Transponder

I could use your help editing one word in the entry for the film No Country for Old Men. There is a device called a 'transponder' that appears in the movie. I'm not sure if both the signal sender and the signal receiver should both be transponders.

Sailplane edits

I'd like to clarify with you so we don't get into an edit battle regarding spoilers on sailplanes. To clarify my position, I have a couple thousand hours of glider time, mostly instructing. I believe spoilers are only mounted on the top of the wing with a primary function to spoil lift across a section of wing and provide only minimal drag. A Schweizer 2-22 has only spoilers. Just a piece of aluminum that hinged at the front that tips up to spoil the lift with hardly any drag. Dive brakes, on the other hand, protrude enough into the airstream to provide drag as well as spoil the lift. Dive brakes can protrude just from the top also acting as spoilers. Or they can also protrude from the bottom. A 2-33 had dive brakes with only a spoiler on top (like the 2-22) but with another 'board' hinged at the rear and protruding out the bottom. Also, 'terminal dive brake' is a correct term though I suppose they should be called "terminal velocity dive brakes" and should not be deleted. The 1-34 has terminal dive brakes. Was this a prediction made because of the AAH? I don't think we can use a 2005 BBC audio play-back as proof of this, we need something published.

How about a new section after "Criticisms" Proof of the AAH - Almost no proof of the AAH has been presented and little can be expected; as Morgan says, it would be very difficult to look at the fossilised skeletons of an otter and a stoat and establish that one of them was aquatic.(p.174 of Scars) And theories need to make predictions to be of interest; it was already known that the Rift Valley fossil sites were wetter than today and that Lucy's almost complete skeleton was found amongst the remains of crocodile eggs, turtle eggs and crab claws. In 1985 a revisit of the Taung baby site concluded that it had been humid, not arid as it is today.(p.18 of Scars) Elaine Morgan might have predicted such findings, but wasn't asked, paleoanthropologists still work the same as if there was no AAH. Yes though it was the Attenborough and the BBC that initiated it. OK, add the section if you like, though there is a risk that the article becomes a debating forum, as it has before. I see you have placed a PROD template on this page, with the reason "An unnecessary duplication by a new user. The main Alice Liddell article still exists". I agree that the page should go, and I have blanked it and requested a speedy delete under CSD U1. My original reason for creating this page no longer applies, so thank you for prompting me to deal with it. However, I thought it might be helpful to mention that "only articles, lists, and disambiguation pages may be deleted using the Proposed deletion process" (quoted from WP:PROD); it does not apply to a userspace page. Hi again. Thanks for your note. I find that very first ep of An Unearthly Child a remarkable piece of TV sci fi. Even all these years later it is fascinating. Those who saw it originally must have wondered what they had just experienced. Katy M is a treat. In her DVD commentary for the last ep of The Green Death she is almost in tears remembering how special her time on the show was. I don't know if you've ever seen Life Story. It makes the story of the discovery of the structure of DNA very exciting. The Delarue music is used twice. Once in the scene where Crick and Watson are showing their colleagues the finished model of DNA and again at the end of the film where it is played during the closing credits. I have never been able to tell for sure but I think that they recorded a new version of the song rather then just using the one from Day For Night. Though I could be wrong about this the play time seems longer - especially the time it is played at the end of the film - and is played at a slightly slower speed. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find it on DVD and my tape is getting older. Back in '06 it accompanied a set of film clips during the Academy Awards telecast and it was this thread at IMDb [2] that lead me to the CD. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 04:04, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Delerue Update. You may have already seen this but I wanted to let you know that "Le Grand Choral" is used at a couple of points in the recent stop motion animation film Fantastic Mr. Fox. Now this film may not be the kind of thing that you enjoy but I wanted to let you know about it anyway. Also, I enjoyed the the Ron Grainer quote about Delia Derbyshire and his Dr Who theme. There is a brief but nice tribute to him on the DVD set for the series Flickers. If you haven't seen it I can't recommend this series highly enough. It is about the early days of films and features Bob Hoskins and Frances de la Tour (who are marvelous together) and aired in 1980. Wikipedia does not have a page for it and even Imdb's page [3] is lacking in detail, including the fact that Grainer wrote the music for it. Hope you are well and cheers. Personally, I don't have e-mail settings in my preferences since I'm very private with things like e-mail addresses. Even if I wasn't, I haven't had working e-mail from a provider since upgrading to broadband anyway. There are two other ways I can think of to do this. One is to make a copy of the article in your userspace, and I can come in and add tags; if this is your choice, see WP:CWW to check what attribution will be required. The other is for me to list where cites are needed on the FAR page. Please tell me which you would prefer. Sorry I can't be of more help on the e-mail front. I took your feedback to heart, and searched through my raw video materiel and found a slightly longer more interesting clip but it was quite bumpy. I did my best to stabilize it digitally in the software Shake and added a view from the cockpit. It's in relation to other proposed deletion closures that you'll find comments on my talk page, since I do a large number of PROD closures. It is a different point of view, from the U.S. 100 years ago. How it summarizes the information I think is interesting. There is an intermediate population figure which I don't see elsewhere. It is comforting that it confirms the trend noted in the History section. I don't think it is needed, but I think it is useful. The Wikisource 1911 Britannica has a Birkenhead article at this point (Encyclopædia Britannica (11th ed.). 1911. {{cite encyclopedia}}: Missing or empty |title= (help)). It is more elaborate, but it hasn't been proofread at this point, and I don't think it is ready for posting. And there is that big blank spot with no in-line links. Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this: |image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]], instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do: |image=SomeImage.jpg. There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. Probably / not probably

I was looking at the change to Birkenhead by the IP and thinking that while the edit summary was inaccurate, the change was actually not that bad. I have never seen any other suggestion for the origin of the name. Any reason why 'probably' is being used, is there a rival theory? Thermals

Before I re-instate my edit of the article that I took to featured status, may I ask you to state your qualifications as a glider pilot? There are places where the thermals will last for hours. May I suggest "flows"? My image of a bubble is a spherical object created by soap. JMcC (talk) 10:17, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

However, my qualifications as a pilot should be relatively irrelevant as I thought Wikipedia relied upon referenced materials like the related wikipedia article I referenced. In any case, I have nearly 1,500 hours of soaring in a dozen or so countries with hang gliders and gliders where thermals are a significant part of our flying phenomena. I teach advanced hang glider pilots how to soar thermals and in 1977 was the first pilot to teach leading Japanese pilots how to fly long distance, including their first formal use of thermals. I've even observed butterflies soaring a thermal bubble - not a stream (not yet published). (I see you are from UK, where I loved soaring Devil's Dyke !)

I can understand your concern when thinking of a spherical bubble shape as made by soap. Thermals are actually shaped much like a doughnut; a torus. However, pilots and aviation writers most commonly call them "bubbles."

The wikipedia Thermals article says it fairly well "Generally, when the air is cold, bubbles of warm air are formed by the ground heating the air above it and can rise like a hot air balloon." "Flows" can be accurate as can "streams" for well-developed specific (some would say excellent) conditions; and they can indeed last for hours. However, both terms ignore the majority of thermals which are bubbles that form, then pop off the ground and are fairly discrete and coherent - with no connection to subsequent bubbles formed from the same place.

An atomic bomb explosion is a weak example, but it it is useful by providing a dynamic visual depiction of how a thermal forms. The initial heat on the ground soon rises to make a mushroom cloud. Soon after the cloud becomes coherent and disconnects from its ground heated source. Even when normal solar-generated thermals are making streams or flows, they typically generate enough clouds that they cut off the solar radiation causing the thermals, until the clouds adequately dissipate and the cycle restarts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DDilworth (talk • contribs) 18:54, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

Hang Gliding

If you look at the web-site of the governing body for air sports Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, you will see that there is a sport called Gliding, and another sport called Hang gliding. Gliding is a sport that uses sailplanes. Hang gliding uses foot-launched aircraft. These are quite distinct. They have their own championships at different places. The equivalent would be mixing Rugby League and Rugby Union in the same article even though they contain the same word, use the same ball and goal-posts. What links the sports, as well as other forms of flight, is that they involve Gliding flight. I think you are trying to show this link between the sports in the wrong article. You can see a comparison of the two types of aircraft in Glider (sailplane). I have been flying gliders for 36 years and I have written a book on the subject. Please acknowledge that there are people out there with more knowledge that you. The history on your talk page indicates that you find this difficult to accept. I have to preserve the quality of this featured article and so your reversion must be reverted. JMcC (talk) 08:52, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
