Wikipedia Campus Ambassador edit

Hi there, my name is Annie Lin; I am the Campus Team Coordinator for the Wikimedia Foundation. I am emailing you because Wikimedia is launching a new project (the "Public Policy Initiative") for the 2010-2011 academic year and is currently looking for dedicated Wikipedians near the George Washington University and Georgetown University areas to serve as the project's Campus Ambassadors, and I thought you might be interested.

More details about the Wikipedia Campus Ambassador role can be found at http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Campus_Ambassador. Here is also a little bit more information; in a nutshell: The Campus Ambassadors are crucial components of the Wikipedia Public Policy Initiative. Volunteers in this role will mainly be in charge of providing face-to-face training and support for professors and students on Wikipedia-related skills, such as how to create new articles, how to add images, how the talk pages work, etc. Campus Ambassadors will also help recruit other people on campus to contribute to Wikipedia articles, for example by setting up Wikipedia-related student groups and by organizing "Welcome to Wikipedia" social events. In general they will become known as Wikipedia experts on the university campus (in your case, on the GWU or Georgetown University campus). The estimated time commitment for this role is 3-5 hours a week, possibly slightly more at the very beginning and very end of the semester. The Wikimedia Foundation will hold a mandatory three-day training for all Campus Ambassadors in August, and will continue to stay in contact with and offer full support for the Campus Ambassadors throughout the academic semester.

Issues regarding non-free files edit

Hi Sarah, I've removed the non-free files from List of public art in Indianapolis. There's a few reasons for this. First, the images were very reduced in size, making their display in the article a failure of WP:NFCC #8, significance. Further, there's a prohibition on this sort of use which can be read at WP:NFLISTS, and also WP:NFG. We don't use non-free images in this way.

Also, quite a number of the images located on this page are currently hosted on Commons. There's a serious issue with many of these images, as they are photographs of 3D works of art. There is no freedom of panorama in the United States for 3D works of art in public places. See Commons:Freedom of panorama#United_States for more information regarding this issue. As a result of this, many of those photographs are actually encumbered with copyrights, and are therefore not acceptable on Commons. I've marked quite a lot of these for deletion due to this. If you'd like to copy those images here, and use them under terms of our non-free content policy, that's fine. Just be sure to tag them with {{non-free 3D art}} and add a fair use rationale per WP:FURG. You can see what images I tagged by looking at my contributions on Commons for today, November 4.

Lastly, I removed non-free files from User:Missvain/IndybyHood. First, per the issues described above, this use wouldn't be acceptable in the main article namespace anyway, and second per terms of WP:NFCC #9, the use of non-free files in userspace is strictly prohibited.

Hello back atchya. I'm glad to here your interested in DC (I noticed that you lived there. I live a bit south myself but work in DC) Well I noticed some time ago that the project hadn't been very active and I was considering rolling it into Wikiproject United States. Basically the project pages would be the same I would just add DC as a subproject under WPUS (see how U.S. counties was just done for {{WikiProject United States}}) and then replace the DC talk banner with the WPUS one (that would cover the 5000ish articles that currently have the DC tag). I also noticed that there are on about 20000 more (depending on how you count them it could be more) that apply to DC but aren't currently tagged. As I mentioned before the project pages and talk page for the project would remain, it mostly just applies to the banner. Let me know what you think about this idea. Oh are you with the Smithsonian Glam or a different one? I was one of the folks that went out originally in June (if you saw the picture I am the guy in the back by the plant in the Maroon shirt) and talked with the museum about working together. I haven't been able to make it to another one due to my day schedule but Im hoping to make it back out there. Here is the link to the next meetup. Everyone is still pretty excited about the possibility of working with SI but some of the other collaborations with the Library of Congress and the National Institute for health are in discussions too as well as others. If you want too but you don't have too. I know you are currently building up content for the different pieces of art and Smithsonian so thats more important than spending time tagging IMO. Just FYI, I am leaving the DC tag in place for know and just adding the US tag with DC. I use a program called AWB and can do them pretty quickly (about 1000 a day lately). I was actually thinking about running a bot to do it in an automated fashion for this group because theres so many. Actually, the picture that you've posted is perfect. It shows the soldier in the architectural setting, with the name of the buildings nicely right there. I'd love to give you a copy of the book, but . ..... there are no copies. I just did a start of the year inventory of our data base and discovered:
Number of buildings: 1163
This is counting a college or university that might have multiple buildings as one number.
Number of architects bios: Counting the number of entries in the Architects category, there are: 96
Number of sculptors bios: Counting the number of entries in the Sculptors category, there are: 270
Carvers Counting the number of entries in the Carvers category, there are: 36 Some, if not most of these overlap with the "sculptors" category

Tagging edit

Just out of interest, how are you selecting the European articles that you tag for the Public Art project? It seems very random. As the active membership of the project seems almost entirely US-based, and editing on US subjects, I wonder how much the project can really do for art outside the US. Nice work tagging and assessing articles, Missvain! It would be great if Kumioko were to look at your work and check it over/make additions. I'm not often sure I understand what Johnbod is saying here, public art is public art no matter what continent it is on, or how random it may seem to him.

Like most things on Wikipedia, this project has a lot of chiefs, but not nearly enough indians for the grand scope it sets out, and "indian" levels of participation are falling, as everyone except Richard is aware. Hi John. Glad for your concern. The funny thing is that we're getting more press and more notice than ever before. I spoke at the Wikipedia 10 event in Washington recently and have been lucky to have many good people "join the cause" because of it. I also expect to spread the word in Israel later this year. I'm not sure what wrong side of the bed you woke up on, but, as a Native American Studies undergrad student with a politically correct lean I'd rather you not use lame analogies to describe a project that I am quite passionate about (and writing my thesis about). Perhaps you can continue to focus on your own work on Wikipedia and let our "dying" project struggle on. As a note, my tagging is sporadic because I do a simple search when I feel like it: "public art" in the search engine and see what it brings up. Feel free to organize it if you need to see something a little more coherent.

Despite Richard's usual attempt to dismiss my views as petulant bad temper, they are in fact based on a great deal of thought and a lot more more experience here than either of you can show. But then learning from other people does not appear to be something that interests Richard much. I'm fine with the project concentrating on its core subject, but since it has been constucted as something of a closed garden from the start, I have always been concerned when it reaches out beyond that. Personally as a rather meddlesom non member of the project I rather prefer the broad scope approach and since the project is called Public Art and not Americna Art or Public Art in American the title itslef would elude to Worldwide participation. SIART task force edit

Not sure if you knew yet but the smithsonian banner has been modifed to include the task force you asked for. It took a little longer than expected because I had to ask another user for some help but its done now. Just add |SIART=Yes and |SIART-importance=Top, High, Mid, Low or NA depending on the class. I actually removed importance levels due to conflict we were having about who is to judge what is important and what isn't? The fact that sculptures by people like Robert Indiana have been declared "Low importance" by projects like WP:United States and WP:Indiana makes no sense to us. So, we scrapped the idea. That is the way it is supposed to work - articles will always have different importance levels for specialized and more general projects, and to expect them all to be the same is the wrong approach. Well the importance criteria is subjective but differs by project and could and probably will be different even for Task forces within a project. For example:
  • The Archives of American Art article is IMO of low importance to WPUS
  • its probably of low or Mid importance to Washington DC
  • Its probably mid to high importance to the SI project
  • its probably Top importance to the Archives of American Art task force.
This is all subjective of course but I hope this gives the general idea. I personally believe that dropping the importance is the wrong approach and heres why. There are 2 general schools of thought in WP when it comes to using the importance. 1) says it gives the article an importance to its readers and 2) says that it gives the project the ability to focus on the articles that are most important to it. I prefer to think of it somewhere in the middle myself. In the case of WPUS we have about 32000 articles, Now if we dropped the importance and just went with quality we would have a huge pile of articles to cull through and decide which to work on next or which should be priority. Adding the Importance allows a lower level of granularity and allows the project to focus on the articles that are most important (Statue of Liberty, Declaration of Independance, Michael Jackson (that last was a bit of a joke but is in the top ten of most popular pages for WPUS). Although your project is much much smaller with what will probably be under 2000 articles not having the importance is going to make it difficult to decide on what articles are truly important to the project and or to the readers and therefore will make it harder to focus on those that people view and want to improve. I think this conversation would be better served to take place within the project so others might benefit from seeing it there (please feel free to copy and paste my response there; I hope the others agree to do this). Having said that, it will take considerable work to develop subjective criteria for evaluating public art in terms of importance, and I think this level of relevancy will become more evident as the project progress. While it's valid for all of the reasons discussed above, not a high priority in my book, but clearly an opportunity for others to take the lead on and develop a proposal to present to the members of the project. --RichardMcCoy (talk) 16:43, 1 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I certanly have no problem with someone copy pasting my comments here and regarding your other comment. WPUS (mostly User:North Shoreman has done a lot of the work) has been developing an importance rating for us to better gauge the importance of US related articles. It can be found here but please copy it somwhere else if you want to change it around. In general of you replace "the United States" with Art or Public Art I think wou'll be in good shape with some minor tweaking after that. West Hartlepool War Memorial (according to English Heritage and the current local authority, Hartlepool Borough Council, an unnamed 'war memorial' in an unspecified 'Victory Square') edit

The assignment of 'start class' status on its Discussion page which presumably is applicable to the entire above article, as well as or rather than to the Discussion alone, is noted (together with the comment on the meaning and requirements of the status in question in the relevant website within Wikipedia). Unfortunately I am not a 'member' of Wikipedia very much at all in the sense of collaboration, or in any other sense. Please likewise note that I only began this article in view of an inadequate if not incorrect entry under the title 'Hartlepool' which gave a heading 'History' and a reference to 'Victory Square' (that which was completely contrary to the actual state of affairs since the present state of the area as a 'square', and it never was one architecturally for various reasons, has nothing at all in common with the original intention as a memorial, with the single exception of the preservation of the original 'platform' together with its monument and one small section of the original boundary wall and railing of the 'square', which 'square' was in its original form larger). A further complication which clearly is not taken into account under the category that is now given to the present article ('start class') but which should I respectfully suggest possibly be something that must be held as relevant is that 20th Cent. war memorials relating to the 'world wars' in Europe can in certain instances, including the present one, be of a truly international character in their original form, if not as they stand at present, and that this is something that can be demonstrated, but taking into account a much wider issue than any single memorial. This arguably requires not material within Wikipedia in its present form but compliance by signatories in particular the United Kingdom with the requirements of the 1985 Granada Convention[1]. This Wikipedia cannot achieve, it is a question of the correct application of domestic legislation, and if the domestic legislation is not adequate, the addition to or modification of it in a form which will permit the enforcement of compliance with treaty obligations, if not, within the UK, equitable law. In conclusion, I thank Wikipedia for giving a chance to make this clear at least in outline, as I hope, and I also hope it may prove something taken into account as necessary if it (Wikipedia) is to retain prestige as a source of information? May I also make clear that unfortunately I am completely isolated in this project (or problem), in every sense, so far at least, and since I am not particularly competent in matters relating to improval as now apparently required, this may not happen. Anyone wishing to learn more and possibly to be of assistance may contact me by e-mail (peter.judge@laposte.net) but I do not see an easy way forward in what as I repeat and hope has been made clear enough is an extremely complicated matter from the point of view of history and architecture and also potentially including politics and national and international law. What therefore lies ahead? What will follow 'start class' as consigned? You will perhaps in the end find it both convenient and appropriate to remove this article altogether? I shall understand your reasons if you (Wikipedia) do so. I shall also expect you to take measures to ensure that no further quite evidently incorrect information on this subject matter (in addition to for instance the current description as 'Heugh Battery memorial plaque' of what is in a contemporary, 1921, public document named 'War Memorial Tablet'[2]) will, given its possible national significance, be repeated in the case of the West Hartlepool War Memorial, at least for the time being. Note on the removal: edit

I have also removed from the article File:Lift Off David Black B.JPG, File:Lift Off David Black C.JPG, and File:Lift Off David Black D.JPG. Wikipedia must use non-free files sparingly, for copyright reasons. While it is easy to justify the use of one image of the sculpture, it is very hard to justify the use of a gallery of non-free images. nah, if a single time, i wouldn't bother. however, for future reference, consider the case of Salmon1: because we had lot's of people linking, referencing their blogs, websites, promoting their gallery shows, now we have draconian rules; we don't like people using their own published books as references. (now the footnotes from their published books, ok) subject matter experts get treated like they were teen-age bloggers. for example, people removing references calling it reference spam [4].
