Two different page names for Signpost pages

Hi--I am trying to straighten out the Signpost /subpages, and there seem to be half under WP:Wikipedia Signpost/ and half under WP:Signpost/. Since WP:Wikipedia Signpost is a move-protected page, wouldn't it make sense that all the subpages should be under that page, so that it would avoid double-redirects? Also, it would be easier to find the subpages while during a search. Would like to know what you think. Regards, --Funandtrvl (talk) 07:57, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

In case you need a little inspiration.

The art looks awesome. Words to live by...

"The people shall not be deprived or abridged of their right to speak, to write, or to publish their sentiments; and the freedom of the press, as one of the great bulwarks of liberty, shall be inviolable."

—Madison

"The Bill of Rights changed the original Constitution into a new charter under which no branch of government could abridge the people's freedoms of press, speech, religion, and assembly. Yet the Solicitor General argues and some members of the Court appear to agree that the general powers of the Government adopted in the original Constitution should be interpreted to limit and restrict the specific and emphatic guarantees of the Bill of Rights adopted later. I can imagine no greater perversion of history."

— Justice Black, NEW YORK TIMES CO. v. UNITED STATES, 403 U.S. 713 (1971)

"The press was to serve the governed, not the governors. The Government's power to censor the press was abolished so that the press would remain forever free to censure the Government. The press was protected so that it could bare the secrets of government and inform the people. Only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government. And paramount among the responsibilities of a free press is the duty to prevent any part of the government from deceiving the people and sending them off to distant lands to die of foreign fevers and foreign shot and shell."

— Justice Black, NEW YORK TIMES CO. v. UNITED STATES, 403 U.S. 713 (1971)

Web Design

Hi Pretzels. I notice you have been making changes to the web design page, currently the University of Hull are running a module which requires third year students to work in teams and improve the quality of some pages. One group are working on the web design page and have a discussion on its talk page. Perhaps you'd like to join in with the discussion and help the students improve both the page the way the edit pages. One of the most important parts of this module is to engage with the community so any communication positive or negative will be beneficial, thanks. WBClarkson (talk) 11:45, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Issue I - May 2012
Project news
  • the wub has been appointed as a Wikimedia Community Fellow to lead a data-driven improvement of the English Wikipedia's help documentation, and will be working closely with the Help Project. You can read more about his plans at Wikipedia:Help Project/Community fellowship or in this Signpost article, and he has just released a first report on progress so far.
  • The project's pages have had a major redesign, introducing tabs in order to make them more usable. If you haven't stopped by recently then check them out!
  • A table of statistics is now available for all pages in Category:WikiProject Help Project, this includes page views, word counts and a variety of readability scores. This should be helpful in prioritising improvement work and finding redundant pages.
  • {{Breadcrumb2}} is a new template for making attractive navigational breadcrumbs. This may be useful for linking help pages.
  • This newsletter was started :-)

Non-free rationale for File:UK Youth Parliament House of Commons 2009.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:UK Youth Parliament House of Commons 2009.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. An SOS from the Community portal

Hi Pretzels! I noticed that you contributed to the Community portal awhile back (I think your proposal to get rid of the extraneous help links was definitely worth a proper discussion, and it's a shame that it got dismissed). I'd really appreciate your input on a new discussion I just started on the talk page. Since the bot that used to update the open tasks has been MIA since February, I thought it was about time to talk about what purpose(s) that page is serving and how we can make it more useful. Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this :) Maryana (WMF) (talk) 18:37, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Hello from the Help Project, and welcome to the second issue of our newsletter!

The biggest project I've been working on this month has been a large survey of users to find out what they think of our current help pages. Preliminary results from this are now available, although there are more responses trickling in from the lower edit count groups since a batch of email invitations were recently sent out. Finalised results and further analysis should be posted next week.

Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Wikipedia:Help Project/Newsletter. If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name.

The Wikipedia Adventure: Request for feedback on Community Fellowship proposal

Hi! I'm contacting you because you have participated or discussed The Wikipedia Adventure learning tutorial/game idea. I think you should know about a current Community Fellowship proposal to create the game with some Wikimedia Foundation support. Your feedback on the proposal would be very much appreciated. I should note that the feedback is for the proposal, not the proposer, and even if the Fellowship goes forward it might be undertaken by presently not-mentioned editors. Thanks again for your consideration.

Project news summary
  • Final results and conclusions from the help pages survey were released.
  • The wub gave a presentation at Wikimania 2012 about help pages, and the slides are now on Commons.
  • A discussion is taking place about the purpose and future of the venerable Community portal.
  • New designs for tutorial pages have been proposed, comment from project members is welcome.
From the editor

Welcome to the (slightly delayed) third issue of the Help Project newsletter.

The past month has once again been a busy one for my fellowship. The full results and conclusions from the extensive user survey on help pages are now available, and make interesting reading. These do confirm a number of our suspicions about Wikipedia help, and suggest that the current plan for the remainder of the fellowship is a sound approach.

Also last month I was fortunate enough to attend Wikimania 2012 in Washington DC, where I gave a presentation about help pages and the aforementioned survey results. You can find the slides from this on Commons. Wikimania was also a great opportunity for many discussions with staff and community members, and these brought up some interesting ideas which I hope to follow up on.

One of the things much discussed was the planned tutorial pages. I've been working on a new design for them which can be seen at User:The wub/sandbox/1, please let me know what you think (especially if you spot any bugs!).

Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Wikipedia:Help Project/Newsletter. If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name.

WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

  1.   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
  2.   Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
  3.   Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with   Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Other contributors of note include:

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by   The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. edward snowden

nice work. hope Greenwald didn't get a total snowjob and this guy is legit. Decora (talk) 22:06, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

Seconded. The quotation box is a very nice addition, too. I am almost wondering if this wouldn't be an even better summarization of his impetus?
Anyway, great work, it's much appreciated. petrarchan47tc 23:10, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

hi "pretzels"- the "mass editing" came after someone listed unnecessary obscenities on the edward snowden page. you're welcome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.78.23.126 (talk) 18:54, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Hey Pretzel, you deserve a barnstar for your work so far on the Snowden article. I can't be bothered to look up the right template, so this will have to do for now. -- Hillbillyholiday talk 00:22, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

I noticed the message you recently left to 71.180.121.48. Please remember not to bite the newcomers. If you see someone make a common mistake, try to politely point out what they did wrong and how to correct it. Thank you. A warning was definitely required, but this was level 3 for a first offense. Per WP:BITING "Even if you are 100% sure that someone is a worthless, no-good Internet troll, vandal, or worse, conduct yourself as if they are not." —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 19:41, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks!

Hey, thanks for helping with the ref tags in the Edward Snowden article. Much appreciated.

Could you link to a wikipedia guide that shows the exact syntax for full ref tags? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fan.of.devin (talkcontribs) 22:25, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Edward Snowden, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Salon (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Proof of COI kindly delete your accusation.

Hey Pretzels! Cute name. Whatever -- I do NOT have a conflict of interest in the material concerning Edward Snowden. I do NOT HAVE a close connection with EDWARD SNOWDEN in any way shape or form. So kindly remove your yellow card.

I have met plenty of people on Wikipedia with a conflict of interest. So I know it when I see it.

And one more thing -- you better come with PROOF before you start accusing me of 'CONFLICT OF INTEREST' again. There is a great difference between having an interest, and a conflict of interest. So if you have any proof -- of your accusations, make it public. And it better be good. Otherwise, delete your yellow card. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.108.207.38 (talk) 19:49, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

Main page redesign

Would you be interested in working together in creating a real-working main page redesign based on your design and my framework? You design stood out in the redesign RFCs as the only viable option. In case you haven't been following the (lack of) progress, see Wikipedia talk:2013 main page redesign proposal#Next phase: Design criteria and guidelines and Talk:Main Page#Main page redesign. Discussion seems to stall every time, and I'm running out of ideas. If we could present a working example, then maybe the community could be swayed into accepting some much needed change! Motto of the Day Help Request April 2014

Motto of the Day (WP:MOTD) is in a state of emergency and really needs your help! There are not enough editors who are reviewing or nominating mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review, and this probably means that you will notice a red link or “This space for rent” as our mottos for the next weeks and months.

Please take a moment to review the nominations and nominate your own new mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review and Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/'Specials. Any help would be appreciated! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 09:13, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

This message has been sent by pjoef on behalf of Motto of the Day to all editors of the English Wikipedia who are showing MOTD's templates on their pages, and to all the participants to MOTD: (page, template, and category).
