Last names

I noticed that in some of your edits, like this one at 2018–19 Washington State Cougars men's basketball team, you repeat a person's full name, even though they were already mentioned earlier. Per MOS:SURNAME, they can generally referred to by their last name (e.g. "Kent") without needing to repeat their full name (e.g. "Ernie Kent") again. patronymic vs surname

Hi, Medmura! In the article Asha Rangappa, the article subject's last name is not a surname, it's a patronymic; she is referred to correctly by her first name. I know that sounds weird, which is why there's a note at the top of her article.

Tua

Do you have a source for the difference in pronunciation for Tua's name? Otherwise, you can't just keep reverting me without explanation or sources. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:44, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

That "o" is an unstressed syllable when pronounced. Search for his name on YouTube and listen carefully to how his name is pronounced in videos. Do you hear a diphthongized /oʊ/ vowel sound, like the "ow" sound in "grow?" No. You hear a short, unstressed sound--an /ə/ sound, like the "a" in "formula." Just because it's written as an "o" doesn't mean it's pronounced as one. I've studied phonetics and phonology and I know how to represent the pronunciations of words properly. Don’t see why that matters, but hey, if you want to get really pedantic about it, in Samoan, you don’t say the “g” sound either, just the nasal before it. Is it also wrong to say “Los Angeles” is pronounced /lɒs ˈændʒəlɪs/? Medmura (talk) 01:24, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Not quite. He’s using the Samoan pronunciation, /taŋovaɪloa/, without a [g] sound or a diphthongized o. Medmura (talk) 14:59, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
