WikiCup announcements. NOT.

I don't think it appropriate for you to spam WikiCup announcements to WikiProjectss. Most of the other messages spammed to WikiProjects either related to WikiProject management in general or to tools available to WikiProjects. In other words, I don't see how the WikiCup assists WikiProjects, or how WikiProjects should assist the WikiCup. If you cannot explain reasoning why they should be there, please do not do it again, and, if possible, try to remove the sections you've spammed. The only reason I haven't removed it from two of the WikiProjects I'm active in is that my bandwidth or connection time is limited, and WP:UNDO doesn't work on large pages, such as WikiProject talk pages. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 04:08, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for your opinion. Those notices were deliberately posted to the WikiProjects whose subjects have featured heavily in the WikiCup over the years as well as several highly active projects who have been under represented in an attempt to work against systematic bias in the production of featured content. I see the WikiCup assisting WikiProjects by providing an means of encouragement to editors to enter into content creation/improvement as well as a sense of achievement to those editors, which in turn encourages retention. There was no intention to cause offence, and while it may seem like spamming because of these targetted posts in some areas (particulary the sciences), I never sought to add these notices to all Projects or even what can been seen as a majority of them. Wikicup: What the fuck?!

What the fuick are you even thinking? You ignored all discussion, you ignored the vote going against what you implemented, you pulled a one FP per article rule out of your ass, with no discussion whatsoever on it...

This is a travesty. I'm seriously considering nominating the Wikicup for WP:MFD over this, because it seems to be more divisive than helpful now. Adam Cuerden (talk) 18:30, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

Adam, let me be clear. J and Ed put up with a lot of stuff from you last year. I am far less inclined. While I have no issue whatsoever with you posting your views on the Cup talk page, a personal attack such as this on my talk page will not be tolerated and will result in you being kicked out of the Cup if it is repeated. Miyagawa (talk) 20:31, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
Look, let me put this bluntly, but more politely. I am very, very upset that you ignored pretty much every consensus actually reached about FPs. And I cannot see any merit or consensus in any of your changes: the bonus scheme is ruined by changing the hard-won agreement on the base to start the bonus scheme from from 30 to 20. People voted 4:1 to keep sets from being devalued; you added rules to state one image per article can get points, apparently not knowing, or just ignoring, what a set was - a set of images, usually from a single article.
Nergaal, I, and others spent most of a month trying to create a compromise on FPs that all of us were happy with. And this was ignored. The only thing implemented in it was the bonus scheme, which was meant to soften the blow of a reduction of base and set FP points by keeping the most valuable images at or even above the old value. Instead, only a tiny, tiny, TINY proportion of images will even come close to the old value.
Hell, the one FP per article rule isn't even enforceable in any but the most trivial cases: If image A is in articles 1, 2, and 3, and image B in articles 2 and 3, does B get points? Propagate that question over all possible and extremely common possibilities, and see if you can still get a sensible rule out of it.
I hope this makes my objections and upset clear, and explains my annoyance. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:11, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
How about let's keep this on the WikiCup page, where everyone can see the discussions, eh? --AmaryllisGardener talk 21:34, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Re: Morality play

As above, it's unusual for a TNG episode to be a blatent morality play (although I think that the show works best when they are).

Heh. I'm not going to give up so easily. :-) I just ran across this Brannon Braga quote you might like: "Every episode and movie of Star Trek is a morality tale in which human beings find solutions to conflict through enlightenment and reason. Through science. Through wit and intellect. Through a belief in our potential as animals that can supercede our baser instincts." Viriditas (talk) 06:54, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

I'd argue that certainly Voyager and Enterprise wandered off from the morality play trail quite a few times - although I think that DS9 was chock full of them. Miyagawa (talk) 09:16, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
I don't know if that's true about Voyager, but yes, something changed with Enterprise. Although I certainly enjoyed Enterprise, the pacing, editing, and direction was "off" compared to earlier Trek shows, and somewhere along the line, the important aspects of the morality play got lost or subsumed into less important aspects of the narrative. To me, at least, I felt like their wonderful cast was held back and prevented from being truly great. I noticed there were serious problems with the dialogue, for example, in Daedalus. So perhaps the writing is to blame. Viriditas (talk) 19:47, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
There was a lot of crappy studio involvement in Enterprise. For starters the entire premise of the first season was changed (although I don't know if it was for the better or worse), then they started trying to shoehorn awful ideas in - there was a running thing about they wanted bands to be able to appear via a holodeck of some sorts in order to attract younger viewers (I wish I was kidding). There was an improvement in seasons three and four, but season two killed the show. If you want to watch some awful Trek, pick some random episodes from there. But some episodes are tremedous on Enterprise - Manny Coto's first writing job is a stand out for me - make sure you watch "Similitude" at some point. Miyagawa (talk) 12:54, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Submissions

@Miyagawa: When do you check submissiions for WikiCup. Because I have a submission and my points total isn't updated. Yoshi24517Chat Absent 18:09, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

It would be automatically added to the table based by the bot. However, I'm afraid that since the review hasn't yet been closed then the review isn't valid for points. Additionally, it falls foul of the very short rule based on the section you added - so it wouldn't count even if it had been closed already. Miyagawa (talk) 21:37, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
@Miyagawa: Just a quick question. Isn't it supposed to be 1000 bytes though? Yoshi24517Chat Absent 21:57, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
The scoring guidelines state "As a rough guide, no review shorter than 1000 bytes will be considered, though the judges reserve the right to remove other short reviews. This is not to say that such short reviews are not worthwhile, it is merely to say that they will not be recognised in this competition." The paragraph you added to the review was just over a thousand, but your second edit appeared to be padding to take it over the 1000 limit. That's just my personal opinion. Hi, can I submit this one at here? Regards, --Khadar Khani (talk) 15:34, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

@Sahara4u: If it'd been nominated in 2015 then there wouldn't be a problem as you did enough work on it to say it's significant (anyone who says that formatting tables isn't significant needs to try it!!). However the scoring rules state "Content must have been worked on and nominated during the competition" - which means the nomination needed to happen during 2015 in order to qualify I'm afraid. Miyagawa (talk) 16:01, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
This was nominated on 9 December 2014, but promoted on 18 January 2015! --Khadar Khani (talk) 16:34, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Exactly, according to the rules, the nomination needs to take place during one of the cup rounds for that year. The promotion can then happen in any round (i.e. you could nominate in round 3 and not be promoted to round 5 and then claim in the points in round 5). As it was nominated on 9 December 2014, the FL wasn't nominated during the 2015 cup as that didn't start until 1 January 2015. Miyagawa (talk) 16:56, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

Guidance on content for Wikicup 2015

Hello,

I am bit new to the Wikicup, but very much interested and excited about this. I am still trying to figure out if any of my contributions (which you deleted from my submission list Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2015/Submissions/Vishal0soni actually hold some place across the various listed categories (if not in GAR & PR). Or if you could provide some guidance on approaching towards some good content valid for this contest, that would be helpful. Thanks, Vishal0soni (talk) 07:42, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

Ok. Well the WikiCup is generally geared towards promoting recognised content. So while for example, you wouldn't get any points for creating a new article - if you then took that article through the Did You Know process, then you could gain points for that. Likewise, if that article meets the requirements for a Good Article and is then reviewed by another user as meeting those requirements, then again points can be gained. The Peer Reviews are based on reviewing articles where a user has requested a review at Wikipedia:Peer review. I hope this helps, a full summary is covered at the Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring page. GA Cup - The Finals

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 5/Final

GA Cup competitors and observers: Get ready, we're about to move into the finals of the inaugural GA Cup! Not nearly as important as another competition taking place this weekend, but significant none the less. No deflated footballs here, though!

Thursday saw the end of Round 4. Out of the 8 contestants in the semi-finals, 5 have moved to the finals. The semi-finals continued to be very competitive. The highest scorer overall was Ritchie333 from Pool B, with an impressive 488 points and a total of 36 articles reviewed, the most of any competitor; close behind was Jaguar (last round's wildcard), with 477 points and 29 reviews. At times, the competition between them was a real horse-race, and exciting for the judges to witness. Both Ritchie333 and Jaguar have moved onto the finals. In Pool A, Good888 with 294 points, and Wizardman with 179 also won slots in the final. 3family6 with 285 points, won the wildcard slot. We also had one withdrawal, due to outside-of-Wikipedia priorities. Congrats to all!

Although there were just 8 competitors, more reviews were conducted this round than in any other round—148, which demonstrates the commitment and enthusiasm of our participants. The most successful competitors, like in all previous rounds, reviewed articles that languished in the queue at GAC for at least five months (worth 18 points). The Boat Race articles were popular review choices again, with almost 20% of the articles reviewed this month.

In other news, we received another report from GA statistics page maintainer User:AmericanLemming. See here [1] for his take on the effect the GA Cup has had on Good Article reviews. He believes that we've made a real difference. AmericanLemming says: "As you can see, ...the GA Cup has done wonders when it comes to getting the oldest nominations reviewed much sooner thanks to the system whereby you get the most points for reviewing the oldest articles." Everyone involved with this competition, especially the competitors, should be very proud of what we've been able to accomplish!

The Final will start on February 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on February 26 at 23:59:59 UTC with a winner being crowned. Information about the Final can be found here.

Good luck to all our finalists!
