Welcome to the twenty-first newsletter from the Growth team! New project: Positive reinforcement Mockup of the Impact module, redesigned to add Positive reinforcement. The Growth team started a new project: Positive reinforcement. We want newcomers to understand there is an interest in regularly editing Wikipedia, and we want to improve new editor retention. We asked users from Arabic, Bangla, Czech and French Wikipedia about their feedback. Some people participated at mediawiki.org as well. We summarized the initial feedback gathered from these community discussions, along with how we plan to iterate based on that feedback. The first Positive Reinforcement idea is a redesign of the impact module: incorporating stats, graphs, and other contribution information. This idea received the widest support, and we plan to start our work based on the design illustrated on the side. Please let us know what you think of this project, in any language. For mentors We have worked on two new features, to inform them about the mentorship: In the Mentor module, we now provide more information about the public nature of the mentors/newcomer relationship and the fact that talk pages are public. We now allow newcomers to opt-in and opt-out of mentorship. These communities will be able to configure locally how this feature works. [2] Suggested edits Selecting topics ― We have created an "AND" filter to the list of topics at Special:Homepage. At the moment this feature is tested at pilot wikis. Changes for Add a link ― We have built several improvements that came from community discussion and from data analysis. They will be available soon at the wikis. Algorithm improvements ― The algorithm now avoids recommending links in sections that usually don't have links and for first names. Also, it now limits each article to only having three link suggestions by default (limited to the highest accuracy suggestions of all the available ones in the article). User experience improvements ― We added a confirmation dialog when a user exits out of suggestion mode prior to making changes. We also improved post-edit dialog experience and allow newcomers to browse through task suggestions from the post-edit dialog. Community configuration ― We allow communities to set a maximum number of links per article via Special:EditGrowthConfig. Future change for Add a link feature ― We will suggest underlinked articles in priority. [3] Patrolling suggested edits ― Some users at Arabic Wikipedia, Spanish Wikipedia, and Russian Wikipedia told us that "Add a link" and "Add an image" edits can be challenging to patrol. We are now brainstorming improvements to help address this challenge. We have already some ideas and we started some work to address this challenge. If you have any thoughts to add about the challenges of reviewing these tasks or how we should improve these tasks further, please let us know, in any language. Community configuration Communities can configure how the features work, using Special:EditGrowthConfig. Thank you for reverting the vandalism on the Robb elementary school shooting, i clicked on a wiki link to that page and saw someone type that the shooter fortunatly shot 19 spic children and 2 WHITE teachers as he should. That was clearly unacceptable and was about to revert it myself and then refreshed and it was already reverted. Cheers

Hello! I’m wondering with the recent Supreme Court ruling about abortion I realize everyone should be sensitive no matter how you feel about it. I watch some shows on the cable channel TVLND in the early evening. I have noticed the past two evenings a commercial that has been shown from a pro- life group called Focus on the Family that shows a baby womb and babies, says unltrasounds change minds. I believe everyone has their own choice. I have a question regarding high resolution image presentation.

I've noticed on many high resolution map images that there is no way to zoom in enough to read the key on the map image. Hi, Wintermuet! I haven't worked a lot with images, but it is definitely desirable to be able to read the map. You should be able to click on Wikipedia photos to enlarge them. There's also a WikiProject dedicated to making Wikipedia maps easier to read – if you have a question, you can probably get good help on the project talk page. Hope this helps! The problem is that when I click on the image it only enlarges to the size of my window, and doesn't allow me to look at it in its largest resolution. It's an auto-resize feature that prevents me from making it larger than the window even if the image is far larger than any reasonably browser window.

Hi, Aditraghav! It looks like your sandbox draft was deleted by an administrator for lack of notability. Notability is one of Wikipedia's core content principles. Unlike on social media and other sites, articles in Wikipedia have to have had significant coverage in reliable sources that are unrelated to the subject. In other words, a person shouldn't have an article until multiple reliable people/organizations unconnected to that person write about them. If an article cannot demonstrate notability, I'm sorry, but it should not be on Wikipedia at that time. (Note that sometimes it is simply too soon, and the right time may come later.) You may find an alternative outlet would work better for your purposes. You are, of course, also welcome to contribute to Wikipedia in other ways as well.

Hi, Claybox! A user removed your edits because of concerns that they seemed a bit promotional, which is not allowed on Wikipedia. The website of a company heavily involved in that profession will likely have bias in that area, which makes the source less reliable and more likely to just be trying to make the company look good. That's why it's better to add sources that are independent, which helps keep the article neutral. Sources closely affiliated with a company in a profession are more often primary sources, which can be used in some cases but are not good for all cases. You did format the reference correctly, though, you just need to use a more independent source.
As for affecting your account, there shouldn't be a problem – all of us have made mistakes or misunderstood something on Wikipedia at some point in time. The important thing is to listen when someone explains what the problem is, ask questions if more clarification is necessary, and learn how to avoid that mistake in the future. Hi mentor, I know the sources important. And I found pages on some sources that marked “may earn an affiliate commission”. This source will be removed even if it does not receive any sponsorship, right? And I read some about Wikipedia notability and found about Product Reviews can be a source but I don't know how to judge if these review sources are suitable to be cited. As I mentioned above, some sources gain affiliate commission, even though it is a reliable source. I wonder if I can find some review sources without any commission or interests to cite. @Claybox: It looks like the pages marked as possibly earning an affiliate commission are independent of Wikipedia, and I doubt they would be considered reliable sources, so they would probably be removed. That section about product reviews in the notability policy is mainly geared towards explaining how they can contribute to the notability of a product, but the guidelines there for using them are still helpful: A product review should be significant, independent, and reliable. If you haven't already read the reliable sources policy, you should go ahead and at least skim it; it has a lot of good information about how to determine what sources are good (or at least better). Hi, Sweet hopemc! Creating an encyclopedia article is very difficult on Wikipedia, especially for newcomers, because there are a lot of policies that have to be followed. Wikipedia articles have to be about notable subjects (subjects that have received significant coverage in multiple reliable sources), have to be verifiable (the information in the article should be traceable to its sources), and should be written in a neutral point of view (neither try to look the subject look good nor bad, but simply report facts as indicated by the sources). Because there's a lot that goes into creating an article, it's recommended newcomers start with other contributions and get a better handle on how the encyclopedia works prior to creating one (you can find some editing suggestions on your homepage). If you still would like to create an article, you should keep the three policies I linked you to earlier (notability, verifiability, and neutrality/neutral point of view) in mind and read this page, which guides you through creating an article. Ah, Brebis Blanche, your issue is that the English Wikipedia requires accounts to be extended confirmed to use the translation tool, which means your account has to have existed for thirty days and have made 500 edits. I think the reason this is in place is to ensure that users get a better feel for the en.wiki's policies and guidelines – writing an article is one of the most difficult things to do, and translating an article is not unlike writing a new one in that different wikis have different guidelines and requirements for articles. Wikipedia:Translation has instructions for translating other articles for the English wiki; note that translated articles must still meet the notability guideline and follow other relevant policies. Since your account is not autoconfirmed yet, you would need to put the article though Articles for Creation. Otherwise, you can make other edits to gain more experience and come back to translating the article with this tool when you are extended confirmed. Hi again, Brebis Blanche! Looks like there have been two comments from more experienced editors. VersaceSpace mentioned the issues about the social media links and paid editing (with more discussion on Wldfaclon's talk page, which also has the decline reason as that editor submitted the draft). However, the declining editor was Jamiebuba, who declined because the editor felt the sources you used did not establish notability. This is absolutely essential for an article to become an article; if you can show that something is notable enough for an article, it can always be improved, but notability cannot be gotten if you don't have it (here's is the general notability guideline). However, LUMOS Orchestra may be notable; you just need to make sure you are providing the sources that establish notability (you can take a look at the notability guideline for musicians). Hi, Silvernomushi. I'm afraid I have bad news: you shouldn't. Wikipedia considers that promotion, and it's not allowed. If you are notable by Wikipedia's definition, or become so in the future, it is possible that someone else might write an article about you; however, that article would have to follow Wikipedia's content policies. In other words, the article would have to be written based on what reliable sources say, and would have to be neutral; you don't have control over an article about you (see An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing).

Hi, SamratMT! Creating a new Wikipedia article is one of the hardest things for a newcomer to do on Wikipedia, as there are a lot of policies and guidelines that apply. New articles have to be about subjects that are notable by Wikipedia's definition, have to be verifiable (backed up by reliable sources), and must be written in a neutral tone, as well as conforming to stylistic policies and similar. Creating an article for a person is even harder, as it has to follow a higher standard than other articles. It's a lot easier to gain some experience editing Wikipedia and getting a feel for how the project works first before creating an article.
My apologies if this is discouraging, but a lot of newcomers have jumped right into creating an article and had a difficult experience because they weren't familiar with what should go into creating an article. The article looks like it was created once before (in March of this year), and editors found several problems with it, not least because it was not notable by Wikipedia's definition. The concern about the current article is that the problems with the first edition of the article have not been resolved. This is the first discussion about deleting the article; it lists the problems editors found with the article.
You can contribute to the AfD (which is here). You should first read this guide to discussion in AfDs; this guide might also be helpful. Basically, deletion comments include a) what should happen to the article (keep, delete, merge, etc.), and b) why. If you think the article should be kept, you should explain exactly why the article meets Wikipedia's policies (including notability – here's a specific guideline it needs to meet). Keep in mind, though, that several other experienced editors have already looked at the article and commented on the AfD and think it doesn't meet the necessary guidelines, so it will likely be difficult for the article to pass the necessary guidelines.
If any of this is confusing or you have any other questions, feel free to ask me! I know this can be difficult; creating a new article is one of the hardest things for a newcomer to do on Wikipedia, and many editors recommend working on improving other articles first in order to get a feel for Wikipedia policies before you take on the task of creating a new article. Making sure you understand comments and information from other experienced editors (such as the advice Deb gave you on your talk page) will go a long way towards helping you figure out what you're doing. Jadedhippo, there are a number of ways you can get involved; it really depends on what you want to do. I mostly do copyediting and de-orphaning, typically on orphaned articles I come across, but many articles can also do with expansion (check the assessment table on the project page for articles that could do with some work.) If you prefer, you can focus on an article (or a few) and improve them as much as you can. I've been working on Mario Gómez and Manuel Neuer in this fashion and have had a peer review for the former in order to better improve it. Also, the project talk page often has discussions including things that need to be done, such as this discussion. Happy editing! Newcomers tasks reach the 500,000 edits milestone — more data publicly available As of the last week of June 2022, the newcomers of the world have completed over 500,000 newcomer tasks. In other words, newcomers have made over half a million Wikipedia edits via Growth’s “Suggested Edits” module. About 30% of those edits were completed on mobile devices. Usage continues to increase; in June 2022 almost 50,000 newcomer tasks were completed. We have added some new data to Grafana. You can now check the number of edits and reverts by task types, or the number of questions asked to mentors. You can filter the data by wiki. If you have any questions, or there is more data you want access to, please let us know. Ongoing projects and explorations The new impact module is part of the Positive Reinforcement project. The image displays the mockup for mobile we used for user testing. We are continuing our work on our new project, Positive Reinforcement. User testing of initial Positive Reinforcement designs was just completed. Interviews were conducted in Arabic, English, and Spanish. The outcome has been published on the Positive Reinforcement page. We are now utilizing user testing feedback along with prior community feedback to iterate and improve designs. We are exploring the idea of a Copy Edit structured task. We have tested copy edits in Wikipedia articles for arwiki, bnwiki, cswiki, eswiki (Growth pilot-wikis) and enwiki with two different methods: LanguageTool and Hunspell. We will share more details here and on the associated Copy Edit page once the evaluation is complete. Add an image was utilized at GLAM events in Argentina, Mexico, and Chile. For an overview of what was learned from these events, read: #1Pic1Article I: how Latin American heritage experts added images to Wikipedia (in English). Experiments analysis Add a Link Experiment Analysis has been published. The most important points are: Newcomers who get the Add a Link structured task are more likely to be activated (i.e. make a constructive first article edit). They are also more likely to be retained (i.e. come back and make another constructive article edit on a different day). The feature also increases edit volume (i.e. the number of constructive edits made across the first couple weeks), while at the same time improving edit quality (i.e. the likelihood that the newcomer's edits aren't reverted). Newcomer task edit type analysis has been published. Communities had expressed concern that newcomers whose initial edits were structured tasks wouldn’t go on to learn how to complete more difficult tasks. The Growth team data scientist conducted a Newcomer task edit type analysis to see if this was indeed the case. Results from analysis indicate that this likely isn’t a significant concern. More than 70% of users who start with the easy task "Add a link" also make another task type. Read the full analysis and methodology here. News for mentors A new system for the mentors list The configuration of the mentors list will change over the next weeks. In the future, mentors will sign up, edit their mentor description and quit using Special:MentorDashboard. This new system will make the development of new features for mentors much easier. At the moment, the mentor list is a simple page anyone can edit, unless it’s protected. With the new page, mentors will be able to edit only their own description, while administrators will be able to edit the entire mentors' list if needed. The deployment will happen first at the pilot wikis, then at all wikis. Existing lists of mentors will be automatically converted, no action will be needed from the mentors. [7][8] Mentors will be informed about the next steps soon, by a message posted on the talk page of existing Mentor lists. Learn more about this new structured page on mediawiki.org. A tip for mentors Did you know that mentors can filter their mentees' changes at Special:MentorDashboard (and star the ones that require attention)? This feature helps to keep an eye on newcomers' edits, helping mentors to fix minor details, and encourage them if necessary. And did you know that mentors have special filters to highlight their mentees' edits at Special:RecentChanges? Look for the following filters in RecentChanges: Your starred mentees, Your unstarred mentees. Other improvements Some improvements will be made to the mentor dashboard in the coming weeks: While we now offer some options for mentors to take a break, the option to quit mentoring was not easy to find. This will be improved. [9] Mentors at wikis using FlaggedRevisions will have a way to discover their mentees' pending edits. [10] Dashboard discovery for new mentors will be improved. [11] Recent changes and fixed bugs We moved to a new Image Suggestions API. This new API will allow us to deploy Add an Image to more wikis. It sounds like you have a conflict of interest (COI), which is when you are editing Wikipedia about someone you have an external relationship with. More specifically, you are a paid contributor, which means you are required to disclose that information as explained here before editing about the subject, and you should follow the instructions in this section of the conflict of interest guideline.

Creating an article can be difficult on Wikipedia, and paid editors must do so by putting their drafts through the Articles for Creation process. You will first need to determine if the subject of the article, your CEO, is notable by Wikipedia's definition; a person must be notable to have a Wikipedia article. If notability is determined, you will then need to make sure that you follow the other core policies. Wikipedia articles must be verifiable and keep a neutral point of view, the latter of which in particular can be difficult for a paid editor.

You should also know that should the article be created and accepted, it will not belong to you, your CEO, or your company. (See also the essay An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing.) Wikipedia does not allow self-promotion or advertising – it is contrary to its purpose. That's part of why there are so many rules paid editors have to follow.

In summary, if you wish to write an article yourself, you should:

• Read the conflict of interest guideline (especially the section about paid contributions) and its partner about disclosure and disclose as necessary;
• Create a draft only if the subject is notable;
• Base the entire draft on reliable sources for verifiability and be very careful to keep a neutral point of view;
• Submit the draft article through the Articles for Creation process.

I'm going to assume by 'pages' you mean Wikipedia articles. Articles are typically pretty tricky for newcomers to create on Wikipedia, as there are a lot of policies and guidelines that apply to articles that take time to understand. It's usually easier to start with smaller edits (you can check out your homepage, the Task Center, or the Community Portal for ideas). If you'd still like to create an article, though, you should check out Your First Article.

As for attaching them to your account, I'm not sure what you mean – you can link articles you work on to your userpage, but it won't belong to you; everything on Wikipedia is released for the general public.

Hi, Tiwan UwU, and welcome! Creating an encyclopedia article is very difficult on Wikipedia, especially for newcomers, because there are a lot of policies that have to be followed. Wikipedia articles have to be about notable subjects (subjects that have received significant coverage in multiple reliable sources), have to be verifiable (the information in the article should be traceable to its sources), and should be written in a neutral point of view (neither try to look the subject look good nor bad, but simply report facts as indicated by the sources). Because there's a lot that goes into creating an article, it's recommended newcomers start with other contributions and get a better handle on how the encyclopedia works prior to creating one (you can find some editing suggestions on your homepage). If you still would like to create an article, you should keep the three policies I linked you to earlier (notability, verifiability, and neutrality/neutral point of view) in mind and read this page, which guides you through creating an article. Hi, JudeKerr, and welcome! My apologies for the late reply. Articles on Wikipedia have to be notable by Wikipedia's standards; that's the policy by which it is decided whether or not an article belongs in this encyclopedia. If an editor thinks an article is not notable, they can nominate it for deletion, and other editors will discuss whether they think the article is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia. That happened to an article aobout the subject in this case, and editors decided that the subject was not sufficiently notable, so eventually the article title was protected from being created because it had already been discussed. If someone thinks they can demonstrate notability, though, they can create a draft and submit it through the Articles for Creation process.

Hi again! Someone on Wikipedia called TrottieTrue reverted my edit for Craigneuk. I updated it so it would list 2 new places as myself is a Craigneuk Resident realised they don't list the 2 new places. The subject reverted it back to an edit that did not list the 2 new places. Citing to being a resident counts as original research, which isn't allowed; however, if you can cite a source with the updated information, you should be good to go. Happy editing! Jamie Campbell Bower Page

Hi, I’d like an explanation as to why on the introduction to Jamie Campbell Bower’s page it is listing his character in Stranger Things as Vecna/Henry Creel/One. I now understand that spoilers are not a basis for removal or changing of a post, but his character isn’t even named that on nextflix as far as I can tell, or IMDB. His role maintains the name Friendly Orderly. What is the reasoning the current page should stay the same if it’s not accurately reflecting the published name of the character. Hi, Julius Raphael Ochai, and welcome! I'm assuming you're talking about your userpage? Wikipedia does not have profiles. The user namespace is a place to talk a little about yourself, particularly as an editor; the mainspace is solely for encyclopedia articles, which are governed by a variety of content policies. If you're trying to edit Wikipedia about yourself, you'll need to know that Wikipedia does not allow promotion and requires disclosure if you are a paid editor or have a conflict of interest. If you're talking about userpages, though, and what you want to add is within the scope of the policy about userpages, those guidelines provide some help. It's not really as important work as improving articles, though, so no need to stress over it too much – it doesn't have a huge bearing on editing, though I'm sure software experience will help. Hello, I was my state's rep to the Equality Federation before and at the meeting in which we founded it as a unique, separate organization and gave it its name. It was fostered, staffed and funded by NGLTF, the Task Force (now NGLTFQ). Not one word acknowledging this empowering assistance appears in the Equality Foundation entry. I had experience working with many national lgbt orgs in my day and the task force was always there to help--without trying to take over or claim all the credit. Hi, Bessiesdad! I'm not familiar with the organizations you're referring to. It sounds like you want more information added to an article. You shouldn't edit articles directly when you have an external relationship with their subjects, but you can request on the article talk page that information be added. Welcome to the twenty-third newsletter from the Growth team! Highlights Mentorship: We released the new structured mentor list to all wikis. This change makes mentorship easier to setup, manage and use. Positive reinforcement: An improved impact module is available for testing. Screenshot of the positive reinforcement module improvements. Positive reinforcement: an improved impact module to test The goal of the Growth team is to encourage newcomers to try editing for the first time, and encourage them to keep editing. We want to increase newcomers' motivation by showing them how impactful their edits are. Newcomers have access to an impact module; you can find yours at Special:Impact. The revised impact module provides new editors with more context about their impact. It will display the number of edits, the number of thanks received, the last time they edited, the number of consecutive days they edited, and the number of views for the articles they edited. This module will soon be available at our pilot wikis starting December 1. You can already test this new module at Beta Wikipedia. For safety reasons, do not use your regular account and password at Beta wiki. Create a new, specific account for this wiki, with a different password. Structured tasks: improvements based on patroller feedback After the deployment of Structured tasks, we received feedback from various communities regarding how patrollers of recent changes were feeling overwhelmed by an increase in edits to check, and how some edits were poor quality or of poor relevance. We made several improvements based on the feedback we received. Several points of improvement have already been addressed: Patroller fatigue: By default, newcomers can complete up to 25 "add a link" tasks and 25 "add an image" tasks per day. If patrollers are overburdened, each community can use Special:EditGrowthConfig to lower that limit. Quality of edits: what constitutes a "quality edit" is not a well defined concept. We initiated a discussion and summarized our findings. We also worked on the following improvements: Add a Link Underlinked articles are now prioritized, so it's less likely that newcomers are adding links to articles that are already have a lot of links. The confidence score was increased, so suggestions are more likely to be accurate. The default number of suggested links per article has been lowered to 3. This can be changed at Special:EditGrowthConfig. Communities can also exclude articles containing certain templates or categories from being suggested. Add an Image Lists will no longer receive "add an image" suggestions. Disambiguation pages will no longer receive "add an image" suggestions. We have many further improvements we plan to make to "add an image" in early 2023. [16] The Positive Reinforcement project will also address some of the concerns around encouraging newcomers to progress to higher value edits. The Growth team will soon work on strategies geared at "Leveling up" newcomers so they progress from easy to more difficult tasks. Recent changes All Wikipedias now have the same onboarding experience. Previously, at a few wikis, 20% of new accounts didn't get the Growth features when they created their account. These 20% of new accounts were used as a control group, in order to know if the Growth features were changing newcomers' behavior. Experiments have shown that Growth features improve activation and retention, and as we want to provide the same onboarding experience at all Wikipedias, we have decided to remove the control groups. We will utilize control groups when testing new features, and German Wikipedia keeps a control group at their request. [17] The quality score for "add a link" suggestions will change. We will suggest less links for each article, but they will be more accurate. We will first deploy it at our pilot wikis, and then to all other wikis where this feature is available. [18][19] Growth's features FAQ has been updated and expanded. This page centralizes all the information about Growth features. We invite you to read it, and, if you can, to translate it. News for mentors All Wikipedias can now setup and manage a mentorship program in an easier way. We changed the process to make it more reliable, easier to improve and easier to use. Wikipedias where mentorship hasn't been enabled yet can turn mentorship on following a new process. When done, mentors can sign-up by visiting Special:MentorDashboard. Wikipedias where the list of mentors already existed have been converted to the new system. A new special page — Special:ManageMentors — now displays the list of mentors. This page can be transcluded on any other page. There are also new processes to signup as a mentor or to quit mentorship, and we improved community mentorship management. The Mentor dashboard's "Your mentees" module will have a new footer, called "Recent changes by your mentees". This footer will include a link to Recent changes, where mentors can see only edits made by their own mentees. [20] Deployments Add a link has been deployed to a 5th round of wikis. Blitz: Our October Copy Editing Blitz focused on July and August 2022 request months; and articles tagged for c/e in December 2021 and January 2022. Hi, こもれびーさん! Articles are typically pretty tricky for newcomers to create on Wikipedia, as there are a lot of policies and guidelines that apply to articles that take time to understand. New articles have to be about subjects that are notable by Wikipedia's definition, have to be verifiable (backed up by reliable sources), and must be written in a neutral tone, as well as conforming to stylistic policies and similar. It's usually easier to start with smaller edits (you can check out your homepage, the Task Center, or the Community Portal for ideas). Hi, Sarahadad20! Sorry for the delayed response. Looks like a reviewer already rejected the draft, so it's no longer in the queue. To undo an edit, you can go to the page history of an article or page and click "undo" next to the edit you wish to undo. If the edit you want to undo is not the most recent, conflicting edits can make it more difficult; you can, however, edit the revision you want to return it to and publish changes that way – I've done so on the sandbox here.
