WikiCup 2014: The results

The 2014 WikiCup champion is Godot13 (submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.

2014 Badaun gang rape

Pappu Yadav et al have not been accused in a court of law. They are not suspect any more (regardless of the personal feelings of some wikipedia editors). Early in the investigations, it was suspected that the girl's parents were covering up some facts and that Pappu Yadav and others were falsely accused, and the CBI has concluded that they had nothing to with the hangings. He was indeed having an affair with the older girl, but that is not a crime. CBI is the highest authority that has considered the case, and they have reached a conclusion. @Malaiya: I have no interest in the case. I was just correcting the sentence about them being found innocent, as that was not reflected in the source. WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

• We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
• In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
• The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

• Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Bumblebee, a level-4 vital article, to Good Article;
• AHeneen (submissions) worked-up the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 article, also to Good Article status;
• Rodw (submissions) developed an extremely timely article to Good Article, taking Magna Carta there some 800 years after it was first sealed;
• And last but not least, Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points) worked up a number of Featured Pictures during round 1, including the 1948 one Deutsche Mark (pictured right), receiving the maximum bonus due to the number of Wikis that the related article appears in.

You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!

Replying from talk gamergate

I wanted to reply to this [1], and I figured it was more appropriate here than on the article's talk page.

First, I agree that the idea is absurd. But I've seen it happen, and many times. I've never been so blown away before. But it definitely makes it hard to relay that feeling to others.

Second, regarding the failed campaign, the number of revised ethics policies for gaming journalism publications would seem paint a different picture. Of course there are no articles linking the two. It's all just circumstantial. But that begs the question, what would it take for the ethics campaign to be considered a success? What criteria would it have to meet?

I know this topic has the tendency to breed contention, so I won't feel offended if you'd rather not engage me in this discussion. TyTyMang (talk) 09:00, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

@TyTyMang: If Gamergate is about ethics in video game journalism, why is the vast majority of Gamegate attention directed towards female game developers rather than video game journalists?[2] Kaldari (talk) 18:07, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

I'm not going to claim that Gamergate is only about ethics in video game journalism. Though it is definitely a primary focus. And I'm not going to claim harassment hasn't been done in the name of Gamergate. But that is definitely not what it is about. And the definition of harassment seems to differ from person to person nowadays so it's impossible to make objective statements to it's prevalence or occurrence.

As for that article you linked, the writer very much misrepresents the data with his conclusion. There's lots of things to note here.

• First, these are #gamergate tweets directed at detractors of Gamergate. Which likely has more negative sentiment than the full spectrum of the hashtag.
• Second, as stated in the article, the majority of the tweets are neutral. And judging by the graph provided, it appears the negative tweets only make up between 4% and 8% of tweets.
• Third, the writer states tweets to Totilo and Grayson were more negative than tweets to Quinn, Wu or Sarkeesian, but Quinn, Wu and Sarkeesian recieved these less negative tweets in greater quantity.

So his conclusion is the comparison between the small percentage of negative tweets directed at these individuals reveals they spend more time tweeting negatively at developers than journalists. Which is sound deductive reasoning. But then tries to induce that this small, very specific sample paints the entire picture of all of Gamergate. This isn't taking into account the content of the tweets. This isn't taking into account tweets that are not directed at individuals. This isn't taking into account the neutral or positive tweets. This is a very narrow selection, of a very narrow selection of data. Based on the data, it appears they spend vastly more time tweeting not-negatively than they do negatively.

Also, the initial ethics concern is about the collusion between journalists and game developers.

I wonder how the data would look for MRA and Feminist tweets at each other's notable individuals. TyTyMang (talk) 06:43, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Recent changes

• MediaWiki can now hide the signature button when you edit a content page. [13]
• The "Your preferences have been saved" message has changed. You can now see more easily what was saved when you change preferences several times. [14]
• You can now play Ogg video files in some browsers that don't support this format. This solution uses JavaScript and works on desktop browsers only for now. It will work on mobile later. [15]
• You can now use the same tools to edit style in VisualEditor on mobile as in desktop browsers. [16]
• It is now easier to see if there is a JavaScript error in a user or site script. [17]
• JavaScript authors:
  • You can no longer use the Sajax library. You can see a list of pages to fix. [18] [19]

HotArticlesBot MaxArticles 3000?

I was wondering why this limit is set? It seems to preclude the use of the bot even for comparatively small WPs such as WP:CRO that I just nominated. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 14:54, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

@Joy: The max is only because the database queries for large article sets can be expensive (i.e. can tie up the database for a while). The bot has been disabled in the past for hogging database resources, so I decided it would be better to set a maximum size. The code for the bot was recently improved to be more efficient, however, so I think I'll change the max from 3000 to 10,000 as an experiment. If 10,000 work OK, I'll try increasing it further. I had a quick look at the code, and when I overcame my dismay at the lack of standard SQL formatting :) I figured that since the limit was imposed on the number of articles in the category, the bottleneck would be in the subquery that extracts data from categorylinks/page tables, right? I noticed that you are retrieving a list of thousands of page_id integers as well as page_title strings there, most of which you're later discarding. Maybe you could speed that up somewhat by having the subquery return only the list of page_id's, and drop the page_title's from there, and then at the end, when you finally reduce the list according to data from recentchanges and $limit, do another query into the page table to resolve just a few page_ids into a few page_titles. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 21:20, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Folger image upload?

Hi Kaldari,

After an extended wikibreak I've recently returned and saw in the Shakespeare project talk archives a notice from 2012 that the Folger needed help uploading their collection, and suggested contacting you. Do you have any more information about this? Has the uploads been completed? If not, what needs doing? Is anyone working on it? The Folger collections are a gold mine for the Shakespeare project, so this news (albeit somewhat old, sorry) makes me very excited! --Xover (talk) 17:39, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

Couldn't you tolerate a slightly larger map since it gets fuzzy when compressed so small, and readers need to easily locate and refer to it throughout the long article: it really is central to the whole.jzsj 22:10, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

Help please.

I've placed this section on my own talk page but I don't know who would check there to answer it.

Please help me with some of these directives in Commons OTRS:

In uploading a photo for which another is sending in the permission slip, where do I put the tag subst:OP?

Do I understand that the owner does not send to OTRS but simply to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org?

If the photo was previously deleted for lack of proper tag then does the copyright owner add the OTRS to this address? Does this vary with the time since deletion, and how does one determine what procedure to follow? If I cannot locate the correspondence number can you locate the deleted photo by the file name? If it's been some time should I just upload it like a new file?

Is the full header something like File:xxx.png, or what is it? How does this differ from the link to the image in commons?

Where do I place the previously exchanged correspondence when uploading the photo, and is this required? What if the correspondence was by phone?

I assume that if the copyright form is properly filled out that the author does include the image information on the origin of it (source) and authorized by the copyright license (which should be in the email), or is this something else?

Do you ever prefer to upload the photos yourself since they are attached to the permissions slip?

If I have uploaded an original photo and then improved on it, can I request the original be removed and links transferred to the improved version, or do you prefer I just leave both in Wiki Commons?

Moving Module:Citation/CS1

Hello Kaldari. You requested a move of this file at Module talk:Citation/CS1/Archive 12#Requested move 9 September 2015. Since seven days have run, an admin could decide to close the discussion and perform the move. But there is a scary-looking warning at Module:Citation/CS1 that this module is used in 2.6 million articles. Do you work on modules?
