Notability

Hi Paul,

Now that I'm done graverobbing... (thanks again - really! Sometimes Wikipedia editing may feel like a thankless task, so every little bit counts, right?)

I was wondering if you would help me in getting rid of the {{notability}} tag from some BLP articles on the D&D WikiProject? We only have 9 at the moment, but if you are willing to take a look for some sources, maybe we can reduce that number a bit?

If you have the time and inclination to take a look, the articles in question are: Brian Hagan, Chuck Whelon, Erin M. Evans, John Dollar, Josh Sawyer, Michael Phillippi, Newton Ewell, Richard Lee Byers, Scott Fischer. BOZ (talk) 16:14, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

Raising the dead, again

OK, I can't help myself... ;) I did some digging and found Klaus Scherwinski, Steve Crompton, Sam Chupp, Duncan Harris, and Richard Ranallo. Darn... OK, thanks for checking. I have moved the user drafts to draft space, except for Duncan Harris, whom I was having trouble verifying at all, even within the gaming community... I suspect that one was some sort of vanity article by either a very small press publisher, or someone whose work hasn't even been published at all. If you are up for some more, I found about 10-12 more AFC and deleted pages all told. I searched high and low using every method I could think of, because I wanted to exhaust every possible avenue so that hopefully there won't be any for me to find later. :) I will post more later today. By the way, if you are interested in this sort of information, since I have been keeping track... with your help, since I started in July 2013, I have reviewed 70 biography articles that were deleted or redirected, as well as failed AFC submissions and redirects with no content. 41 of them are now sourced articles, while 29 are in Draft space. Hey Paul,

I have seen a few IP editors posting that Anthony J. Bryant has passed away, but the best I have seen so far is Facebook posts and forums as sources. After successful Requested Moves, Tom Braunlich and Wilf K. BLPrefimprove

Hi, Paul Erik. I titled this thread "back among the living" because I intended to focus on live articles – although in the end, I figure getting the rest of the deleted ones I could find was worthwhile. I intended to do this in two parts; first the few bio articles on the D&D WikiProject with the {{notability}}, and then a larger group with the {{BLPrefimprove}} tag. As it stood, that group was originally 12-15 or so when I started compiling the list. However, between then and now, another user went through all the articles on the D&D WikiProject with AWB, and it turns out a couple dozen more bio articles had just a regular refimprove tag that got switched to BLPrefimprove, which is a little more serious of a tag. So, before I move on with that, I want to know if you are willing to stick with me for just a bit longer. There are far fewer articles in this last group than there were among the 70-ish deleted articles (looks to be somewhere in the mid-40s at my last count) which we just spent half a year(!) going through. Aside from any future articles coming up for deletion, this would be the last thing I would ask for your help with for the forseeable future. I have added my Designers & Dragons source to a few of them already, and will go back over the rest to make sure I have applied it to as many as I can. Let me know if you are in! I was checking for Don Perrin but got stuck with some indecision. I can't find any biographical material, but there are a few reviews in places like Library Journal or Publishers Weekly; do you think it would help if I add those kinds of citations? It might not hurt? At the very least, you can add citations for which books he wrote,[1] and maybe those reviews could bolster some of the articles we may have on the books themselves. Music trivia, vol. 492

I've got another nagging Canadian music mystery for you. Doubt you'll have any more luck than I did, but it can't hurt to get some more eyes on it anyway.

In the process of reffing up Alta Moda, I discovered a factoid I never knew before, namely that they placed a song called "American Chaser" in the soundtrack to Popeye Doyle, a 1986 television film starring Ed O'Neill. The song isn't on their self-titled album, but as undoubtedly you already know, Alta Moda transmogrified into Infidels in 1990 — and this is where the challenge comes in. Fast forward to the Infidels album, and there's a song called "Hold Me Tight". Sample lyric: "strong steel/big wheel...American chaser".

So, natch, my question is whether it's the same song under a different title, or just a turn of phrase they reused in an otherwise different song. The most obvious place to answer that would be to track down a copy of the movie, obviously, but that's not proving to be the easiest thing in the world to do. Any insight or leads? Francis Bacon(Artist)

Hi Paul

'Irish-born British' has not been used before. It is made up by Editors. He should have been described the same way as Yeats, Stoker, Wilde etc. The onus should have been on those who wish to use this term, to prove it. Why has the onus been reversed? That Bacon was born in Ireland is a stipulated fact. To claim his nationality as being British, means you have to alter every single person born in Ireland pre-1922, to being British(irish-born British, irish-born Irish???) Born in Ireland and described as Anglo-Irish, 'ad infinitum' by sources. I have never seen this disputed until I came to wikipedia. Will all future articles be decided by the nationality of the editors? This should have been straight forward. All the editors had to do was stick to the objective facts. 1. Born in Ireland. The reader can then make a subjective judgement, from there. 2. The only subjective leeway allowable would be to call him, an 'Irish Painter' or 'Anglo-Irish Painter'. You did not have come across in the 17th Century to use this term. It is used for Southern Irish Protestant class.

The contribution of Protestants or Anglo-Irish is immense(I am biased in this and even then I would have no problem leaving him as 'Irish painter'.) The Anglo-Irish have added a richness to this island and are regarded as some of the greatest Irishmen/women. The coming generations from all over the world will do the same. To allow narrow minded individuals(Irish and British) to describe these people, as non Irish or 'Irish-born Chinese', Irish-born Polish' indicates 'blow-ins' who are not really Irish. (my subjective opinion.)" This is disgusting for an encyclopedia. Anglo-Irish is used the same way as Irish-American is used. Not American-born Irish.

As per my original objection in the talk pages, after the 'ad infinitum(and therefore right, as three men make a tiger) took place:

"He was born in Ireland, even the complication of the six counties does not come into it. The free state or Republic is a red herring. Do you mean to suggest that everyone born on the island of Ireland, before 1922 were British? He is Irish. The vast majority of the nation has Norman, Celtic and Anglo-Saxon blood(and thankfully more cultures are added in recent times) who are all Irish(nationality), regardless of race. The fact that he was born in Ireland is a fact. Why has the onus of whether he was British or Irish defaulted to 'prove he is Irish'? This is appallingly biased editing. This logic would mean, anyone, whose parents were not of the nationality, of the geographical location of said person's birthplace, would have their nationality stripped. This smacks of the most perverse racism. A child with Irish parents, born in America, is American. Is there a standing count for how many years you must live in a country after you are born, to be stripped? How has this got past the Editors? Racist nationals could not have done a better job. Rabid Irish nationals baulked at the suggestion that Britain's greatest General was Irish. Daniel O'Connell saying "Just because one is born in a stable..." This suited British nationalists as well so the phrase was put in the Duke's mouth. Born in Ireland. Irish Painter. >This is objective fact. Everything else is subjective and should not be tolerated in a publication that claims to be an encyclopedia or are the facts reduced to the nationality of the editors? Those of 'consensus' opinion are going to be busy, modifying every Irish persons wikipedia entry who were born pre 1922. How many generations are you going to go back? Hello, and thanks for the additional explanation of your edits to the article Francis Bacon (artist). I don't have an opinion as to how the article ought to describe Bacon's nationality. I appreciate that it might appear that I have an opinion because I protected the article from editing by new or unregistered editors, and the version that I protected states "Irish-born British" but I would be fine with a different description if that were the consensus found through a new discussion on the talk page. For better or for worse, Wikipedia works through a consensus model—please read Wikipedia:Consensus if you have not done so already—and that might occasionally make some articles prone to some nationalistically biased editing by a small vocal few, but we hope that over the long run these things settle into something neutral. To repeat, I do not have an opinion as to the best way to describe Bacon's nationality, and I'm not involving myself in the discussion, which would need to take place at Talk:Francis Bacon (artist). Another Canadian music miniproject

Over the past few weeks, a user (frankly I suspect the topic himself) has repeatedly tried to overwrite Leslie Howe with an unsourced and uncategorized version which is very clearly structured and written as a promotional advertisement rather than an encyclopedia article. I've reverted it each time, but he keeps trying again, so I wanted to ask if you'd be willing to help review that other version to see if there's anything in it that's worth actually integrating into the article. Speedy notifications

Hi Paul. Tx for your note -- no need to contact me on removal of speedy notifications. The articles are watchlisted, so I will see the actions, and that would just be more needless effort.

Also, I think I've been clear on this, but just a comment away from the fray ... I think you do great work.

Also, as you probably noticed from my post at the general discussion, the creator of a huge chunk of those articles has said he is fine with such articles being deleted. Thus, they would also qualify for deletion I would think under our "creator OKs it" speedy rules.

But that being said, I don't think that should stop you (or anyone) from if they can evidencing the appropriate level of significance by, for example, as you do ... providing GNG-supporting refs. And if supplied, I don't think anyone would at all be against the article remaining.

If you like, btw, you can take a look at some of our festival stubs ... if there are remaining cases that are a problem, they are likely largely there. If you like, you could glance at fixing some before they are speedied (your call).

Also, if you want to consider festivals that perhaps do not all have wp articles, to consider whether they warrant them and you perhaps wish to create them, some (largely non-RS, but a starting point) lists you may wish to consider checking are here, and here, here, and here, and here, and here. I'm guessing that they may contain some festivals that are more significant than some that are at issue.

And thanks for your helpful (and correct) copyedit edits on the article I just created moments ago, Musical Mutual Protective Union. Is this coincidence, or do I have a (friendly?) stalker?

Whew. Thanks for the context. It always catches my attention if I have a difference of view, even with an exceedingly proper editor such as you, and they turn up at some obscure article I just edited (as here). So thanks for explaining it--makes perfect sense. And your edits were helpful, as I said. As to the creator of the huge chunk of these articles saying "please feel free to delete them," I wasn't certain whether you had seen that discussion; I should have flagged it earlier in the general discussion, but it was still helpful so as not to confuse the general issue with his particular issue (even if half the articles are his). BTW -- I haven't (though he it appears wouldn't mind) looked specifically at his article creations; it's just that his articles are a high percentage of the festival articles that don't reflect significance, and as he points out nobody in 7 years fleshed them out any further, which might have gone towards apparent significance. But as you expressed concern as to the older articles, it's an interesting point he makes ... one could legitimately be more concerned with an older article never having been improved to the point that it reflects significance, than with an article created today. Hi Roy. I did not restore the full list that you had removed. I thought I was following the guidance at WP:TENANTS, namely the part that states, "Given their prominence within the shopping center and the role they play in drawing customers, it may be appropriate to mention the anchor stores in an article, as long as such stores are identified as anchors in a reliable source and the source is appropriately referenced." The sources do seem to cover the changes in anchor tenants as they are important to the region's economic activity and are also related to some of the large expansions of the shopping centre. Roy - I don't read Paul as saying they are behind a paywall (and knowing Paul to be especially careful in refs, would have assumed he would have indicated as much if that were the case). Wikipedia is very careful about violating copyrights, so new users such as yourselves often feel as if they've been treated very abruptly, with deletions and templated warnings. Apologies if that happened for you! I see that the Boston Children's Hospital website you use very clearly says "© 2005-2014 All Rights Reserved". Furthermore, there is a link to the website's Terms of use where it states "All text, graphics, and code used on this web site are covered by United States and international copyright laws. All Rights Reserved by Boston Children's Hospital. The materials on this web site are copyrighted by Boston Children's Hospital and/or by other applicable rights holders." That means that Wikipedia cannot host copy-pasted portions of the website's text, even if you personally have created it. (For information about donating online text which you have not placed under copyright, please refer to WP:DONATETEXT.)

Regarding the "blatant advertising", that was probably too harsh, however the way the material was presented, it contained a lot of turns of phrase that are sometimes called "puffery" (vague, positive claims rather than a more neutral stating of the facts; see WP:FLOWERY) as well as long lists that give more the appearance of a CV than an encyclopedia article.

A further problem is that if you are associated with the subject you write about, most Wikipedia editors consider that a conflict of interest, and ask that you not write the article yourselves. Please see the material at WP:BFAQ#EDIT as well as other potentially helpful sections of that page. A lot of what's at WP:BFAQ#COMPANY probably also applies to a person you work with, and not just a company you work for.

Hi, I see all the good job you do on Wikipedia and respect your work. I just wanted to speak out about a user called Romeo J Miller, who is going around adding his name to Wikipedia pages of many songs and adding his name as a producer or writer. No, if it's clear that another source copied it from Wikipedia, then it would not have to be removed from Wikipedia. One of the problems here is that the Slimspresents website is not archived at webarchive.org (see here) so it is not immediately obvious whether it was first written there or first written on Wikipedia. We are not using Wikipedia for promotional purposes. It is a factual page about a music producer. The official website for the producer is ran by Sony Music UK and is clearly Copyrighted on there. It isn't user generated. The website the producer was featured on is a company that features musicians and artists. If you read the website it says the label hasnt been launched yet, hence why it is not appearing in the list of already established labels on the website for Sony Music UK. Unconstructive edit???

"Unconstructive" might have been a poor way to phrase it; sorry about that. You added the entry "Mojo Hill" to the disambiguation page Mojo, but Wikipedia does not have an article about a person named Mojo Hill. (Is an article about this person notable enough for inclusion in an encyclopedia? That does not appear to be the case, but I might be mistaken.) Disambiguation pages are to help readers navigate to existing Wikipedia articles. There is also some further explanation at Wikipedia:Write the article first.
