hello

I'm trying. Thanks for introducing me to Wikipedia.64.201.207.241 (talk) 01:51, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

hello again

Just wanted to see if I could do this on my own. I like your Mistatim article. Erzi (talk) 02:52, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Portal:Arctic

I see you have started constructing Portal:Arctic! Thanks for that. I left a note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Arctic. There is also a handy list of the best articles I've found so far, at Wikipedia:WikiProject Arctic. Carcharoth (talk) 12:16, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

PS. Whaling Disaster of 1871 is a good DYK. Carcharoth (talk) 12:24, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
I was coming to tell you about Azolla event, then I saw that you were already aware of it. It is a good article. Could be one of the selected articles, not just a DYK. Carcharoth (talk) 05:43, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
PS. Isn't Jake Gyllenhaal stretching the definition of "Arctic bio" a bit? :-) Arctic climate campaingers, native Arctic peoples, and Arctic explorers, sure, but those notable for that, not, um, film stars campaigning on environmental issues. The trouble is, there aren't that many good bios yet. I did find a few B-class explorer articles, though. Can't we use those? See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Arctic#B-class_articles_2. Carcharoth (talk) 05:45, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Portal talk:Arctic

Please see some pointers here if you are trying to get this portal to WP:FPORT at some point. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 03:20, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Those were just some suggestions, feel free to do what you like with them. If you want of course take a look at some other WP:FPORTs for some other ideas, and if you have any questions about how to model something after a portal I worked on in the past let me know. It seems like you are really doing some active work on that new portal so I'll let you run with it for a while. As for WP:ARCTIC I was basically just trying to help them out with some initial set-up work so further thoughts about content-specific stuff is probably better off posed to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Arctic. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 04:01, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Like I said, would love to compare notes later on but at this point I'm content if you want to just run with Portal:Arctic and see where it takes you. Good luck and let me know if I can help with anything specifically. Pretty much all my thoughts on portals can be seen by looking at those I have worked on previously. Cirt (talk) 04:10, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Arctic Climate

Hi, I saw you rated Climate_of_the_Arctic. I was just wondering if you had any suggestions for improving the article. It's nice to get some feedback on it. StephenHudson (talk) 16:21, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Changes to DYK archives

Good work on the portal. Fixed a few typos. Love the quotes! Did you ever get a reply to this? Carcharoth (talk) 01:35, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Qu'Appelle/Indian Head

Your photos of Qu'Appelle and Indian Head are wonderful. Congratulations. But I am quite sure that several of the photos of Qu'Appelle that you have put on Wikipedia Commons are actually of Indian Head. Could you please check? Thank you and best regards. Masalai (talk) 06:04, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Several photos putatively of Qu’Appelle Museum are actually Indian Head; also the two images StreetscapeQuAppelle2.JPG and QuAppelleStreetscape.JPG. I've only just discovered the photos that you placed on Wikipedia Commons and will try to add them to the articles on Qu'Appelle, Ft Qu'Appelle, Indian Head and the Qu'Appelle Valley. You've done a great job. I was in Canada myself in July and grabbed as many as I could but there is only so much time one can spend photographing things that other people find boringly familiar! Isn't Qu'Appelle sad.... Masalai (talk) 20:48, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Yes, that's right. You do have a photo of the former Royal Bank (previously the Northern Bank) on Main Street, Qu'Appelle, and the community hall is the former Red&White grocery store. The Queen's Hotel was next door: amazing that the fire didn't take the old grocery store as well. I wish I'd taken a shot of Main Street from the Post Office end. Hamblin's General Store was immediately to the north of the bank. Strange to see the street almost devoid of buildings now.Masalai (talk) 23:25, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi again. I am quite certain that I have seen photos you provided of Highway 35 between Qu'Appelle and Fort Qu'Appelle. It was once a very busy highway but is now of course largely disused. (One wonders, indeed, how much longer the cost of keeping it paved can be maintained: several unpaved municipal roads, indeed, have already been closed entirely as farmsteads which formerly lay along them have been abandoned.) I would like to add one or more of these photos to the Qu'Appelle article but I cannot find where they are stored on Wikipedia Commons. Please advise. Kind regards. Masalai (talk) 07:55, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

The majority of my highway pictures I have plunked into Highways in Saskatchewan category If the highway image also had a sign within it, then it may be in the Category traffic sign images. Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 21:27, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Got it. Thanks. Masalai (talk) 23:17, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Arctic Wikiproject tagging

Thanks for starting the tagging. Could you keep an eye out for the "nested" parameter? See here for an example of me removing it where it wasn't needed. I'll try and help out with the tagging over the weekend. Carcharoth (talk) 04:11, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

In the picture

I've added the best pix I could shoot at SIR already. (Or did you mean add here? If so, i'll pull one.) Have a look at this & see if you think the "in action" pix are appropriate to SIR; I limited them to shots of the venue, but there are action shots from there. I'll see if I can get anything for volleyball, but don't hold your breath... TREKphiler hit me ♠ 02:30, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

How's this grab you? TREKphiler hit me ♠ 02:39 & 02:46, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I shot a bunch at the alky event last week. Have a look on Commons, there's more. If I can get to Bridge City, I'll add some there, too. Volleyball, I'm not a fan at all, so not good odds getting 'em from me. I also got a couple of the street hockey charity tourney here a couple off weeks ago, & they're on Commons, if you can figure out what they were in aid of, & think they're worth adding. TREKphiler hit me ♠ 02:44, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanx also for the praise on the bleachers pic. As noted, there's a bunch; if you search Trekphiler there, you can find all the SIR pix, & the other stuff I've put up. TREKphiler hit me ♠ 05:17, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
I think I'm OK; I uploaded again with the tag corrected. (I have enough trouble with that without trying to attach to an existing pic....) Thanx anyhow. TREKphiler hit me ♠ 05:34, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Saskatchewan WikiProject invite

Thanks for the invitation to WP:SASK - basically I'm covering politician articles throughout Canada (most recently worked on a few Quebec City mayors, for example). Not sure if I can make full-blown Sask. project membership a priority at this point, but will try to watch out more for talk templates to add. Perhaps a WP:BOT should be used to ensure that the basic project talk templates are added, where assessments could be done later. Dl2000 (talk) 04:07, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Picture of Buena Vista Entrance Sign

My camera is busted and has been for a while and can't afford a new one. I don't know if you seen it, but there is an entrance sign (for a lack of a better word) that would be good in the article. Mr. C.C. (talk) 05:59, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for a late reply, but good picture of the Buena Vista entrance sign. Mr. C.C. (talk) 18:10, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Article Feedback

Thank you very much for your comments on my articles. I'll definitely take your feedback into account and make those improvements over the next few days. I like to write about things I come across elsewhere, so in a sense I've got the references first, then write the articles second--that certainly makes it easier to source! justinfr (talk/contribs) 01:45, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Uploading of photos from the historic site http://www.sasksettlement.com/search.php?process=search&keyword=Qu&id=677

Hello Srimesh. Wikipedia appears to have substantially increased the complexity of the uploading of photos process. I am unable to figure out how properly to upload a photo of the Qu'Appelle agricultural fair in 1989 which appears at http://www.sasksettlement.com/search.php?process=search&keyword=Qu&id=677 and which is clearly in the public domain. Can you help here?

Incidentally, there is a discussion at Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan talk which you may like to hoe in on.

Best regards. Masalai (talk) 09:18, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi again. Actually the Saskatchewan Archives wouldn't be the owner of the copyright; they just hold the photo. It's comparable to receiving a letter from someone else. The other person owns the copyright even though one has the letter in one's possession. In this case the copyright is long expired.
I see what you mean, with photos, it is in the public domain 50 years after the date of passing of the photographer. In this case the family gave the photo to the archives as owner...just to be on the safe side it don't hurt to do the letter, Sk Archives, is pretty good at permissions for not commercial usage.
I'm not sure that merely adding further footnotes would satisfy the editor who has described the article as sounding like an essay. (Actually if you follow the link he provides, it doesn't have anything to do with the supposed faults he finds in the article.) And as you can see, the one person who responded to his call for comment thought that the article was just fine as it was, apart from the bulleted points in the introduction. Masalai (talk) 01:19, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
User:Kmsiever is from Alberta, and has written both SK and AB articles in the past, and Peterkingiron is from England who have made comments. Maybe what should happen is that the article could go to peer review or GA review for a few more comments. Do you use the automated peer reviewer? Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 01:35, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Could do. Or we could hang on for a bit to see if KMSiever's request elicits more comment in the meantime. It is useful to hear from people like Peterkingiron who are far away and able to lend so disinterested a perspective to the matter. Sorry to have reverted your addition to the article (it must have come across as rather peremptory; that wasn't at all the intention, and my apology for that). But there was never a Hudson's Bay Company presence in Qu'Appelle; all Hudson's Bay Company forts with the name "Qu'Appelle" were in the Qu'Appelle Valley. Masalai (talk) 02:33, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Ok can wait or that. My addition was not just about the HBC but about other tid bits from Qu'Appelle : footprints to progress: a history of Qu'Appelle and district which are also now gone. Got the info about the fort from the introduction page. I can't remember what else I had written. SriMesh | talk 02:56, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Could you make the sentences in the article shorter. There are sentences which begin to describe the paragraph, and then something else is remembered and added into a paragraph not about that entry... .such as the Queen's Hotel where the general stayed. I moved the hotel info to the paragraph about building info and left the general in the rebellion paragraph. There are a few other really long sentences that should be made into 2 or 3 sentences as well. IMHO SriMesh | talk 02:56, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Should some mention be made of Bishop Anson ? And there is more about the territorial capital stuff at The stage is set Me again...Here is some more reason for the town's decline to add to your notes population decline Here's some more about the name... including even Capel!?! Me again there is mention o the ...first observatorySriMesh | talk 02:58, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Good for you in tracking all that down! Qu'Appelle: Footprints to Progress, alas, is replete with errors; it is very substantially anecdotal, though its photos are wonderful. Several of the sections deal with places and situations I personally witnessed and while the anecdotage is lovely for its local colour, its inaccuracies unfortunately make it a rather poor source.Masalai (talk) 03:17, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Possibly you're right that a word or two could be added about Adelbert Anson with respect to the early patronage of St Peter's and the St John's College Farm by his wealthy friends in England and the connection with the Diocese of Lichfield. I shall attend to it shortly. Masalai (talk) 03:35, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
FWIW, I am actually from Saskatchewan. I was born Moose Jaw, lived 4 years in small towns all over southwest Saskatchewan, and lived for 11 years in Regina. I have been in Lethbridge since only '98. I should also mention that Lara❤Love's comment says nothing of whether she thinks the article is fine, only that she found what appeared to be a duplicate. --Kmsiever (talk) 20:26, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Re: image captions. Yeah, could do. Re: Qu'Appelle High School, not sure whether high school students are bused to the Head or the Fort; I could find out but that would be the dread "original research," alas. I suspect that there isn't going to be much enthusiasm among "editors" at large for a peer review of an article on so tiny a community but we can wait for a bit and see. Your additions are terrific; if you don't mind, I'm going to tweak them a bit for matters of prose style (forgive an old English professor for pedantry as to such matters). I'm not certain I entirely agree that it's a great improvement to insert large patches of white space in order to keep headings on the left side of the page, but at the rate text is being added at the moment it's a bit moot for the time being. Masalai (talk) 07:28, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for tweaking my additions!!! The reason I started joining wikipedia besides my excitement about Saskatchewan in general was to try to learn how to write better, I am coming along, but so slowly it feels sometimes. I try to get my thoughts down, and then I read a feature article and oh my goodness tis no good what I do. My adding the clear template to align the section headings to the left was something someone else advised me to do to fix some of my previous articles, and it did seem to make reading easier. It may be if the image caption is moved into the prose, the images will go left, right, left, right and not squish text in between as is one of the common requests at GA reviews which I have tried some articles in. This page says it better than me...Manual of Style. Kind Regards, and good luck with everything...SriMesh | talk 07:37, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Could we pop a note off to the James Hamblin school and just get a reply rom them about secondary school, and then we would have a source?!?! in the form of an email which we could then use as source. Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 07:44, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Don't worry about the size of the community this town in BC got to feature status, before any other placenames in BC...Chetwynd, British Columbia!!! With a few more tweaks, pass the peer review, we should indeed try for GA anyways, as the article is as you say growing by leaps and bounds!!!! SriMesh | talk 07:47, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Would an email from James Hamblin school satisfy the requirements? I'm not sure...generally it is necessary that the source be published. An email is certainly "publication" in the sense of the Libel and Slander Acts of the various Canadian provinces and the common law of defamation but I suspect not in the sense the Wikipedia policy-makers have in mind!
As for the newspaper article to cite, I am assuming you mean with respect to James Hamblin School. Where did you find that and what is it? Good for you again. As for the business of the "temporary capital," I think that Finn Andersen's comment is rather to the point: that the event was trivial and the cairn, accordingly, rather meaningless. I think we'd better take that discussion and the photo of the cairn out of the article, don't you? At most it might merit a footnote.Masalai (talk) 07:08, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
  • If we do indeed take the info from the article I should put the full info on the image page in wikimedia commons, in case someone goes to the photo gallery and has the same query about the image. Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 01:54, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
There was one instance of being unsure if it belonged in the article itself or not...so the section was put on the talk page so the info was attached informally. It certainly does put a smile on the face. The reference I referred to was in regards the capital business. I haven't heard back from the town re the secondary education, didn't contact the elementary yet. Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 01:57, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

It doesn't appear that anyone is going to take up KMSiever on this -- hardly surprising given the remoteness of the matter; I wonder why he got so exercised about it in the first place -- so do you mind if I now hoe in and apply an aggressive edit to the article? Masalai (talk) 21:07, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Actually, given the number of people who have chimed in for RfC, this question would best be asked on the article's talk page. --Kmsiever (talk) 01:11, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Hello there I added a note to the edits made to date on the article talk page to address PR and SAPR points. I tried to also make the article have sections and format such as that suggested at UK settlement guidelines and US city guidelines. Masalai, if ou want to flesh out some facts in the new sections I added please do...education, climate, geography, points of interest, this is not problem with me, leave a brief summary on the talk page of what you are aiming for, so that if a GA reviewer comes along, or more points on PR everything will fall into place. The lead is written at the end of formalising the article, to bring all points of all sections together in an intro along with the population count, distance from the capital city of Regina, its nearest main town, historical roots/founding, primary industries, and notable unique characteristics commonly associated with it. So maybe if everyone's heads are put together on the article's ensuing edits, the article will comply with M of S, SAPR, peer review, GA criteria, UK settlement guidelines and US city guidelines...Wheeush! Kind Regards and good luck with everything. SriMesh | talk 01:54, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Masalai, if you apply a time consuming edit now, be also prepared to do such again after peer review and GA points are brought forward, as sometimes they can be brief, other times they can be lengthy with points brought forward. If all the changes you do smoosh into the above guidelines all should work out ok and align according to the M of S and settlement guidelines, and thus would show improvements to the article. Kind regards....SriMesh | talk 02:05, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
What is the "image page" to which you have moved the captions? Masalai (talk) 02:22, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
Another good idea besides adding a full description to the image page on commons, would be to add a full description of the image in a footnote, so the image has a small caption, and if folks want more info they can go to the footnote area. I think one image does that already. Kind REgards SriMesh | talk 21:29, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for your peer reviews - just so you know, when you add semi-automated peer reviews (SAPRs) to Wikipedia:Peer review/Automated/September 2008 please check and make sure they are not already listed there - both Pokémon Red and Blue and Juno (film) were already present there (so I removed the duplicates). User:PeerReviewBot normally links the SAPRs each day, but did not do so today (not sure why). Anyway, thanks again Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:31, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

It is no problem - the count there is used to update the Featured Article statistics at WP:FAS so I try to make sure it has no duplicates. The SAPRs are normally linked by the bot about 10 UTC - I have a note into Carl to see what the problem is with no links today. Take care and thanks for your help again, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:41, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi SriMesh, since the semi-automated peer review (SAPR) page is for articles which are currently in Peer review, and the SAPR count is used to update WP:FAS, would you mind putting SAPRs on the article's talk page instead, if they are not currently in Peer review? If not, I will just add a counter to the SAPR page. Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:25, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
I have no problem just adding a note at the top of the SAPR page each month to remind myself not to count Omaha or other GA reviews (I also occasionally add notes for people who request no SAPR to add one to the count). Keep up the good work and take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:58, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Qu'Appelle

It appears that input from others has now waned to the point of extinction and it might be time again to dig in and address some of the outstanding issues. There are lapses of spelling and grammar; the emphasis on educational, cultural and tourism elements of neighbouring (and distant) towns and locales which also "Qu'Appelle" in their names but have nothing to do with the town; the discussion of the entire region in a manner suggesting that the town is its metropole, which it clearly isn't; misleading statements as to history. I shall leave it a few more days to see what further comment might arise, if any, and then hoe in. (Incidentally, Mr Siever's objection to defining local terms whose prairie usage differs from Canada-wide and international usage is misconceived. Such terms are defined in their prairie meaning in the Dictionary of Canadianisms on Historical Principles.

OK SriMesh | talk 06:36, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
My objection was that some people may be unfamiliar with the words and thus we should link them, not that local definitions were different from national ones. --Kmsiever (talk) 13:33, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Translation into French

Hi. I read a message from you dating from June 2008. You were asking for help in translating articles from English into French.
I'd be interesting in contributing for that kind of work.
I don't really understand how Wikipedia manages translations, but I'd be more confident in translating into French than into English. I don't know if it's really possible with Wikipedia:Translation.
If you're still interested in some help, I'd like yours to progress with my translation contributions.

article tagging

I see that you have tagged Talk:Falconidae with a Wikiproject Arctic tag. Given that the majority of the family is tropical I have removed the tag - I usually do remove tags on family articles unless the entire family is restricted to an area (like the todies of the Caribbean. A better candidate for tagging with WP:ARCTIC tags would be the Gyrfalcon, which is an artic bird. Sabine's Sunbird talk 02:33, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Coordinates for Redwing, Saskatchewan

I have been racking my brains and I haven't been able to find the coordinates for the Redwing article. If you can find that maybe you can add a settlement infobox as well. Thanks. Mr. C.C. (talk) 18:09, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

  • Well that was quite a challenge! It wasn't listed in either Atlas of Saskatchewan, or in Bill Barry's books or What's in a Name or the post office site, or Canada geo names, but Statistics Canada did list it as a locality of the RM, and there was in fact the one room school house listed by the One Room School House project, as well as separate school located there listed by Saskatchewan Gazette, and light industrial park according to both PAREDA and the RM website. So...PAREDA and the RM state the the Red Wing light industrial park is out on Saskatchewan Highway 2 and Red Wing Road intersects the self same highway, so .... I figures that Red Wing is there. I circled it on Wikimapia to get the coordinates. Perhaps a location section could be started or a separate paragraph in the lead, as once I found it, I rather rambled a bit in relations to other localities. Hopefully I didn't circle too much of the occupied places, as Green Acres Road is right there as well....which is probably the location of the Green Acres Locality. I found most of the online references refer to the location as Red Wing rather than Redwing. The other nearby localities which belong to the RM of Buckland according to StatsCan are Albertville, Alingly, Brewsters Trailer Court, Buckland, Casavant Acres, Crestview Acres, Green Acres, Henribourg, Honeymoon, Madden Place ,Nesbit Forest, Nesbit Heights, Nordale,Pine Haven ,Place Verte ,Red Wing, Red Wing Terrace, Russell Acres, Sharpe, Spruce Home, Wheatley, Whispering Pines Trailer Court, and White Star. How long did the Christchurch Settlement last and what was its fate, were you able to find out? Masalai (talk) 09:01, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Christ church settlement had difficulties from its inception, settlers became indignant following an inaugural speech, and there was poor crop growing weather in the late 1880s and several other problems as well as finally the govt offering 160 acres homesteads which enticed the residents to move onto their own homestead applicaiton. By 1895 the land had been parceled out to others, as the original folks who came to the Christ church settlement applied for their own homesteads. The Grisdale hall built for a proposed Brassey townsite is now the St John's Anglican Church... summary of page 95 FootprintsSriMesh | talk 17:53, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Portal:Schools

Thanks so much for adding stuff the schools portal. WikiProject Schools doesn't handle post-secondary education such as universities, and since Portal:University wasn't updated in almost six months I moved University of Saskatchewan there: Portal:University. I also created a placeholder page at Portal:University/Selected_anniversaries for the synchrotron event, although I don't know when that portal will be brought to featured standards. If you have more events for articles related to primary or secondary schools, please feel free to edit away; there isn't enough representation from many countries in the articles and events sections, including Canada. The link behind the words "WikiProject Canada Roads" was to Wikiproject Saskatchewan. If you used a substed template on my talk page (there was no comment to that effect), please make the necessary correction on the template, as to not misdirect other editors. -- Blanchardb -MeMyEarsMyMouth- timed 01:01, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

school projects

I saw your note about the school projects that were deleted. If you run into any more projects like that you might want to suggest that the students move the project to wikiversity: where it might fit in better with the mission and scope. --mikeu talk 01:29, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Portal:Canada

Hi there. I saw all your edits on the Canada portal. I would like to redesign it a bit to use less red, and basically simplify the layout, make it easier to navigate. I'm going to work on it, then post the redesign in a sandbox--I'd like for you to look at it before anything gets changed. roux ] [x] 12:51, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Hiya. I'm going to get started on the redesign now.. I'll let you know how it's going. roux ] [x] 01:43, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Hi.. I'm working through your suggestions. Right now I'm adding some stuff on provincial symbols. Question: when it rotates, does it go 1-2-3-4-5 or is it random like 2-5-3-1-4 ? roux ] [x] 04:03, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Hiya.. I think that's really way, way too much red. I'm going to have to fiddle with the template, but what about something like:
yay canada
canada rocks

roux ] [x] 02:12, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Take a look.. I've added some red back in. I think having red everywhere was overkill, don't you?

  • The DYK is now at the top of the page, and will display a single random fact every time the page is loaded. I wanted it at the top of the page because it's a great way to get people to read articles they normally wouldn't, but having 3-4 up there would be too much. And it has a little maple leaf now!

  • There's also a (currently hidden) section at the top of the page that should be finished in a day or so. On Canadian holidays & important anniversaries it will display something like:
Today is Remembrance Day across Canada
or
Today is Family Day in SaskatchewanL
  • I've figured out how to have random content normally, but we can schedule specific things for specific days. This will let us have theme days, and make sure someone's biography is featured on their birthday, that sort of thing.
  • I think we should have a small random segment on the main page that highlights all the wikiprojects that cover Canada. I know the full list is on the /Projects page, but having a single one (with a description) show up on the main page would be great--what do you think?
  • Nominating now works for Images, Articles, DYK. I just have to finish writing for Biography and a couple others.

roux ] [x] 00:04, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello again.
  • The red is OK, I like it that way in the portal.
  • That will be awesome about the dates so that bios an be featured on the days for the bio section..we don't have a whole whole lot of FA or GA bios yet, so will FA and GA bios show on the days where no bios are available?
  • To get a portal through peer review, the DYK have to be real live DYK from the DYK page. All of the Canada DYK are real live DYK to date. Nominating the other critters are ok, nominating DYK is not a good idea for portals. The DYK are posted on the Canada WP notice board 75% of the time...the rest google very well. It would be a good idea according to peer review to stuff an image in with the DYK as well if possible.
A lot of comments re DYK from peer review is to have between 3 to 5 DYK, but if you are adding this other content, perhaps this portal can have 1 DYK, as there are other items of interest as well.
  • Having a random box section highlighting both provincial and task Canadian wikiprojects and their children would be a good idea
  • This holiday concept is a good idea!
Good job

SriMesh | talk 04:42, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

  • Yes.. when there is no specific article/image/DYK/whatever for a given date, random ones will show up instead, same as they do now.
  • Nominating... I want to make it easier for people to include things. Maybe in the DYK nomination there should be something saying "Please provide the diff of this DYK approval at WP:DYK?
  • DYK.. well, we have 285 DYK, and a new one loads every time the page loads, so I think we can get away with just one
  • Holidays... it's going to take a little while to compile these, heh.
Cheers roux ] [x] 04:47, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
That would solve the DYK process, to have folks add that diff tag would be awesome...and would save the DYK process.
A note should be added that GA and FA articles can be added diretly to the box sections to cut down on administrative work, so the only ones nominated would be B or A class or top importance articles.
I had to work into the evening tonight, so I didn't help much on wikipedia tonight, can help again tomorrow. Did a few more symbol pages the other day, but still only have flags and flowers done...there are quite a few symbols altogether!
Can help compile a holiday list if that would help as a double check...SriMesh | talk 04:55, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
I'd love it if you could help with the holiday list. Getting the national public ones will be easy, I'll grab those, it's the provincial stuff that will be more difficult. How about you take Manitoba-west + Yukon, I'll take Ontario-east + Nunavut & NWT? I guess we need everything for the remainder of 2008, and all of 2009. We can worry about 2010 next year. I figure we should do all stat holidays, and any other 'special' day (e.g. Flag Day, Mother's Day, etc) that's widespread and has an article here. roux ] [x] 05:17, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

North Sea

Hey. It's been a while but I finally went back over the North Sea article and am hoping to renominate it for GA shortly. As an active contributor to the serious improvements made a year or so ago, I'd like to invite you to take a fresh look at it, do any clean up or copy editing I've missed and generally think about how to make it better. Thanks -- Jieagles (talk) 08:31, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

On my first read, the Early history, Early modern history and the first part of the 20th Century, Tourism Geological features, Tourism sections are skimpy on citation references...generally speaking every paragraph should own its own citation, and always every fact..so the GA. Can't go to GA with two error templates..[citation needed]...These errors are automatic GA quick fails real fast. So on checking the article against GA criteria we need some more citations could be plopped in before going to GA to cover...Factually accurate and verifiable: (a) it provides references to all sources of information, and at minimum contains a section dedicated to the attribution of those sources in accordance with the guide to layout; (b) at minimum, it provides in-line citations from reliable sources for direct quotations, statistics, published opinion, counter-intuitive or controversial statements that are challenged or likely to be challenged, and contentious material relating to living persons..then I think all 6 GA criteria would be a good to go IMHO. I checked all images they are all good to go - added the necessary photo credits where necessary. Put all references into link checker and there are re-direct links which I have fixed. The following dead links need to be changed to other places or references :-(

http://www.swaen.com/old_map_images.htm?zoomifyImagePath=http://www.swaen.com/os/zoom/22834/

  • This URL is not really there...it is a professor's course notes...

http://www.tcd.ie/Geology/MAIN-PAGE/CE3A8/coast.pdf For the fact...The horizontal impact of waves on the North Sea coast gives rise to eroded coasts. The eroded material is an important source of sediment for the mudflats on the other side of the North Sea

  • This URL cannot be accessed by just anybody a user name and password are needed...

http://www.netcoast.nl/publications/sealevel.doc for the fact In the micro tidal area, (a tidal range of up to 1.35 m (4.43 ft)), such as on the Dutch or Danish coasts

for the fact Notable canals include the North Sea Canal, which shortened the connection between the port of Amsterdam to the North Sea

but even though the robot found it for this page, I cannot find it in the edit summary..so this is weird. All the above dead links are corrected

for this fact...Where the dunes are sufficient to protect the land behind them from the sea, these dunes are planted with beach grass to protect them from erosion by wind, water, and foot traffic.

http://www.southampton.ac.uk/archaeology/index.html which is the same University of Southampton the redirect page goes to the Archaeology dept...and its specific page of interest..http://www.arch.soton.ac.uk/Research/Aggregates/index.htm ..called Reconstruction of Submerged Landscapes under external links is gone

I corrected many of the points brought up by the semi automatic peer reviewer ... this article is written in British english... right? ...I didn't fix the American - British English consistency issues from the semi automatic peer reviewer yet myself. This note came up in the semi automatic peer reviewer...I put a strike through on the items which no longer appear on the peer reviewer, but a few the ones left still come up at semi automatic peer reviewer....
Looked at the previous peer review ...and also added strike throughs on items I could see which were done. There are still some to do see next point as well.... Should the capital on this east...be removed...In Holland, Belgium and in the East of England (East Anglia)?? Also I think these capitals on these directions should be removed...Later, in the Mesozoic Era, a North-South trending rift valley or graben formed ..?? and it should be north-south.... Also are these titles of places names or just directions of where coasts are....British beach resorts are on the South Coast, the British East Coast ... or should it read ... British beach resorts are on the south coast, the British east coast ... I checked all the mentions of north, south, east, west for capitals and the above are the only ones I would like second opinion on...removed quite a few capitals from just directional use.
Also in the previous peer review ....Wherever possible it would be good to show the author, publication date and publisher in the citations.... should be fixed....AND ..Some measure of the shipping tonnage passing through the sea would be informative (in the "Marine traffic" section) to demonstrate the relative importance of this body of water...
Looked at all the help on the talk page and added a few more check marks... do you think all the items brought forward have been addressed? There are still a few without check marks which I didn't comment on nor did I check off ...IMHO there may be a few more points to address...
I can help with the citation references..which are missing and the ones which are existing and don't have all the info like author etc... over the next while, but I think you are right, there is not too much tweaking, and I think it should pass a GA!!! My goodness this is a long reply!

SriMesh | talk 03:52, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

  1. I'm glad you know all about these citation standards because I don't. I will try to find some citations for the above mentioned sections, though most of the history (especially early and early modern) I would say is very unlikely to be challenged and contains few specific facts that need referencing. Ill take a closer look. Tourism and Geo. Features need work though definitely. Ill also try to replace/re-find the lost citations. Also, I'd appreciate you checking over my references, they are likely to be non-standard in some way. Sorry, my talents lie far more in prose writing and editing.
  2. You are correct about all of the directions. Those listed should be lower case.
  3. The article is in British English (only becuase the North Sea borders Great Britain), but since I write AE, I can't easily check it and I probably make it worse every time I add something.
  4. I think everything except more citations that was mentioned in the previous reviews have been dealt with. As always it could use a bit more copy editing, but I've given it a hard look-over and it is much better and cleaner.
  5. I have looked several times for a total tonnage in shipping for the north sea and cannot find it. I did find a citation for the 400 ships per day in the dover strait but that has been all I could get.
  6. There are still 2 red links (theyre listed in the to do list on talk page). I'm going to try to look them up and create articles for them (probably just stubs) but if you have time/inclination feel free to beat me to it and I'll take a look at them when I get the chance.

Hopefully by the end of the week this will be in good order. -- Jieagles (talk) 09:22, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Fixed my points brought forward above and placed comment on talk page of the North Sea article of progress to date. SriMesh | talk 22:38, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

I found several mentions of both long 40's and broad 14's but nothing for citations that define them or give the history. I feel like the mentions make them pretty legit, but it would be nice to have a citation. Both coasts are jagged. I have changed it to reflect this. I think it should go for GA as soon as you have looked over the citations I added today to make sure I did them all correctly. There are also a few facts in the Oil and Gas section that I would like to cite, but nothing stands out terribly. I think its definitely ready for GA as is. I'll nominate it as soon as you think its ready too. Or you can go ahead and do it when you have the chance. Good work btw on all the dirty work and details. very systematic. best Jieagles (talk) 03:09, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

This is the best image I could find in the commons. Im not sure it adds much, but getting balancing the look of the page is nice too. I'm working on oil section citations.

The German North Sea coast
Hey. The Geology article is impressive. I have only 1 worry: accessibility. I have absolutely zero background and I found it difficult to understand. This is particularly important for the Lead section, which ought to be far more basic (ie years ago instead of period names, and maybe eliminating prehistoric continent/ocean names in favor or "what is now X"--I know that doesnt always work but it would help a lot) I tried to give it a bit of a copy edit but my lack of technical understanding made it too difficult most places and I think I won't be too much help. But good work and, obviously if you have any specific concerns, feel free to let me know and I'll be more than happy to take a look. -- Jieagles (talk) 22:22, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

ohai!

Hello partner!

I've been kind of buried in some other stuff, and haven't done much work on the portal. I was thinking maybe we should create a little template ad to place on the talk pages of CANADA members, saying 'Hey! We need your suggestions!'. What do you think? roux ] [x] 04:39, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Tis not a bad idea, but perhaps and mayhaps it would be better to tweak the portal a bit more and then send it to.... or in other words try to tackle Portal peer review as the folks there are more familiar with portal ideas than some folks who have different wikipedia interests. It is interesting to look at comments on geographical places already at peer review,... as well to go to Featured portal candidates and get ideas from their comments, and then... :-) ... to also pop around to Featured Place Portals and look at those portal talk pages and their portal peer review and their featured portal nomination process to get even more ideas.
For local interest... the Canada wikiproject notice board is pretty active for folks who like to keep a heads up on all things Canadian in wikipedia... so adding a note like above could start there and see what springs up as well....as to what these folks think have been exciting developments in wikipedia, wikimedia, wikicommons, wikiquotes, wikisource, wikinews etc etc (all the millienium of wikis) regarding Canada....
Oh my I am doing long replies today. IMHO I thinks we need an intro box section again,... as what if a grade 3 student in ....I dunno.... Uzbekistan for example stumbles across Portal:Canada they cannot glimpse what a country of Canada the portal portrays by just the rotating pretty images and pretty articles...so the box section introduction helps the newbie know what a Canada actually is...and then the box sections say look at all these cool pretty, featured things that have been done on wikipedia, wikicommons, wikinews, wikiquotes.... etc etc about the very diverse country of Canada. .. and actually on stumbling across Portal guidelines it is considered a necessity for good portals by the wikipeople who live at WP portals and portals
I have tomorrow free to putter so will help on the Portal, but I am helping on North Sea also to get references in ship shape.
If you were going to contact other WP Canada folk via a talk template maybe start with other editors from various provincial Portal history pages...or other CA editors from the CA portal history edit pages as they have already puttered on a portal.
Tonight, though, it is getting late my time..tis good to hear from you again...SriMesh | talk 05:11, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

north sea history

hey. good work on the North Sea research! lots of good stuff. A couple of points: 1. To my knowledge the Cod Wars dealt almost exclusively with North Atlantic waters around Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Was there also conflict on the Danish coast? That needs to be clarified.

Perhaps the wording should be different. The war was indeed mostly around Iceland and the Faroe Islands which Denmark owned. The war involved the Danish naval patrol which enforced the fishing geographical limits, and Britain was anxious that the territorial limits may also extend to the North Sea on the Danish shore as well {http://www.hullwebs.co.uk/content/l-20c/industry/fishing/cod-war/cod-war-1893.htm Cod Wars - 1893]

2. What exactly was the bum boats law? It is not clear from the article or the book linked as a ref.

"bum boats" north sea Google 10 book results

3. Good work digging up the 19th century warfare stuff. It's a great fit in the History article; do you think we should add a sentence to the main North Sea article? The problem is that the other powers (Denmark, Austria, France) blockaded Prussia/Germany for a few months with superior navies before they were quickly defeated by Prussia's armies. There were no actual battles, landings, or even skirmishes and so it wasnt actually that important to the outcomes of the wars. That's hard to sum up in a sentence but not really important enough to devote a paragraph to in the main article. I am a history buff (especially German history), so I think that it is fascinating and important, but I'm not sure it's justified.

That is so cool that you are a history buff..I am around my neck of the woods...Saskatchewan and Canada, but I find it fascinating to venture further afield once in a bit to learn something new here and there..so that's why I helped out at the ACID of North Sea, it is fascinating. I have caught a few TV documentaries since then too. Wheeush is it huge!!!! compared to my little waters on the prairies here.  :-)
The reason I added it to the History article and not the main article, is due to the length of the main article. The main thing which I noticed which ran through most of the skirmishes was that the marine commerce was hampered during this episodes, one side would try to block the commerce of the other nation in order to get ahead in the war...that was the main thing affected on the North sea waters, were the merchantment ships...and expeditions were sent out so the other nation could not enter the North Sea from their ports/harbours which in fact, as you say produced no battles, but there was still tension going on on the waters.
I found the beginning of the 19th century not too much going on, first the earthquake, then the floods, then the huge attack of malaria along the coast, so not battles per say, as everyone was busy elsewhere surviving. But I left these notes only on the talk page.
It will be interesting if any Geological history regarding the North SEa coastline comes up. I can't open up -Philcha's link given, and cannot find another which is very pertinent. I could only find the one item about the coastline changes so far... the Jutland peninsula - island.
The only major thing about the second world war which isn't mentioned too much on the history of North SEa page was that fishing was indeed hampered, no one was going out and about due to the Naval Mines which probably affected / minimized the battles ongoing there. From this Greenpeace and others said the fish population of the North Sea rebounded somewhat due to the lack of fishing during these years. These Naval Mines would have also affected marine trade on the North Sea in these years. Quote:British and German warships ranged the sea again during World War II, but confined much of their activity to laying mines and patrolling the waters.: from HowStuffWorks "The North Sea"
Philcha also brought in some interesting works regarding The British Isles and the Age of Exploration...This could be paraphrased, and added to the History of the North SEa...then the summary of the article History of the North Sea could again be studied to see what should be left in the North Sea article, and what should be removed. The North Sea is pretty long.

North Sea Geological History

Seems this, North Sea Geological History, exists in article space rather than as a user subpage as it states. Did you intend to place it in article space? If so, you need to remove or modify the work in progress disclaimer tag. If you meant for it to be in user space, then it should be moved there as perhaps User:SriMesh/North Sea Geological History. I support your work here, but we need to either move or clarify. Vsmith (talk) 01:35, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello there thank you for your note. I moved it to user space, as I think there should be more filling in without some sort of under construction tag, as there are still empty sections. so it has a redirect to User:SriMesh/North Sea Geological History, as I left other messages to the article space North Sea Geological History where it may eventually live. Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 01:56, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi, SriMesh, I've just had a look at User:SriMesh/North Sea Geological History. I think it would be best to start in the Triassic, when Pangea started to break up - see the map at the top of Triassic. Even then there was not a real North Sea, just a lake in the middle of a desert to the east of what is now Great Britain but was then part of northern Pangea, see Image:230 Ma plate tectonic reconstruction.png. There was a sea in the right place in the Jurassic, but it was an extension of the Mediterranean, which is is the remnant of the once-mighty Tethys Ocean - Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and all the countries on the N side of the Mediterranean were a sparse archipelago. See also Image:Pangea animation 03.gif. You generally won't find any mention of the Atlantic until about130 million years ago, i.e. earliest Cretaceous. The coastal maps book I mentioned, viewable at Google books, shows the start of something like the modern configuration of continents and seas, IIRC around 93 million years ago. I'm not trying to discourage you, but to save you from wasting time on periods when it's doubtful that there was anything you could call "North Sea" even if it was wet and in the right place relative to the landmasses from which Britain and Scandinavia emerged.. --Philcha (talk) 09:41, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Original Ft Qu'Appelle

"A Hudson's Bay Company trading temporarily stood near the future site of the town from 1854 through 1864 when it was re-located back to its previous site, the modern Fort Qu'Appelle in the Qu'Appelle Valley."

Are you really quite sure about this? Masalai (talk) 13:30, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

All I can do is cite sources, and then see if the other facts therein vouch for their reliability.
  • The History of Fort Qu'Appelle and the Area
  • The Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan | Qu'Appelle
  • Qu'Appelle : footprints to progress: a history of Qu'Appelle and district
  • The QU'APPELLE RIVER "Great Canadian River
  • According to the Atlas of Saskatchewan there were 3 forts. One referred to on the map as 147 in the area of Qu'Appelle named Fort Qu'Appelle II 1854/66 HBC The last two are in the area of Fort Qu'Appelle (to the north east). One of these is numbered 148 on the map and is called Fort Qu'Appelle III 1866/1917 HBC and the third is numbered 505 and is named Fort Qu'Appelle I dated 1853 and is also HBC.Fung, Ka-iu (1989). I suppose the most definitive method and the best primary source record rather than secondary source record would be to email or postal mail the Hudson's Bay Company Archives | About HBCA in Manitoba...or find someone who lives in Manitoba to go there in person, to find out if there are text records etc... North Sea (prehistory)

Hi SriMesh, I got a stack of scientific articles and a book which discuss the geology of the North Sea since the Last Glacial Maximum. Now looking at the talk page of North Sea it looks as if you are preparing this article for FAC, and doing very good work too. So I thought I should let you know that I am currently rewriting the Doggerland article in my sandbox. I don't think the history of the North Sea is complete without its (inhabited!) prehistory, and because of global warming this is also currently a very hot topic. It would be great if you could leave me a note before going to FAC so that I have a day or two to finish the Doggerland article provisionally, integrate it as a subarticle in History of the North Sea, and summarise it in a new subsection of North Sea#History. This way the Doggerland article will get some exposure, and we will be sure that the way it's summarised doesn't cause any regressions. Thanks. --Hans Adler (talk) 22:09, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

This is absolutely wonderful! I will for sure let you know. Maybe we can add some information form your article you are revamping to the North Sea Geological History as well. re: Skating in Saskatchewan

Hey. I don't know much about figure skating in Saskatchewan. If you're interested in getting info on skating events held in SK, the Canadian Figure Skating Championships has an (incomplete) list of locations of the Canadian Championships (national-level competitions) and Skate Canada International has a list of locations as well (international competition). There may have been other international competitions held in SK, but I can't remember which off-hand. You could also take a look around the Skate Canada website, which is the web site of the national governing body for figure skating in Canada. Hope that helps. Article assessment

Thanks for the re-assessment of Leader, Saskatchewan and the upgrade to C-class. I will definitely work on some more improvements to raise it up to B-class, if not better. --Drm310 (talk) 19:10, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Indian Head

I'm not sure how useful the several photos of cairns and monuments are in indicating what Indian Head is like. On the other hand, you have provided several wonderful photos of the town to the Wikipedia Commons and I wonder if it might not be useful if you inserted these into the article on the town. Just a thought. Best wishes, as ever. Masalai (talk) 15:04, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Re: Arnold Tremere delete

Dear SriMesh,

I thank you for your comments. It really is a pity that the original article, references and pdfs that seemed to have meet many of your criteria were deleted. I cannot afford the time to start this again and frankly remain rather discouraged about how this was handled.

Arnold Tremere

Hello there. This article was deleted. It was started by a new user. Is there any way to help them understand the process. They may continue to contribute, and it sounds as if they have access to some good information. SriMesh | talk 01:30, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

While I'm happy to answer questions, it looks like your question could have been answered and resolved more quickly if you had used my message wizard. It's linked as "Talk" after my name and at the top of my talk page. Why not try it next time?
WP:YFA might be a good place to point them. Stifle (talk) 10:01, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi SriMesh, Thanks for the redirect. If I find a pocket of time over the Christmas holiday I may be able to revisit this issue, and I now where to restart. Kind regards and Season's Greetings, Amazona01 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Amazona01 (talkcontribs) 17:54, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Arnold Tremere THANK YOU

Dear SriMesh, I greatly appreciate the effort you spent improving the organization of the Arnold Tremere article; the article is considerably improved. Thank you also for all the other forms of support. I also looked at the strong examples for the other agriculture people on Wiki. It seems I have a little more research to do. I can certainly provide info on the heritage of Arnold Tremere as well as lectures and University involvement and will add these as soon as possible. In addition, I could get access to the topics and locations of the many international conferences (or limit the additions to those conferences where he was a keynote speaker). It seems your highlighted articles really differ in the extent to which they describe community and philanthropic endeavors. If it is not too abusive, I would really appreciate your candid opinion on how far to continue the editing process... for example, what kind of rule of thumb do you employ in deciding how much detail to provide and how to avoid becoming tedious?

On a separate note, if horses are your thing, I have added a great deal of detail to the Campolina page. It is currently poorly referenced as much of what I added is information that I just happen to know and there is no "official" documentation for this type of thing (especially in English). If you do find that you have sufficient interest and time to have a look and want to offer comments, I would love to know where it could be clarified or improved.

Thanks once again, Amazona01--Amazona01 (talk) 23:37, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Wade Regehr

Hi SriMesh, I have added Wade Regehr's name to the "famous" people from Shaunavon. This individual is certainly famous in science but, probably does not warrant a full write-up. I am still hoping that this addition can stay as I think that it provides people from the south western rural Sask region a type of role model who managed a tough career path well beyond the traditional scope.

Thanks for your lovely feedback on the Campolina page. I will try very hard to find formal references for this information. The conflicting information you encountered in your search is typical of the challenges I face in writing on this type of topic. Much of the information on this breed was gathered by exposure to the judges' commentaries in Brazil. It could be very hard to get some of this in writing but I will keep at this one. Soon, I will have a closer look at Georgia O'Keefe and if changes are made, might ask you to have a quick peek at that work. She has many truly excellent and detailed biographies and autobiographies so refs won't be a problem there. Thanks again and all the best, Amazona01--Amazona01 (talk) 15:43, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
