Anyone can join any WikiProject at any time. "A WikiProject is a collection of pages devoted to the management of a specific family of information within Wikipedia. It is not a place to write encyclopedia articles, but a resource to help coordinate and organize article writing." In other words, although we use words like "join" and "members" and such, it's really just a place within Wikipedia to work on a family of information that can be applied to multiple articles. Kind of like a collective talk page, but more. "Joining" is usually just a way to show that you are interested in the project, and when people list their names or mention a Project on their user page, they're just spreading the word about the project. If it's your question about Desert Hills, Arizona, I have no idea where to begin, but I am familiar with the existence of the Desert Hills area in Maricopa County. I wonder if, having been started by the cities bot, Rambot, it didn't distinguish the two areas. Maybe a disambiguation would work, but I really can't say being new to all this and not even having signed on yet.

Nominate articles for Portal:United States

I've worked for the past month to update Portal:United States and keep it better maintained. Though, I think the Portal:United States would be even better with broader participation. One way to do that is instead of choosing the "selected article" myself each week, if others would nominate articles and help make decisions. (same goes for pictures, though these are stocked up through July 29) If there is anything related to Arizona (or anything else related to the U.S. - culture, music, literature, geography, history, politics, ...), please nominate. Hey everyone! I noticed that the Phoenix Zoo article consisted of only one sentence, so being the big zoo fan that I am I thought that was a darn shame. Just fixed a few spelling errors that I found. I know very little about zoos but based on a little browsing of the "Zoos in the United States" category, this is already one of the bettter written articles. I do my writing in Microsoft Word because it does have spell checking. When the article is finished, I paste it from Word into the new article. Seems to work great for me. Just a suggestion. CRKingston 06:46, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team

WP:1.0 offers a good piece of technology to keep track of the status of all the articles that come under the project's purview, by offering Mathbot to create article assessment tables. These are very useful, or at least have been for articles managed by WikiProject Tropical cyclones. So, are you interested in having Mathbot work for you? Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Shhh! We're supposed to be inactive. Just kidding. I have set up article assessment for two other WikiProjects - would be happy to do it for this one. I'll have some time on Monday. Or you can read the article assessment FAQ and this assessment guide and figure out how to set it up. Basically you have to create some categories, some subpages, modify the WikiProject Arizona project banner that goes on the talk pages, and maybe a couple other things. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Settlements?

Do Arizonans think of their cities as settlements? Well, check out Category:Settlements in Arizona that's as of today in your category hierarchy. I reverted it out for Kentucky, and I recommend all states do it as well. Kentucky uses "Subdivisions" and Massachusetts uses "Administrative divisions" (both reasonable). "Settlements" are for pioneer days, not for contemporary political subdivisions. Stevie is the man! ^{Talk • Work} 04:03, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Props

Should we have articles on props like Arizona Proposition 204 (2006) and Arizona Proposition 200 (2004)? Prop 204 doesn't even seem notable at all. BJ^Talk 20:08, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

• Personally, I think having an article for every single ballot proposition is a bit much. If we do it, then all the other states are going to do it and you can have the same proposition number on the ballot year after year after year. Having an article for everyone of them means we're going to start have to creating disambiguation pages for each prop#. I would say just stick to those that are very notable, which BTW, I think both of the ones you listed are as both generated a fair amount of controversy here last year. --Nebular110 20:17, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Well I don't remember 2004 election very well but 204 this year was in the top 5 most talked about but not sure why it has an article and the other 4 don't. So right now we only have articles for the props the supporters come make articles for. I think we need to make some criteria for what props we want to keep.(only two exists as far as I can see) BJ^Talk 20:33, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Would it be possible to have one article for the props for each election? The ones that are the most controversial could have more discussion, and possibly break out into a separate article if the one article gets too long. It seems more manageable to me to have a single prop article per election than many prop articles. I know this topic is a little on the "dead" side as there's not been discussion here in weeks but just in case anyone comes looking, I recently made a List of Arizona Ballot Propositions modelled after the List of Oregon ballot measures page. It has a full listing of ballot propositions in recent years, done in sortable table by year. It includes a summary section where the proposition can be, well, summarized :) For the more notable articles as mentioned above, they can be given their own article, but I believe this to be the most succinct and navigable method of listing the propositions. Municipal Copyright

A member on the page mentioned that they are working on drawing up county maps. I have been wondering, what is the copyright on materials created/published by a municipal government, such as a county or a city? I know the U.S. federal government's publications (with some exceptions) are all public domain, so would the same apply downward based on the 14^th Amendment? If so, that should make city, road, and county maps much easier, since most of them can be taken from the websites of the governments involved. Uagent 09:31, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

As you are asking this question at WikiProject Arizona, I assume you are are interested in Arizona specific information. The short answer is no. Arizona law does not allow for free commercial use of any documents produced or supported by public funds (§ARS 39-121.03). As Wikipedia is released under the GFDL, which allows for free commercial reuse, Arizona government documents are not available under a GFDL compatible license. This of course does not exclude citing such documents as references or using them via fair use provisions. --Allen3 ^talk 10:20, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

County navigational templates

I've long worked with many Ohio articles, including (earlier this year) creating a navigational template for each of the 88 Ohio counties. Looking around at Arizona, I noticed that no county except Pima had a county navigational template, so I created one for Santa Cruz and Yuma Counties. My question is this: what would all of you think of creating such templates for the other twelve counties? Besides the design I used for those counties, you can see different designs for Franklin County, Ohio, Hancock County, Ohio, or Cimarron County, Oklahoma. If you'd like, I'd be interested in creating these templates (that's more along the lines of what I generally do on Wikipedia), although admittedly it will be a while before I can devote a bunch of time to such things — I did Santa Cruz and Yuma because there were so few towns there! Article on South Phoenix

When I was a boy growing up in Phoenix--1940s and 1950s--I believe South Phoenix was an independent city with its own mayor, manager, and council. I believe it joined Phoenix in the late or middle 1950s. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Members of Congress

I was working on the Gabrielle Giffords page and noticed the page is ranked "mid" in importance.

I believe all of Arizona's congressional delegation deserves a higher ranking than that. Who is in charge of reviewing this?--Utahredrock (talk) 22:33, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

There is no one "in charge of reviewing", but if you look at various talk page histories you will notice a handful of people usually perform most of the work within any particular Wikiproject. As to the importance rating for this person within Project Arizona, in my opinion it appears to be a little high (probably due to Wikipedia:Recentism) but not inappropriate. This individual is a first term U.S. Representative with only minor measurable impact upon Arizona to date. Has she really had more impact on Arizona than people such as Wyatt Earp, Lute Olson, John Noble Goodwin, Fife Symington , Joe Arpaio, and Stewart Udall? If her political career continues then it is likely that her impact upon the state will increase, but Wikipedia should not be predicting this impact in advance.

A significant percentage of currently rated article do seem to be somewhat arbitrarily assessed. Instead of dealing with individual articles a better course of action may be to start a discussion on creating a set of criteria to be used by this project for determining importance ratings. --Allen3 ^talk 00:38, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Arizona articles needing geographic coordinates

46 articles in Category:Arizona articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. Cortaro, Arizona

This town seems to be a suburb of Tucson, and seems to exist, but there's no article for it. I can find it mentioned in several other Wikipedia articles, it comes up in Google, and it's where something I ordered on amazon.com is being shipped from, but I can't find specifics about it. Is there a threshold for when geographic locations get articles? Cortaro is a "populated place" but it's not census-designated or incorporated. It has its own zip code and post office, much like Eleven Mile Corner, AZ or a million other places. I'm not sure there's anything to write about other than a stub listing the coordinates. --Laser brain (talk) 20:21, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

In many ways Cortaro looks more like a housing development than an independent community. Doing some searches, it appears most, if not all, of Cortaro is located within the town of Marana, Arizona. I use to live on that side of town. Cortaro Farms was founded in the early 1900's as mostly cotton farms, and was known for its irrigation network that was still used until the 1990's (most of it has been removed anyway). The road, Cortaro Farms Road, runs west to east from the Tucson Mountains nearly to the Santa Catalina Mountains in Northwest Tucson. Several communities are named after Cortaro Farms, or just Cortaro, but other than the farming and irrigation history, there probably isn't enough information on the region to write an article about it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.254.192.243 (talk) 04:58, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Courthouse Photos

I propose that photos of all Arizona county courthouses be added to their respective article, and possibly the corresponding county seat article. This would serve to beautify the article and serve as a visual representation of the county. Help is needed adding them to their respective county pages by adding the following to the County Infobox template

North/Northwest Phoenix

North/Northwest Phoenix is a very interesting article, but I believe it should be chopped up into a North (or Northeast, although I like North) Phoenix and a Northwest Phoenix. This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. FA for February 14, 2012

The centennial anniversary of Arizona's admission to the Union is a little under 18 months away. It would be nice to have an Arizona related FA appear on that day. Unfortunately the list of articles currently qualifying for consideration (i.e. already at FA status and having been listed as a TFA) related to the state is limited. Of the three FAs associated with Arizona that have not previously appeared on the Main Page, U.S. Route 491 is located entirely outside the state, half of Hoover Dam is in Nevada and the dam's construction was actively opposed by Arizona, and The Queen of Porn would not represent the state in a very good light. As a result, and given the long lead times involved in getting many articles up to FA status, I would like to call upon project members start thinking about appropriate subjects and begin the efforts needed to have at least one article available in time and which does a good job of representing Arizona. --Allen3 ^talk 00:38, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Arizona articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

People with knowledge of Arizona might be able to shed some light on the topic of discussion at Talk:El Zaribah Shrine Auditorium#Requested move, which deals with the building in Phoenix that was built as the El Zaribah Shrine Auditorium, was officially renamed the Polly Rosenbaum Building, houses the Arizona Museum of Mining and Minerals, and is now apparently slated to be converted a history museum.
