Vulgate article: content and apocrypha

Leszek

I wonder if you could find an opportunity to cast your skilled eyes over the Vulgate discussion page. The article needs a section on content; which books were in which Vulgate tradition at which time; and which were not. Unfortunately there is not much that we have been able to find that discusses this matter, but your expertise on codicology may well sort it out easily (I hope). Thus far, we seem to have established that - as compared to the Greek bible - the Vulgate in its earliest pandect form (broadly as surviving in Amiatinus) contained the standard New Testament of 27 books (occasionally also including Laodeceans). The Old Testament we think conformed to the LXX other than in omitting Esdras A (i.e. 3 Esdras) and Baruch. Over the medieval period first Baruch, then Esdras 3, then Esdras 4, then Prayer of Manasseh get commonly (but not invariably)added. But who added them and when? We think that Theodulf is responsible for adding Baruch, but what about the Esdras books, and what about Prayer of Manasseh? These same books also tended to be added in Spain, but was this independent of developments in France?

Four detailed points in particular remain unclear:

a. Does the Codex Amiatinus miss not only Baruch but also the Letter of Jermiah?; b. what is the nature of the Codex Sangermanensis 0319 codex that is said to be the source for most later Vulgate texts of Esdras 3 and Esdras 4?. Is it a pandect, and if so which books are included in it? c. what is the nature of the mass-produced Paris 13th century text, does it include Baruch, Esdras 3, Esdras 4 and the Prayer of Manasseh; and what about Laodeceans and Psalm 151? d. which text is the source for the Mazarin Bible?

Are you able to point to a reliable published scholarly discussion of these issues?

There is an aticle on Wikipedia on Codex Sangermanensis which I am finding most confusing, but I am coming to the opinion that two manuscripts of that name are being conflated there. The uncial Sangermanensis 0319 is an 9th century diglot with the text of Paul, now in Petersburg; while there is a Latin Sangermanensis that is a 9th century pandect in Paris, and which is designated G in the Vulgate NT, and S in the Vulgate OT. For our purposes, it is the latter that is important, as it appears to be the first pandect that includes both 3 Esdras and 4 Esdras. All late medieval witnesses to 4 Esdras derive from S, (readily demonstrated because they all demonstrate a lacuna conrresponding to missing leaf in S). Bensley found in Amiens an additional 9th century mancuscript from Corbie, tht he called A; which consuists of five books of Ezra: Vulgate Ezra/Nehemiah as one book, 3 Esdras as a second book, and 4 Esdras as three books. This would support 3 Esdras and 4 Esdras as being included in the Vulgate at Corbie in this period. Subsequent to the publication of Bensley's discovery in 1895, about half a dozen other 9th/10th century independent witnesses to the Latin text of 4 Esdras were reported.

From this I conclude that 3 Esdras and 4 Esdras began to be included in some Vulgates in the 9th century, but that this remained rare until large-scale production of pocket editions of the Vulgate bible developed in Paris in the 13th century; when S served as the exemplar for the 3 Esdras and 4 Esdras Paris texts. Please note that the sources very clearly say "the Mazovian language". Poland is culturally and linguistically a rich country. If you think the statements are incorrect, explain exactly why. The resources are excellent. They are written by people who lived in the past when Mazovian was more common. The "mentorship process" section lays out approximately what will be expected of you as a mentor. If you'd like, you can also volunteer to be the coordinating online ambassador for a class or two.

Please add yourself to the top of the list of available mentors, and note the number of students you think you'd like to mentor next term (it doesn't have to be a final answer, this is just to help with matching students and mentors once the students start getting active) and if you'd like to take on the coordination role for any classes note that as well: Wikipedia:Online_Ambassadors/Mentors (Don't add yourself to the lower "Additional online ambassadors section; that's for ambassadors-in-training and ambassadors who are already mentoring all the the students they want to take on.)

To coordinate between Online Ambassadors and Campus Ambassadors, we've been using a Google Group as a mailing list. It's not required, but almost all the ambassadors are on it. Would you like me to subscribe you? Email me with your email address if so.

The key things we look for are: regular activity (so that we can be confident they'll keep up with their mentoring role for the whole term), friendliness, and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones). Marking articles students are working on

Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

Gospel of Matthew

Welcome. I have come across your work and it has been great.

This has been my first bad experience at Wikipedia. (See reflections on my talk page). It started a couple of months ago when I began to work on the Hebrew Gospel. I am stepping back from this article.

I am a firm believer that an article must be written from a NPOV and be based on reliable sources. This article has two difficult areas.

• First issue: Did Matthew write a Gospel? As I pointed out on the talk page, there are many reliable sources that say the answer is yes. There is considerable historical evidence that Matthew wrote the Hebrew Gospel which was in wide circulation up to the time of Constantine.

• Second issue: What is the relationship of Matthew's Hebrew Gospel to the Gospel of Matthew found in the Bible? Here the reliable sources are divided into three:

1. The Roman Catholic and conservative position is that the Gospel of Matthew is a Greek translation of the Hebrew Gospel.
2. Liberal scholars argue that the Gospel of Matthew was composed in Greek, and therefore could not be based on the Hebrew Gospel, but rather it was composed much later by an unknown redactor.
3. The third position agrees with liberal scholars that the Gospel of Matthew is not genuine. However, they argue that the Hebrew Gospel was authentic and the basis for the other gospels in varying degrees.

Changing hyphens

I have noticed you changing dashes to hyphens in aircraft articles, not sure that is a good idea while the hyphen question is being discussed and I believe a moratorium on changing dashes to hyphens or the other way in article titles [1] perhaps you should consider waiting for the outcome of these discussions, also refer Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/dash drafting, thanks. Egypt monastery name.

Hi, Leszek!

I notice, that you seem to have a lot of knowledge about bible-related manuscripts. I'm not more than an amateur with rather limited knowledge in this field; but I've tried to do a little to some of our wp articles, anyhow. I've run into a problem, when trying to find and link to the appropriate backgrounds for several "Syrian" documents. Noting this old editing of yours, I hope that you can help me.

There is a collection of about 500 Aramaic manuscripts, which the British Museum "acquired" in the 1840's. From the external links I've found, and from the wp articles of some of them, it is clear that they came from a convent/covenant/monastery in Egypt, named after "Saint Mary Deipara". I've tried to find information about it. Finally, the clues pointed to what wp calls "the Syrian Monastery, Egypt".

Actually, I now strongly suspect that "the convent or covenant or monastery of Saint Mary Deipara", "the Monastery of the Most Holy Virgin Mary", "the Syrian Monastery", and "Deir al-Surian", are one and the same place. I wonder, if you are able to confirm or reject this. I also wonder, which name you would suggest as the most appropriate title for the page. (All names of the same place should be mentioned early in the article, and redirects should be made from the alternative names. However, there is some value in having either the most common name, or the most appropriate name from an academic point of view,as article name.)

This sentence is still not clear - "N ephelkystikon before a consonant 3 times, 2 times it lacks before hiatus.". I am not sure if it is a grammar/translation issue, or a technical issue. My suggestions would be "A moveable n occured before a consonant 3 times, and two times it occured without a hiatus" or something along those lines, but I can't say I understand the linguistics - how can there be a hiatus if it is occuring before a consonant? Ambassador Program: assessment drive

Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.

In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.

Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.

Oxyrhynchus papyri

Dear Dr. Jańczuk,

I notice that you are attempting to create pages for each Oxyrhynchus papyrus. This is quite an undertaking, even greater than all the fantastic work that you've done with Biblical papyri. I do have a few formatting concerns. First, "P.Oxy." is an abbreviation for "Papyrus Oxyrhynchita", not "Papyrus Oxyrhynchus". It also seems that the most common search term would be the abbreviation: "P.Oxy." Would you mind if I renamed your creations to P.Oxy. #, and would you consider titling your further articles on this topic "P.Oxy. #"? Also, in English language scholarship we most commonly refer to ancient manuscripts that are not codices as "rolls" (not "scrolls"). Would you mind if I changed this in the papyrological pages that you have created? In addition to these points, I am a papyrologist and will be very happy to help in any way that I can with your project. Please just let me know. Also, I am amazed at the brilliant work that you have done on Wikipedia over the past few years.

Online Ambassadors: Time to join pods

Hello! If you're planning to be an active Online Ambassador for the upcoming academic term, now is the time to join one or more pods. (A pod consists of the instructor, the Campus Ambassadors, and the Online Ambassadors for single class.) The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) explains the expectations for being part of a pod as an Online Ambassador. (The MOU for pods in Canada is essentially the same.) In short, the role of Online Ambassadors this term consists of:

• Working closely with the instructor and Campus Ambassadors, providing advice and perspective as an experienced Wikipedian
• Helping students who ask for it (or helping them to find the help they need)
• Watching out for the class as a whole
• Helping students to get community feedback on their work

This replaces the 1-on-1 mentoring role for Online Ambassadors that we had in previous terms; rather than being responsible for individual students (some of whom don't want or help or are unresponsive), Online Ambassadors will be there to help whichever students in their class(es) ask for help.

You can browse the upcoming courses here: United States; Canada. More are being added as new pods become active and create their course pages.

Once you've found a class that you want to work with—especially if you some interest or expertise in the topic area—you should sign the MOU listing for that class and get in touch with the instructor. We're hoping to have at least two Online Ambassadors per pod, and more for the larger classes.

If you're up for supporting any kind of class and would like me to assign you to a pod in need of more Online Ambassadors, just let me know.

Update on courses and ambassador needs

Hello, Ambassadors!

I wanted to give you one last update on where we are this term, before my role as Online Facilitator wraps up at the end of this week. Already, there are over 800 students in U.S. classes who have signed up on course pages this term. About 40 classes are active, and we're expecting that many more again once all the classes are up and running.

Codex Frisingensia Fragmenta

Comma Johanneum

(Note: this is largely long-term thoughts.. simply sharing for your consideration since you know the article reasaonably well.)

Also there are a couple of major "section" aspects in the Comma Johanneum aspect that I think needs drastic action, however as a relative newbie my actions are more involved in simply tweaking text (simple errors corrected) and adding more factual backdrop, which had been lacking in the article, which is top-heavy with doctrinal POV.

One is the Erasmus section, which is largely a duplicate of a separate page on the Textus Receptus. Shouldn't all the duplication be eliminated ? The other article referenced, and only the part that is specific to the verse retained. For the CJ article, it is a lot of chaff mostly extraneous.

Two is the grammatical section disaster, which is largely POV and factually on a mediocre level at best. It is attempted "original research" by Jim, who developed his ideas on the Internet. Rather than get into textual-revert battles, I plan a separate web page article, but I think the admin Wikipedia folks should see that this is almost entirely POV and a convoluted attempt at original research. (In the past is has been noted that his writing is virtually incomprehensible, unreadable. Making attempts at improvement very difficult.) Anyway ... I may make some factual contributions on the grammar section .. however, after working in other areas, in order to not get diverted with revert battles.

Separately, I do plan a short paragraph added on the overall historical aspect of the Comma, which I think you will appreciate. Probably place it in tomorrow.

Hope you do not mind these thoughts here. I have a copy if they should be elsewhere and you want to delete. e.g. They could be in CJ or email or my page.

As I said at User talk:Cardiffchestnut, I'm sorry you're thinking of not continuing with the articles on the papyri. I do think they're wonderful, and I don't mind editing along behind you on them. By the way, if you haven't already, could you take a look at Papyrus Oxyrhynchus 47? I changed the name of the author based on Grenfell and Hunt, but you know far more about it than I do, so I'd feel better if you looked at it. Just butting in to say that I agree with alf.laylah.wa.laylah, that all these articles you've created are worthwhile and notable (all the one's I've looked at, anyway). The discussion does seem to be heading in the direction of keep, but either way I hope you'll continue all your work in this area (I'll take short articles written on interesting things by people who know what they're talking about over articles on schools or TV shows any day).
