WikiProject London

Hi,

We are having an update of participation at WikiProject London and are asking contributors to bold their names if they are still contributing to London-related projects. Inactive members will be removed at the end of the month. Thanks for participating, COME ON ENGLAND! DJR   (Talk) 15:26, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

WP:Lon major tasks

Hi again - I'm not sure if you have the WikiProject on your watchlist or not - if not then I would recommend adding it. In any case, we have two "Major tasks" currently operational - if you could help in the implementation of either it would be much appreciated. Regards, DJR (talk) 14:31, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Dates question

Hello, I noticed you recently made many small edits to the Requiem (Fauré) article, including wikifying all the dates. Thanks. I'm relatively new to wikipedia, so I'm not sure what the standard is, but I remember reading the WIkipedia:Manual of Style section on Wikilinking, which included the following advice: "Not every year listed in an article needs to be wikilinked. Ask yourself: will clicking on the year bring any useful information to the reader?" To me, it seems a bit overkill to link them all, but I'm interested in your take on it. I'm also unfamiliar with the language information you entered. Perhaps you could enlighten me about that or point me to an appropriate page. – MarkBuckles 19:52, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Featured article candidate review: Buffy article

Hi

Just letting WikiProject Buffyverse members know that the article 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' has recently been nominated as a candidate to become a featured article. Should it become a featured article, it will be possible for the article to appear on the Wikipedia main page on March 10th 2007, the 10th anniversary of Buffy (the premiere, "Welcome to the Hellmouth" aired March 10th 1997).

Any feedback you can offer to improve the article and/or to either object or support the nomination would be wonderful:

I noticed that you edited someone else's comment for clarity, spelling or grammar. As a rule, refrain from editing others' comments without their permission. Though it may appear helpful to correct typing errors, grammar, etc., please do not go out of your way to bring talk pages to publishing standards, since it is not terribly productive and will tend to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. For more details, see Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. Thanks, Extraordinary Machine 22:48, 23 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Jon Courtenay Grimwood

The new/alt image for 9tail Fox is great - it's not like there's any real difference, after all. More importantly, you've turned the JCG page into a fantastical cover-filled library of his works. It's brilliant. You've wikilinked all the books, though, and most don't have articles.... shall I get to work? ;)

I've been meaning to write articles for the rest of his stuff for a while now. I'll do Stamping Butterflies and redRobe (as much as I can remember of them) if you rewrite my horrible, horrible edit on Jon's writing style to make it fit for human eyes - deal? Dashes ?

I noticed that you changed ndashes to - in Wimund. Is that right ? I read the dashes page as saying that page numbers or years, closed ranges, should be like 10&ndash20. The 1134x1140 things shouldn't really be dashes, it's normal, but lazy, to use that to say "sometime between 1134 and 1140" as 1134x means "after 1134" and x1140 "before 1140". Probably should be written out longform in most cases. Anyway, thanks for reminding me that I never did finish rewriting either Wimund or Harald Maddadsson, so I'd better get to work ! Unspecified source for Image:Black Man cover (Amazon).jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Black Man cover (Amazon).jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Awyong Jeffrey Mordecai Salleh 01:43, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

The copyright status is not in question at all and is quite clearly stated on the image page itself. See your Talk: page for a reply but please try paying more attention before querying image status in future. — OwenBlacker 17:57, 31 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, OwenBlacker!

I put back a couple of words explaining an example in Norn language. I believe that it is better not to assume that the enwiki readers from all over the world must know to what Lord's prayer refers. This is a minor matter; if you disagree and remove the explanation again, I'll leave the article as you wish. JoergenB 18:43, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Anglicisation

If you would like to bitch about it, please do... here. It would also be kind if you could contact any others you think would be bothered by an (already widespread) single-handed word-to-word 'translation' of hundreds of articles. Many of these were simple 'word swaps' without an added provision of the extra context needed for an English comprehension of the not-so-common definition of the English word - there is a fair amount of correction to be done, one way or another.

Thanks, best,

  • The LGBT Portal has once again been revamped and a work rota started. Efforts towards Featured Portal status are slowly coming together.
  • The assessment system has been a great success, we have tagged over 4000 articles! Please tag any LGBT related articles you come across by adding {{LGBTProject | class=}} to the talkpage. Please see the Assessment Department for how to assess an article according to the grading system.
  • The Translation department has changed its focus, to LGBT articles about non-English topics and people on which there may be more information on the relevant foreign Wikipedia. Please add your name if you are fluent in any language other than English.
  • Jumpaclass is picking up slowly, with nine people having entered. With over 2000 stubs we need to improve our article quality. Please sign up and get it going! Challenge another user to see how far you can jump a stub!
  • There is an ongoing discussion about the current LGBT categorisation system here, here, and a little bit here. A special page has now been set up here to deal with this.
  • A Watchlist has been set up to monitor controversial and/or highly vandalised articles. It can also be used for article disputes, just add a note explaining the nature of the dispute.
  • With the influx of so many active members, there is now enough support for a LGBT studies peer review, which may be found here. It's in the beta phase at the moment, so bear with us if we make any mistakes. Feel free to peer review any articles you have been working on.
  • It was agreed this month to start reducing the uses of the Notice board, as many members felt that it was not effective. An open tasks template has been created, bringing together important announcements, FAC/FARs, Peer reviews, XfDs, the COTM, and requested articles. You may desire to watchlist it. A Deletion sorting subpage is also now working to bring together XfDs - this should be bot-driven, but we have not currently tagged enough articles to make this fully automated, so please update the list with any LGBT-related XfDs you come across.

Join us in the "Terminator" Article discussion page...please...

If you are still a member of Wikipedia, please join user:TomTheHand and myself in a discussion of which terms should apply to the Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 Infiltration Unit in its various forms.

To be as neutral as possible, I will relate the views of TomTheHand as well as my own, as accurately as posible:

Tom believes that the term "Android" should apply to all of the incarnations of the Model 101, from Endoskeleton all the way up to the gestalts of flesh-and-blood and the combat chassis played by Arnold in the movies. He furthermore believes that the term "cyborg" does not apply to any of the Terminator's forms.

Thanos777 -myself -thinks that the Terminator is worthy of multiple appelations depending on which configuration (read: Type/Series) the Model 101 is configured as.

That is to say, I believe that the "Base" Model 101, just the endoskeleton with no cosmetic enhancements, is best defined as either a Humanoid Robot, Anthropomorphic Robot, or simply a Robot.

When the Model 101 is outfitted as a Type/Series 600, the endoskeleton covered by rubber skin, I believe that the Terminator is then most correctly classified as an "android."

And finally, when the Model 101 is equipped as a Type/Series 800/850, the endoskeleton with the living flesh-and-blood covering, I believe that the most correct term for the creatre is "cyborg."

Again, I respectfully ask you to come back to the "Terminator" Article and lend your input; those of us who are there in the Article's discussion page are engaging in a lot of back-and-forth regarding the different terms and the disagreements as to when they should be used.

Hope to "see" you there soon!!!

Just replying to your query about the flags that appear on the front page scan that accompanies The Times-Picayune article. Former Country guidelines

I just saw the infobox you did for Livonian Brothers of the Sword. Placing the language tags in the title is something I hadn't seen before. I like it. For multiple languages, it makes sense. - 52 Pickup 14:47, 2 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm pretty much running WPFC on my own and I can do with any help that I can get. Also, if you're looking for the WPFC userbox, it's at {{User WPFC}} - 52 Pickup 19:49, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the offer. At the moment, there are two major things that need to be done:
  1. Checking that the infoboxes are correctly used. Many people who use the Former Country/Subdivision infoboxes are not WPFC members and are not generally up-to-date regarding their usage. Many use incomplete syntax, and very few read the instructions. Just making sure that the infoboxes are used according to our evolving guidelines (italics in the title, short history text, leaders correctly displayed, etc.) goes a long way in making sure that others learn how to do things properly.
  2. Tagging and assessing articles. Over 1000 articles are now tagged with the {{WPFC}} banner, but most of them are unassessed. Assessing articles takes time, so I can only do so many on my own. See the banner page and the WPFC assessment page for more information.
If you can help with either of these two things, that would be great. - 52 Pickup 19:07, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:LUL navboxes

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Wikipedia:LUL navboxes, by Black Falcon, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Wikipedia:LUL navboxes fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

G6 (housekeeping). This is a redirect to a WikiProject subpage that has not been used since at least February 2007 and was, prior to that, last edited in February 2005. The redirect has only two incoming links from lists of pages from database dumps. In short, it is an unused redirect to an unused and outdated project subpage.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Wikipedia:LUL navboxes, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Wikipedia:LUL navboxes itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 07:29, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Infobox at Holy Roman Empire

Hi, Owen. I reverted some of the formatting changes you made to the infobox, namely the <br> and   additions to the beginning and ending dates. The changes did not have the effect you intended in all browsers, due to the variety of window sizes in which people view the page. (When I visited the page, for instance, "Confederation of the Rhine" ended up on three lines instead of the two you intended.) I appreciate your additions of the small Latin and German language codes. – Rob C. alias Alarob 22:11, 23 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ah, thanks for the <br> tip. That's nice to know and will save me a few keystrokes. (My own XHTML training is years out of date by now, but I did learn to be compulsive about /s). – Rob C. alias Alarob 22:20, 23 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Infobox Former Country: Free Imperial Cities

I tried to add an automatic status_text for Reichsstädte, but I can't get it to work. Any chance you could add this functionality for me, please? — OwenBlacker 14:36, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Done. Let me know if you find any bugs. - 52 Pickup 15:22, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sure, specifying HRE in the text might be a good idea. I have one suggestion: please do not place the infobox on articles for modern cities (eg. Wangen im Allgäu). Apart from having multiple infoboxes on the one page (always to be avoided) it makes it unclear what the article is actually talking about. It is always best to create separate articles for these former city-states (eg Free City of Lübeck, Free City of Frankfurt) - 52 Pickup 15:38, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Oh, d'you think? I was adding it to the History section of each Free Imperial City, with relatively brief information (much more brief than I usually add), to provide some historical context, where there's not really enough information to create a stub about the original Reichsstadt. Do you think that's too untidy?
Certainly, where there's an article about the Reichsstadt itself, I'd put it there (see Bishop of Sion, for example), but where there is no such article, I quite like a smaller version of the infobox appearing in the History section — particularly given that it then adds the appropriate categories without cluttering up the categorisation area at the end of the article.
Can I not persuade you on this? :o) — OwenBlacker 15:41, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, I'm not the one that needs to be persuaded. I don't really mind either way, but there are many others who see multiple infoboxes as a problem. There is a huge problem with this regarding biographical articles (now that's a real minefield). Also, see WP:ATC. In the case of what you are doing, I have no problem with it - so long as it isn't too obstructive (so no problem if the article has enough content aside from the infoboxes) - but some people miht object and these extra infoboxes may be removed. Thanks!

Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for your comment at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion/2007 April 30#Various EU Currency pictures! You perfectly expressed my own feelings on this matter, so... thank you! :) – Schneelocke 11:04, 1 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

No problem. This copyright paranoia is driving editors away from Wikipedia and, frankly, is really pissing me off. Though thank me more if I actually get round to sorting out the EU currency images properly, eh? ;o) — OwenBlacker 11:13, 1 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it is, and that bugs me a lot as well. What also bugs me are people who delete images but then don't even bother to clean up the article namespace afterwards (here is an example I just came across); there really is no excuse for that, in my opinion. It's just sloppiness, and it also exhibits the same "I don't care" attitude that's also visible in the lack of concern for whether aggressively deleting images on flimsy grounds might discourage or outright drive away people who would otherwise have become valuable contributors.
Ah well, sorry for the mini-rant. :) Mmm, somebody who knows a bit more about SVG or can find his way around Inkscape (I've tried in the past, but without any real success) really should make a "Say YES to fair use" banner, similar to the "Say NO" version that already exists on Commons. c.c – Schneelocke 11:25, 1 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Absolutely. And no worries about the mini-rant; I couldn't agree more. — OwenBlacker 11:26, 1 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wappen

OK, how did you manage o get the Quakenbrück Wappen onto the page? I have been trying and failing for months! docboat 09:41, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Maybe so - but I kept trying to add it, and all I got for my troubles was a blank image and a warning. I will mercilessly use your edit as a template for future attempts :) docboat 01:10, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I’ve fixed it – please withdrawn now your nomination... TNX! --FSHL 19:10, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Better now? Maybe you should play a little bit with the wave – I’m still not really contently thereby but I must go to work now...   --FSHL 04:17, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Last-ditch attempt...   --FSHL 20:33, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Are you satisfied now?   --FSHL 21:26, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Euro Coins

A quick word of caution though: apparently some people over at Wikimedia Commons have been infected with the same copyright paranoia as here on en:Wikipedia. The {{Money-EU}} template and others like it have been threatened with deletion and some coin images have been deleted. I strongly suspect that the coin images have been deleted due to licensing problems, yet €2 commemorative coin Vatican City 2004.jpg (for example, and how I came back to this subject) is still there.

In my opinion, the links from the ECB (here and here(PDF)) are pretty clear and using the {{Money-EU}} template should satisfy even the most ardent deletionist.
