Bulgarian cinema
Hi. Welcome! Yes, please develop the 1970s, 1980s 1990s and 2000s lists like Bulgarian films of the 1960s. Somebody was working on them but gave up. Fair use rationale for File:BashMaystorat1.jpg

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Hi and thanks for your enthusiastic and regular contributions to Wikipedia! We really need contributors to enrich the quality and quantity of Bulgarian articles, so your activity is greatly appreciated.
There's some stuff that you should know in order to improve the quality of your articles, though. I'd advise you to read the Wikipedia:Manual of Style to learn how to structure and style an article so that it is in line with the rest that we have.
From the articles that I have reviewed, the main points would be the following:
- Avoid too many sections and headings, especially in short articles. For example, the Naum Torbov article wouldn't need more than a single section, if any (intro then, say, Biography, and no Gallery at all for a single image).
- Don't bold the subject name after the first mention in the intro.
- Rely on the quality and number of references rather than images. We have Wikimedia Commons where you can organize image galleries. In Wikipedia, images are meant to be an illustration to content, not to be the main subject. Try not to use galleries and too many images at all, only the most important.
- Employ footnotes and cite templates to improve WP:Verifiability. Also, try to use reliable sources, like books, academic journals or, at worst, reputable websites and publications. At the moment, your articles are referenced only by links to websites in a separate section, which is not enough. Use {{cite book}}, {{cite news}} and {{cite web}} as much as possible, and fill all the parameters that you can.
- Stick to the official transliteration system. E.g., Abadjiev should be Abadzhiev. Also, titles of films are not usually written first in Bulgarian and then in English. Pick one. If the movie has an authentic English name, stick to it.
- As for the images that you upload, there's one very important problem: copyright. Wikipedia only accepts free images. For Nikola Marinov, you have uploaded five fair use images and organized a gallery, and this is not exactly permitted. If there are no free images, do not upload any unless you absolutely must. For example, the Nikola Marinov article would require a single fair use image, no more, and only if no free pictures are available.

- Hi! Why are the images not suitable? I have investigated the regulations here for a month and finally I started to do a work according to these very complicated regulations. It seems to me that this so called local upload function are made here just for cases as Dimitar Panov's one (acctually 80% of the articles in wikipedia maybe even more). - Thanks for the above written advices and suggestions and I do read them carefully! By the way I've already made some changes in accordance with them. As for the images I agree there are some articles with too many photos and I've started reducing them. But article with no image is almost equal to nothing. There are too many of that kind especially connected with Bulgaria (actually not only with BG). So I think it is high time this problem to be solved so that they become readable. - Hi and thanks for the response! I can't agree with "article with no image is almost equal to nothing", but I know what you mean, images can indeed add a lot. They should be selected with care, though, because too many of them can actually lessen the total effect.
- I understand why you insist on adding images to articles, I had the same urge back when I was involved with the project for the first time and the image rules were not still quite clear to me. I'll try to explain why non-free images should be avoided.
- First, Wikipedia is called the free encyclopedia because all content is meant to be free, as in freely and unrestrictedly usable and redistributable. Fair use images are not free, and this is because their author (not the uploader, but the person who took the photo or created the painting) retains their copyright.
- Let's review the Dimitar Panov case. Per the guidelines (read Wikipedia:Non-free content):
- "Multiple items of non-free content are not used if one item can convey equivalent significant information." As both photos show the subject, we don't need two, but only one.
- "Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." Not the use of detrimental here (вреден, пагубен). Is the lack of a photograph detrimental to the Dimitar Panov article? That's disputable, and my opinion is that it is not. Of course it adds to the article, but the photograph is in no way an absolute must, as people can fully understand the content without the portrait of Panov.
- A great example of fair use is the first photograph on Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, without which the understanding of the article would be seriously hampered. After all, the article is about the photo. Do notice the huge blocks of rationale on the file page.
- "Copyrighted images that reasonably can be replaced by free/libre images are not suitable for Wikipedia." While Panov is deceased and it is not possible to take a new photograph of him, it is not impossible that somebody donates a free photograph that they have already taken.
- Generally, I would advise you to avoid uploading any non-free images and any images about the copyright status of which you are unsure. That's what I do in the vast majority of cases. Photos that you have taken yourself or that have been explicitly released under a free license are most welcome, of course.
- I hope you'll understand why it's vital for Wikipedia to stick to free content. It's one of the ideas about this project that I love most. All the best and keep up the good work! Todor→Bozhinov 22:15, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
Hello MrPanyGoff, not to pile on here, but let me just say that what Todor says above is very sound advice, please take it to heart. About non-free images: for an article about a deceased actor, one characteristic screenshot is certainly legitimate, but anything more than that would need to have some very good justification – such as explicit discussion of an actor's stylistic development compared across different films, etc. You can definitely not have multiple non-free images for individual films just for the sake of "having more images" and making the article more visually appealing. As for the article about that early 20th-century architect, couldn't his work be illustrated by present-day images of buildings that still exist? Were they all destroyed? What an attack against the creative energy ;)!!! On top of everything there is a copyright problem with an image whose author is writing these lines... I can't believe... Maybe I forgot to check on something... I see there is no sense to debate when the bureaucracy got the leading role... OK pals, how to proceed then? As I understand no more than one "fare use" photo per article are acceptable right? So let's have an agreement about that because I have started a work with big intentions. As far as I don't accept an article without an image.... I have years experience and I tell you almost no one reads anything with no photos being attached. So let's shake hands on uploading one non-free photo per article so that I can continue working. Moreover, if you show me some place here, I will announce my intentions of contribution for the a week or two ahead so that all the people that want to help can search the web (me too) for free images. If after a week of searching the free content isn't found then I will upload a screenshot or something like that taken by me. OK?... Tips
See my edits to your latest village articles for some tips on formatting and good article structure. I hope you're not disappointed by the rules that contributions are expected to conform to. After all, Wikipedia is a huge project, and articles have to follow some uniform style so that they look and feel as belonging to the same encyclopedia.
I believe I'm speaking for the entire project by saying that your work is greatly appreciated, so don't give up! Try to emphasize referencing in your edits, though. At the moment, most of your work lacks verifiability. I'll remind you once again to use {{cite book}}, {{cite web}} and the like and insert footnotes (бележки под линия) for every fact.
To give you an idea, here's an article by my friend User:Dahn which has no images and still looks beautiful, at least to me. Have a look at Zigu Ornea and notice the adequate number of footnotes and references, the well-organized sections and well-structured paragraphs. Pay attention to the style of writing too, in my opinion the "beauty" of an article lies in its writing, referencing and structure rather than only the pictures. Articles like this one are the standard that we should adhere to.

Thanks for support. I don't underestimate the reference section at all. I am not satisfied too. From now on I start consideration about the respectable sources. They are in such a short supply :-( But the more important thing for me is to start as more as possible articles with the quality level "Start" or "C" or even "B" (these ranks are disputable too). - Hi again, I think it's a bit late unfortunately. DYK is intended for new articles and at the moment, the oldest articles that are being reviewed are those created on 21 February, the same day Whale (film) was started. Ideally, you should nominate your article no more than a day or two after its creation. It's a bit unfair because it can be argued that you worked on the article continuously and if you had written it in userspace first, it would have counted, as, say started on 26 February.
- Also, there are quality issues. You're using way too many unfree images; I already explained why you should avoid unfree images altogether for now. While the article is relatively well referenced (good work on using a book, it's much better than online sources, but try to use {{cite book}} and the related templates from now on). Also, the two hooks that you suggested for the Main Page are not supported by enough references, which is an absolute must, and some of them are unclear. For example, "most censored" is a peacock term and "communist authorities" is ambiguous. "so popular in Bulgaria" is both peacockish and unclear, what's left for unreferenced. Finally, the article needs a thorough check for grammar and spelling and an in-depth copyedit.
- I chose Mormarevi Brothers for a DYK nomination because these bits had footnotes attached, and also because the article is well-referenced as a whole and you limited the number of images to two. Todor→Bozhinov 15:13, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
I thought so about the wording of the hooks, but I thought I should point it out anyway. Feel free to nominate your articles yourself: even if they get rejected at first, you'll learn what you have to concentrate on in order to improve them. As for the templates, it's good advice to use {{cite book}}, {{cite web}} and the similar to make your references look good and uniform. Here's an example of a filled-out {{cite book}}:
- Perry, Duncan M. (1993). Stefan Stambolov and the emergence of modern Bulgaria, 1870–1895. Duke University Press. p. 248. ISBN 9780822313137.
Which is the rendering of the following syntax:

Using featured film articles as an example is an excellent idea. Modelling your articles on Wikipedia's best content can be nothing but a good move :) As for the images, I glanced through some WP:FILM featured articles and I couldn't find one with more than two fair use screenshots + film poster. Currently, Whale (film) has three screenshots + poster. Note that, for example, screenshots from Casablanca (film) are all public domain due to the age of the film, and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope has one screenshot and two free photos taken by Wikipedians. So basically, try to limit yourself to a poster + one fair use screenshot, I think that's a good compromise and we're more or less sticking to the rules :)
Indeed, it's quite clear from your articles on Mormarevi and Whale that you're using good examples. And yes, you are succeeding, the progress you've made is astonishing! The structure of your articles is excellent (well-selected sections, perfect section and paragraph size, adequate headings), they are detailed and comprehensive. Two areas that you can further improve on are spelling/grammar and referencing. Note that featured articles about movies have around 100 footnotes and use a decent variety of reliable sources. Try to add a few references for every paragraph, if not for every sentence, and there you have a good article, or even a featured article! :)
DYK issues
Can you please have a look at the Did you know nom, a user has pointed out referencing issues that will have to be fixed if the article is to appear on the Main Page. Re: DYK
Thanks, and congrats on your first DYK with Mormarevi Brothers :) I tend to think that "father of..." hooks are only interesting if they are associated with an entire field, something major and all-encompassing in which many people work today, for example. Sure, The Three Fools are his creation and in a way he was their father, but that's not a very impressive fact. For DYK, always strive to come up with the most curious and interesting sourcable fact. It need not be the most important thing in the article or a good summary, it should be something that attracts readers. That's your chance to interest people about Bulgaria, so use it wisely.
The second hook that you're suggesting is better, but it's too long and descriptive and a bit unclear. I'm usually a bit wary of saying that someone was "first" because that's hard to back up with good sources. Try something like:
- "... that Bulgarian animator Donyo Donev used deformed speech and interjections as a soundtrack for his films?"
