. If Vic was "not notable" as you claimed, he wouldn't perform at such a LARGE venue. Did you even do your research on Vic before automatically claiming him as "Not notable" and request him to be removed?

A serious question

Regardless of our recent disputes, do you even know who Vic Dibitetto is? I find it very strange that you now have interest in monitoring his article when you're in New Zealand, and he is in a completely different country. Plus, you wanted to take him down at first sight, but that's a different story.

I also looked over your User contributions, and I found it very odd how Vic would even appear within your searches.

What is your current interest in Vic all of the sudden? Before you claimed that you weren't "emotionally engaged" with it, but now it seems like you truly are. Also, please answer these questions within your own words instead of copying and pasting Wikipedia's pre-typed words like before. Thank you!

Excuse my page stalking, but I sense an editor who is rather emotionally engaged. I suggest that before you do anything else, ‎Vicfan23, you should read the behavioural guideline assume good faith. Schwede66 04:15, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
You're excused, User:Schwede66. User:Vicfan23, as I explained further up this talk page, I came across the article using Special:NewPages, which I patrol sometimes. Those initial edits made it one of ~16k articles on my WP:Watchlist, so I notice changes to the article if I'm paying attention (I have a real-world life, so sometimes I don't).
