Automatic addition of Sanskrit diacritics while typing

Hi, I want to present a new JavaScript mod for Sanskrit input in roman characters. The script can be installed by editing your personal monobook.js script file.

The first function of the Sanskrit script will auto-replace romanized Sanskrit words with their proper diacritical form. So basically when you are typing Sakti it auto-replaces with Śakti

The dictionary might still have a few mistakes so please double check every word with the proper sources you cite from.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Visarga/monobook.js

The second function of this script is to help you manually add diacritics into the text. This is the replace table: 'a--|ā', 'A--|Ā', 'u--|ū', 'U--|Ū', 'i--|ī', 'I--|Ī', 'r..|ṛ', 'l..|ḷ', 'L..|Ḷ', 'm..|ṃ', 'M..|Ṃ', 'h..|ḥ', 'H..|Ḥ', "S|Ś", "s|ś", 's..|ṣ', 'S..|Ṣ', 'n..|ṇ', 'N..|Ṇ', 'n~~|ñ', 'N~~|Ñ', 't..|ṭ', 'T..|Ṭ', 'd..|ḍ', 'D..|Ḍ', 'r.-|ṝ', 'R.-|Ṝ', 'L.-|Ḹ', 'l.-|ḹ'

So in simpler words, a double minus "--" will put the diacritical line over the last letter, a double dot ".." will add a dot under, a double "~~" will add the cedilla over n ("Ñ") and so on. For letters with 2 diacritics like "Ḹ" you add ".-" after L.

The script has been tested in Firefox and Safari.

Great script, thanks. --Shruti14 t c s 15:35, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Monkey mind

I created this article Monkey mind.

I knew it was a term in Buddhism, but apparently it is a term in Hinduism also. This website [1] references the term in the Ramayana and claims the "concept of a monkey mind is a popular one in Hindu literature."

If anyone could give the devangari for the term and any information on it, from a Hindu perspective, that would be great!   Zenwhat (talk) 18:48, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

That website is very poor. ("Soorpanka" for Śūrpaṇakhā wasn't a good start.) The Ramayana treated there is R.K. Narayan's retelling, not of the Sanskrit epic, but of a medieval rendering in Tamil by Kamban. Maybe "monkey mind" is a popular notion, but I've never heard of it. I suspect a vernacular idiom is involved, of which "monkey mind" is a literal translation. rudra (talk) 19:19, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I think the phrase "monkey mind" is entirely a modern teaching device used by some teachers of meditation, though there might be some older literature that uses the monkey as an example of mental restlessness (without using that exact phrase). priyanath talk 21:20, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
The website says that in the Ramayana, the monkey king Sugriva says about his "monkey mind". Linking this to the origin of the term "Monkey mind" is WP:OR. The article needs an explicit reference saying clearing that "monkey mind" is Hindu. --Redtigerxyz (talk) 13:33, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
The website is based on a version of a retelling of the Ramayana, and not the original text itself. The term is (relatively) modern and new to Hinduism, although the concept of an unsettled mind is not. The term is very uncommon and rarely used, if at all, by Hindus today. I have done extensive searches, and I can find no other reliable sources to verify that the term originated in Hinduism, and I am almost certain that it did not. --Shruti14 t c s 14:05, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
Also, I have examined the website in question. It is the website of an English professor, not one who has studied Hinduism. Many of his inaccurate remarks (Hanuman as "king of monkeys", "magic monkey army", Ravana as the primary "demon force of chaos and confusion", speculaltion and confusion about why Rama "didn't know" about Sita's abduction and "failed" as an avatar of Vishnu, many mispellings, among other things) indicate his limited knowledge of the religion and the subject. I am not sure that the website should be used. --Shruti14 t c s 14:11, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Vaishnavism's relation to Vedic religion

California_textbook_controversy_over_Hindu_history

A somewhat older topic, but should the California controversy article be upgraded to B-class? It has improved a lot, enough that Start class may be a bit too low. Just a suggestion to send to you. --Shruti14 t c s 05:29, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Merger of Ekadasi and Ekadashi

Both articles discuss the same subject - the day known as Ekadashi. I propose that the articles be merged, as they discuss the same thing. --Shruti14 t c s 20:34, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

See WP:Merge for instructions on merging articles. This should non-controversial. Abecedare (talk) 01:05, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
If no one objects, and the proposition to merge the articles is accepted, I will begin merging the articles soon. --Shruti14 t c s 00:13, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Expand {{Infobox church/sandbox}} to cover all places of worship?

There is a proposal to convert the draft infobox template {{Infobox church/sandbox}} into a template that can be used for all places of worship. We would like your views on whether you think this is a good idea, and if you are able to help identify parameters that would be relevant to the religion that your WikiProject deals with. Do join the discussion taking place at "Template talk:Infobox church". — Cheers, JackLee talk 03:41, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Feedback needed at Ramakrishna

There is an edit dispute between myself and another editor at Ramakrishna over how much weight should be given to (scholars) views that Ramakrishna had pedophilic tendencies, was a closet transexual, etc. Those views were already in the article, and accurately so since there have been a couple of books written about it - but since I added some opposing scholar viewpoints, he has added an avalanche of quotes that give it undue weight, in my opinion. Since there have been only the two of us in dispute until now, and I don't see it being resolved without more opinions, I would like to invite other editors to look at the article and work on it. I'll step aside from the article for a few days, to give other editors a chance to resolve this. More specifically: Ramakrishna#Contemporary scholarship priyanath talk 16:02, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Based on good feedback from several editors, I've proposed a rewrite of the disputed section at Talk:Ramakrishna#Proposed rewrite of POV/Undue Weight section. Feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, priyanath talk 21:23, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
One more call for editor input on the Ramakrishna article. I’ve added some last suggestions, as real life is taking me away from Wikipedia for awhile. If anyone is interested, there is a great opportunity to edit the section on modern attempts to psychoanalyze Ramakrishna. (i.e., there is a lot of room for improvement there :-), in the entire article also ) See the bottom of the Talk:Ramakrishna page for discussion. Cheers, priyanath talk 04:21, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Hinduism: Articles of unclear notability

Hello,

there are currently 12 articles in the scope of this project which are tagged with notability concerns. I have listed them here. (Note: this listing is based on a database snapshot of 12 March 2008 and may be slightly outdated.)

I would encourage members of this project to have a look at these articles, and see whether independent sources can be added, whether the articles can be merged into an article of larger scope, or possibly be deleted. Any help in cleaning up this backlog is appreciated. For further information, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Notability.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the Notability project page or on my personal talk page. (I'm not watching this page however.) Thanks! --B. Wolterding (talk) 16:40, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Stephen Knapp and reliable sources

I have been looking over the Stephen Knapp article and its potential references. I have yet to find any that meet the standards of Wikipedia:Reliable sources. Any information on potential references (reliable sources) would be appreciated. My concern is that without reliable sources and only a list of his self published books, this article seems to be an advertisement. Please see, Stephen Knapp and reliable sources. Thanks. Krishna and Thelema

If anyone would like to add to this debate on Talk:Krishna, please do so. What should have been a trivial discussion on a trivial topic has escalated to a rather heated debate and potential edit war, and we need the opinions of many more editors to help settle the matter quickly. --Shruti14 t c s 23:33, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Radha-vallabha

Hello,

I'm currently trying to sort out whether the article Radha-vallabha meets the notability guidelines (it has been tagged with notability concerns about one year ago). I would like your advice, since the article seems a bit confusing to me. It does not cite any sources. I searched for the term "Radha-vallabha" on Google Books, and from the results it is not even clear to me whether Radha-vallabha is a denomination (as the article states), or rather a deity, or the name of a person.

Can you tell me what to do with the article? Is the content correct, and can it be attributed to sources? Or does the article need to be rewritten? Or should it, after all, be removed completely?

Please leave your comments on the article's talk page. Thanks, --B. Wolterding (talk) 13:00, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Nath page clean up

The Nath page has been the subject of a long-running edit war in which a group of editors from the International Nath Order have been systematically inserting their unrecognized and extremely sketchy pseudo-guru into the Nath pages, and then citing that individual's own works to justify their inclusion in the page, which deleting the leaders of other more representative (i.e. based in India, not led by Englishmen, recognized in the local culture) groups. There have been several indications that Wikipedia admins who are a part of this pseudo-Nath group have been colluding to maintain the page in a broken state to divert attention to their group. The whole thing is a manipulation of public information resources on behalf of a small religious sect, and really should be stamped on in much the same way that we monitor abuses from Scientology. There have also been reports of harassment towards other Nath groups from the International Nath Order's representatives who like to represent themselves as the only living branch of the Nath Sampradaya operative in the west.

Highly problematic, as the edit histories and discussion pages show. Please keep an eye on this page and moderate abuses when you see them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.82.115.34 (talk) 02:13, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Edem Agbotui

I was wondering if a member of WikiProject Hinduism could have a look at the article Edem Agbotui. It was copied from a web page [2] with all instances of "Murugar" changed to "Edem Agbotui". Murugar appears to refer to Murugan, so I'm not sure if "Edem Agbotui" is another name for Murugan, or if this article was created as a hoax. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks. -- Whpq (talk) 10:10, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

I deleted the article Edem Agbotui as a blatant copyvio. To look into Whpq's question, please see the source text at: http://www.saigan.com/heritage/gods/muruga.html. I'll leave it for someone who knows about this to decide whether to leave it deleted, or create a redirect. --barneca (talk) 10:35, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
It should remain deleted (I'm gratified that my {{db-copyvio}} tag was acted on so quickly), because any legitimate material would have to go to Murugan. Murugan is a chthonic deity assimilated to the Kartikeya/Skanda legends, so no doubt there are many local variations. Best to restrict material to reliable sources. rudra (talk) 13:31, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
I agree there shouldn't be an article there; Whpq and I are just asking if anyone knows whether it was a local variation (and should be a redirect to Murugan), or if it was a hoax (and there should be nothing there at all). --barneca (talk) 13:50, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
I think it was a hoax, or rather, a joke. Some googling suggests that "Edem Agbotui" is a real person, who may even have been a WP editor (Edem3000) at some point. So, not even a redirect, IMO. rudra (talk) 14:28, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for looking into it. Looks like a hoax. Cheers! -- 14:33, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
(e/c) Thanks for the add'l input, I've now deleted the talk page too, and agree this is resolved. --barneca (talk) 14:35, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Spamming a bogus book

Wikidas (talk · contribs) is apparently enamored of a book, Readings of Vedic Literature: The Tradition Speaks for Itself, by one Satsvarupa dasa Goswami of ISKCON fame. He has spammed about a dozen Hinduism-related pages, maybe more, with excerpts from the book. He has also learned to wikilawyer. When told that his edit constitutes WP:COPYVIO (cf. this, the second of 4 sample page thumbnails on the book link above), he contends "Fair use" and warns about 3RR! If the incongruity of a Nataraja image under "VEDIC" in large letters weren't warning enough to the dubious contents of the book, nonsense like this should leave no doubt -- to everyone except him, of course. We have a problem. rudra (talk) 13:38, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Dear Rudrashrman, It appears that besides the fact that you seem unable to maintain WP:NPOV you also can not accept WP:FAITH. This book IS created by one of ISKCON writers and is since 1976 has been used as a text book on Hinduism in many colleges and universities in US. What is your problem? Are you able to accept a balance of views coming from Vaishnava perspective? Wikidās ॐ 14:53, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

The contents of the book are demonstrably nonsensical. For example, the notion that the Mahabharata, or the Bhagavadgita (which was an addition to it) or the Puranas (FGS!) are "vedic" is outright ABSURD. You even managed to copy-paste a reference to Radhakrishnan&Moore from that idiotic book. Have you read R&M? Not the whole book, just the "General Introduction" at the beginning, starting on p.xvii. And not even the whole introduction, just the first five pages or so would be enough. This ISKCON book is so far from a WP:RS, it isn't even funny. rudra (talk) 15:06, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

(Edit conflict) Wikidas, there are plenty of ISKCON sympathisers that have productively contributed to Wikipedia such as User:GourangaUK, User:Ism schism and User:Chopper Dave. These experienced editors know the extent to which ISKCON views should dominate mainstream Vaishnava, Hinduism and other related articles so I suggest you seek their advice on how to ensure an adequate (not too much and not too little) coverage of their notions on pages where they appear pertinent. By the way, your extreme accusations of people who disagree with you could tarnish the reputation of a movement which is perceived as being quite pacifist in nature. GizzaDiscuss © 17:33, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Wikidās, please assume good faith and do not accuse other editors as being "ISKCON hating folk" as you did here, or accuse others of any "anti-ISKCON conspiracy", as none such exists.[6] The other editors are working with good intentions, namely, the improvement of Wikipedia, and want to keep articles as NPOV as possible. Sources about ISKCON or another sectarian group should be mentioned as referring to the beliefs of that group, and not the Hindu religion as a whole - that is the point they are trying to make. Just as an ISKCON devotee would be upset if his/her beliefs were denied or mislabeled as the beliefs of others on Wikipedia (which would be a violation of WP:NPOV), so other traditional, mainstream Hindus would be offended by the beliefs of others as being labeled as theirs, when in fact they are not, and so the points of view must be clearly stated, and a neutral point of view should be maintained. --Shruti14 t c s 02:26, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey guys! I have been saying all these things for a while about these ISKCON people on wikipedia! Ever since I started editing, I have been in pitch philosophical/Scriptural battles with these ISKCON guys! I had to be like Parasurama with them. Their group philosophy is anti-Shruti (against the four vedas, main upanishads), anti-hindu tradition (against agni-hotra, sandyavandana, hindu rituals), anti-hindu denominational (against Shiva worshipers), and pure brake-off group concoction and speculation. My experience here in L.A. with them is that they can get violent and aggressive against people of other Hindu denominations, krishna groups and buddhist. Wikidas said to some one "a balance of views coming from Vaishnava perspective?", well, Vaishnava means "Vishnu worshipper", they dont know this. And, his group veiws are not in accordance with traditional, Orthodox Vaishnavism; which follows the four Veda, real main Upanishads and etc.Govinda Ramanuja dasa USA (talk) 15:53, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
GRd, The issues is not a person's or a group's belief, but rather an individual editor's editing and references. Voiced objections on Svayam bhagavan discussion page.

I just wanted to voice my consern with some ISKCON ideas on this discussion page, first;

  • In the “Not Neutral” section, the two paragraphs that states…“"From the perspective of Gaudiya Nimbaraka and Vallabhacharya…the reason for Krishna's obscurity in Veda is that He is known only through devotion”...this whole section, these two paragraphs and every sentence, I am sorry to say, but, is just preposterous, unfounded and non-Vedic. It is plain “brake-off group” speculation and concoction. This is the most out-landish statement I have ever came across in my decade of studying the Sastra or holy scriptures of India. I am actually shocked that people believe this or that it was even mentioned. I will be senting these unfounded statements to some school trainned pundits, brahmanas and swami’s in Vaishnavism and Shavitism. It is mind-blowing; this is an absolute cult belief. I am shocked and dumb-founded right now by these questionable speculative statements.
  • In the “Predating Other Hindu Traditions (Lead)” section; statements like….”This concept in has ancient roots that predate formation of current major Hindu traditions” and “the sources pre-date formation of some schools such as Sri Sampradaya”…again, are totally unfounded, speculative, concocted, preposterous and out-landish. The ISKCON/Gaudiya group and their beliefs started in the 1500’s…period. Just by Wikipedia imformation, that The Sri Sampradayam existed first. Vasudeva is a name of Vishnu/Narayana. I have been studying the scriptures for ten years, and I have NEVER heard of this supposed Vasudeva/Krishna pre-Hindu, pre-Vaishnava group..it is speculation and a fantasy. Period.
  • In the “Yadu realization” section …again, this whole section is total absolute concoction, speculation and mis-translation of scripture. This is just a “brake-off” group fantasy. Again, this section is unfounded.
  • In the “References” section….the scriptures that the ISKCON people use are heavily mistranslated and heavily bias towards the ISKCON/Gaudiya group’s speculative beliefs.
  • In the “Lead” section….it states; “In the above-mentioned Vaishnava traditions, Krishna worship and understanding as the Supreme is believed to have occurred since the existence of the creatures began.” Before the advent of the Vaishnava schism during 1200’s to 1600’s (which the Gaudiyas/ISKCON had their start), within Vaishnavism, Vishnu/Narayana is the first, according to scripture, saints and tradition. Again, this is pure speculation, concoction and totally unfounded. This is a “brake-off” group belief.
  • In the “Meaning” section…First; The reason that Krishna is depicted as BLUE is fact that in traditional Hinduism and traditional Vaishnavism (outside of ISKCON/Gaudiyas) he is an avatara of Vishnu/Narayana. The symbolic reason that Vishnu is Blue, is because it is the color of The endless sky and the deepness of the ocean. It represents Vishnu's endless, all-pervading nature. And, blue is the color of sky or ether or akasha, and the throat chakra;the place of speech, hence chanting/intoning Vishnu's name is important.

Second; alot of the murtis of India, including Jaganatha, who is a form of Vishnu, the stone is black. Even Venkateshwara is depicted as black. I was told the black stone was auspicious and absorbs the power of the mantras.

I would like to see a non-ISKCON qoute from the Mahabharata that says that Krishna means "all-attractive".

"Commentators from different Vaisnava traditions on the Vishnu sahasranama offer explanations on a similar lines."...to my understanding is this is not true; Krishna means "Black" or "dark". "Contemporary Vaisnava acaryas"; first, who are they? Or are they ISKCON gurus and spokesmen. The "Vaishnava" acaryas that I know do not say things like this.

"There are authoritative descriptions in the Brahma Samhita, Srimad-Bhagavatam, Bhagavad-gita and many of the Puranas"...the Brahma Samhita is an Gaudiya book; it was written around the 15th and 16th century. The Srimad-Bhagavatam is the Bhagavata purana and the Bhagavad-gita; both translations that are talked about are the ISKCON ones, which are mistranslated in many verses. Puranas; which puranas are being described?

I have personally sent an email to the Jagannatha temple to clairify whether Jagannatha is a form of Vishnu or Krishna.Govinda Ramanuja dasa USA (talk) 21:58, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Category:Hindu gods

The cat is being replaced by the general cat of Category:Hindu deities, by an editor in many articles. I oppose this as deity stands for a "A god or goddess", a more general category than Hindu gods.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 14:15, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

I also oppose such a move. This is an important issue. Concerning such a large move, a discussion should take place before any changes are made. This has not occured yet. Thanks. Ism schism (talk) 15:25, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
Definite opposed. Deity as a category is much better. There is so little control over the categories as they stand. Wikidās ॐ 15:31, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Categories, deities, gods

Category:Hindu gods and Category:Hindu deities appear to be redundant. The articles don't make a distinction between the two, and articles use a mixture of both phrases. I suggest merging one into the other, and using sub-categories more effectively. I started to do this already, because to me it seems obvious, but someone suggested I bring it up here first. Personally I would like gods to stay along with Hindu goddesses. Hindu deities can become a parent cat, which contains the gods and goddesses sub-cats but with no articles. With all due respect to political correctness, the gender of the Hindu deities is rather important so I believe we should specify whether the deity is male or female (ie. god or goddess respectively). ISKCON-centric Hinduism

I'm not sure where to bring this up, so I brought it up here. I was looking through many of the Hinduism-related articles, such as Bhagavan, Krishna, Bhakti, and many many more, and I've noticed that they tend to be very ISKCON-centric. The ISKCON view of things is described in much more detail and given much more weight than any other view. Even in a non-Hinduism article like Names of God, the Krishna-centric view of ISKCON was pushed much more strongly than any other Hindu view.

Please understand that I don't have anything against ISKCON, but the fact is that they are but one sect of Hinduism and don't speak for all Hindus. I've noticed that some of the most active Hindu Wikipedians are members of ISKCON and so it's natural that the ISKCON view would get more weight. However, we need more balance in these articles. Could we please figure out some way to patrol the various Hinduism-based articles to make sure that the views of the various schools of Hinduism are all fairly represented? --Hnsampat (talk) 13:21, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

I agree with you to a large extent, and I'll see what you can do. A NPOV, balanced view is important. However, I doubt that any bias is intentional - as you said, it's likely because ISKCON Wikipedians are some of our most active editors. --Shruti14 t c s 03:50, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

I agree with Hnsampat, But, I have been saying that there is a strong iskcon slant to many of the articles. I dis-agree with shruti14, that it is un-intentional...it is very intentional. Just look at the comments and edits done by gaurangaUK and wikidas And, the main iskcon culprit is wikidas, who, has marred many of the articles with non-sense information and incoherent references...and no one is doing any thing about it. And, it is absolutely funny, that I have written almost word for word what Hnsampat has said....but, a year ago. I really think it is time to make this a legal issue. Hnsampat is the 7th or 9th editor who has openly mentioned this. WE MUST DO SOME THING ABOUT THIS ISSUE.Govinda Ramanuja dasa USA (talk) 08:49, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Can any of the above editors substantiate their claim of articles being Pro-ISKON. It is very important to show proof of what you say, because if you cant substantiate your aquisitions your wasting everyones time here, if you can, action will have to be taken to resolve the issue. I personally do not find any particluar article being vandalised by ISKON edtiors. ATG Contact 14:59, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Hinduism wikiproject assessments

While assessing articles for the project, I have noticed that the only FA that is given the score of TOP is the article on Ganesha. While I am NOT questioning Ganesha's position as the only TOP FA, I do question why there are not more. Do any other editors have comments or concerns about this? Concerning its place in history, I would suggest Angkor Wat as a good candidate. I am open to any ideas as I know it is a long process to FA status. Thanks. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Discussion for wikidas's edits

Dear everyone, is there any way we all can discuss that matter of wikidas's edits, changes etc. to many, many articles that consern Hinduism. For instance, the Svayam Bhagavan article, which took me two and a half day to try to make as non-bias as possible. He goes through re-changes the edits to suit is own group belief. And, his edits on the Narayana article..." In Kumara Purana he is identified with Brahman and Krishna-Vishnu. In Brahmavaivarta Purana, Narayana is considered different to Krishna and in the same text he is considered part of Krishna. [1]"..I really would like to contest this. Where is it in these puranas does it say this? And, most importantly, in regards to the history section of the Svayam Bhagavan and other articles that he has done, is his insistance on this supposed "pre-Vaishnava" Vasu-deva/Krishna cult to justify his group belief. He has cause many editor lots of TIME in re-editing his work, varifying his references, and arguments. What can we do?Govinda Ramanuja dasa USA (talk) 02:40, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Dashavatara of Vishnu

Can someone help me understand why Dashavatara of Vishnu has just received a HIGH importance rating? The page didn't even exist 4 months ago, and is barely more than an a copy and paste of the Dashavatar section of Avatar. It's my impression that most topics of high importance have been in existence for a much longer period of time. The Dashavatar section of the Avatar article has not been expanded for many months, and at this point it would be hard to justify breaking it out into a larger article. Dashavatara of Vishnu has been the subject of a merge request since late May, and that seems a more reasonable fate than a High importance rating. --Nemonoman (talk) 19:38, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

The role of faith (saddha) in Hinduism.

I am not knowledgeable on Hinduism, so I need help from someone here.

Currently, the article on Shraddha is only about Buddhism, but the concept applies to Hinduism as well. Originally, the article inappropriately contained some information on the Hindu funeral ceremony, "Shraadha," and it contained some good references to other dharmic religions, including Hinduism. Someone removed all of this, though. [15] A separate article on the funeral ceremony needs to be made, while some of the information on Hinduism should be restored.

Faith in Buddhism redirects to Shradda, so the article needs to be split somehow.   Zenwhat (talk) 19:01, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Also, a sub-section on Hinduism needs to be added to the main article on Faith.   Zenwhat (talk) 19:11, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

I asked User:Shii to move Shraddha to Faith in Buddhism and it was moved. So, now somebody just needs to dig through the history of Faith in Buddhism to find whatever information there is on Hinduism that was there previously. An article on Faith in Hinduism needs to be be made and added to the main article on Faith, and there needs to be some kind of disambiguation (or possibly a name page?) for Shraddha.   Zenwhat (talk) 23:42, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for this Zenwhat. Shraddha can either become a disambugation page or a summary of Faith in the major "Dharmic religions." But the second option would only be viable if the concept of Shraddha is also found in Jainism, and perhaps in Sikhism. The main Shraddha page could then have one section for each religion. GizzaDiscuss © 23:49, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Disambiguation page for it is possibly the best option at this stage. Well spotted Zenwhat. Wikidās ॐ 08:43, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
I added a section on Hinduism to the faith article. If any of you could proofread it, expand it, etc., that would be very helpful!   Zenwhat (talk) 07:37, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, Zenwhat - we never noticed that one! Yes, shradda definitely applies to Hinduism. I'm not sure if the article should be a disambiguation page, but instead should have a summary of information of its application to Hinduism and Buddhism, with links to their respective main articles. --Shruti14 t c s 13:33, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Standardization of Roman text for Indic words

I apologize for the extensive usage I make of the word "standard" in this comment; I just couldn't think of anything else that would fit in.

I would like to suggest the replacement of all non-standard Roman transliterations of Indic words (e.g. Ishvara, sankhya) to standardized ones (IAST) with properly-placed diacritical marks (Īśvara, sāṃkhya).

I just went through the article on sāṃkhya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samkhya), and was appalled by the way words were spelled out there. Some examples are "prakriti" (A common tendency of people from a certain part of India: to use "ṛ" and "ri" interchangeably), "panch" (Another common tendency of these same people: to swallow up the vowel "a" at the end of a word) and "purusha".

I also recently visited the article on prakṛti (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prakrti). It's even worse here: the article starts off "Prakrti or Prakriti (from Sanskrit language प्रकृ्रति, prakṛti)..."

1) Both the forms outside the bracket are simply WRONG, and it is in the interest of maintaining high standards that they be removed.

2) The Devanāgarī spelling is also wrong! It says "prakṛrati" or something like that.

3) The IAST transliteration is, quite surprisingly, correct.

I have seen such nonstandard spelling in many articles. It would be a good idea to start correcting them, and also to ensure IAST spelling of all Indic words before publishing any article hereafter. A good example of an article which almost entirely uses standard spelling is the one on Mīmāṃsā (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purva_mimamsa). It should serve as a good standard-setter.

Varun achar (talk) 10:45, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

I do not support IASTized name, as other readers may not be aware of IAST. The Indic words like Shiva, Ishvara or Ganesha can be easily understood. As in featured article Ganesha, i feel the IAST may be mentioned, but further usage should in Indic terms for consistency.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 12:53, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I agree that the common spelling of a term is useful, because not everybody is familiar with IAST. But for consistency, standardization is the only solution. When there is no set standard, there arises ambiguity in spelling, which in turn makes the article unprofessional and sometimes even confusing. For instance, the name "Rāma" is spelled by different people as "Rama", "Raama", "Ram", etc. In most cases, a single article contains contributions from many users, and consequently many different spellings for the same thing. There's inconsistency and also potential ambiguity: for instance, "Rama" may be a spelling for "Ramā" as well!

With due regard to readers unfamiliar with such systems, an article's introductory paragraph may be made to include the main form of the term (i.e., the title of the Wikipedia entry), its standardized transliterations (Devanāgarī, IAST, other relevant languages / scripts, etc.), and some common Roman spellings. This should help in identifying the IAST version with the common spelling the reader may be familiar with. In fact many articles DO include these things in the introductory lines.

With such an introduction, I don't think there would be a problem if the rest of the article were entirely standardized. This way, both easy readability and consistency are achieved.

And of all possible options for a standard, I suggest IAST because it's the most widely used for Sanskrit / Pali / Indic transliteration. Varun achar (talk) 19:54, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

One needs to be mindful that not even every person in the world can type maṅgala or the word Devanāgarī in the search box, in fact there are no popular tools that are (naipuṇya) :-) practical or exact for such a writing, all searches starting with Google are using normal letters and do not replace diacritics with regular expression, internet is not IAST, therefore the proper usage in place of IAST without the diacritic marks should be used. IAST is the correct and the primary system. however the popular usage is the way it is to be used for article names, as the Wiki is functional, not only academic, i.e. if IAST is "Rāma" the article name should be "Rama". However I agree that IAST spelling should be the basis of spelling in the body of the article, as it is the right way of doing it. There is a great need of consistency in Indic articles and therefore if some articles can not have IAST spelling in the name, having popularity in other spelling use, the proper IAST spelling should be used in the article body as a standard. Wikidās ॐ 20:52, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Wikidas, we can have the article name contain the diacritic remarks, but then have the non-diacritic word be a redirect.   Zenwhat (talk) 03:23, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Please see Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(Dharmic) for a past proposal on standardising transliterations. I support a simplified transliteration with the IAST accompanying it for those keen to know the pronunciation. Because the average reader is IAST illiterate, they still may pronounce Rama as Ramā even if it is spelt as Rāma. The Devanagari can also be mentioned once at the very start of the article, as in already the case. GizzaDiscuss © 23:25, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

I agree with using standard diacritical marks. For an example of where this is necessary, see Shraddha. Check to make sure those diacritical marks are correct too, because I can't read Sanskrit and just made the "aa" an "ā", because I know offhand that's what ā stands for.

Although people can misread Rama as Ramā, even when spelt as Rāma, Wikipedia cannot be responsible for such basic ignorance. Most texts on Hinduism use these kinds of marks. Using the non-standard "Raama" would be veery seerioously uuuugly.

What we could do is use IAST, but then specify the phoenetic pronunciation in parentheses, so that we get the benefit of IAST, but there is no misunderstanding about the difference between Braahman and Brahmaan.   Zenwhat (talk) 03:20, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

The temple is not a mainstream Vishnu temple, not even a direct Vishnu temple at all, but of Ayya Vaikundar, who Ayyavazhis believe to be an avatar of Vishnu. Now, Ayyavazhi is a new religion as per references on the article, so why it be included in Hindu temples? Even if considered a Hindu sect, not part of mainstream Hindu faith. Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Hinduism

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Javandisvara / Cevvantisvarar

I'm working on the German language article about the Meenakshi Amman temple of Madurai. I just came across the fact that besides the shrines dedicated to Sundareshvara (Shiva) and Minakshi there is a third separate, though much smaller and less important shrine dedicated to another god which one of my sources names as "Javandisvara", another one as "Cevvantīsvarar". These seem to be the Sanskrit and Tamil forms of the same name, but I wasn't able to identify the goddess. Neither of them produces any google hits, nor does any possible spelling variant. The only clue I could find out is that the Madras Tamil Lexicon has an entry for செவ்வந்தி cevvanti and gives the meaning as Chrysanthemum indicum. But I have no idea who that "Lord of the Chrysantheme" is supposed to be. Does anyone of you know, by any chance? --BishkekRocks (talk) 18:33, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Vamachara

The article on vamachara says (my bold):

"pancha-makara or the "Five Ms", also known as the pancha-tattva. In literal terms they are: Madya (wine), Mamsa (meat), Matsya (fish), Mudra (cereal), and Maithuna (sexual intercourse).[7] Mudra usually means ritual gestures, but as part of the five Ms it is parched cereal.[8]

Vamachara traditions place strict ritual limits on the use of these literal forms and warn against nonsanctioned use. If so used they encourage the person to sin.[9]Practioners of vamachara rituals may make symbolic substitutions for these literal things, which are not permitted in orthodox Hindu practice."

Grammatically, this says sex is not permitted in Hinduism? :) Please could someone edit the article to explain what it is about Maithuna, what manifestation of sex those practicing vamachara perform which is frowned upon/different from orthodox hinduism? Sticky Parkin 16:15, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Oh and also, could you clarify which foods count as 'parched cereal' as it's not a term we use in the UK. Sticky Parkin 16:17, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Saints Alive!

I think we have a serious problem with a lot of the articles about the saints. I was trying to offer advice on how to improve Changdev Maharaj and went looking for a better example for copying. What I found dismayed me. Some of the saints' articles lack any encyclopaedic content while others are entirely unreferenced or written "in universe", making unprovable mystical claims. A lot of them could be deleted at any time. Even though I was not looking to delete any articles, I found one, Narahari Sonar, so empty and pointless that I could not do anything but put db-blank on it. Rather than offer advice on a specific article I thought it best to come here and offer more general advice.

I think a systematic effort is required to improve the articles on the saints. One of the saint articles which is already up to scratch should be used as a guide for fixing the rest, working through each article in the category. The things that need to fixed are:

  • The introduction should be simple and coherent providing enough context that somebody unfamiliar with the subject is able to understand what it is about. It should not make any mystical/religious claims but should note that these exist and briefly explain what they are.
  • The articles should include any known historical biographical information (e.g. birth date, death date, etc) about the subject which is verifiable separately from the mystical/religious beliefs about the saint. If there are none then that is fine.
  • The mystical/religious beliefs about the saint should be documented in a way that makes no comment on their truth or otherwise. For example, if the article claims that Changdev Maharaj actually lived for 1400 years then that can be deleted at any time as unverifiable. If the article says that it is believed' that Changdev Maharaj lived for 1400 years then that is fine so long as it is verified that this really is a part of his hagiography.
  • Everything should be verifiable and referenced against mainstream Hindu sources. If there is a Hindu equivalent to the Catholic idea of a canonical list of saints with officially endorsed hagiographies, then that would be the ideal starting point.
  • Make a new article about Narahari Sonar to replace the one that is probably going to be deleted.

Unfortunately, this is not something I can be of much help with as I am not at all familiar with the Hindu saints. --DanielRigal (talk) 11:00, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Nice suggestions, but I must say Narahari Sonar is notable Varkari saint, who deserved an article. Will create one shortly. --Redtigerxyz Talk 15:59, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Swaminarayan temples navbox templates

Are the templates with subpages at Category:Swaminarayan temples navbox templates correct usage? I believe they are incorrect as per the Template namespace guidelines. Also, each of them is directly transcluded in only 1 article. As per the guidelines, such granular information should be included in that 1 article and the template should be deleted.

If there is some future plan for these templates, kindly let me know so that I can understand the reason for this organisation. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 11:47, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Wow, what a mess! Yes, those templates should be nominated for deletion. I have posed a query on the TFD talkpage on how to do so efficiently. Abecedare (talk) 11:08, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
I had earlier got lot of similar templates, related to 2004 Lok Sabha election results, removed. It was heavy work to substitute the information in that case, as each was included in a different Constituency / state article!
In this case, it should take a minute to substitute all in this 1 article. Nominating them at TFD is easier too - I have done it before. See the alerts shown as of noon UTC on 7th January. Shall I go ahead? VasuVR (talk, contribs) 11:28, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

The meaning of "Sanatana"

In the article on Sanatana Kumara, which has a lot of useful information from my viewpoint, there appears to be a mistake in the very first section where it is said that "sanatana" means "truth" in Sanskrit. I am not a Sanskrit scholar but in my reading of English Hindu texts I have come to the conclusion that "sanatana" means something like "eternal" or "everlasting" in English - not "true" or "truth" which would be "satya" or "sathya." Hindu related articles of questionable notability

While assessing articles for the project, I have come across numerous articles that are advertisements of sorts for local ashrams and non notable gurus. Currently there are about four or five Hindu gurus and/or ashrams that have little or no notability and little to no reliable sources. I have nominated these articles for deletion. Please feel free to review these nominations at, Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Hinduism. Thanks. Ism schism (talk) 14:20, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Ism. I find that it could be sometimes a problem of spelling or a language. What if a guru has notability as in a local language such as say Polish, German, Gujarati or Bengali but not in English media as such, does it warrant the notability on English Wikipedia? Does anyone here can comment on it? Wikidās ॐ 16:34, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
I would tend to have to favor Ism's approach, although I might simply prod them for deletion myself under those circumstances. While it is true that these individuals might be notable in other languages, we can't assume that. If a foreign-language source is provided to estabalish notability, of course, even if you can't read it, that can be sufficient to ensure that the article not be deleted. Article Prayer (also Prayer in Hinduism)

I added a dubious tag to the prayer article because it seemed to imply that the Smarta/impersonalist view that God is ultimately the impersonal Brahman was the classical Hindu view. I believe was not the original view and is now only a minority view, so I think it is dubious to say it is the classical view. Classification should be done to exactly define the hindu calendar

The main classification has to be done on 'Aaryan' and 'Dravidian' basis. Because remember that the calendars divided According to the two cultures far before the birth of vedic MahaBharat. So I would like to suggest the one who is working on this article to try this way. The Southern and Northern part of hindus have different festivals at different times, though they have many in common. If you proceed keeping this in mind I hope you can be there at no time. Commentators and scholars

The article text is highly POV, and the content dubious and exaggerated. The author is falsely claiming that Adi Shankarcharya was the first Hindu Philosopher and the first one to consolidate the principles of the Advaita Vedanta ! Adi Shankarcharya lived in the 8th century AD whereas even before his time there were many Hindu Philosphers like Charwaka, Chanakya, Buddha, Mahavira, Nagarjuna, Shri Krishna etc. I would suggest the author cite reliable sources Indiawale (talk) 05:50, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

I am not able to understand. When did Buddha, Mahavira, and Nagarjuna become Hindu philosphers. And Sri Krishna? Do you mean Lord Krishna?--Sankarrukku (talk) 11:42, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

User Sankarrukku, yes I mean Lord Sri Krishna who told the Gita and explained philosophy much before Adi Shankarcharya. Vyasa included the Gita in the Maharabharata when he wrote it down. As per the Supreme Court of India's ruling in Manohar Joshi's case Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life http://www.hindubooks.org/scj/ch19.htm . Buddha, Mahavira and Nagarjuna do belong to the Hindu family. This is similiar to Jesus Christ being a Jew and not a Christian, since the Christian religion was founded after Jesus Christ. Indiawale (talk) 16:24, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Which article are you talking about? Thanks. Ism schism (talk) 17:16, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

I am taking about the article 'List of Hindu scriptures.' I need to tag this as POV. Indiawale (talk) 05:16, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

List of Hindu scriptures doesn't say that Adi Shankara was the first Hindu philosopher; only that he was the "first Hindu philosopher who consolidated the principles of the Advaita Vedanta philosophy in his writings" (Note: no comma betwen first and who). This is arguably true, but neverthesless I have removed "first" as unnecessary in that list. Abecedare (talk) 05:21, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

You did a smart thing by removing 'first' because he was most certainly NOT the first. I have more issues with this article that I would be pointing out. Since I don't agree with you and the two of us don't have a concensus here, I think this article should be marked as POV. You had done the same thing in the past on a different article! So we should use common standards in terms of marking the article as POV. Indiawale (talk) 06:11, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Indiawale, attack the content and not the editor. You cannot add POVs by saying that so and so editor "the same thing in the past on a different article!" Can you prove and mention the opposing POVs, from WP:RS? Absence of Concensus is also not a valid reason to mark articles as POV.--Nvineeth (talk) 07:24, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the input, so can I assume that the Absence of Concensus is also not a valid reason to mark articles as POV? Can Nvineeth and Abecedare Please confirm this? Also if you note, I had never marked this article as POV, I was only proposing it based on what was orginally written in the article. Once the author modified the article, I did not mark this as POV Indiawale (talk) 16:14, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Some background here. More eyes on any and all of these article are welcome. Abecedare (talk) 07:37, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Would a couple of text books on Philosophy do? But then again it is the author's POV. Some important philosophers like Kumarila Bhatta, Sankhya Muni are not in the list. Would be glad to help since I underwent a course in college on Indology couple of years back. The article is good. --Sankarrukku (talk) 11:42, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

The list is highly incomplete, so any help in expansion would be appreciated! I wonder though, if we need to create another List of Hindu philosophers (or something), instead of including these names in the List of Hindu scriptures. Is there such a list already ? Any suggestions on appropriate naming ? Abecedare (talk) 11:50, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
The editors of this article have a made very good efforts; and IMHO, its very tough to include a complete list of scriptures. I would like to create category called Category:Enoch in order to re-organize the material in the Enoch series. (e/c) I imagine that you could just start adding the category to relevant articles (WP:BEBOLD maybe?), but of course there is no guarantee that the category would remain if other editors disagreed. Are there other, similar categories already in existence for Biblical figures? I tried looking for some, but my already sparse religious knowledge seems to have deserted me! You could try looking through the sub-categories under Wikipedia:Categorical_index#Religion_and_belief_systems for a precedent.
For discussion, perhaps the best place to begin might be the talk page of Wikiproject Religion, or alternatively the talk page of one of the articles mentioned at Enoch (I wasn't sure which Enoch you meant), although a discussion there may not get as many contributors. --Kateshortforbob 20:52, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

1. Brijeshwari Devi - Left Breast - Kangara Himachal Pradesh 2. Mansa Devi - Forehead - Chandigarh 3. HarSiddhi- hand joint bones - Ujjain 4. Kalka - - Delhi

Rishi Bhatnagar - Delhi

Actually there is a lot discrepancy in this listing, I suggest if we can find an authentic textual source that mentions all the Shaktipeeths as with Jyotirlingas. Also many smaller shrines claim to be Shaktipeeths now, and the list would grow in the coming years, as more local devotees, create feverish articles about them. --Ekabhishek (talk) 12:03, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Hinduism and Science - A School Project

Also, please note that a couple of antagonistic editors have been interfering in these students' work, and so an assistance with this would also be appreciated. Most notably, one of these editors has merged the new article with "Karma in Hinduism," which has led to a number of anachronisms. Thank you.Vote Cthulhu (talk) 01:58, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

I looked at the version of the article that User:Andyjsmith redirected, and have to agree with him that it was POV OR, besides falling foul of wikipedia's policies on sourcing, soapboxing and fringe claims. At least parts of the article also violated legal copyright requirements, as they were copied from Hinduism and science by T.D. Singh, which (at best) is released under an incompatitple non-commercial license.
Given that at least one other articles created by the school project, Islam and civil rights, has been problematic, perhaps you all should slow down and familiarize yourself with wikipedia's content policies before creating any new articles. By the way, which school are these students from and who is the responsible teacher ? Abecedare (talk) 03:38, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
This article was being edited by a number of students. The copvio was raised and was in the process of being fixed when it was erroneously moved. Since then, others have tried to add further details on Hinduism and Science, but their edits were redirected to Karma in Hinduism, and ended up looking anachronistic. There is a single editor who has moved for merges and deletions of articles here. Each article was labeled with the "under construction" tag, which was ignored by the editor in question. From wikipedia article on Ashvamedha

The article says: The chief queen then has to mimic copulation with the dead horse.

However, below is the actual traslation of one of the Sanskrit verses from yajur veda that has been mistranslated to give it sexual connotations.

tau ubhau chaturah padah samprasarayava swarga lokam prasuvava vrshavaaji raghu rathau dadati

Yajur Veda 23/20

tau = we two ; ubhau = both ; chaturah = intelligent ; padah = subject ; samprasarayava = reach out ; swarga lokam = heavenly planet ; prasuvava = command ; vrshavaaji = horse ; raghu = Lord ; rathau = chariots ; dadati = provides

Translation: We both command the intelligent horse as our subject to reach out for heaven (where) the Lord provides (us) the chariots. The real meaning here is that by performing Ashwamedha yajna, one can get the blessings (written as chariots) of the heavenly King, Indra. [emphasis mine]

The other verses that have been misunderstood in this context can be find in the follwing link as a rebuttal to article on Women in Hinduism.

Vinod, If I am understanding the issue correctly, you are disputing the authenticity and translation of some Yajurveda verses sourced from works by Griffith and Keith, and are citing a blog post by a 24 year old engineer as your source. Sorry, but that will get you nowhere on wikipedia. See our policies on verifiability and reliable sources, including the narrow circumstances in which self-published sources and blogs can be considered reliable. You will be much better off searching for scholarly literature on the subject instead, to see if it supports your point. Also, while it is appropriate to use this noticeboard to bring an issue to the attention of a wider audience, subsequent article-specific discussion is best continued on Talk:Ashvamedha. Suryavanshi redirect

I propose that the Suryavanshi article should redirect to Suryavansha. "Suryavansha" refers to the clan/dynasty, whereas "Suryavanshi" refers to a member of this dynasty. It makes more sense for the main article to be named after the dynasty itself rather than the adjective describing a member of it. Having it the other way is like redirecting the America article to American. Please discuss on the article's talk page. Thanks. --Shruti14 talksign 01:25, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

article: bhima

There seems to be a conflict in progress re article bhima, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhima

user http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bugboy52.40 has simply replaced the entire article with a one liner on moths

any of the older users have any thoughts on how to deal with this?

apologies if this has already been noticed —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.79.203.43 (talk) 11:18, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi re my earlier message above - have replaced the old bhima article and created a new stub article for the moth article

hopefully, bugboy will not delete this edit! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sinhat (talkcontribs) 11:50, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Hindu Idealism page

The idea that Ramana Maharshi is not mentioned on that page, yet Ananda Marga and Nisargdatta Maharaj are mentioned without him, is simply wacky. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.121.239.113 (talk) 01:28, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Panchamrut/Panchamrit

I noticed today, Panchamrit can be spelt in various ways such as Panchaamrit, Panchaamrut, Panchamrut, Panchamrit, Panchamrita, Panchamruta to name a few. I have noticed two articles Panchamrut and Panchamrita, which deal with the same subject.I myself created a new article Panchaamrutam which I subsequently put up for deletion as its a repetition. Panchamrut and Panchamrita should be merged. And I dont know how to raise the suggestion to merge them, I am pretty new at wikipedia. I didnt want to just copy from one article into another and put up a request for deletion, I thought it better to bring it to everyone's notice. Lilaac (talk) 19:57, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

I've merged them into Panchamrita, redirected Panchamrut there, and did some cleanup of non-notable and unnecessary material. Priyanath talk 20:33, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Kirtan/Sankirtan

Should Sankirtan be merged into Kirtan? Priyanath talk 20:05, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

I would say yes. The article on Kirtan has the option to have sections for different types, and if there is something specific to be said about how a particular sect does it, it could be noted in that way. The word कीर्तनं literally means just "telling, narrating", "praising, celebrating" (Apte p. 782) and the variety of ways of doing that is not reflected in the Sankirtan article. I assume that the prefix सं (with, together with, accompanied by) does not really result in a semantic difference, but perhaps I am wrong about that. Buddhipriya (talk) 05:07, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
These are different things - in Gaudiya Vaishnava theology terms - also sankirtan has no meaning in Sikhism, whereas Kirtan does and is the main feature of Sikhism. It is not a dictionary (while word in itself is important) - it is about the usage. I will have to look at Sankirtan article to get some references to it, it looks weak to me. Wikidas© 10:06, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
The kirtan article does not the Hinduism side. Kirtan was an important tool to propagate the Varkari faith in Maharashtra, used first by Namdev. Interestingly, Namdev to Punjab and his hymns in Punjabi are recorded in the Sikh Bible - Guru Granth Sahib.--Redtigerxyz Talk 05:33, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
IMO merge samkirtan in Kirtan. --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:35, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
I've found several other sects/schools which use sankirtan as a term for devotional chanting, synonymous with kirtan. It's clearly not unique to Gaudiya Vaishnavism. See Sivananda[18], Yogananda[19], Sai Baba [20], and even Christian sankirtan in Kolkata in 1879 (!)[21]. Having a separate sankirtan article just for the Gaudiya Vaishnava use would be something of a POV fork. To my surprise, I found a unique use of the term in ISKCON, where it is sometimes used to mean 'book distribution'.[22][23][24]. I don't think that usage is notable enough to include in the article — I only mention it here because it's the only unique use of the term I could find from a Gaudiya Vaishnava perspective. These two articles should be merged into Kirtan. Priyanath talk 18:21, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
Merge - I agree with buddhipriya that sankirtan appears to be only a part of speech. Of course, a merge will cause a redirect, so the word "sankirtan" will not disappear and perhaps someone can source a statement on its usage and insert it on the kirtan page. As far as I am aware, the bookselling aspect is unique to ISKCON: it just happens they sell books and chant on the street at the same time: that can also be explained on a merged page if sourced. Above all, the beautiful upsurge in popular devotion in India c1400-1500 should not be obscured by sect-divisions when it is known to be a continuity between sects - witness importance of Kabir (Muslim name) to Sikhs and Hindus, notice that Sikh brotherhood and Baula brotherhood open equally to Hindus and Muslims. That's something India can be proud of and can teach the world today - breaking it up in wiki is an intrinsic falsification of the history of kirtan, bhajan, qawwali, the poet-gurus... Namdev is a case in point - certainly, with a name like that! Please add him, redtiger. Redheylin (talk) 23:56, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

I support a merger too. As Buddhipriya notes कीर्तनं literally means just "telling, narrating", "praising, celebrating" in Sanskrit, and कीर्तन is the term for devotional singing in Hindi. There are several derivatives of this root word, sankirtan, harikirtan, namkirtan that describe/emphasize particular types or aspects of the singing, which should be covered in the basic kirtan article. The practice is prevalent and important in Sikhism, Sufism and Hinduism (especially in bhakti, being one of the nine modes) - and relegating "Bhakti in Hinduism" to sankirtan doesn't make any sense. Abecedare (talk) 01:37, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

BTW can anybody explain why we need four articles; Bhakti, Bhakti yoga, Bhakti movement and Hindu devotional movements?? Redheylin (talk) 00:18, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Very good point. Hindu devotional movements should surely be merged into Bhakti movement, at least anything in the former that isn't Original Research. I think Bhakti movement, as a historical movement, deserves its own article separate from the others (Bhakti, Bhakti yoga). Just my opinion, and not a strong or especially well informed one. As far as Bhakti and Bhakti yoga — as they stand now, I'm all for merger into Bhakti. Could Bhakti yoga eventually be made into its own article? Maybe, but why not merge them first, and break out the article if the section grows too big. There's nothing there right now that warrants its own article. Just my opinion (one I've been thinking about while helping to rewrite Bhakti). Priyanath talk 02:56, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
See also Three stages of Bhakti - Kripa (philosophy). There's something to be said for treating the mediaeval movement separately, but note there's also a lot of Sant related pages that overlap a lot. Redheylin (talk) 04:58, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Per consensus here, I've merged Sankirtan into Kirtan. Priyanath talk 19:35, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

User:Mr.Z-man has a new service available to various requesting WikiProjects which gives the project a monthly update of the number of hits on the 1,000 most frequently accessed articles for that project. An example of such a listing can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Christianity/Popular pages. Would the members of this project be interested in getting such a list for their use? John Carter (talk) 18:46, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Love to see such a page. Would help us improve on those key articles.--Redtigerxyz Talk 04:01, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
It would be helpful but the most popular articles related to Hinduism may not be the most important. I think many 21st century "gurus", "swamis" and the like will be more popular than topics traditionally considered more relevant to Hinduism. GizzaDiscuss © 14:33, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
Yes – I'm interested in seeing this (but Gizza brings up a good point). [sd] 23:27, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
I think people will find that articles relevant to Hinduism are generally more popular than modern guru articles. Here is some evidence, showing number of hits for the month of May for: karma (109,734)[25], Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (9,826)[26], Adi Shankara (13,629)[27], Ganesha (48,722)[28], Bhagavad Gita (57,341)[29], Ram + Rama (since both go to the same article) (160,000+)[30][31]. Priyanath talk 19:50, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Yes there is no need to fear 21st century gurus, there are not many... most popular ones are from 20th century... Will be a very useful tool. Great idea. --Wikidas© 22:06, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Haha, I meant 20th/21st century gurus. The point is this tool will probably show these gurus (and their teachings, books perhaps) very high when other articles, (eg. Vedas, Puranas, other old Hindu history) will be very low. These articles should still be the long-term focus even though they are not popular. There is some overlap of course though. I expect important article like the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Shiva etc. to be high up. GizzaDiscuss © 06:10, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

John Carter has requested Mr.Z-man to add the WikiProject. The results will be posted sometime this month. [sd] 23:19, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

The results are in. I've copied the ten most popular Hinduism-related articles to the right, emphasizing those with top- or high-importance to our project. By the way, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is 134th, Adi Shankara is 76th, Ganesha is 22nd, Bhagavad Gita is 17th, Rama is 33rd, Ramayana is 29th, History of Hinduism is 154th, the Vedas are 28th, and the Puranas are 135th. Thanks, [sd] 16:14, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
Thank you - this will be very helpful. Priyanath talk 23:34, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for that Sd. Lol, some of my "predictions" came true. George Harrison is sixth, but shouldn't really be our focus. Neither is Buddha (2nd, duty of WP:BUDDHA), Gandhi (1st, only perhaps one section on religious views, otherwise Indian history). Swastika is skewed because of its (in)famous Nazi associtions. Aum is the first dominant though not exclusive Hinduism article (important in other Indian religions). Karma is similar. So the main purely Hinduism articles that are most popular are probably Shiva, Bhagavad Gita, Krishna and Vishnu.
I suppose I was wrong about the modern gurus though. Swami Vivekenanda and Sai Baba are the most popular. And why is Koh-i-Noor included? GizzaDiscuss © 12:13, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
It appears that any article tagged with WikiProject:Hinduism shows up on the list, so of course there will be some articles (like George Harrison) that aren't directly relevant. No biggie. Reading the Koh-i-Noor article, there is a legend of it being in Krishna's hands at one point, something I had never heard, which is probably why it was tagged with WikiProject:Hinduism. But overall, the list gives a very good idea of the popularity of the main and important Hinduism articles. Priyanath talk 16:29, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Pageview stats

After a recent request on my talk page, I added WikiProject Hinduism to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Hinduism/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. I can also get provide the full data for any project covered by the bot if requested, though I normally don't keep it for much longer than a couple weeks after the list is generated. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 04:31, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

More Sections to be added to Hinduism portal

I suggest that the following sections may be considered for addition under the Hinduism portal: 1.Vedic Chants for all four Vedas 2.Upanishad Recitations for all 108 upanishads starting with the Mukhya Upanishads 3.Oral discourses on the various Puranas- starting from Shrimadbhagwat and Bhagwadgita 4.Karmakand vidhi vidhan - detailed procedures to be followed with chants and mantrocchar for all pujas, samskars, ceremonies and rituals. 5.Direct puja time access to various religious sites- the 4 dhams, 12 jyotirligas, the Shaktipeeths, Ganeshpeeths etc. It can be live coverage of pujas and pravachans. 6.Texts of all important hindu scriptures- the Vedas, Samhitas, Brahmans, Aranyaks, the Upanishads, the Puranas Gita, Ramayan etc. with well respected commentries and bhashyas. 7.If possible add videos of pilgrimage to various thirthas and of Ramayan and Mahabharat etc. 8. Add sub sections on various Hindu sects 9. Add a section each on the religions originating in India viz.,Jainism, Budhdhism,Sikhism etc. 10.Sections of Vedic Jyotish, Vedic Maths, Vastu Shastra, Ayurveda etc. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Barauri (talk ```` contribs) 08:40, 11 June 2009 (UTC) ````barauri 2.20PM 11 June 2009

The Hinduism portal is meant to be simple. All Wikipedia portals follow a similar structure. The page will become too big. However, we can add some of your suggestions within the current sections. We can rotate more article and include the Upanishads, Samhitas, Puranas as you say.
But even more importantly, we should improve these articles on Wikipedia, should we not? Ganesha is a more than decent article (with WP:FA status) and all other major article should eventually be up to the same standard. GizzaDiscuss © 09:55, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Further, the hindu way of life is built on yajnas and samskars, for each of these there is a well defined puja.It will be a great contribution of wiki when hindus interested in performing a particular puja archana look upto its Hinduism portal for authentic reference and detailed guideline. Similarly, for the Pujas performed at the various thirthas and devasthans. A comprehensive portal will be big draw. Barauri (talk) 10:20, 11 June 2009 (UTC) The four dhams include: Sringeri, Badrinath, Puri and Dwarka The 12 jyotirlingas include: Somnath, Mahakaleswara, Bhimashankara, Triyambakeshwara, Ramnatheswara,Baidyanath, Omkareshwara, Mallikarjuna, Kedarnath, Vishweswara,Grishmeshwara, and Nageswara. Hundreds of thousands of devotees visit Tirupati Balaji, Prayagraj, Haridwar, Benaras, Mathura, Ayodhya, Amarnath, Vaishnodevi and a number of other shrines/ tirthas every year. Millions congregate at the Kumbha melas. Any portal on Hinduism will be incomplete without a page on each tirtha. Barauri (talk) 10:51, 11 June 2009 (UTC) I believe a portal has to be exhaustive. Already we have a large number of pages on wiki which can be easily linked to the portal and thus brought to one place in a well structured manner. We may for instance bring all pages relating to hindu gods, devatas, devies, rishies and gurus under appropriates headings on this portal. Similarly, references to all pages relating to hindu shrines, thirthas, temples, peeths etc. and all scriptures and religious texts can also be brought on to the portal. Structure of Hinduism portal

There are enough pages already on wiki to put together in the form of a comprehensive portal on Hinduism. The main headings under which one can look up for material on Hinduism in my humble view can be : 1. Scriptures 2. Dieties 3. Practices 4. Holy Places 5. Disciplines 6. Holy Persons 7. Sects 8. Concepts 9. Festivals 10.Temples 11.Library I have tried to bring together various wiki pages under these heads on an excel sheet. I am so sorry that the excel sheets could not be pasted as a large table that I have put together on my desktop. It goes without saying that each heading and sub heading will branch out in the form of a large banyan tree of pages on Hinduism. We may also bring together all other Hinduism related sites - many of them very rich in many ways, under a seperate heading. Being new I am still to familiarise myself with wiki editing. However, I do trust that this small effort will generate discussion leading to an early restructuring of the portal as the main reference source for all those interested in Hinduism. Barauri (talk) 05:04, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

A wikipedia portal is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of articles on the topic, but is supposed to highlight the best-written and the top-level articles on the subject - analogous to the wikipedia main page in design and purpose.
So I don't think listing a few hundred article links on the portal will serve the reader. However, your effort in coming up with the proposed scheme is appreciated and it is possible that I am misunderstanding your idea. Why don't you develop a sample page in your userspace, so that we can understand it better ? Let me know if you need any help in getting started. Abecedare (talk) 05:19, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
Barauri, thank you for your ideas. Abecedare mentioned a portal may not be the best place for links to those articles. If you want an exhaustive listing of Hinduism-related articles that is organized into headings and subheadings, please improve the outline of Hinduism. On the other hand, if you wish to create an alphabetical listing of Hinduism-related articles, create an index. Happy editing, [sd] 16:06, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
