Orphaned non-free image (Image:MazdaNavajo.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:MazdaNavajo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 03:26, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re-post mediation request edit

Hello I posted the following right before your talk got archived (in Archive 3):

Thanks See my talk for my initial response. As a temporary measure, I think the page should be moved back to Foreign relations of Western Sahara for three reasons:
  1. There was no talk and the WP:RM guidelines were ignored.
  2. This issue has come up before, and consensus was to leave it where it was (see its talk).
  3. I actually moved the page back after it was moved once and User:Juiced lemon moved it again, showing that he was more interested in the page not being where it was than moving it to what he thought was the most appropriate name.
Needless to say, the proper guidelines should be implemented for a move, etc. etc. If he wants to meet me on talk there, I'd be happy to discuss the issue. If you want to respond to me, I will not watch your page, unless you request I do; consequently, please post on my talk. Thanks. -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 04:04, 22 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have three MediaWiki installations on a WAMP server, with only sysop/bureaucrats, but no steward/oversight in the userlist of usergroups.

What would I need to do to get CommonSettings.php to work?? I can set up Makesysop.php and Oversight extensions correctly, but I'm having trouble with Commonsettings.php

All advice is appreciated.}}

Thanks, --SunStar Net talk 12:57, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, you might want to take that to the MediaWiki Support Desk. Even though I do know about installing and setting up the software, I am not that good with installing extensions to it. Those who tend to respond to {{helpme}} reqests tend to not know that much about the setting up (from my experience). You are unlikely to find an answer here, but do try the MediaWiki Support Desk, or the entire MediaWiki Site, or even #mediawiki - the IRC help channel for MediaWiki. :) -- Stwalkerster talk 13:05, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Is it a violation of the wheel warring policy to undelete something that someone has deleted previously, just so you can export it to your own MediaWiki installation and then delete it again, once the export of files has been done?
I was reading mw:Parameters to Special:Export and would like to know if this is OK to do here on Wikipedia. If I was a sysop here, could I do this within admin policy or is it not permitted?? Thanks, --SunStar Net talk 12:23, 26 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I assume you're talking about an article. I'd direct you to What you can do about it for several options. If there is good reason to restore the article, the administrator should undo his actions. Otherwise, these admins should at least give you access to the text for exporting. I'm not familiar with the exporting process you describe, so my apologies if this doesn't apply. Hope this helps. Thanks for the above advice. It wasn't so much for deleted articles, although that is useful, but also for things like deleted templates etc. Thanks, --SunStar Net talk 12:42, 26 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, just as any administrator can retrieve a copy of a deleted article, they can retrieve copies of deleted templates and any other deleted material for that matter (images may be an exception, I know at one point the undelete feature for images wasn't working and I'm not sure if that issue was resolved). I would suggest leaving a message on the talk page of one of the administrators listed in the category provided by Hoof Hearted (talk · contribs). --NickContact/Contribs 17:35, 26 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

AIV reports edit

  Thank you for making a report at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Reporting and removing vandalism is vital to the functioning of Wikipedia and all users are encouraged to revert, warn, and report vandalism. However, administrators generally only block users if they have received a recent final warning (one that mentions that the user may be blocked) and they have recently vandalized after that warning was given. The reported user has not yet been blocked because it appears this has not occurred yet. If this user continues to vandalize after their final warning, please report them to the AIV noticeboard again. Thank you. --DarkFalls talk 11:23, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of J2ru edit

A tag has been placed on J2ru, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia per CSD g2.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the article and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the page's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. Darksun 12:10, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Creating an article that states "This page should not be recreated." is not appropriate. If something should not be recreated, contact an administrator to protect it instead. Metros 12:26, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Why would you create a test page like that? You obviously know better than that if you just called it a test page and linked to the policy that says they should be deleted. Metros 12:39, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Is it OK to use {{attribution}} on images I upload, or is it better to use {{GFDL}} on images I've created myself. I'm a bit confused as to which is the best one for my images.

Thanks, --Solumeiras talk 17:05, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

It is better for the project if you release the images as public domain, GFDL, or under some commercial-friendly Creative Commons license. But that release would be irrevocable, as you would effectively be giving up your intellectual ownership of the image. I encourage you to do this because Wikipedia images with "free use, provided that" licenses could potentially be revoked at any time by the copyright holder, which means they most likely won't appear in print versions of Wikipedia. --Ryan Delaney talk 17:57, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I suggest using the licensing box when you upload. The options in that box are copyleft {{self|GFDL-no-disclaimers|cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0}}; attribution {{self|GFDL-no-disclaimers|cc-by-3.0}} and no restrictions {{pd-self}}. --h2g2bob (talk) 18:26, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I've added a number of sources since you last commented on "Who Invented Surfing" I'd appreciate your looking at the new documents especially #4. Also, Henning has written a lot about surfing including one book about Polynesia...his reseach indicates Peru as the origin and is generally accepted in the most of "Knowledgable" surfing community. The authors and their credentials of Document 4 are a sign of this acceptance. Surfmac2004 21:16, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I noticed you moved Lostock to Lostock (Greater Manchester). Thank you for this, though it is standard practice (per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (settlements) that the formula "PLACENAME, CEREMONIAL COUNTY" is used, so it should've been titled Lostock, Greater Manchester (without the brackets).

Helpme request 2 edit

{{helpme}}

I have an alternate account, SunStarNet 1.0 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log), which edits in my userspace only - as it says on the userpage. Is this an acceptable use of an alternate account?? I realize high edit counts in userspace are frowned upon, so that is why I created the account.

Also, I wish to rename the account, would I have to do it through my regular account (this one), or through the alternate account itself??

Thanks, --Solumeiras talk 13:21, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think that's acceptable as long as you're clear about who owns it and what it's for, which you have done. As for renaming, it's simplest to request it with the alternate account because that makes things easier for the bureaucrats to process the request. Hope that helps! --ais523 13:28, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

{{helpme}}

Thanks for the help, ais523. The only reason I asked about changing the username with the alternate account was to avoid accusations of using a sockpuppet abusively. Am I right or wrong that it's a non-abusive use to use the alternate account if requesting a rename of it?? Since there was nothing in the sockpuppetry policy, I just wanted to clear up the matter. Thanks, --Solumeiras talk 13:30, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

That wouldn't be an abusive use; abusive uses tend to be things like evading blocks, vandalising whilst maintaining a 'clean' record on the main account, double-voting, and so on. You're not proposing to do anything remotely close to that. --ais523 13:34, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

{{helpme}}

Thank you for that. It's not a "good hand, bad hand account situation to have an alternate account that plays about with my own personal sandbox, which is what the alternate account also does as well. Using this account (my main one) to edit the main Wikipedia sandbox (Wikipedia:Sandbox) (not my own personal one) - which I do sometimes, albeit not very often - is OK, isn't it?? Apologies if I'm asking too many questions, it's just so that I understand the policy a bit better, since it's gone through a massive re-write since the last time I read it! Thanks, --Solumeiras talk 13:40, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't see a problem with it, as long as you are not using any accounts for disruptive purposes. May I suggest adding the following tags to the user pages of each account:
  • {{User Alternate Acct | MAIN ACCOUNT}} (replace MAIN ACCOUNT with the main username)
  • {{User Alt Acct Master}} (add this to the secondary account user page).
These are not required, but would clear up any problems that you may have. - Rjd0060 15:35, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Helpme request - ParserFunctions edit

{{helpme}}

This is the template I am working on:

The template is {{User inactive travel}} and I wish to add a parser function to the template that enables them to do this:

I would also like to know what the correct HTML colour value for the colour in this template I created below (using Template:Banned user and Template:Indefblockeduser as a basis for it) is:

so that I can change the background colour on the ambox for {{User inactive travel}}

This will be useful for my template-editing skills, all advice and help is appreciated.

Also if you can, please add any template advice to User:Solumeiras/Template advice for me, so I know where to look next time.

Thanks, --Solumeiras talk 13:09, 25 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I can help you make a field for both the date of return, and the place of visitation if you wish, and also, in case you were not aware, "alternate account" box you made, already exists at {{Doppelganger}}. Let me know if you'd like the template edited, or if you were looking for an explanation of how to do it. I know how to make it work, but I probably wouldn't be able to explain it, lol. ArielGold 14:48, 25 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Okay I made the template, with the background color you wanted, there are three parameters: First: Month/Day of return (required). Second: Year (required), and third: Place of visiting (optional). It is here: User:ArielGold/sandbox2

Example use:

{{subst:User:ArielGold/sandbox2|January 1|2008|Ireland}} which results in:

I'll tweak it so all fields are optional, I just threw it together real quick, give me a few minutes before you copy it. ArielGold 15:00, 25 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm still tweaking it so the punctuation works with, or without the parameters. When I'm done, would you like me to update the template, or just drop you a note here? ArielGold 15:31, 25 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Okay it is fixed. If you use the first parameter, you have to use the second. If you use the place parameter, you have to add the month and year for return (for now). Also, only one word for "place", you can't add "conference to", etc., because it automatically parses the stuff into a wiki link. I could add a fourth field to give additional info, if you want, but I think it is sufficient for now, I can have someone who knows more look at it further if you like, but I fixed yours so it displays correctly. Durova RfC edit

A few hours ago you asked if the RfC should be closed. [2]. The talk page response was negative. On the project page, editors continued to endorse various the various statements, and an additional statement was added. There was nothing out of control about it. There was not the "flame war" that you suggested might arise. And yet, with the RfC running, with negative feedback on the idea of closing it, you closed it anyhow.

Citing WP:Bold won't do it. Stopping people from talking in this instance was reckless. Please revert yourself. Jd2718 (talk) 21:14, 25 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hayden Panettiere edit

Hi there.

I see you tagged the Hayden Panettiere article as having spam ("external links to websites which primarily exist to sell goods or services, use objectionable amounts of advertising, or require payment to view the relevant content"). I could not find any evidence of this. Perhaps you would be good enough to point out these links? -- JediLofty User ¦ Talk 13:58, 30 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Could you please post an explanation of why you feel the Claire Bennet article is tagged the way you have? I'd like to defend or improve the article but you've left no guideline as to what you believe the problem is. Thanks for the interest and help improving these articles. Padillah 14:14, 30 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

If you want the same functionality on your own wiki, you can simply copy the pages on Wikipedia to the same pages on your own wiki (you will need to be an admin on your own wiki to do this, and it will need to be a running a relatively recent version of MediaWiki; there's also a configuration variable called something like $wgUseSiteCssJs (although I can't remember exactly what) that needs to be set). You may want to edit the pages somewhat because parts of them are somewhat Wikipedia-specific (the ambox code, for instance). There's also MediaWiki:Common.js, which provides scripts rather than styles; you may find parts of that useful too, although don't copy everything blindly because some of it relies on linking to the Wikimedia servers; my advice is to delete any section of it that contains the word 'wikimedia', usually as part of a URL. --ais523 12:17, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi. You may want to read over Wikipedia:Speedy keep -- I'm not sure this AfD was speedy-keepable (although the article should definitely be kept). --A. B. (talk) 21:05, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

An editor has asked for a deletion review of TomTom. Since you closed the deletion discussion for this article, speedy-deleted it, or were otherwise interested in the article, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Iterator12n Talk 01:06, 8 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have closed the DRV and reopened the AFD. Please note that non-admins closing AFD discussions are advised not to close debates which are close calls (in this case, one more keep than delete opinion) and a speedy keep should only be declared in the limited cases described on the speedy keep page. Thanks for your help with AFD and please don't take this negatively, only as a sign that the decision was not as unambiguous as you thought. Stifle (talk) 13:58, 8 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

RFPP edit

There is absolutely no reason to suggest that we unprotect some of our highest vandalism targets just to give vandals a Christmas gift. If you have valid reasons to suggest we unprotect these articles, let them be known, but your suggestions that they should be lifted for that reason alone are disruptive. Metros (talk) 17:32, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

You also mentioned that they "should not be long-term semi'd anyway". Well, unfortunately, the George W. Bush and Lindsay Lohan articles come under "indefinite semi-protection may be used for: Articles subject to heavy and continued vandalism, such as the George W. Bush article", in the semi-protection policy. Both of these articles are subject to constant vandalism, even when semi-protected. I hope this clears things up. Thanks! Your essay is just that, an essay, and isn't, as far as I can tell, a proposed (and definitely not an existing) policy or guideline. Replaceable fair use Image:Samara1.jpg edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Samara1.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 20:25, 1 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure what you have installed on there but try disabling the other things you have to see if they conflict. I can't see anything obvious. x42bn6 Talk Mess 22:12, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

George W. Bush, sprotect edit

Is there any particular reason why you keep changing the semi-protection template from the small version to the large version? Your last edit summary "Fix sprotect template" really isn't accurate, as the small version was created for pages that are protected for a long period of time. As the GWB page is protected indefinitely, the small, less obtrusive icon should be used. - auburnpilot talk 13:53, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Corey Delaney MFD edit

I have reverted your close of Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Corey Delaney. This is a hotly debated MFD with lots of arguments going on. This is outside the scope of non-admin closures. Non-admins should only close clear consensuses on non-controversial topics. Metros (talk) 14:20, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Give me the short version of the history of disputes - my understanding was that it's just one persistent banned user messing around. east.718 at 17:20, January 17, 2008

Chris Griffin edit

Thanks for that cleanup. I am going to try and work on some Family Guy pages soon enough, will you be able to help me with the Chris Griffin and Carter Pewterschmidt articles - ensuring they keep within the manual of style?? Thanks, --Solumeiras talk 18:17, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am happy to support such efforts, and am adding Carter Pewterschmidt to my watchlist. Note that Carter is a minor character of questionable notability independent from the show, and has been merged to Pewterschmidt family (which itself may be merged to List of characters from Family Guy or Lois Griffin at some point).
WikiProject Family Guy is seeking editors who can help bring these articles to encyclopedic quality. You are highly invited. / edg 18:33, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

WP:UAA reporting edit

I removed PAGENAMEE that you reported. Old, inactive usernames like that are better left alone, they don't cause any trouble by just existing. Mangojuicetalk 18:50, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

WP:AIV report of User:PAGENAMEE edit

Hello – This is a quick note to remind you that WP:AIV isn't the appropriate place to report usernames you feel are inappropriate. In addition, this user hasn't made any contributions, so there's no vandalism. In the future, please use Usernames for administrator attention or Requests for comment/username to report issues about usernames.

I used to preemptively block usernames like this one, but now I prefer to wait until a contribution is made. Blocking it now probably won't have any effect on the person who registered the account, because they simply registered and then left – it's probable he/she only wanted to see if that username could be registered, or it could be that he/she couldn't think of another name. However, other admins may differ, so by all means report it to UAA now, if you like. :-)

If you have questions, let me know – and work on lowering that Wikistress level up there, too. This is just a website, babe, and worrying about pixels isn't worth it to your health or sanity. I have 'big picture' words on my userpage if you want to see them. Take a deep breath and don't worry so much about this place. :-) Thanks – KrakatoaKatie 19:00, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, I'm just back after a Christmas knit-a-thon that took from the first of December until a few days ago. I'm coaching Tiddly Tom as an admin hopeful, and in a few moments I'm going to get back to the AFD backlog that seems to never die. I probably won't get back to article work until I've been back for a few days and have caught up on all the Wiki-drama and changes that occurred over the holidays. Take care, and pop over if you have questions or need help! :-) - KrakatoaKatie 19:17, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

RfA new question edit

Hi. I had seen your question a few minutes ago. I plan to answer it tonight, as I am currently at work and your question requires some time to look at the Game page and learn about it in order to be able to answer; time I do not have while at work. Cheers! -- Alexf(Talk/Contribs) 19:16, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

MfD edit

Just curious as to why you didn't notify 68.39.174.238 of the MfDs you just created. He's a long standing contributer (There's just one user who's been on that ip for years) and would probably be an admin if he was registered.--Phoenix-wiki 21:11, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's OK. 68.39.174.238 (talk) 16:20, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Unblocking edit

Hello Solumeiras, WP:AIV is for reporting users that qualify for a block, not for users to be unblocked. If the blocking admin isn't active anymore, you can file a report at WP:ANI. I will look at the IPs you reported. --Oxymoron83 12:58, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi edit

Hi Sol, I was wondering where SunStar Net had gone :) I'm well thanks, not working on articles much right now, just killing some time here really :) Hope you're doing great, ~ Riana 12:30, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

RfB edit

Ehm, the RfB nom you transcluded seems to be botched -- it's missing a username. - Revolving Bugbear 23:40, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have removed your partial inclusion of the RfB for Alison because she has not accepted the RfB. The candidate must accept the nomination before discussion begins. Additionally, an RfB is started with a new article like an RfA instead of just inline in the RfB section. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 23:43, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Solumeiras, thank you so much for your kind nomination, and for having such confidence in me. I'm honoured and delighted! However, I'm really sorry but I cannot accept at this time. I'm just not ready for bureaucratship and checkuser duties have me swamped with work right now. I'm also active on a number of other wikis including Commons, where I just passed my RfA and need to focus there for a while. Thank you so much, though, for your faith in me, but I can't accept. I'm so sorry - Alison 23:54, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
