Reliable sources on Wikipedia

edit

I understand that you are working on adding citations to Wikipedia articles as part of this project. Please note that adding citations is only helpful if the sources you are using meet Wikipedia reliable sourcing criteria. This edit, for example, is just a website selling a product and is nowhere close to meeting the "reliable, third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy" required to be used as an inline citation. Prior to editing further, please review this page to ensure you understand what constitutes a reliable source. Thank you, -- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 22:51, 30 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello Ngangaesther, and welcome to Wikipedia. While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Doug Weller talk 12:14, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Linda Kwamboka

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Linda Kwamboka requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://philanthropyforum.org/people/linda-kwamboka/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Ways to improve Esther Ratugi

edit

Hello, Ngangaesther,

Thank you for creating Esther Ratugi.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

No spacing in first section around punctuation. Capitalization is non standard & inconsistent. Multiple typos. Single source, needs more sources to both verify claims and to show notability. Currently hard to see if this meets WP:GNG.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|JamesG5}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Hello, Ngangaesther. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Mamá Tunza".

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Hello Esther, Lingualibre supports Kikuyu language (iso:kik, d:Q33587/lingualibre:Q329) recording. But after verification, we don't have any Kikuyu wordlist available to start recording and need to build one.
May I suggest you an English wordlist to add Kikuyu translations to it ? (or any other larger language your community is fluent in). It's 90% easy, but we also have a translation help to do a very clean work. It's a work to take on calmly, expect to split it along few months and few people for 3~5,000 items, or a one day editathon with 8 people translating ~600 words each.
Translating from a list also presents the advantage of creating a bilingual learner's lexicon, so we can later feed Wikidata lexeme or some learning application.
This could be an avenue to go forward. Yug (talk) 🐲 08:32, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hey, so following your request I quickly create lingualibre:List:Kik/words-by-frequency-00001-to-02000 were you or your community can add Kikuyu. That bilingual list will then be used both to record Kikuyu via Lingualibre and possible to create a multimedia bilingual Kikuyu-English dictionary such this bilingual Chinese-English dictionary, using Lingualibre audios. Could be pretty cool. Yug (talk) 🐲 09:53, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
hello, am still working on the list but this might take time to translate anyway you can check on few that l have already work on@Yug Ngangaesther (talk) 12:43, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that's the spirit. I changed you → Wee into you → wee, we assume default usage is lowercase.
We have a hackathon in early August, where I plan to add support for such bilingual list. Thereafter recording will be easier. We only support PC, and ideally in silent room, with microphone if possible.
Creating such bilingual lexicon can be tricky. If you meet difficulties, feel free to ping me and discuss it with me. Either I can point you the answer in a translation help, or your language brings us a new use case which we can add to our help page. Yug (talk) 🐲 14:01, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hello Ngangaesther,
You are already going well on this project, so I'm only suggesting a possible avenue for later I guess. I collected the username of the top editors on Kikuyu language in a hidden comment here. If at some point you want to make a call for other to join your translation effort, you/we can ping those users as well. Ping 10 users, one may join the effort. Who know.

Abigael Kima moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, Abigael Kima, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three, to be safe. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia).
