Development edit

A sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) was announced in December 2021, with Destin Daniel Cretton returning to write and direct. This was in addition to an overall deal Cretton signed with Marvel Studios to develop Disney+ television projects for the studio,[2] including the comedy series Wonder Man.[2][3][4] The following month, Simu Liu was expected to reprise his role as Shang-Chi. He wanted the sequel to explore what his character would do with the "newfound power" of the ten rings, as well as how he fits into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).[1] Liu said in July 2023 that he was unsure when the film would be made. He had been told that it would be released after the planned film Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (2026), which was originally scheduled for 2025 but had since been delayed. He hoped more details on the sequel would be able to be shared soon.[5] By November 2023, Cretton stepped down as director of The Kang Dynasty to focus on his commitments to other MCU projects, including the Shang-Chi sequel, with the former's delays being a factor in his departure.[6]

Filming was reported in April 2024 to be beginning in March 2025, while Jonathan Schwartz was set to return as a producer alongside Asher Goldstein from Family Owned.[7][third-party source needed] Later that month, Liu confirmed that the film was in development when responding to fans who were concerned about the lack of news on the sequel.[8]
