Orel Hershiser in 1993

In 1988, Orel Hershiser set the record in Major League Baseball for consecutive scoreless innings pitched. The Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher's streak of 59 innings spanned from the sixth inning of an August 30 game against the Montreal Expos to the tenth inning of a September 28 game against the San Diego Padres, not counting eight scoreless innings he pitched to start Game 1 of the 1988 National League Championship Series on October 4. The previous record of 58 23 innings was set by former Dodger pitcher Don Drysdale in 1968; as the team's radio announcer, Drysdale called Hershiser's streak as he pursued the new record. Following the regular season, Hershiser was awarded the National League Cy Young Award. In the playoffs, he earned both the National League Championship Series Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) and the World Series MVP Award. He also secured Sportsman of the Year and Associated Press Athlete of the Year honors. He continued to be an effective pitcher for many seasons, making two additional appearances in the World Series and winning the 1995 American League Championship Series MVP Award. (Full article...)

Almond Blossoms

Almond Blossoms is an 1890 painting by Vincent van Gogh of blossoming almond trees made to celebrate the birth of his nephew and namesake, son of his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo. It is part of a series of similar paintings completed in Arles and Saint-Rémy, southern France. The works reflect impressionist, divisionist and Japanese woodcut influences.
