Oeselians & Norsemen

Hi! You seem to know a lot about the Estonian history. There is an open discussion on the pages: Oeselians and Norsemen. There are editors claiming Oeselians were not Finnic or not speaking a Finnic language, and other editors claiming they were Finnic. On the Norsemen page, there are some editors claiming there was a Norse settlement on Saaremaa, while other editors are saying there's no proof for that. Would be grateful for your input! Thanks! August 2019

Your recent editing history at 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Estonian) shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See the bold, revert, discuss cycle for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.
Your edits are misrepresenting the source. If other sources say other things, add them rather than pretend that a source says something it doesn't. Nick-D (talk) 11:01, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

Your split of Gas van into Nazi gas van and Soviet gas van.

Given that there was no prior discussion of this move and several objections on talk, I'm going to request make a technical move request to reverse it. Do you intend to contest this? (I would, personally, advise that you not to contest it - I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but editing the redirect resulting from a move makes the move impossible to reverse for a non-administrator, and I feel WP:BOLDly moving an article with no discussion and then instantly editing the redirect is therefore improper.) If you still want the split, despite the objections, we can have a WP:RM or WP:RFC afterwards, but it ought to be reversed first as a WP:BOLD move that at least three editors have objected to. Either way, though, I figured I should consult with you before I listed it as an uncontested reversal. --Aquillion (talk) 08:48, 13 November 2019 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Soviet Estonia Elections

A tag has been placed on Template:Soviet Estonia Elections requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is an unused duplicate of another template, or a hard-coded instance of another template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is not actually the same as the other template noted, please consider putting a note on the template's page explaining how this one is different so as to avoid any future mistakes.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Proposed deletion of The Blue Hills

The article The Blue Hills has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non notable film, appears to fail WP:NFILM as nothing of substance was found in a WP:BEFORE that could help support notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Mass killings under communist regimes

From here. If you want to take me to ANI for it, do it. I apologize if I made any mistake, and while all of this ha been controversial and polarized, I want you to know I am not doing this on purpose or in bad faith — as I wrote you there, I did not make any edits while the AfD was started, and I hope that we can not discuss this any longer. Again, if you want to take me to ANI or whatever, you are free to do it; the article has since been edited to revert my edits, ana while I may question the timing of doing this as the AfD is ongoing, I have not reverted back since, and I hope we are fine. Davide King (talk) 16:49, 24 November 2021 (UTC)

That was accidental, will check and restore. --Nug (talk) 21:50, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
Just a good faith comment; I want to note this in personal way rather than at AfD. I responded to a comment you made, and you then altered the comment after I had responded. It changes the context of my response. The general consensus of practice at AfD is to strike out one's comments that one wishes to change subsequently in order for all participants to view the development of discussion. Regards, --Goldsztajn (talk) 22:40, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
Oh, okay. Sorry about that. Cheers. --Nug (talk) 22:46, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
Davide fixed the comment as a probable edit conflict error, if that happens the best method of resolving it is to copy your own comment then go back and edit the section again. ~ cygnis insignis 11:25, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

From here.

What you repeatedly fail to note is that summary is through the lens of a minority of genocide scholars, thus fails NPOV/WEIGHT, and the discussion you mentioned suffers the same problems, as it present a mix of mainstream (few) and minority (majority) views as mainstream, and from the POV of those who see Communism as the primary cause, which is distinct from what country specialists do (even those who include ideology as a cause, they do it within the context, e.g. Maoism and Stalinism, not communism). In fact, that "Communism was the greatest mass murderer in XX century" is specifically Courtois' point, and remains an issue that majority of sources in the article are not properly represented, and mislead the reader in thinking Communism is discussed in a vacuum, when Valentino et al. are discussing it within the broader context of genocides and mass killings in the 20th century. If I recall correctly, you did say that mass killings are not unique to Communism, or something this — then why do you not help us in improving the article to make this clear? As things stand, "Communism was the greatest mass murderer in XX century" and all those were mass killings is what I get from the article. I support the former and not the latter, which may be 'listyfied.'

It appears to be that you agree with TE(æ)A,ea. that since the topic is mass killings, the majority and core source must be genocide scholars, and you do not see any contradiction, e.g."As this article deals with mass killings, it will as a matter of course concern itself with scholars discussing the Great Chinese famine as a mass killing, and not concern itself with scholars discussing the Great Chinese famine as a famine; that point was the intent of my previous statement." You literally recognize that the article express just one POV That is exactly what I say: the article is a POV-fork, and, therefore, should be deleted.

As for debates about famine, I think Siebert is still correct. They are not part of mainstream scholarly discourse — apart from the Holodomor, where it is in fact debated, famines are seen by majority of scholarly sources and country specialists as not mass killings, so that section is misleading. Davide King (talk) 19:41, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

MKuCR

I cannot see this as a good faith attempt to improve Wikipedia. This book was authored by an amateur, it cites the sources that has already been cited in this article, so its citing violates the main Rummel's principle (independence of sources). White treats data in a methodologically flawed way, and it is just a poor quality tertiary source. It is not cited by experts, all publications belong to non-experts in the field. I explained that several times, and I cannot understand how a good faith user cannot understand that. Don't discredit Wikipedia. Please, self-revert as a sign of your good faith. Paul Siebert (talk) 18:20, 21 December 2021 (UTC)

For a so called "amateur", White's "poor quality tertiary source" is cited by over 50 another authors[4]. --Nug (talk) 18:26, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
Yes, I checked that several months ago. However, as I explained, all of those authors are not experts in the field. And that does not address my most important criticism:
  • White is just a librarian (according to Christian Science Monitor);
  • White cites the same sources that are already cited in the article, so his figure does not add fresh information. In contrast, by de facto double citing the same figures, you bring unneeded bias (actually, even Rummel, despite other flaws in his method, avoided that type tricks);
  • White obtains median from old (and already cited) sources without its critical analysis. In reality, it is a poor quality and methodologically flawed tertiary source. Wikipedia treats that type sources with great suspect.
You should either keep this source, but remove the sources he cites, or vise versa. Since I am planning to discuss other sources and to put them in a broader context, I would prefer if this source will be removed. Paul Siebert (talk) 19:13, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
In addition, my post at RSN went to archive without a single comment, which demonstrates that the community is disinterested in discussing this sources. Please, self-revert. Paul Siebert (talk) 21:46, 21 December 2021 (UTC)

Correlation and causation

I hope you do not mind if I write this here to not bloat the page with my comment. I could be wrong, and they are free to correct, but I think that is the point of The Four Deuces's OR/SYNTH comment, namely that for A and C we actually need reliable sources to agree and state that communism was the cause of mass killings; if all we have are correlations, all we can do is write about B. You appear to think that Tago & Wayman 2010 support A and/or C because they say "autocratic regimes, especially communist, are prone to mass killings generically, but not so strongly inclined toward gene-politicide." This is in support of B because, as you correctly noted, correlation does not imply causation; however, causation is necessary to write about C, otherwise it is OR/SYNTH. At least, that is my understanding of what they said about correlation and causation.

My other reasoning for OR/SYNTH issues is that there is sufficient mainstream criticism (Dallin, David-Fox, and others) about the grouping, which is treated as a monolithic, that we cannot state it as fact;1 we can do that only if communism was indeed the causation, but what we really have are correlations, which should be the actual scope and topic of the article. You are free to disagree with this point of mine but you should provide scholarly sources showing this criticism is not relevant or due, and that those scholars I cited do not represent a mainstream view. Anything else would be pointless, as the AfD had plenty of counter-criticism of this view, and did not find it enough to establish consensus for 'Keep'; while this argument was not enough to establish consensus for 'Deletion', it was weighty enough to find no consensus at all. Again, consider the context of overturning two consecutive 'Keep' results into 'No consensus.' That was not an easy task, and you had all the advantage.

Notes

Hi, I noticed that you have created some Soviet-Estonian articles. Estonian Operation of the NKVD is still a red link (it was a part of the Mass operations of the NKVD).

I don't speak Estonian, but I tried finding some sources. There is a 2018 news article: Postimees: 80 aastat 10 000 eestlase tapmisest. I am unable to find who is the author of the study behind this article?

AFAIK this 1937-38 killing of Soviet Estonians is completely missing from Wikipedia. Perhaps you can find the study or even create a stub article, or know some Estonian Wikipedian who can? --Sankari (talk) 18:59, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Sankari, I see you already posted a request at Wikipedia:WikiProject Estonia, that's a good start. I have a lot of sources on Estonia history, I'll see if I can dig something up. --Nug (talk) 20:33, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Regarding your question

What I'd typed before you removed your section: @Nug: WP:A/I/CA contains a list of clarification requests, but unfortunately there is no search function. (Indeed, until recently, that index did not exist; many thanks to the clerk team and especially Dreamy Jazz for their work creating it.) Best, KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 04:58, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Books

What are you reading? ~ cygnis insignis 08:37, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Just finished Murder Without Hatred by Anton Weiss-Wendt, and am half way through Pax Romana by Adrian Goldsworthy, interesting book about whether it was actually real or just self serving propaganda to justify brutal conquest. How about you? --Nug (talk) 12:10, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
I’ll check them out, the second one sounds especially interesting. Papers about animal behaviour mostly, but have been trying out 19th Century German literature as background for the later stuff I’ve read and enjoyed. ~ cygnis insignis 11:18, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

While communist ideology indeed was used to justify mass murder, especially, during Red Terror and Great Purge, and yes, obviously, Mao and Pol Pot followed their understanding of Marxist-Leninist dogma, this is very complicated. First of all, the entire "communist regimes" story of 20th century was created by Russia/USSR. Hence, some historians/philosophers (for example, Nikolay Berdyaev) considered this to be the story of Soviet colonialism (aka velikoderzhavny shovinism). He wrote: "The Russian people did not achieve their ancient dream of Moscow, the Third Rome. ... Instead of the Third Rome in Russia, the Third International was achieved, and many of the features of the Third Rome pass over to the Third International. The Third International is also a Holy Empire, and it also is founded on an Orthodox faith. The Third International is not international, but a Russian national idea"" Secondly, according to some other historians (let's say Abdurakhman Avtorkhanov and Yuri Felshtinsky), that was all due to the political system based on the power of secret services, rather than of the Communist party. That second point was captured by Mikhail Lermontov in his Farewell, Unwashed Russia in 19th century already. Only these two important points/trends (rather than communist ideology) can explain the aggressive course by Russian government today. Overall, the historical analogy here is obviously Third Reich [5], [6]. My very best wishes (talk) 01:32, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

P.S. I am not going to be around these subjects for a few reasons. Good luck. My very best wishes (talk) 05:18, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
That's interesting, I've not considered that viewpoint, and certainly one of the causes beyond ideology or leadership that led to the mass killings that occurred under some communist regimes. I'll have to look into it further. Hope you will be back soon as things are resolved for you, as you have great insight and perspective. Take care. --Nug (talk) 18:31, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
One of these reasons: I do not want to be a part of editing any pages that will deliver a blatant misinformation to a reader (and these pages definitely will deliver misinformation based on discussions, POV and the level of understanding of such subjects by participants, etc.). But more important, I must focus on my work. I am so far behind ... [7]. My very best wishes (talk) 19:54, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

Correction to previous election announcement

Just a quick correction to the prior message about the 2022 MILHIST coordinator election! I (Hog Farm) didn't proofread the message well enough and left out a link to the election page itself in this message. The voting will occur here; sorry about the need for a second message and the inadvertent omission from the prior one. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 17:41, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
