Academic qualifications

edit

Is he a BBA or an MBA? According to The Statesman, he is an MBA. According to The Telegraph and The Tribune, he is a BBA. His young age suggests that he is a BBA, not an MBA. Also which specific school of the University of Colorado did he attend? That information has to be updated on the list of alumni page of that university as well.

The article says "Bindra scored his highest of the finals - 10.8 (A Bullseye)" . As per 10 m Air Rifle, the maximum score is 10.9. Can someone explain this. If not, I'll wait for a day and remove the "bullseye". Tintin 14:24, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Abhinav Bindra - NOT a Sikh

edit
  • With respect wikipeadia is neutral and non-judgemental on such issues. The facts should be stated and the reader left to make up their own conclusions. Whether you think he is a good Sikh or not is not an issue to a neutral encyclopaedia. msp4realmf (talk) 17:26, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mr Msp4realmf, this is not being a sikh or not. The Guru Granth Sahib states clearly who is a sikh and who is not a sikh. This is not a thing on which you can make an opinion - this is something which has been clearly defined. Dont know if you are a sikh or not, but if you are not clear on something then better check the authoritative sources. Im citing the Reht Maryada below -

"Any human being who faithfully believes in: (i) One Immortal Being, (ii) Ten Gurus, from Guru Nanak Dev to Guru Gobind Singh, (iii) The Guru Granth Sahib, (iv) The utterances and teachings of the ten Gurus and, (v) the baptism bequeathed by the tenth Guru, and who does not owe allegiance to any other religion is a Sikh." (Reht Maryada, Sikh Code of Conduct) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.121.21.2 (talk) 12:37, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

To the anon @ 146.121.21.2 - I have no idea if you have a valid point or not. However that doesn't give you the right to spam the article. If you have reservations on Abhinav's religion, please place the pointer in the appropriate section rather than spamming the article. We are all here to make this article meet encyclopedic and let us not move away from that. The question is not whether he is a practicing Sikh or not, but the religious origin that he belongs to. As far as his religious practices go, unless he makes a public statement, his religion is his private matter. --192.8.222.82 (talk) 13:16, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

To the anon @ 146.121.21.2 - i have placed a footnote stating that Bindra is a clean-shaven Sikh in comparison to the practice of Kesh. I hope that it addresses your issue. --192.8.222.82 (talk) 13:20, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dear 146.121.21.2, I hope you know that there are Sahajdhari Sikhs who do not wear a turban and are clean shaven. Yuvraj Singh is also a Sikh. Sikh community is proud of such Sikhs, even if they have not taken Amrit. See all the Sikh sites: SikhWiki, World Sikh News. Bindra is a non-baptized Sikh. See what his father said: "My son has proved that ‘Singh is King’ in a real sense. He has brought laurels for the whole Sikh community and for the whole nation…" Even Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (The most RESPECTED body of Amritdhari Sikhs) has congratulated him and awarded him a prize! Then WHO ARE YOU TO DECIDE WHETHER HE IS A SIKH OR NOT? 202.54.176.51 (talk) 03:03, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Your argument is ridiculous. Govts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu have also given him a prize and congratulated him. According to your argument Abhinav is a Keralite and he is a Tamil. Very Laughable !!! SGPC has honored foreign nationals as well. Does it mean, they are sikhs ? Im not sure if you have read Predicate logic, but if you have, then you would know what Im saying.
And I will add one more thing from the admin of a Sikh community called Langar Hall: "The conversation of who is a Sikh and who is not a Sikh is endless. This particular post is meant to celebrate Abhinav's achievement, not comment upon his religiousity. If you insist upon asserting yourself as the judge of Abhinav's Sikhi (or lack of it), then find another forum to post it. The conversation of cultural and religious identity is frequently discussed on The Langar Hall. If you wish to make a point, be eloquent and do it on those posts....Admin Singh". 202.54.176.51 (talk) 03:28, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

In Sikh parlance, according to Reht Maryada, they are patits (renegades - those who have fallen by the wayside). There is little chance of their ever-taking amrit. There is no getting away from the fact that in the West, the practice of taking the pahul and wearing the hair and beard unshorn is on the decline. This is admitted by most Sikh leaders and will be apparent to any shrewd observer. The danger is these clean shaven men who claim to be sahajdhari Sikhs and form the bulk of the sangat(congregation) in gurdwaras in the West may slowly slide into Hinduism. This danger is very real because they have no knowledge of Gurbani, speak mostly English and have only a smattering of Punjabi. Some do not even know the names of our ten Gurus or the Punjabi names of weekdays. Can they be classified as sahajdharis when there is little chance of their ever being keshdharis, leave alone amritdharis. And yet in the eyes of the law they are Sikhs ! because that is what their passports states. Its easy for you to associate the phrase 'Sahajdhari Sikh' with Abhinav Bindra. However, in reality he is closer to being a Hindu than to being a Sikh. Im not judging this, THIS IS A FACT. If Abhinav Bindra comes out and says that he is a Sahajdhari Sikh, I have no objection- put it up on Wikipedia. However, dont associate any tom, dick and harry with the Sikh religion. IntrepidSoldier (talk) 13:58, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

As for all other people like Yuvraj Singh, they chose not to bear a turban and they chose to cut their hair. This is a matter of convenience. the term 'Sahajdhari Sikhs' has become a matter of convenience ? How ridiculous is your observation ! Sahajdhari Sikhs are 1 step closer to becoming amritdhari sikhs. If a keshdhari sikh becomes a Sahajdhari, is he more likely to give up on sikhism or he is more likely to become an amritdhari sikh ? People like Abhinav, Yuvraj are renegades and are most likely to give up sikhism sooner rather than later. Im not judging anyone, let Abhinav Bindra or his family come out and say that they are Sahajdhari sikhs - then put it on the wikipedia page. If not, better not put information that cannot be verified. I bet you - they dont have the guts to come out and say they are Sahajdhari Sikhs. And now lemme ask you the same question - WHO ARE YOU TO DECIDE THAT HE IS A SIKH ? This information is unverifiable, hence you cannot put it up on Wikipedia. IntrepidSoldier (talk) 14:02, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am not deciding that he is a Sikh, Mr. Orthodox Fanatic Extremist. Look at these links:

"My son has proved that 'Singh is King' in a real sense. He has brought laurels for the whole Sikh community and for the whole nation," said father AS Bindra.

  • SikhiWiki: "Abhinav Bindra is 24 year old Sikh sportsman from Chandigarh, Punjab India."
  • The Langar Hall: Sikhs that shoot
Stop taking credit from Sikh community. 202.54.176.51 (talk) 04:17, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sikh Net and World Sikh News are no authority on sikh religion. Let SGPC say it, then it can be accepted. SGPC honored him, never said that he is a sikh.
As for Singh is King comment by his dad,Singh doesnt mean Sikh, Sikh means Singh. If you still dont understand - ask your 7th grade sibling to teach you predicate logic. His dad is just riding the publicity wave - shows how opportunistic he is. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.121.21.2 (talk) 13:29, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Early years

edit

I find some of the content of this section quite redundant. What has the fact that his parents are promoters of so-and-so group got to do with his early years. Furthermore, his (or his father's) business's turnover is irrelevant. Facts about his schooling are good--perhaps we may expand on that. Also, the part of him being discovered by Lt. Col Dhillon could go into this section. gnusbiz (talk) 18:25, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

As such, it does not look important. But if they were doctors, then nobody would have objected against this info. Turnover of the company is also apparently redundant, but (though it is not mentioned yet in the article) Bindra's father made Personal Training facility using his own money. And Turover also supports 'affluent' from the first sentence. --GDibyendu (talk) 18:52, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Some doubts

edit

The guy's name is Abhinav, his sister's name is Divya, his family speaks Hindi, he wasn't born in Punjab, and nothing about him whatsoever would lead one to believe he is a Punjabi Sikh other than him saying so, even one that is none too religious. The fact that he is a so-called "Sikh" seems to be overblown. Just look up any interview with his family regarding his Olympic win, if you think this stuff is made up. He doesn't represent Punjabis in the slightest. Calling oneself Sikh doesn't make it so. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 3swordz (talkcontribs) 09:44, 30 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I totally agree with you. The problem is that this is a gross misrepresentation of the Sikh community. A very bad example for the next generation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by IntrepidSoldier (talk • contribs) 14:20, 3 September 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.121.21.2 (talk)

Edit war

edit

I am responding here due to a request made at Requests for Editor Assistance. There appears to be an ongoing content dispute between user Rationalist22 and anonymous users 69.119.26.131 and 146.121.21.2 over content provided in the "Early life" section, specifically a reference made to Bindra being a Sikh.

  1. I have re-added the content as supported by the information found in the cited third-party articles.
  2. Discussion and debate on who is actually a Sikh does not belong on Wikipedia. Users have presented a number of reliable sources that claim Bindra to be a Sikh and that information can be included until somebody provides a source that says otherwise. If a source provides information contrary to an editor's beliefs, that does not mean that the source can be dismissed as unreliable.
  3. Editors who continue this Edit War may violate Wikipedia's Three-edit Revert Rule, which would then result in temporary block from editing.

If there are reliable sources that claim that Bindra is in fact not a Sikh, then please provide links to those sources here so that the article's content can be discussed. Thank you. -epicAdam(talk) 15:51, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Arithmetic

edit

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Abhinav Bindra won the gold for the Men's 10m Air Rifle final after shooting a total of 700.5. He scored 596 (fourth) in the qualifying round and out-scored all other shooters in the finals with a round of 105.5.

Is 700.5 supposed to be the sum of 596 and 105.5? Because it isn't. Which of the three numbers is wrong? Shreevatsa (talk) 22:21, 20 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good catch. Bindra's final score was 104.5, I'll fix it right away. —JAOTC 07:24, 21 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
