Hi Wavehunter, thanks for cleaning up the Max Gottschalk prose, and I will be trying to add more photos that I have taken from some other collectors here in Portland, OR which I am releasing to the public domain, and I will change the rights on the photos in the galleries to that, since they are photos I took of furniture pieces I own. I will also read all your references to writing better articles at the top of your talk page. Thanks for being polite and for your gentle hand in editing - I've run into a lot of "hack & slash" jobs on articles when I don't have a lot of time to work on this stuff. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. Proposed deletion of Topographic name

Gondola modifications and citations

I added the additional citations, though some of it (es.: the addition of "flat-bottomed") came straight from the Italian version, which considering the subject, I think is the more definitive.

Also the removal of the floating "Gondolier's guild headquarters" has no substance, and the address (and phone number, which DOES exist), is listed on the official site that was already cited.

The removal of the references as water-taxi and motorized gondolas are also because they are unsubstantiated, and in direct conflict to the Italian version, which speaks of the popularity of the gondola "... until the diffusion of motorized water transport", and not the motorization of the gondola, which doesn't exist.

My references to the gondolier's guild were already referenced.

If there were other points which seem "original research" to you, please let me know so I can provide references (which may be available only in Italian, again pretty reasonably so considering it is an Italian subject in an Italian city).

• Thanks for this, Old Jacques. It seems you have added references to the gondola page but not the watercraft rowing page. Reading some of the guidelines, citing other Wikipedia pages - even in other languages - is discouraged (to put it mildly). That's because Wikipedia cannot be authoritative unless it cites external sources that are themselves authoritative. If the Italian article is unreferenced, then the English article is unreferenced too. Referencing external sources in English is best for the English Wikipedia, but if these cannot be found then sources in other languages are acceptable.   • The watercraft rowing page I modified with references already cited in my modifications. The references to the "standing position", for example, not for which I didn't reference directly, were documented in the already cited and clearly illustrated (not my modification) reference on Voga alla Veneta "venetia.it". They were just what I considered a clearer description, reading the article, even though I know Gondolas from first-hand experience (which I wasn't citing, in this case). What additional references would you consider necessary at this point? Would print references be more authoritative/better? In that case Italian language sources (probably Venetian dialect) would be the only authoritative "direct" sources for something so Venetian. Thanks for the input.     • I think I see where the confusion lies. You had inserted hotlinks to external webpages (www.vogaveneta.it and www.venetia.it). I have converted these into references. Please take a look and check that they are what you want. I am not an Italian speaker and cannot verify that they say what they are meant to say, but they certainly appear appropriate enough. Mariano Rajoy, Prime minister - desginate

Hi,

As general elections in Spain designate the congressmen and not the prime minister (who is elected by the congressmen, not by the people), I'm afraid that, as to date, the "prime minister - designate" title is wrong (although is 100% sure Mariano Rajoy will be elected prime minister). 62.83.105.235 (talk) 10:41, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

• I think what you say is probably right. Rajoy's party won most seats and should be in a position to form the next government, most likely with Rajoy leading it. However, I did not add Rajoy or the Prime Minister designate title to the Spain page: that was Therequiembellishere. Also, Wikipedia defines a Prime Minister-designate as someone expected to take office, and accepts the term is misleading. Since we agree that Rajoy will probably be the next Prime Minister of Spain, I think I will leave the page as it stands. Thank you, though, for bringing this to my attention. European Parliament election, 2009 (United Kingdom)

Hi could you possibly make a graph for the opinion polling section of the 2009 European Elections, the same as you have done for 2012 in Opinion polling for the next United Kingdom general election. With the one change to the key as described on [talk page]. There are only 16 polls so this hopefully shouldn't take you too long. Charts for Opinion polling for the next United Kingdom general election

In the end I decided to spend hours going through each individual poll and dissecting UKIP from the Others so that we could have a complete graph spanning the whole of the Parliament. I have replaced your graph for the time being with a very basic version. However it was fairly unanimously decided that your graph was the best (I agree). Could I therefore ask you to extend your graph and re-upload it? It shouldn't take you too long, it's all in the right format ready for you, the hard bit has been done. Could you also make sure the Chart has a tittle, preferably "Opinion Polling for the 2015 United Kingdom Election". Also since there is plenty of space could you make sure that the key at the bottom has the full names of "Conservative", "Labour", "Lib Dem", "UKIP" and "other". I would really appreciate your help on this, your table looks so much better than mine, it's just not got enough detail on it yet.

To use the data, you will need to copy it via the edit page. As you can see it does not appear in table format on here but it does if you look on the edit page. You can simply copy this and attach it to the data in the existing tables.

Many-sorted logic

Hi, thanks for your corrections! (I changed "my\ favorite\ oak" back to "my_favorite_oak", since identifiers are usually composed of letters, digits, and "_", but not " ".)

I'm not glad with the current article text either. Do you think it would be helpful to say that many-sorted logic is like ordinary predicate logic, but with types (called "sorts" by the logicians) as programming languages usually have? I'll also try to give a more explicit example about what can be done with many-sorted logic.

Hi Jochen. I'm sure you're right to change the identifier as you describe (though I've reinstated the backslashes to enable the browser to parse this). As for making the article understandable to lay people, I think the introduction is the key. To me it is quite impenetrable. What is logic? (To most people, I suggest, logic is just anything that makes sense. That's logical!) What is 'ordinary predicate logic'? I think that as things stand one might need a degree in mathematics (or philosophy?) to get through this article. Sorry I can't help. Do we need to call for an expert to intervene? First Championship goal

Hi, I have re-added Danny Ings as the first goalscorer of the season with a reference showing that the Football League (correctly) decided to award the goal to him a couple of days after the match. He is credited with the goal in the top goalscorers list, which says he has scored two (other was against Sheffield Wednesday the week after). Either way, Darren Pratley very definitely scored the second league goal of the season by anybody's definition, because if Ings didn't then the first goal of the season was an own goal. I had taken my info from the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23474674 but the Football League is obviously more authoritative on this subject. Opinion polling for the next United Kingdom general election

I see you have rounded the Populus monthly summary result to 0dp. Fair enough, as this is how polls are normally reported, and fits in with the Wiki page standards, but it has introduced a rounding anomaly. The Tory vote at 32.5 should normally be rounded up to 33, Labour rounded down to 37%, but the lead at 4.6% should remain at 5%. This looks anomalous, but is correct (just as the "others" figure will sometimes take the total over 100%).

The figures to 1dp were taken from the FT article, however the tables at http://www.populus.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/OmOnline_Vote_February_2014.pdf only give 0dp as usual for polls so maybe we should stick to their figures (see p36 on) where the lead would be calculated arithmetically on the rounded figures as 4%?

Hi FraLiss. What's happened is that you have removed another reference in the introduction (to MCN Biografias). This reference was used multiple times. On the first occasion it was named as "Garcia" but since you took out that first reference, later references are searching for Garcia and not finding it. I don't know if you meant to remove that reference in the introduction. If you did, you could change another of the Garcia references from <ref name=Garcia/> to <ref name=Garcia>{{Cite web|url=http://www.mcnbiografias.com/app-bio/do/show?key=garcia-de-moguer-diego|title=Moguer Garcia, Diego (ca. 1495-ca. 1535).|language=Spanish|accessdate=24 June 2013|publisher=Mcnbiographicas.com}}</ref>. I could not see much about Garcia de Moguer in your reference - it seemed to relate instead to Andre Higino. Since I'm not sure what you're trying to do I'm not sure how to help. I think your categorisation of my editing as unacceptable is neither fair nor helpful. The redirect was in the wrong direction, so I corrected it. The Wikipedia manual of style is clear about proper names needing to be in proper case, and titles needing to follow the same format. (See WP:TV-NAME and WP:TITLEFORMAT for the rule. See La Marca del Deseo, La Tormenta, La Teacher de Inglés, La Viuda de la Mafia and La Hija del Mariachi for examples.) Hey Wavehunter! Back in 2014 you added a clarify tag to the following sentence in Logan's Run (TV series)#Cancellation: The series initially had solid ratings but CBS constantly pre-empted the show which caused the series to lose much of its audience.

Leads in UK General Election polling tables

Hi, surely lead should be maintained in % as figures are given in percentage on the table not PP. Given the lead is the difference between the 2 leading parties then for example 50% (0.5) - 28% (0.28) would be 22% (0.22) which is more mathamtically correct than 22. If we're to give leads in PP then the figures for parties should also be given in PP otherwise its inconsistent. EnglishPoliticalPerson (talk) 13:17, 16 March 2023 (UTC)

Hello EnglishPoliticalPerson. The difference between one percentage and another is measured in percentage points (PP). An example: if support for the Labour Party is 40% and for the Conservatives is 20%, then Labour has a 20 percentage point lead. In this case there are twice as many Labour supporters than Tory supporters. So, if we measure that as a percentage, it is 100%. Labour support is 100% more than Conservative support because 40 is 100% bigger than 20.
