eye strain wiki page

Hello doc. There has recently been some edits and removal of content from the "Eye Strain" wiki page that I request you to review. I added "sleep, rest and nutrition" as the treatment for fatigue related eye strain, but it is being repeatedly removed for lack of citations and even the citations I mention are being rejected. On the other hand, a lot of content already present on the page is cited from blogs of clinics which according to Wikipedia's guidelines, should not be allowed. As per my understanding, a citation is required only when stating a medical fact that needs an expert to research a hypothesis and get it peer reviewed to prove it as a fact. But for something that is common knowledge: like muscle fatigue being relieved by rest and sleep, Wikipedia's guidelines do state that such commonsense exceptions are allowed. The reason being, that anyone with fatigued eye muscles just needs to close their eyes or sleep to relieve the fatigue, hence validating it without ambiguity. There's no need for a researcher to prove this (also probably the lack of research in this area for something so obvious). I'm aware that conditions like myasthenia gravis are different, but as long as I mention that it is for everyday eye muscle fatigue, shouldnt it suffice? If citations are really necessary, could you help with citations from medical textbooks? And could the citations from the clinic blogs be removed from the wiki page? Many of those are usually written by non-medical outsourced writers. Navinwiki (talk) 07:47, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:40, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

I should have said this several days ago, sorry. As you said to me not too long ago, WP can be a tough place, but that does not in any way take away from the good work that you have done. And you, James, have done more for the improvement of this project than have thousands of others combined. By all means, take as much time away as you want, but please know that you are missed and that you will be welcomed back when you are ready. --Tryptofish (talk) 22:33, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
I echo what Tryptofish said.--Literaturegeek | T@1k? 02:19, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

Comment. As more time goes by I fear that it is becoming increasingly likely that we may well have lost Doc James forever, and indeed CFCF too. All because a very small number of editors became overly fixated on minor negative or controversial issues like his spelling, drug prices, videos etc., made it personal and then made it a goal to hound him off the encyclopaedia, and because of the arbitration committee which refuses, since it’s existence, to pass remedies that resolve civil bludgeoning (stealth bullying/harassment) behaviour. Perhaps if I had tried harder to defend Doc James and CFCF more (e.g., by examining in more detail and searching for ‘recent actionable‘ diffs or given more examples of bludgeoning etc.) then maybe ArbCom could have passed a more fair set of remedies and then I could have prevented all of this, but I just assumed ArbCom would be more fair. Let’s remember the amazing work Doc James has done for the literally many hundreds of thousands or perhaps even millions of people whose lives have been improved or even saved by the high quality medical knowledge he has spread around the world, via Wikipedia.--Literaturegeek | T@1k? 17:58, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

Agrees with many of what you said. I must say that I remember someone once left a message on User:Jimbo Wales's talk page to suggest taking a precaution. It is a pity that ...... Anyway, let's be optimistic and look forward together. I stand with Doc James.--Deep humility (talk) 20:06, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
I've been in contact with him via email. I won't comment on what we discussed, but I will state that losing Doc would be a devastating loss. He contributes to and maintains so many medical articles. He is without a doubt our most prolific medical editor, and articles suffer in his absence. I've been wondering if I should let WP:Med know that he hasn't been around and some of us might therefore want to consider picking up the slack at articles he monitored.
Pinging Alexbrn, Tom (LT) and Adrian J. Hunter so that they are aware of Doc's absence if they aren't already.
CFCF has taken long breaks before, but this is concerning. Flyer22 Frozen (talk) 03:12, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
That's no good! However I also echo PaleoNeonate. Sometimes Wikibreaks can be great refreshers and help one work out whether and what is really the enjoyable parts about Wikipedia. I hope Doc James comes back refreshed. I've had more interactions with CFCF and will post on his talk page too. --Tom (LT) (talk) 07:09, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Flyer. Hopefully Doc is enjoying a well-earned break and will be back when he's ready. No doubt the case was exhausting, but Doc wasn't admonished or anything like that, and is still an admin, so clearly he still has the trust of the community. I second the last sentence by Literaturegeek above. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 05:26, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Tides Advocacy

Hi James,

Could you provide some additional info on why such a staggering sum was donated to Tides Advocacy with so little notice, board resolution, community awareness and other information on the fundraising side?

The FAQ at [2] provides almost no information as to exact use, why we're donating sums like this when other donating causes have generally been declined, and why so little notice was given for a sum that would otherwise fill 1/11th of the Endowment. Nosebagbear (talk) 14:41, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Is this sort of referring to external sources acceptable?

In this section, a certain editor has referred the reader to graphics contained in a research paper. I have never seen this format before in a Wikipedia article. While it may be a convenience for the reader, the fact that this is new to me and the editor in question is controversial have led me to wonder if this violates no external links. Your feedback is appreciated. PS: I appreciate that my inquiry may be somewhat ill-timed.--Quisqualis (talk) 17:56, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Intracranial bleed vs stroke in article on intracerebral hemorrhage

Dear Doc James (Dr Heilman), Although you are right in your change on 23:08, 22 May 2020 to the article on intracerebral hemorrhage that the authors of the reference twice referred to "intracranial bleed[ing]", it is not part of any definition they gave of intracerebral hemorrhage, which to them and their readers would have been self-evident. In fact, the authors first distinguished intracerebral hemorrhage from ischemic stroke and only then from "aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage". To remedy this, I've tried to provide a definition, provided a citation to a source written for non-specialists, and added a sentence distinguing ICH from general intracranial bleeding and from from inchemic stroke. I hope this has rectified the problem I originally identified that making a link to "intracranial bleed" takes the reader nowhere. There is no Wikipedia article with that title. I regret that I do not have the time or expertise to write such an article. I would be grateful if you could take a look at the new version and make whatever improvements that will help ordinary readers understand what ICH is, especially those consulting the article after learning that a relative has been diagnosed with an intracerebral hemorrhage. Possible copypaste violation/Anaplastic oligodendroglioma

On page Anaplastic oligodendroglioma the User: John Maynard Friedman has written: "The article was flagged as a possible copyright violation. It is not acceptable merely to remove the warning without a credible reason. (The reason given in the edit note is just childish). If (as seems likely) http://www.research-journal.net/en/Oligodendroglioma-Conclusions-from-a-clinical-series-of-90-operated-cases.html was used as a source, then (a) that source must be acknowledged in the reference and (b) it must be properly wp:paraphrased and (c) given that the issue has been flagged, a note should be made at this talk page to record the actions that have been taken in response to the flag." AND THIS "This article or section may have been copied and pasted from another location, possibly in violation of Wikipedia's copyright policy. Please review http://www.research-journal.net/en/Oligodendroglioma-Conclusions-from-a-clinical-series-of-90-operated-cases.html (DupDet · CopyVios) and remedy this by editing this article to remove any non-free copyrighted content and attributing free content correctly, or flagging the content for deletion. Please be sure that the supposed source of the copyright violation is not itself a Wikipedia mirror." Can User:DocJames help to find a good solution to cancel the bad sentences from User: John Maynard Friedman?? Wname1 (talk) 17:17, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

Doc James does not run interference on serious violations of Wikipedia policy. I am the person who noticed and first reported the plagiarism and copyright violation. Material in violation of copyright will be removed if nobody chooses to paraphrase it. Anyone can write the paraphrase, but it's incumbent on article authors not to copy-paste from sources in the first place.
My condolences on your diagnosis, Wname1, but it doesn't excuse exposing Wikipedia to copyright lawsuits. What you call "bad sentences" are very serious allegations.--Quisqualis (talk) 19:39, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello Doc James. I came across what may be vandalism on the Douglas Haldane page. Haldane was a medic all his life but an errant editor has added two Social Work categories to the page using HotCat.
