Quick guidebook edit

Before an aircraft is cleared for pushback, there must be fuel, passengers, and meals ready, as well as cleanliness and all pre-flight checklists done. Kinda the same thing with Wikipedia.

Hey there, TheLAXPlanespotter! Both being aviation enthusiasts, welcome to Wikipedia, an artificial satellite of Earth. Wikipedia should be a fun place for all editors, and if you have any problems with the system or group of contributors, please vent it to anyone available (including me) so that the problem can be resolved. Here are some of the basic rules you should know to get started.

  • Notability — Notability determines whether an article is deemed Wikipedia-worthy or not. To achieve the general notability checklist, one must have significant coverage from multiple reliable, secondary sources independent to the subject. Primary sources may be cited, but RSS sources must be available. There are some topics which has its own notability guideline, so check them out, but generally the GNG is a rule of thumb.
  • The other policies and guidelines — There are a ton of policies and guidelines on Wikipedia, and this is where things can get a bit frustrating. A lot of people love the policies, so when one gets reverted because of them, please don't take things personal, and talk with the other editor as well as learn the referenced policy. Experiences are the best method of learning the huge— and I mean huge— pyramid of policies here.
    • You can ignore (all) rules — There are times when policies just don't make sense, and this "policy" gives you a violation pass... sort of. Policies that you certainly must adhere to without excuses are the non-free content policy and the 3RR rule, etc. When thinking on ignoring a rule(s), consider whether it is sensical and improves the encyclopedia. If yes, then do it, or suggest it, per WP:IAR?.
  • Civility — Civility is a very important rule when interacting with others. Often discussions can get heated, or a user just annoys you. It is important to be civil when discussing, so that a problem can be solved without divisiveness inter-parties. Many discussions have went astray due to incivility.
  • Assume good faith — Assuming good faith in other editors is important. If you see an edit that looks suspicious, do not immediately judge the editor, calling them "foolish" "stupid" "violating rules" etc. Instead, properly undo the edit (IF APPROPRIATE), and/or talk/discuss with the editor. It can be a good learning experience for both of you, and it makes for a better environment within Wikipedia.
  • Be bold — If you see a problem on a Wikipedia article and you feel like it, fix it! Be bold in contributing is highly regarded and respected. However often bold, brave edits can be unintentionally wrong and can be reverted. If so, as stated above, "please don't take things personal, and talk with the other editor as well as learn the referenced policy."
  • There are a ton of essays made by Wikipedians that may help, though is not mandatory. See Essay directory to search for essays.

In Wikipedia, you act like an air traffic controller: patrolling, managing, while also having fun. There's also a break, and it's indefinite!

I hope you have a great time here, because that's what we want you to experience! Based on your data, here are some subplaces you can follow:

Again, happy editing, and Merry Christmas if you're celebrating... will celebrate. GeraldWL 16:17, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
