Election box templates

User Neveselbert has modified several election box templates. As these are used on tens of thousands of pages I feel that some sort of consensus should be required to do so. I can't revert most of them so was wondering if you could? These ones in particular:

• Template:Election box total
• Template:Election box turnout

Well, it would seem unlikely that a self revert will occur or even for a proper discussion to happen. The user is now inferring that I'm accusing them of bad faith, which I most certainly have not. I suggest now that an admin should revert the changes per WP:CYCLE which hopefully could start a more constructive dialogue. Kiwichris (talk) 01:41, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

Kiwichris, I have been at Totaranui for the last couple of days; no cell coverage. I suggest that you put your reason why you disagree with at least one aspect of the changes to Neveselbert; stay calm even if you get accused of bad faith. That will move it from maintenance to controversial, and as soon as it's disputed, the edit can be reversed (for interest, have a read of WP:TPEREVOKE). Given that I've been WP:INVOLVED, the reverting shouldn't come from me. Maybe involve Primefac as they have only just granted template editor rights to Neveselbert. Guideline and policy news

• Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
• Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
• The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
• The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.

Technical news

• There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

Arbitration

• The Arbitration Committee is considering a change to the discretionary sanctions procedures which would require an editor to appeal a sanction to the community at WP:AE or WP:AN prior to appealing directly to the Arbitration Committee at WP:ARCA.

Miscellaneous

• A discussion has closed which concluded that administrators are not required to enable email, though many editors suggested doing so as a matter of best practice.
• The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team has released the Interaction Timeline. This shows a chronologic history for two users on pages where they have both made edits, which may be helpful in identifying sockpuppetry and investigating editing disputes.

Margi Robertson

Thank you for your help with the entry Margi Robertson. It has proven invaluable and I appreciate the time and attention that you devoted to the task. I am new to Wikipedia and still trying to get my head around the citation system. I noticed that you seem to suggest that I enter newspaper articles using the "manual" mode and then checking "news" for the template. I noticed that this gives a different format (or maybe I am doing something wrong) than checking "automatic" (last name first for example). Is it preferable to use the "automatic" function as opposed to the "manual function"? I have been using the "automatic" function for online sources and only entering these manually when the "automatic" function fails (generates a message saying that it cannot generate the citation automatically). I have been using the manual function only when the automatic function fails or when I am citing hardcopy. Do let me know if I am doing something wrong here. I am accustomed to a number of different referencing systems but find that this knowledge doesn't translate well into the Wikipedia environment. Yrarendar, welcome to WP and thank you for your contributions. Yes, it's a long and steep learning curve. I'm not familiar with the system of creating references that you describe, so I don't really know how that works. There are slight differences between template:cite web and template:cite news but if your system doesn't give you those options, then don't worry about it and keep doing what you are doing. Wikipedia is an exercise in collaboration; if it's not 100% right, somebody else can and (at least eventually) will fix it. Feel free to ask any questions you may have or for assistance with further articles. And a tip – it's easier for others if you wikilink relevant pages in talk page discussions (for example, I've edited your entry above so that the bio in question is linked). I was using another wikipeida page: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_authorities_of_New_Zealand) to glean information from the websites of all local authorities in NZ. Redirects

Why did you set up redirects for pages related to the 2018 Commonwealth Games? Its hard to tell now which articles need creating and also discourages editors from creating the article (as they would assume that the article exists). Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 18:48, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Ah, sorry, Sportsfan 1234. The "its hard to tell now which articles need creating" bit doesn't apply to my personal setup as I use linkclassifier. As a result, redirects show up as green for me instead of blue and I immediately see where they are. It had not occurred to me that there could be problems arising from having a redirect, e.g. discouraging editors from creating the article. The point of having a redirect is, of course, to guide readers to somewhere that gives some information that they are after. In this case, it points them to Cycling at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

It's super-handy and should be easy enough for you to install. I see that you don't have a Javascript page set up so you don't use these kinds of tools. Have a look at my setup. Of those, the DYK tool would probably not relevant to you (unless you do participate in DYK), and userRightsManager is something that is only applicable to admins. Leslie Andrew

Hi Schwede66, our paths have crossed a few times on NZ soldier biographies that have political elements. I was wondering if you may be able to assist with the Leslie Andrew article, which is presently undergoing a A-Class review at Milhist. One of the sources I used in expanding the article mentions that he was approached to run for parliament some time in the 1950s/1960s. Unfortunately the source doesn't say who approached him - I suspect it was the National Party but it would be good to confirm this. From an edit you made on the Reginald Judson article, I think you may have the book on the history of the National Party by Gustafson. Is there a possibility you could check this, or any other resources for which you may have ready access, to confirm who approached Andrew? It would be greatly appreciated. Zawed, I've checked Gustafson's book and Andrew doesn't appear in the index. It would have surprised me if he had been mentioned, though. The book covers 50 years, i.e. roughly 16 general elections and dozens of by-elections. With something like 70 electorates, that makes for talking to a lot of people who eventually won't stand in the election. I guess one day, news media from the 1950s/60s will have been digitised and that may reveal something, although those private conversations may not have become public. Either way, I see your GAs coming through by keeping an eye on article alerts and I'm rather impressed by your output. Well done. Schwede66 18:40, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

• The ability to create articles directly in mainspace is now indefinitely restricted to autoconfirmed users.
• A proposal is being discussed which would create a new "event coordinator" right that would allow users to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit.

Technical news

• AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new equals_to_any function can be used when checking multiple namespaces. One major upcoming change is the ability to see which filters are the slowest. This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash.
• When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.
• The block notice shown on mobile will soon be more informative and point users to a help page on how to request an unblock, just as it currently does on desktop.
• There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

• The Arbitration Committee is seeking additional clerks to help with the arbitration process.

Obituaries

• Lankiveil (Craig Franklin) passed away in mid-April. Lankiveil joined Wikipedia on 12 August 2004 and became an administrator on 31 August 2008. During his time with the Wikimedia community, Lankiveil served as an oversighter for the English Wikipedia and as president of Wikimedia Australia.

ACTRIAL:

• WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

• Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

• A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

• There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

• Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

• The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
• Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

• A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

• Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
• The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

Would you (or another experienced editor) be interested in getting the ball rolling with a RFC to lead to a policy change on NZ place name titles? I'm new to this, and have already posted quite a bit in an argument that seems to be just repeating itself. Guideline and policy news

• Following a successful request for comment, administrators are now able to add and remove editors to the "event coordinator" group. Users in the event coordinator group have the ability to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit. Users will no longer need to be in the "account creator" group if they are in the event coordinator group.
• Following an AN discussion, all pages with content related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies, broadly construed, are now under indefinite general sanctions.

Technical news

• IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
• The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
• There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
• It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.

Arbitration

• A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.

Miscellaneous

• In early May, an unusually high level of failed login attempts was observed. The WMF has stated that this was an "external effort to gain unauthorized access to random accounts". Under Wikipedia policy, administrators are required to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

It's a shame that...

The infobox on 1979 World Rowing Championships is so long (& wide) that it restricts the width of the men's event listing and causes all names (first & surnames) to split over two lines. Similar on 1975 World Rowing Championships although it's not quite so bad. Any clues on what to do ? Suppose if I had a a few lines of copy to add to the lead paragraph that would drop the events box, but I'm not sure what's interesting to say about these c'ships.Sticks66 09:05, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

@Sticks66: Well, the "problem" you raise is dependent on your screen size and the magnification that you set within your web browser. For example, looking at those articles on my iPhone, the ibox is entirely above the results tables. On my laptop, the ibox overlaps with the first results table but that doesn't cause any names to spill over two lines. But your thinking is correct; the best thing you could possibly do is to simply add some text. There is a lot that can be said about individual championships, see for example 1978 World Rowing Championships, 1990 World Rowing Championships (an issue for just one country), or 2010 World Rowing Championships. Many of the pre-1980s European Rowing Championships also have a lot of prose. Finding something about events in the 1970s or 1980s can be the tricky thing; the British blog Rowing Story is a good source. And although blogs are often regarded with scepticism by Wikipedians, this particular one is a quality source that I recommend. Schwede66 18:10, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

Re: Winston Peters "Vandalising"

In regards to your warning about "vandalising", I wish to justify the revertions made, and acknowledge having forgotten to do so in the revertions made to edits in the first place. I am aware this may have contributed to your concern. The edits I reverted removed the office held by Winston Peters that is "Acting Prime Minster of New Zealand", unnecessarily so. It should not have been removed and subsequently noted in his Deputy PM office for several reasons. There is precedent for such use, look to Helen Clark's article and see 'Acting Foreign Minister' is afforded a separate office. This is for a simple reason, because it is a separate office, as is Acting PM. Which is why it is wrong to note that Winston Peters is Acting PM in the office for Deputy PM, because it has nothing to do with the office of Deputy PM. It is afforded to he/she who is next in line (cabinet rankings). Winston does not hold the office of Prime Minister and it is therefore appropriate to maintain what was.
