Message about vandalism

Hi. Someone editing from your IP address made this edit. I'll take your word for it that it wasn't you. The way to avoid such messages in the future if you edit (or just read!) from the same IP as someone making unconstructive edits is to register an account. See Wikipedia:Why create an account?. the use of an IP alone to identify a contributor and then threaten to block etc. with claims of vandalism is beyond inappropriate. All ISPs have leased IPs that they then distribute through DHCP type mechanisms. This means IPs are dynamically leased as opposed to statically. Most users, other than businesses etc., that have a specific need receive many IP addresses over time. Whenever the lease expires, a power cycle of your modem, whether POTS, ADSL, or Cable, can result in a newly assigned IP. Further the use of IP address spoofing is also contributing to the issue of anonymity. Even MAC address usage would not be an accurate identifier as those can be spoofed as well. Considering the above user noted a gap of 6 years, it would suggest that what I am stating is factual. Rather than automatically accusing and threatening to block, a message stating "If this message was sent to you in error, please just disregard". A little effort to be polite and less effort in making threats as has be witnessed and experienced does little to foster a healthy contributor community.204.237.25.252 (talk) 06:16, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

I guess that's some poor fact-checking at the Globe, as it describes her as Barrie's "first woman mayor". Checking further, I found a letter to the editor from earlier (Feb. 15, 1974; signed George Webb, alderman, city of Kingston) complaining that the Globe had misidentified her in a report, saying the designation rightly belongs to Marjorie Hamilton. Dragonlance novels

Hi, Paul.

Does your database have any reviews for the novels Prisoner of Haven‎ or Dark Thane? If you do, and if the reviews are also online, I would be glad to add them to the articles myself like last time.  :) I suspect that the other four books in the "Age of Mortals" series are going to come under similar scrutiny before long, so if you don't mind could you also look up Conundrum and The Lioness? Wizard's Conclave and The Lake of Death are also books in the series but we have no articles for them; if you find anything for those two we can find a place for the reviews. I added one to Prisoner of Haven. For Dark Thane, I found just one brief one (not available online): Cadman, Tim (3 April 2002). "Women are on another planet in sci-fi world", The Times, p. It's a one-sentence paragraph: The next book in Miller Lau's series, Dark Thane (due out in April, Pounds 6.99; offer, Pounds 6.79 plus p&p 99p), is equally readable, even by a jaded cynic like myself, who devoured it in a couple of sittings. Wouldn't you know it, there is another book by the same name. Oh well. I don't mean to sidetrack, but when List of Dragonlance artifacts‎ was put up for PROD and then for AFD, I didn't want to bother you about it... but now that it's at DRV, I have a feeling that things are going to get pretty silly. ;) If you don't mind, would you take a look and see if you can find sources for a few of those entries? We dug up a few sources for the Dragonlances - the weapons that gave the setting its name - so that entry is at least OK. I found a little bit about the Disks of Mishakal, and was expecting to find something about the Blue Crystal Staff but didn't see anything yet. As far as the rest, I get the feeling that there might be something for the Bloodstone of Fistandantilus, Dragon Orbs, Graygem of Gargath, Hammer of Kharas, Silver Arm of Ergoth, and Staff of Magius, but I'd expect them to be longshots, and the rest I am not familiar with at all. There's a bit of a mention of the 'legendary blue crystal staff" at that article at The Hindu we've seen before. The Disks of Mishakal seem to have a mention in "Game contains mazes, monsters, combat": The Sunday Patriot-News [Harrisburg, Pa] 3 Dec 1989: F6 but I don't have full-text access to that. We have had a little bit of luck finding sources, but most of those articles are still unsourced. Great, thanks, now we have two reviews for the whole series, so that is GNG worthy. You checked The Dargonesti already, which is one article that we may merge into the Lost Histories. I have a source for Land of the Minotaurs, and we have no articles for The Kagonesti, The Irda, The Gully Dwarves, and The Dragons - if you could find anything for any of those five books, or for the Lost Histories series itself, that would help solidiy this merge as well. I am not planning on doing any other merges with these articles due to general difficulty in finding sources, but given what we have been dealing with lately you never know. Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Epeefleche

You may or may not be aware that the RFC/U on Epeefleche's approach to removing easily and obviously verifiable content has closed. Epeefleche essentially ignored you and I, and refused to respond to the main point of my criticism. The closing admin, also, has gone on to completely ignore your and my perspectives also in taking Epeefleche's side. Yes, there was a roughly two-thirds split against my position (keeping in mind that there was some circumstantial evidence of offwiki canvassing, including that Epeefleche has a background of doing exactly that), but that's not a unanimous enough reason to categorically ignore one side, and then to criticise me. This is an outright endorsement of the strategies and approaches used by Epeefleche's side, i.e., that wikidramamongering is an effective defence against any criticism and to silence opponents.

I no longer care. This is the final nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned regarding the culture at wikipedia. I have retired, primarily due to the admin conduct around the wikidrama of this RFC/U, and do not intend to return. D&D people

Hi, Paul!  :)

I was recently looking on LinkedIn and I realized that a lot of current and former artists and writers who worked on D&D have profile pages there. So, I remembered that there were some artists' pages you looked at previously that you couldn't find anything on because the names were too common. I looked and found a number of them on LinkedIn, and I looked at some of the other ones that you couldn't find anything for previously, and they had pages too. I was wondering if you'd be willing to take another look at some of these people? There are about 20-30, I forget the number but I have it written down somewhere. Having more of an idea of projects they have worked on and places they have worked at may help narrow down a search, and also since some of those you may have searched on as far back as 2010, there may be new articles written about them. Would you be willing to help me out with that? Hey Paul, this is probably a longshot, but could you check to see if you have any sources for either the subjects of House Do'Urden or House Baenre or any of the characters listed on those pages. Richard Divall (b. 1945) was born in Sydney and educated at Manly Boys High School and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He later went overseas and studied conducting with Sir Charles Mackerras, Wolfgang Wagner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Sir Reginald Goodall. In 1969 he began work as a music producer with the Australian Broadcasting Commission, before embarking on his long career as an opera conductor. He was Music Director of the Queensland Opera (1971), Musical Director of the Victorian State Opera (1972–95) and Principal Resident Conductor of the Australian Opera (1996–2001). He was appointed Associate Professor of Music at the University of Melbourne in 1991 and from 2000 to 2005 he was Senior Associate in the Centre for Australian Music Studies at the University of Melbourne.

Divall is a conductor, composer and a musicologist. He has conducted over 120 operas in many countries. In 1984 he conducted Don Carlos in the opening opera performance at the Melbourne Arts Centre. Throughout his career he has been active in conducting and performing colonial music and his orchestrations include over 40 colonial works and the complete songs of Puccini. He has edited music by Isaac Nathan, Carl Linger, G.W. The information on the website of the National Library of Australia could be a source of information, but not a source of sentences. Wow I am confused. Paul Erik you are an administrator for english wikipedia, and you treated me in such a fashion rather than suggest a remedy. Please do provide information on what specifically was wrong with my contribution to the Rob Ford article. I referenced a website ad that supports the statement that I have made. Further to date MSM, other than Canada.com has not posted this information. You are not being impartial if you are controlling content to the Rob Ford wiki that doesn't fit the current MSM narrative. I'm not attempting to control content that fits or does not fit with the mainstream media's narrative; for better or for worse, Wikipedia has a policy of asking for reliable sources to support content added to articles. I used a higher level warning template than we would typically use for new users (it's a pre-written warning not my own words), which is why it came across as needlessly aggressive and made indirect references to slander and libel. I'm sorry about that. As you can imagine, there's been quite a bit of trouble with this article. (TPS: Why is it that when an article's full protection expires, it does not return to its previous level of protection, which in this case was indefinite semi-protection?) To be honest? Because I wasn't sure what I was doing. I was looking at another article which I knew had a "keep" from an AfD, and trying to copy the right things to the right places. Hi, Paul. These were actually already deleted, but I have incubated the articles for "The Walking Dead" actors Markice Moore and Vincent M. Ward. Hi BOZ. I can find about a dozen sources for Markice, but all that they do is verify he was in ATL, nothing more than that. For Vincent Ward, there's a brief paragraph here, as well as this, not sure if this is a reliable source; and this. Nothing else offline that I can find. Hope all is well with you. I was wondering if you would help me in revisiting some "dearly departed" biographical articles to see if there is anything that can be done to bring them back. I know that in some of these cases you were previously involved in searching for sources when they came up for AFD, but given that 2-3 years have passed since then I was thinking that a new search could possibly turn up new sources. No rush at all on any of these since of course they aren't in any danger, but if you could take a(nother) look, that would be super helpful.

Swycaffer: There's a mention of him in a Chronicle review (October 2003: vol 25, issue 9, page 45) of the Fred Patten-edited collection, Best in Show: Fifteen Years of Outstanding Furry Fiction, which apparently includes a Swycaffer story. Another Chronicle article (September 2002: vol 24, issue 9, page 10) notes his birthday as September 26, 1956. There appears to be a review (by Jim Hopper) of his book Web of Futures in the San Diego Tribune (22 Feb 1991: page C-3) but I don't have full-text access to that. • As you're probably aware, there is an entire book about him and his works published by Titan Books. And I see in Chronicle 27.4 (Apr 2005): 13-17 it notes he won a silver-level Spectrum Award. BOZ asked me to weigh in. The Bleeding Cool source is definitely a good one. I've never heard of Nuke the Fridge, though. I would look for an "About" page on their site in order to see if they're credentialed writers or just fans, and (this is very important), if they accept user-submissions (which WP:USERG says is not reliable), or if they have strict editorial control over their content. There are several hits for directory-like listings, things like this which don't help much with establishing notability. It is Finished

And I'm done! It took four months to finish this little quest of mine (wow!) but I went far further than expected, and have now restored over 30 articles that were deleted or redirected, or which I created from bare redirects. Thank you, once again, for your help Paul - it has been invaluable! I don't know if you have noticed the draftspace discussion at VPP, but if that does pass, then I am going to be sending a number of these redlinks thataway if it is created; hopefully they will be bluelinks sooner or later. If you don't mind taking a look for sources for Walter Milliken, Adam Jury, and R. Hyrum Savage as I mentioned above, I think it is very safe to close out this thread. I may find more deleted bios in the future, but those will most likely be one-offs as I am not going to be actively searching anymore. My next task will be to start some game designer articles from scratch using my source - who knows how many that will allow me to do. :) While I have been telling you about these deleted ones, I have also been sourcing dozens of live articles on game designers and other related people using my source. Thanks for the wikilove; much appreciated. There is one thing I'm struggling with, though, and that's whether or not I should actually move the article to his full name. From what I can tell, it seems to be a bit willy-nilly as to whether he's credited with or without the Vopnfjord — generally it does get used in print references (and even on the cover of his current album), but doesn't seem to get used in broadcast ones (I'm guessing at least partly because radio DJs don't want to actually have to try to pronounce it) — with the result that you could probably make equally credible claims either way as to which one is actually the name he's "better known by". Thanks for that, I thought about it some more and finally decided to go with the full name for those reasons — for example, with Young Waverer being essentially his breakthrough album, to me that album cover carries a lot more weight than the older ones did. Sock tagging

Hi, Paul, you tagged User:Gottahavearealneed as a suspected puppet. After you did that, I tagged User:Gottabecrazy in the same fashion. Areaseven, who fancies himself an SPI clerk, changed both of our tags. I've run up against Areaseven before. Ironically, although I threatened him if they kept reverting me, after some consultation with another admin, I decided that Areaseven was right and restored their preferred tag.

This whole thing irks me. I don't mind a non-admin tagging a user with one of those "expressed a concern" tags, but once a user has been blocked, it seem to me that the admin who blocked them, or perhaps another involved admin, should do the tagging. I'm not sure I know of any policy that prohibits a non-admin from doing it, but it strikes me as wrong. It also irks me that the Areaseven does it without edit summaries and without consulting with the admin who added the tag in the first instance.

If none of this bothers you, I'm going to let it go as I think I am more irritated by this sort of thing than many. That's why I came here rather than restoring the original tags and getting into another fight with Areaseven.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:14, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks Bbb23. Yeah it's irritating that Areaseven changed the tag on the userpage of the user I blocked without even letting me know. It's not so irritating to me that I would revert them, or even mention it to them. It's now got me curious, though, and made me look more carefully at Template:Sockpuppet—why is "confirmed" more appropriate than "blocked"? I hadn't noticed there were those two options; previously I just knew that "checked" would be wrong for me to add since I did not perform a checkuser. Hi Lina, thanks for your note. Updates to the Sheela Basrur are certainly welcome, but need to be verifiable (see Wikipedia:Verifiability for detailed information), ideally with the use of citations to reliable sources, which would include things like newspaper and magazine articles about her, and books about her if there are any.

I removed your coworker's contributions because they appeared to have been copy-pasted from the sheelabasrurcentre.ca website, without attribution, so that was a red flag for potential copyright violation and plagiarism. Also some of the material did not convey the neutral point of view that would be expected in an encyclopedia article. Sorry if that came across as heavy-handed, but your coworker was not responding to messages I left, and was not communicating through the use of edit summaries either.

If you would like to read a general introduction as to how to contribute to Wikipedia please see Wikipedia:Welcoming committee/Welcome to Wikipedia. Yes, it probably would be a good idea to register an account so that other editors know the contributions are coming from one person (and there are other advantages; see Wikipedia:Why create an account?).

Edit warring is not the way to bring about a change to a Wikipedia article. Upload of Images to Wikipedia + Wikipedia Commons

Hi Paul,

To follow up on my "Wikipedia Images For Free!!!I" post (15 August 2013) to your page for help, I figured out how to do it myself. I managed to upload an image free for everone to use, per the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Licence. I also assigned the image to various Commons categories. My edit to Web Therapy

You told me that my edit to the Web Therapy wikipedia page was incorrect. As a fan of the show, I looked it up on your website to learn more. I noticed that there was an error where the page said that the chat server used in the show was iChat, so I corrected it by changing it to skype. If you watch one episode of the show it clearly shows, that although they are are using Mac computers they are using skype. Mocaccino

Thanks for sorting out the mess I made on the above. What I was trying to do (incompetently) was to move the article to Mocha coffee on the basis of WP:COMMONNAME. The article had been under the name Caffè mocha for some time, but had recently been moved by someone to Mocaccino on the basis that this was the "original" Italian name. I'm not an expert on the topic, but based on some of the discussion on the talk page it looks as if it is at least a little bit controversial whether to name it Mocha coffee or Caffè mocha or Cafe mocha or Mocaccino, so I would suggest putting it through Wikipedia:Requested moves. Daniel Romano

Hello Paul

As someone who has worked with Daniel in the past I know that having affiliations with a punk band is single handedly destroying his career. He is being pigeon holed into a group of "Country punk" which is not what daniel plays. over time my fear is that wikipedia would be allowed to write "daniel plays country punk" which is completely incorrect. this alteration to the page would best establish the truth and not confuse the people interested in looking him up. Im just looking out for his best interests. Its a fickle world out there. You would be doing the right thing by not having Attack in black be an important part of his career.

Justin "Bad Boy" Bieber

Hi Paul Erik - Yes, you are right ... I should've asked for consensus. But all the Justin fans would have diagreed with me. Instead I made a bold but not reckless edit knowing that it would be quickly reverted. However, the edits being made as America was waking up - the possibility of the press seeing the edits in the lede became a reality. Because a lot of journalists look at Wikipedia first, it's possible that it could have influenced their copy. I do have opinions about Mr Bieber - I think, for instance, that fame has been to much for him and that in many ways he is a victim of the music industry. However, after making today's edits, I started to see a few things I like about him. I don't know how sincere he is, but I read about the fact that he makes a Jewish prayer before each performance ... before I knew it (it's the Wikipedian in me) I was researching Deuteronomy.
