Speedy deletion of Template:Academy Awards nominees edit

A tag has been placed on Template:Academy Awards nominees requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Thanks. --MZMcBride (talk) 02:59, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Centralized discussion about dates edit

Hi Patrick. I noticed you created Category:Dates and there is currently a centralized discussion going on, at Wikipedia talk:Centralized discussion/Removal of many individual date articles, about individual date articles (after June 30, 2003 was listed for deletion by someone). Your input on these articles would be appreciated. Thanks. --Pixelface (talk) 18:56, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Age templates edit

Sorry about the age templates. I had tested them in all the places that I use them, but didn't think of them being used in equations. I've added nts versions of the templates at {{age/nts}} and {{age in days/nts}}. --Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 16:41, 20 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Help:Namespace edit

Hi Patrick. We stumbled on each others edits a lot lately, seems you are hard working in partly the same areas as I am. :)

I noticed you changed the links in the section "Template programming" that I had added to meta:Help:Namespace (Help:Namespace). Your edit comment and the change doesn't seem to match, or I am missunderstanding what you tried to achieve. So here's what I see:

  • The way you used {{mlw}} didn't change anything, as far as I can see. The way I coded it made it look exactly the same. Both ways also make the link to a local blue link on the English Wikipedia.
I agree that my edit summary does not apply, I thought on Wikipedia en: would give interwiki link style, like w:. Even so, the problem with en: is that when copying the wikitext to wikibooks etc. the target would be wrong. Also, {{mlw}} has additional Linksearch functionality.--Patrick (talk) 07:38, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • You used {{tiw}} on the template names. The old way I used already made the links turn local blue on the English Wikipedia. But if you really wanted to add all those tiny "( talk edit history links )" then I see what you were doing. But that adds unnecessary complexity to the text. And I think it is much better that the first-time visitors to that template come directly to Template:Main talk other and see its documentation, rather than clicking one of the "( talk edit history links )".
{{tiw}} on Wikipedia does not have a history link. I also removed the talk link. {{tiw}} and {{tim}} are the standard ways of linking to templates from help pages.--Patrick (talk) 07:40, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

As I see it you made the text dependant of more templates and thus more likely to break when replicated on other language Wikipedias and on other projects, without really adding anything. Or what am I missing?

As mentioned, avoiding en: helps in this regard. Yes, each wiki needs these templates, but there are only a few of this kind.--Patrick (talk) 07:31, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and you can respond here, I'll be watching this talk page.

--David Göthberg (talk) 03:28, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ah now I see, thanks. I have also read up a little meanwhile, so now I understand better what you mean. (I think that was my first edit to such meta help documents.) I didn't know when I coded that that "en:" links cause problems on Wikibooks etc. And I just tested, you are right, "w:" links doesn't turn into local links here at Wikipeida. :(
And I hope {{mlw}} is available at all the projects as you say. Since I see now that you are right about it doing a better job.
So, since I don't like the extra links that {{tiw}} causes then I guess I should change all the links to using {{mlw}} to get the look I want.
This interwiki stuff is tricky.
--David Göthberg (talk) 09:10, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

{{main talk other}} now broken, please revert edit

Hi Patrik. I saw you stumbled on one of the more subtle details of {{main talk other}}. Empty versus not defined template parameters are not the same thing. So I left a message for you at Template talk:Main talk other. I knew I should have documented the details of that code more...

--David Göthberg (talk) 14:20, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Another admin reverted your edit, so now the template works again. That was a subtle thing so I am not surprised you didn't see it. Its pretty counter intuitive that {{{variable|default}}} doesn't produce the default for empty but defined variables.
--David Göthberg (talk) 14:49, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I know the difference between empty and undefined, but that an empty "demospace" is supposed to work like an undefined one was only implicitly suggested in the usage example section. I added that to the Basic functionality section.--Patrick (talk) 15:19, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I took a look, yeah good addition. Thanks for helping with ironing out the kinks in the documentation.

AfD nomination of List of non-pornographic films featuring nudity edit

An editor has nominated List of non-pornographic films featuring nudity, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of non-pornographic films featuring nudity and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 21:59, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Suppressing printing of placeholder images edit

Good day! I have a couple of questions.

I noticed that you wrote the Template:Image class and successfully added it to Template:Infobox actor and that placeholder images do not print on articles with Infobox actor. I presumed this was due to the class="metadata dummy" of image class but when I tried adding Image class to Template:Infobox Gridiron football person, it still shows on the print view. Did I do it incorrectly or was there something else done with Infobox actor to prevent placeholders printing?

This is also very pertinent to a discussion going on about placeholder images at Wikipedia:Centralized discussion/Image placeholders and I wonder if you could pipe in with your opinion and expertise on this matter particularly in Technical limitations of present system section but, of course, generally as well.

Thanks, DoubleBlue (Talk) 01:04, 17 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

New Project edit

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 17:50, 3 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of The Elements of Dynamic Symmetry edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article The Elements of Dynamic Symmetry, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Re: UEFA Euro 2008 edit

OK, fair enough, but I assume the "abbr" parameter in the table actually does something or it serves no purpose. Could we not find a less invasive way of displaying what the abbreviations stand for than a big ugly template? – PeeJay 10:02, 8 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I wondered about that "abbr" too, it does not do anything, it seems. Linking the headers to an explanation is another possibility.--Patrick (talk) 10:06, 8 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps. What we really need is a single appendix-style page that any football article can link to. It would negate the need for keys and legends in most articles. Another alternative would be making it so that the expanded term comes up as a tooltip when you roll over the abbreviation. – PeeJay 10:22, 8 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
That is fine, but do not remove a legend before creating a proper replacement!--Patrick (talk) 20:34, 8 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Patrick --

Just in the future, when you are moving pages or chaning pages to redirects, I think it would be helpful if you did not mark those changes as "minor edits". It makes it difficult to effectively monitor a watchlist. Thanks |► ϋ r b a n я e n e w a l ◄| (talk) 16:08, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Patrick, thanks for addressing my question. Could you please explain how I convert the file on the address bar to HTML so I can copy/paste? Thanks. JohnClarknew (talk) 14:26, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Things depend on operating system, browser, and email program. I tried to explain in Wikipedia:Help_desk#Copy.2Fpaste_link_to_WP_article_to_email how it works for me. As I said, when I copy the rendered link itself (not the URL in the address bar), and use HTML-format in email program Outlook (a setting, not a conversion I have to do myself), the link works.--Patrick (talk) 14:41, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Diminishing and increasing marginal utility edit

The only thing required for diminishing marginal utility is that

where   is the best possible use of the   unit of the good or service. The only thing required for increasing marginal utility is that

Neither of these imply any quantification of utility, and certainly none of the examples that you furnished imply quantification of utility. There is no good purpose in adding an assumption of quantification to the section of “Marginal utility” which discusses the “law” of diminishing marginal utility. The article discusses quantified utility in due course.

And please be aware that mainstream economics has made a terrible hash of things when it comes to labelling various conceptions as “ordinal” or as “cardinal”. Not only do most economists confuse various possible sorts of quantifications, but they don't even engage in the same confusions, so that one author will use “cardinal” for any case where only affine transforms are allowed (eg, for EU maximizers), and another will use it to mean cases where interpersonal arithmetic is allowed, and much wanking has been echoing through the literature for literally decades as a result. —SlamDiego←T 02:35, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

No content in Category:Images with 2D dihedral symmetry edit

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Images with 2D dihedral symmetry, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Images with 2D dihedral symmetry has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Images with 2D dihedral symmetry, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Expectation edit

This edit is unfortunate and I'm surprised that it persisted so long. Just go to expectation and click on "what links here" and you see that a very large number of the links should point to expected value, the mathematical concept. Furthermore, with a very small bit of common sense, one would EXPECT that. Accordingly I've moved the page to expectation (epistemic) and changed expectation to a disambiguation page. Template substitution edit

How do I create a conditional new line in wikitext when substituting a template? I'm trying to add a newline when e.g. parameter "align" is present.

Sample

1. Sample template : "Template:testnewline" ([3])

ABC{{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>#ifeq:{{{align|}}}|{{{align}}}|
 align = {{{align}}}|}}
DEF

2. When called empty ({{subst:testnewline}}), it should just create

ABC
DEF

3. When called as {{subst:testnewline|align=left}}, it should create

ABC
 align = left
DEF

but it generates [4]:

ABCalign = left
DEF

The newline keeps getting stripped as per Meta:Help:Newlines and spaces. I couldn't figure out the workarounds described there, e.g. with Template:For loop. I was wondering if you would help me with this. It would help me improve a template like [5] -- User:Docu

Put ABC (or some last part of it) inside the ifeq [6].--Patrick (talk) 22:13, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, that works. As I like to add several conditional lines, I suppose I just need to put one inside the other. -- User:Docu

That does not work if the conditions are independent. In that case another method is needed, like that of Template:Conditional template call with newline (applying it or doing it in a similar way).--Patrick (talk) 23:59, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I tried to work it out by calling {{!}} with [7], but still ended up with [8]. BTW I added the optional fields to the documentation at 1 while looking at 2. -- User:Docu

I added substctc=subst:[9], it seems fixed now. I clarified the purpose of p1n and p1v.[10]--Patrick (talk) 08:51, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. It works. I added it as a sample to the documentation. -- User:Docu

Infoboxes edit

Hi there, I notice you've contributed to quite a few technically bits of Wikipedia, so I was hoping you could help me. I'm currently practicing making an infobox on my userpage. I looked on the page Template:Infobox and found some examples to work on and have also been looking at other infobox templates as a guide too. The problem I am having is how to use optional headers. So, here's my scenario:

I have an infobox about a professional dancer, outlining their personal details, training school and what company they dance with. As dancers are promoted within the company, this influences the roles they play, so I would like to include the date when the dancer was promoted at each rank. However, if no information is provided about when the dancer was promoted, I don't want that section of the infobox to be seen.

This is what I have at the moment:

|header1 = Dates Promoted
|label2 = Principal
|data2 = {{{Promoted_Principal}}}
|label3 = Senior Soloist
|data3 = {{{{Promoted_Snr_Soloist}}}
|label4 = Soloist
|data4 = {{{Promoted_Soloist}}}
|label5 = Senior Corps
|data5 = {{{Promoted_Snr_Corps}}}

Now I just need to know how to hide all of that if no data is given for any of those fields (Principal - Senior Corps).

I hope I'm making sense, I'm trying to learn this by the bucket science method of "I don't know what I'm doing, but if I keep trying it different ways, I'm sure to get the result I'm after". Thank You!!! Crazy-dancing (talk) 15:16, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and I would love to know how you d those collapsible bits as well. So for example if you look at the version my userpage, I have included a list of previous companies. How would I make that into a collapsible list? Crazy-dancing (talk) 15:25, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

New Pages edit

A tag has been placed on New Pages, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to a user page from the main/article space.

If you can fix the redirect to point to a regular Wikipedia article rather than a user page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, you can request that administrators wait a while before deleting it. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your reasoning on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. -- IRP 00:17, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Soest edit

Can you change that to Soest instead of Soest in all applicable templates? A disambiguation page is not very usefull. Peter Horn 00:55, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Then why do the following still appear in Pages that link to "Soest"  ?
  1. Template:Table row Dutch municipality (simple)
  2. Template:Table row Dutch municipality (simple)/doc
  3. Table of municipalities of the Netherlands

I'm puzzled. Peter Horn 15:47, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

NNDB edit

I see that you have a link to NNDB on something you call a "ref tab" on your user page. Please be aware that NNDB has been ruled as explicitly failing to be a reliable source in multiple discussions on this site. Please do not use it as a reference for any article, as someone would just have to clean up after it later. DreamGuy (talk) 21:58, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Voyager 1 edit

Hi! Are there sources for the interesting statements about Voyager 1 you added recently? Thanks! --Cyclopiatalk 13:14, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I changed now 15 to 19 m/s per year, found by comparing velocities on two dates from http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/weekly-reports/index.htm; 1000 km/s is from Escape_velocity#List_of_escape_velocities; 4 km/s is from the escape velocity formula; specific energy and terminal velocity are from the formula of kinetic energy.--Patrick (talk) 22:31, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ehm, this is brilliant, but unfortunately I'd say this violates WP:OR. --Cyclopiatalk 22:33, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I would say simple arithmetic is not OR, it just provides some clarification.--Patrick (talk) 22:37, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Unreferenced BLPs edit

  Hello Patrick! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 942 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:
