OK. What if I were to propose that the topic ban be sharpened up to say "political and historical topics"? Would you care for that or are you only interested in those areas? To what end Drmies? As long as decision about my ban is made based only or predominantly on personal opinion of small group of involved editors, I think that both of us know what will inevitably happen as soon as I apply complete ban. The scope of the ban does not resolve the real issue here. Nevertheless, thank you for your proposal. I respected the ban for more than a year during which nobody complained I repeated the same behavior. That was enough for uninvolved editors who participated in the discussion and all !voted for unban. That is what only matters in ban appeals posted more than a year after ban was imposed. That is wrong way to resolve lack of uninvolved input issue. That is not how wikipedia works. It is not battlefield. It is not me and my friends against my opponents Drmies. The purpose of noticeboards is to get uninvolved and neutral additional opinions. Not POV railroading. Consensus among a limited group of involved editors based on their personal opinion about one editor ≠ community consensus. If decision about my ban/unban can be predominantly based on personal opinion of editors who banned me I don't want to be unbanned. • It is a way, a very pragmatic way. As you've seen, it's often a matter of who shows up. The way to get more people to show up is to get more people to show up; uninvolved editors who don't know you from Adam have little reason to read up and participate. It's not "the community" that shows up--it's those who are involved, those who know the involved parties. Every administrator who wants to close the discussion about my ban has to read up the discussion and to evaluate presented arguments grounded in wikipedia policies. No. They showed how carefully they read up the discussion by insisting that I should present a plan how will I avoid edit warring. Should I say that "our community isn't working properly" and peform self-flagellation because of that? No. What was the evidence presented when you told one editor to zip up and present an argument? Link to three years old discussion. I am sure that you know what Wikipedia:No personal attacks policy says about "accusations about personal behavior that lack evidence. Evidence often takes the form of diffs and links presented on wiki." Did you sanction them for peronal attack on their opponent? No. Are speculations about my ethnicity an argument? No. Did they do it? Yes. Did they speculate if I am stupid, dubm and merely sentient being? Yes. Did you sanction them? WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

1. Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
2. Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
3. Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
4. Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
5. West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
6. Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
7. Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
8. Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

Article upgrade assistance request (Pre-translation stage)

This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.

Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.

While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.

Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.

do you have any idea from which sources the following allegations might be derived?

• Fine, Late Medieval Balkans, p. 357: "On Lake Ohrid a Serb named Mladen, granted the title caesar by Dušan".
• Melanges Georges Ostrogorsky. Naučno delo. 1991. p. 127: "... кесара BojnxHy, Радохну и Вука БранковиЬа" (cited in Nikola Radonja).

I don't find any confirmation of Mladen, Radonja and Vuk as caesars in Божидар Ферјанчић: Севастократори и кесари у Српском царству. In: Зборник Филозофског факултета X-1, 1970, S. 255–269.

WikiCup 2015: The results

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

A full list of our award winners are:

• Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points) wins the prize for first place and the FP prize for 330 featured pictures in the final round.
• Cwmhiraeth (submissions) wins the prize for second place and the DYK prize for 160 did you knows in the final round (310 in all rounds).
• Cas Liber (submissions) wins the prize for third place and the FA prize for 26 featured articles in all rounds.
• West Virginian (submissions) wins the prize for fourth place
• Calvin999 (submissions) wins a final 8 prize.
• Rationalobserver (submissions) wins a final 8 prize.
• Harrias (submissions) wins a final 8 prize and the FL prize for 11 featured lists.
• Rodw (submissions) wins the most prizes: a final 8 prize, the GA prize for 41 good articles, and the topic prize for a 13-article good topic and an 8-article featured topic, both in round 3.

Old Serbian printing houses

Very good work creating the articles on Old Serbian printing houses. I would suggest that you create Old Serbian printing houses, listing the printing houses and their notable works, as well as noting their connection to eachother, and legacy. Thanks Zoupan. The subject is very important and complex while my initial knowledge about it was modest when I first started to write about it. Therefore I had a plan to:

1. learn about the subject trough creating of individual related articles and a template with links to them
2. create one summary article, i.e. Early Serbian language printing.

I more or less completed first step and created many individual articles and one simple template (Template:Printed srbulje) and prepared a draft of a more complex template (link). Then I realised that early Serbian language printing also includes protestant religious books and related printing houses (i.e. one established within South Slavic Bible Institute) so I created another draft below (see above link). I did not advance much further because it is very complex subject and I did not have much of a free time lately to edit wikipedia. Any help is of course appreciated.

One remark: I think that a title such as Early Serbian language printing would be more appropriate, because it is the language which is necessarily Serbian, not the house, country or the printer.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 10:56, 10 December 2015 (UTC)

There is one problem though, the problematics of Serbian language. Protestant and Catholic-based works would be considered non-Serbian, and rather, Serbo-Croatian. An article name such as Old Serbian printing houses would include the printing houses which are regarded part of the Serbian literary corpus, and not strictly language (of which there are differing modern views of). For instance, in English-language sources, Narodna biblioteka Srbije: The monastery was the source of the idea of establishing Serbian printing houses, Ivić, The history of Serbian culture: At the same time, another important branch of Serbian printing was founded, Lunt & Weintraub: Conditions in the Serbian lands were extremely difficult, and in the next century most of their printing was done in Venice, etc. they point to a national-cultural definition rather than linguistical. --Zoupan 11:18, 10 December 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Zoupan. There are different modern views not only regarding linguistic but also (maybe even more) regarding the "national-cultural definition". I think it is probably easier to find reliable sources for language than for the "national-cultural definition", especially in the period in question. WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.
