I had art stolen from me once, it was horrible. edit

No mention in this article about how "I had fun once, it was horrible" was lifted directly from a Kate Beaton comic, without any attribution or royalties from merch sales? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.178.225.2 (talk) 00:31, 7 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Juarez and Maximilian: Serious Juarez - "I had fun once and it was awful". Whoever slapped the tag on the cat pic may or may not have read the Beaton comic, that would need to be established - David Gerard (talk) 20:25, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Am I the only one to believe that the name of the cat "Tard" is a retcon because the reality would be politically incorrect? Who names their cat "Tartar Sauce"?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.222.100.87 (talk) 06:04, 29 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

The cat's name is "Tardar Sauce". It seems reasonable to call her "Tard" for short. -- Winkelvi 07:13, 29 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
The story is that Tabatha's daughter thought the fur looked like tarar sauce. CallawayRox (talk) 19:16, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I agree with the OP, I believe it's a retcon. It's not 'tardar sauce', it's 'tartar sauce'. The word 'Tard', however, is an actual slang for mental retardation. There's no proof, but I've always felt something was fishy about the name and the explanation of it.198.217.64.38 (talk) 21:05, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, but the spelling is with a 'd', not a 't'. People give all kinds of unusual names and spellings of those unusual names to their animals. if reliable sources say it's with a 'd', then that's the way it needs to stay. -- Winkelvi 10:52, 6 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Dude, of course it's a revision of history. They named the cat "Tard", because omg lol, the cat looks mentally retarded, then it became famous, and then they were like "Oh crap, we now have a famous cat with a really offensive name. Quick, come up with some semi-plausible modification to the name and a story about how she got that name!" Honestly, I wish more people would call out the owners for the name: it's not cool. Geoff Olynyk (talk) 14:33, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
That certainly puts a sinister undertone to it. Wimpyguy (talk) 12:54, 26 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Jokes aside, seriously, Grumpy Cat is a famous, out-going kitty, and yet there couldn't have been a better Creative Commons picture taken of her than the really grainy one available on the article right now? Someone really needs to up the ante here, as I surmise we will have many more years of Grumpiness. Hope(N Forever) (talk) 05:26, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

That's actually the best of the shots from that stream. But yes, a better picture would be nice. I wonder if we asked nicely, we could get a good official shot released under a free licence ... - David Gerard (talk) 15:14, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Manager edit

"Ben Lashes is Grumpy Cat's manager who also represents Keyboard Cat and Nyan Cat." Really? Nyan Cat? He manages a looping animation of a flying cat made out of a poptart? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.244.230.178 (talk) 01:45, 6 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes? If there's money to be made, there's usually a manager and trademarks/copyrights involved. It makes sense that Nyan cat is protected for this very reason. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 18:55, 15 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Owner edit

Grumpy Cat's owner was just changed in the infobox from Tabatha to Bryan, but I'm not sure which sibling actually owns her, and I've found sources saying it's both ways. Which one should it be listed as? As of now, the article contradicts itself about the owner. Supernerd11 :D Firemind ^_^ Pokedex 01:12, 10 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Tabitha is the owner according to sources. EvergreenFir (talk) 02:47, 10 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Tabatha is in fact the owner of Grumpy Cat, Bryan is her older brother, who took the first famous photo of Grumpy, and posted it on Reddit. [1]— Preceding unsigned comment added by Moonlightmedicine (talkcontribs) 07:58, 3 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

$1,000,000 edit

Just heard on the news tonight that stories that this cat has made $1,000,000 are false; not sure if this pertains to the $1,000,000 figure in our article or not. —Steve Summit (talk) 22:45, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Scs: Links or sources?
I looked this up, Grumpy Cat Definitely Did Not Make $100 Million, the owner later refuted the silly figure of $100m. is denying that this is her pet’s annual paycheck.--Otterathome (talk) 16:16, 24 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge with Ben Lashes edit

The result of this discussion was to not merge. Kollision (talk) 10:20, 6 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

All third-party sources are about subjects management of Grumpy Cat, and nothing much else. Otterathome (talk) 16:18, 24 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Oppose. The Grumpy Cat article is kind of small as it is. Merging in Lashes' information would end up having information about him taking about a third of Grumpy Cat's article space which would cause undue weight. I'm perfectly fine with the situation as it now stands, with Lashes having his own article where the minutiae about his career can remain. Marteau (talk) 16:25, 24 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. Anyone searching for Tarder Sauce or Grumpy cat is interested in the cat not the publicist. C.B (talk) 10:25, 25 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Oppose: Grumpy Cat decidedly needs to be left as a stand alone article and so does the article on Ben Lashes. Even when the manager Ben Lashes has faded away into obscurity, readers will still be looking up Grumpy Cat. Fylbecatulous talk 19:33, 26 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Oppose It just doesn't make sense to merge a manager of multiple talents into a section of the article of one of his talents. That would be like having a Sony Pictures section in the article for the Spider-Man movie. If both subjects are notable they should have separate articles. Name origin -- "Retard" edit

So why doesn't the article mention this? The owners backpedaled when the cat got famous and changed it's name to Tardar Sauce. And yes, the 'd' in the name was their deliberate misspelling and a nod to the original name. Are we still pretending this never happened? --RThompson82 (talk) 08:06, 12 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

@RThompson82: Need reliable sources that say that. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 13:37, 12 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

We all know the cat was given a nasty name that was 'modified' when she became famous, but 'proving' that in the wiki sense is difficult. LeapUK (talk) 09:05, 11 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

By "know" you mean "believe"/"guess"/"suspect" or something similar. If it is widely known, as you state, a reliable source would surely have mentioned it by now. - SummerPhDv2.0 16:16, 20 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Oh, so a special needs cat called "tard" just does not make it obvious? LeapUK (talk) 10:35, 17 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
The earliest archive of their tumblr page has Tard in the title and URL, as do their other social media pages from that time. However, the posts refer to her as Tardar Sauce. Albeit this is some 6 months after her birth, so they could have made the change in that time: https://web.archive.org/web/20121013013934/http://tardthegrumpycat.tumblr.com/ --Lead holder (talk) 09:54, 16 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
