Bad article

What there is to this article is no worse in terms of bias than any other band's "Style" section. Someone needs to add more sections, however, comprising more factual information. This band is definitely a viable candidate for an article -- they are still together and making albums, and the band is made up of members of other previously existing bands. This article uses very biased language. Additionally, where did all the information come from? The one source, http://www.azcentral.com/ent/music/articles/0724portugal0724-ON.html, only has some of the information currently in the article. Where did all the rest come from? Whoever is responsible for the current content needs to provide some sources. Furthermore, the Band Name section's first few sentences are very un-encyclopedic in nature and are altogether much too informal. This quote I particularly think is unfit for this article: "What is Portugal. The Man? Portugal is a country, not a man. Can a country consider itself a man? Reverts to the "review"

Touring Members = Wrong

I've heard that the drummer Jason Sechrist was recently dismissed from the band because he needed to deal with a family emergency. Is there any documentation backing this up? Switchbladesista (talk) 17:52, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Seriously terrible article. For instance; no matter in what context, NEVER state: "Similar to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd ". It's just wrong. Furthermore, " but Portugal also adds live jams at the end of certain songs to create a stream-of-consciousness flow between songs. It would be interesting to know about the artwork on all their records. I've heard it's the singer that creates the images and then they have a Portland, Oregon based designer put it all together. Genre

I would like to take out, in the genre section, that there earlier work is "post-hardcore" when there is absolutely no influence of post-hardcore in any of their work. Genres

What happened to the genres section? PTM are by no means "Art Rock" or "Glam Rock". I edited it down to Indie Rock, Psychedelic Rock and Progressive Rock, if anyone feels any others should be added/removed I think it should be discussed here. --Pritoolmachine2806 (talk) 15:50, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

Neutralizing article

I've removed one excessively favorable (and unsourced) paragraph in the intro and added some citation-needed tags to another later section to try to start the process of making this entry more neutral. It has to do with Portugal being a country, and countries personify a group of people as one. By naming it Portugal. The Man, it personifies the whole band as one man. I read it in an interview, but I don't know where it is. 50.141.151.74 (talk) 00:43, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Plagiarism

Under the section "Atlantic Years" the last paragraph mentioning the new project that the band was just apart of is completely plagiarized from the Rolling Stone article. Unstylize

Also, the article indicates that "Portugal" and "The Man" are meant to be separate words, so moving this would make the title incorrect (and I'm not seeing how it's not "standard English grammar" in that case). The period is just stylization. There are independent sources[4][5][6][7] spelling it "Portugal the Man", showing it's not an invented style. It's not correct to have a period in the middle of a proper noun. Fun. also has a period but consensus concluded it was merely stylization and had to be removed. Same thing for Damn.. "Portugal" and "The Man" not meant to be two separate words, John (from the band) implied "the man" is used as a descriptor of "Portugal" like in the sense that "Portugal is the Man". — Zawl 08:40, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

There are some stray sources that say "Portugal the Man", but it looks like it's easily the least common spelling of the band's name. Even "Portugal. the Man" seems like it's more common, despite probably making the least amount of sense. Reading over MOS:TM again this RM has still not addressed "Avoid using special characters that are not pronounced, are included purely for decoration, or simply substitute for English words or letters (e.g., "♥" used for "love", "!" used for "i") or for normal punctuation, unless a significant majority of reliable sources that are independent of the subject consistently include the special character in the subject's name." Too long, & "inside" trivia

Way too much "so-what" ya-kitty-yak trivia, for example this:

"On February 8, 2013, Portugal. The Man leaked pictures on Bonnaroo's official Tumblr page which showed that celebrated producer Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse, was producing the band's new record. According to a Q&A Zach did on Portugal. The Man's official Tumblr page, their new album was influenced by Pink Floyd and The Dark Side of the Moon.[36]"

Stuff like that should be massively trimmed, deleted (or explained). The article reads like a fanboy tabloid magazine. (And I normally disparage Wiki censor's dry & dusty definition of "encyclopedic.")

Timeline

Mary Peltola
