Isn't there a hairstyle called a 'princeton' as well? Nagelfar 03:03, 8 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

And I know people may read this and think I'm refering to the "prince valiant", but I'm sure there is one called a "princeton" which is different: short fade on the sides & back, long on top, usually stylized back with a wave of some sort, not to the point of a bouffant or pompadour, but relatively long. It was common in the German military during WWII. I'm sure there may be a separate German name for it too. Nagelfar 12:44, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

PrincetonPrinceton (disambiguation) – Princeton usually refers to Princeton University. It can be assumed that Princeton usually means Princeton University besides some minor occurrences. Therefore, I added a redirect to Princeton University and believe a disambiguation page is necessary. Ziggy7th (talk) 14:34, 16 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 15:43, 16 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Support, per WP:PRIMARYUSAGE. By far the most common usage of "Princeton" is to refer to the university. A good model for this is Stanford, which redirects to Stanford University, while the dab page includes an entry for Stanford, California. Consider this statement: "My father went to Princeton." The ordinary understanding is that the speaker's father attended the university, unless some additional context existed to suggest a recent trip to the town. What if the speaker said "My father lives in Princeton" instead? Station1 (talk) 06:53, 18 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Unambiguous, because one doesn't live in a university. That example can only be the town. "Went to" could have been either. Lwarrenwiki (talk) 07:21, 18 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
That's a good point. Station1 (talk) 08:31, 18 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. Clear WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT. Dohn joe (talk) 18:51, 18 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Redirect to Princeton University, as noted its obvious that the name includes "University" and I suspect few will search looking only for it, rather than the general area. I might support a redirect to the NJ municipality per WP:DABCONCEPT since it includes the uni but considering how many other uses there are it might be best to keep as it. Views [[1]] show that the uni only gets around 6x the views of the municipality. There are a lot of other entries on the DAB that I didn't include. If we decide to make the municipality primary then I'd take into account the primacy for the uni. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:56, 18 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Crouch, Swale: bit confused by your 1st sentence. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 17:01, 19 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Shhhnotsoloud: I was saying that I oppose to making "Princeton" a redirect to Princeton University but might support making "Princeton" a redirect to Princeton, New Jersey. Kansas City was redirected to the general area per WP:DABCONCEPT, although it is not analog to this, the principal is that the uni is in the municipality. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:06, 19 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Understood, thanks. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 11:36, 20 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Support moving the disambiguation page from Princeton to Princeton (disambiguation), and redirecting Princeton to Princeton University as primary topic. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 17:01, 19 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. Clear primary redirect. -- Necrothesp (talk) 16:28, 20 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Support "Princeton" used by itself, without modification, most commonly refers to the university: The other schools are less likely to be called simply "Princeton" by reliable sources (unless it has already been established the writer is referring to say, Princeton Junior School), and the locations are more likely than the university to be accompanied by descriptors (e.g. state). See also Harvard. --Animalparty! (talk) 02:03, 22 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. The university is the clear primary topic. Calidum 14:26, 22 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
