Speedy deletion of The Haggis Horns

edit

A tag has been placed on The Haggis Horns requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Tavix (talk) 00:06, 30 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Yndajas,

Thank you for raising the issue that you did on WT:MOS and for reminding those of us who are editors of the enormous responsibility we have. -- Marie Paradox (talk | contribs) 03:34, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Marie - is it something you'd like to weigh in on? There doesn't seem to be much support for addressing the issue of deadnaming on that talk page. Yndajas (talk) 03:44, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
You are welcome.
The short answer to your question is that, yes, I would like to weigh in. The long answer is that I am not sure how to do so effectively. At the moment it seems that the people at WT:MOS feel that this is a matter better discussed at WT:BLP. I am already following WT:BLP, so I can watch the discussion and weigh in if I feel I have something to contribute. But you might first want to take a look at Policies and guidelines and How to contribute to Wikipedia guidance to get an idea of how policies and guidelines are created and changed.
You are right in saying that a trans person's name refers to them at all previous moments in their life, and you are right in saying that calling trans people by their previous names is harmful. But having seen how long it took MOS:IDENTITY to become policy, I do not believe this is something that can be changed overnight. -- Marie Paradox (talk | contribs) 04:28, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

BLP

edit

Seriously, it's a WT:BLP or WT:V or WP:VPPOL matter. Continuing the thread at WT:MOS will do nothing useful. We are not going to change what MoS says about this unless the sourcing policies change to permit us to alter a historical name to a new one despite it not appearing in the sources cited. This is not a new idea. There was half a year of argumentation about this a WP:VPPOL:

The MoS material has been pushed into the shape it is in through exhausting levels of community discussion and re-discussion and re-re-discussion. Any further change to how we deal with TG subjects can only be done at the policy level, not in the MoS guideline. To be frank, the odds of it happening are about 1%. If you actually read though all those discussions, you'll see why: virtually no one supports the idea of retroactively changing names that did not apply at the time of the event being sourced and that do not match what the sources say. I.e., it is never going happen that our article Athletics at the 1976 Summer Olympics will contain the name Kaitlyn Jenner as the winner of a men's decathlon gold medal.

The change you want to see has already been rejected by a very broad consensus, three times in a row. But you can try. WT:MOS just isn't the place for it.

I would advise, however, that if you make an attempt at this that you avoid getting into antagonistic bickering matches and straw manning those who disagree with you. I do not believe for even half a second: a) that you are unaware that not everyone agrees with an extended definition of "violence" that includes mere words; b) that you are incapable of understanding that disagreeing with that definition doesn't equate to disagreeing that mental health issues are important; or c) that you are unaware that mischaracterizing people as dismissive of mental health concerns because they don't agree with an expanded definition of "violent" is dishonest, disruptive, and likely to result in a block or a topic ban if it persists.

Acceptance goes both ways. There's not a single person in any of these discussions who has demonized trans people, and you have to stop demonizing people who don't agree with your language usage or (more to the point) your desire to police theirs. It just will not end well.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  03:53, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure how I can be seen to have demonised people, and I haven't said anyone in the thread I started demonised trans people (only someone in another thread, with good reason), just that the lines that are being taken (and some policy or interpretations of policy) are not good enough for respecting and safeguarding many trans people. I've simply met heavy resistance with explanations/counter-arguments informed by my deeply-embedded position within trans communities. Further, if someone is questioning a word used in a quote I provided, surely I have a right to justify the use of that word? I know "they started it" isn't a mature excuse for behaviours, but I was literally explaining the reasoning behind a quite widely-used contemporary definition of "violence". I understand not everyone likes that definition, but do I not have a right to justify/explain my and other people's perspective without being deemed antagonistic? I was told it was trivialising to include attacks on mental health under the scope of violence (which was the basis of what you have deemed to be a straw man), and here you dismiss such attacks as "mere words" - words are powerful things, and words can change (including end) people's lives. If it isn't dismissive of mental health to say actions that can affect mental health couldn't possibly be on a par with any level of physical violence, then I don't know what is. It came across to me as a kind of "sticks and stone may break my bones but words will never hurt me" viewpoint, and that needs to be challenged. I don't see how it's antagonistic, controversial or worthy of a ban to make the claims that mental health can be just as important at physical.
I understand Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style may not be the best place to discuss this, but this was where I was directed by the editor who revoked the original change and it is where I was met with heavy resistance. If the responses had simply redirected me without weighing in, I would've shifted the conversation elsewhere and wouldn't have needed to address the issues raised. You can call it bickering if you like, but I maintain that I was fairly consistently sticking to reasonable argumentation/explanation. I haven't demonised anyone - taking issue with people's arguments/logic/judgement is not demonisation. Offering reasons for disagreement - especially on matters that affect you and those around you in a deeply personal way - is surely a reasonable act? Offering well-reasoned response is what I continue to be drawn into doing here, it appears. Yndajas (talk) 13:17, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have recently shown interest in the English Wikipedia Manual of Style and article titles policy. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect: any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or any page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

As I mentioned, discretionary sanctions rules apply; labeling people "transphobic" [2] because they disagree with you already puts you within the ambit of those sanctions. Please stop.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  04:08, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

And this is not what I've done in the slightest. I called out transphobia in an old thread where someone was characterising trans people as delusional, amongst other claims. Yndajas (talk) 13:20, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
