Untitled edit

It should be noted that this song has an anti-american sentiment. This fact is often unrecognized and, ironically, the song is often used in american media in a patriotic manner. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.92.161.189 (talkcontribs) 03:14, 15 May 2006

This is already mentioned in the article about the song: American Woman (song)

did Jimi Hendrix ever sing or record American Woman on a video? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 164.58.185.140 (talk) 21:40, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

He died a few months after it was released. I suppose it's possible, though. You're probably thinking of Lenny Kravitz, who did a remake of it around 1998 or 1999. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.148.222.114 (talkcontribs) 12:59, 27 October 2009

Digging for gold edit

I've heard it said this was the band's 1st gold album. True? TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 04:02, 26 March 2011 (UTC) (P.S. I've also heard it said "American Woman" was less anti-American than pro-Canadian...)Reply

Requested move 16 December 2015 edit

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

Album moved to American Woman (album); song moved to American Woman. There is unanimous support for a move of the album. With respect to the base page name, the primacy of the song is asserted by Insertcleverphrasehere, Cuchullain, and 70.51.44.60 (note: IP votes may be discounted in discussions, but in this case 70.51.44.60 is a static IP with several months of good edits); the absence of a primary topic (requiring disambiguation) is asserted by In ictu oculi, BrownHairedGirl, and Dispenser; the nominator, BDD, initially proposed to disambiguate the base page name, but has indicated that he would also support the primacy of the song. However, of those participating in the discussion, only Cuchullain has offered evidence in support of their position. Because the song and the album are related topics, the level of ambiguity between them is low; each necessarily mentions the other, and a reader would not be shocked to discover either at the primary topic title. As also noted by Cuchullain, certain topics previously on the disambiguation page were inappropriate for inclusion there, leaving one other topic, a comparatively obscure novel. In conclusion, with unanimous support for a page move, and a split of support for the use of the base page name, the move should be consistent with the sole evidence provided. bd2412 T 17:32, 27 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

– I don't think the album is WP:PRIMARYTOPIC here. It definitely seems to be one of those cases where the song is more notable than the album itself (I didn't know it was from an album of the same name). --BDD (talk) 14:56, 16 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

See WP:MALPLACED. If a base term is ambiguous (in this case, "American Woman"), the disambiguation page should be located at that title. As for redirecting it to the song, that would essentially be naming the song the primary topic, and it would render the "(song)" unnecessary disambiguation. --BDD (talk) 21:47, 16 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
I actually came across this from an RfD for "American women". It's still active—see Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2015 December 16. There's probably no need to establish the variant capitalization, but if we do, it should probably go wherever the existing redirect does (currently the album, oddly enough). --BDD (talk) 17:26, 21 December 2015 (UTC) Update: With the RfD closed, American women now redirects to United States women. --BDD (talk) 17:04, 23 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Support; move the song to American Woman. The song got 17,785 views in the last 90 days, compared to only 7884 for the album, despite the album being at the base name. There's only one other real topic of this name, American Woman (novel), which received 196 views in the same period. I removed two entries from the dab page, as the Butthole Surfers song is actually a cover of the Guess Who song, and I found no mention of the other one anywhere. In other words, the song receives more than 2x the page views of all other uses combined, even with the album being at American Woman.--Cúchullain t/c 16:19, 23 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
I would support this also. (And it looks like there's agreement on moving the album article either way.) --BDD (talk) 16:22, 23 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Support this isn't the primary topic, the song is more notable -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 10:23, 27 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
