Abdeslam Serghini edit

Hi Peter. I am writing regarding the discussion on this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Abdeslam_Serghini I am the author of the article and I put some comments on the talk tab of that page, but no editor is responding or willing to discuss the matter further with me. I don't even know if the editors saw my comments on the talk tab. Also, I am not sure either that this is the right way of contacting you (editors don't have a visible email or clear way of how to contact them, and please ignore my ignorance on the wikipedia subject and how it works). I agree with you that the article is very badly written and I also agree with you that it should be edited and corrected and not deleted. Some of the editors keep arguing that Abdeslam Serghini may not be notable (famous). I am from Morocco, and I am an expert on the "Sufism" field and I know all the past great scholars in Morocco. I know 100% that he was a great scholar. He taught the grand-father of the current Moroccan King. The royal family in Morocco know about him. Notability is not an issue. The editor CoffeeWithMarkets even go further by saying notability is not inherited. What CoffeeWithMarkets does not know is that those influential figures in Morocco, most of them were the student of Abdesslam Serhini, and it was the professor who taught them the activism and the one who initiated the movement in the first place. The reason the students were more famous later and more mentioned on the Internet than their professor, that is a different story, which I can explain in a different place (not here). Concerning the non-relevant (or bad) references I included in the article (some of them were mirrored by other sites, which I did not know) is because one editor told me that only English and French references can be included. I could not find any good source in English or French to include. There are however a great number of sources in Arabic, but I was not allowed to include them. I also mentioned in my comments that I have the book of Abdesslam Serghini (one of his many lectures was recorded and published as book. The book includes a detailed official biography). I am willing to upload the book, and collaborate in anyway needed to make the article well written. However, and very unfortunate, I am not hearing anything from the editors. Please advise me what to do. I have a huge respect and love for this great scholar and he deserves to be on wikipedia. I can even contact the royal family in Morocco and provide a confirmation from them that he was a very notable great scholar.

Thanks Peter. I can be notified by email at sid.hbm@gmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sid.bm (talkcontribs) 19:23, 30 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

University of Leeds accommodation edit

Peter You contributed to the deletion discussion last year. I have hopefully improved the article and would appreciate your comment. I am considering renaming it University of Leeds halls of residence although Nottingham uses upper case H and R? I have added to the list and included partnership buildings as there will probably be 100% privatization eventually. Keomike (talk) 17:33, 26 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Post Towns in the US edit

I wish we had this term in the U.S. because many people in rural areas identify strongly with their mailing address "city" even if they live far outside their city limits. For instance, I'm rewriting the Felton, Delaware article and 90%+ of the population who identifies as living in Felton is outside the municipal limits and that's hard to explain to an (urban) American reader. Hi, I'm an AFC reviewer, I have just declined the above-mentioned draft. I see you had previously (in February 2014) been involved with helping the draft-writer. I left a review note briefly explaining the problem. I hope you could help as it certainly looks like a worthwhile article - if the terminology problem can be resolved. I think WikiProjects such as Technology, Mining or Archaeology could also be of assistance. (Removing the "discussion" above the start of the actual article to the Talk page would help "declutter" the page. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:46, 26 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

A name of the category edit

Hello. Wich variant for category's name is better and more correct in the English language - cooling system of blast furnace or blast furnace cooling system? I'm going to create this category in the Wikimedia Commons. Thank you. Blast furnace chip worker (talk) 18:33, 22 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

The name of the profession edit

Hello. Look, please, on the upper left corner of this picture File:The Pennsylvania railroad. What is the English name of the profession of those men who are on the top of the blast furnace and charge it? Dictionaries I have do not contain this word. How do you call a wheelbarrow on their hands? Have it a specific name or not? Blast furnace chip worker (talk) 16:38, 25 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • I assume the men are filling a blast furnace. If so, I would call them "fillers". I am not sure that there is a specific name for the barrow, though I suspect that it would have a precisely defined capacity. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:53, 25 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. But have you ever seen the name of the profession in the literature? Blast furnace chip worker (talk) 17:17, 25 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
I will allow myself to trouble you once more. I'm a little surprised that the English language does not have a special name for this profession. Well, I think that there may be such a category name: "Blast furnace fillers", "Blast furnace chargers" or just "Fillers" or "Chargers". Which variant you choose? Please, answer my question, I'm going to create a category in Wiki commons just after your reply. Blast furnace chip worker (talk) 12:32, 27 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
I think I have seen them called fillers, but I cannot think where. A furnace would have a founder (who was the chief workman), a keeper to oversee the furnace when he was asleep and a couple of fillers. However this was not a particularly skilled occupation (certainly not a "profession"). He might bee referred to as a filler at a blast furnace. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:17, 28 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ok, word "fillers" is main. But wich variant is better, "Blast furnace fillers" or "Filler at a blast furnace" or "Fillers at blast furnaces"? I need your opinion as of a man who are a native-English spiker. Blast furnace chip worker (talk) 22:17, 28 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Any of these would do, buy furnace(s) should only be plural if the same man was filling several of them. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:11, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ok. Thank you for your answers. Blast furnace chip worker (talk) 18:02, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

3rd party opinion of experienced wikipedia user wanted edit

Article in question: Batn Rabigh Caravan Raid

On above article I quoted Sahih al-Bukhari, 5:57:74 . This primary source EXPLICITLY mentions Sa'd was the first to shoot an arrow for Islam,

The secondary sources in Batn Rabigh Caravan Raid also EXPLICITLY mentions Sa'd was the first to shoot an arrow for Islam.

I have been accused of violating WP:SYNTHESIS. What is your opinion, is this synthesis? --Misconceptions2 (talk) 21:29, 26 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • If that is what the sources say, I do not see why WP should not repeat them. If other serious sources say something different, or deny the event, they should presumably be referred to as well, to give a NPOV. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:17, 3 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Mike Sutton (criminologist) edit

Dear Sir,

I'm very sorry to have missed the discussion on the deletion status of the biography page on Mike Sutton (criminologist). If I had taken part, I hope that I could have contributed. Having collected 18 months worth of evidence showing multiple examples of misconduct by this individual, atrocious research abilities and extensive abuse of fellow academics, I am disappointed to see his personal page removed from the deletion list. Comprehensive refutation of his claims against Darwin and Wallace, plus many of his "myth busts" are presented via 3 websites: Reign of Error, Natural Histories, and the Patrick Matthew Project.

Sutton is very much driven by ambition and pride. His Wikipedia page fuels his egocentricity, more so than it should considering it was entirely his own composition until recently, when I began following the flagged recommendations for the page, and edited some of the self aggrandisement. However, the page should be removed as it was created and written by him at the outset, and remained so for years. He even lists his Wikipedia page and others he has created under his publications section on page 21 of his 25-page CV. I find that odd, but it is also irrefutable evidence of his hand in the matter. Furthermore, there is no question that it goes beyond the impartial outlook supposed to be enforced on Wikipedia. Please can we have another look at this case?

[Update] Sutton has been aggressively trying to get his ideas onto Wikipedia for years, taken on different anonymous accounts (there is a record of his sock puppetry), and has an anti-wikipedia editors hate campaign documented on one of his several blog sites.

Thank you and best wishes, Jfderry (talk) 17:05, 23 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

When assessing articles for "keep" or "delete," do you assess them all on whether or not they're contribution to history is sufficient, even if the purpose of the article is not based in history? As I proceed with any new articles, it'd be helpful to understand the criteria of you and other editors.--IndyNotes (talk) 17:58, 22 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your response. You said that some of the history AFDs concern historical authors and that for them you look at the significance of their body of work. In the case of Joshua Claybourn, he is under contract for a historical book, but it seems to me that the primary justification for the article has more to do with politics than history, so I was confused about why you voted to delete it on history grounds when that seemed to have little to do with the discussion. But I appreciate your response.--IndyNotes (talk) 14:20, 23 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
An author has to be a notable author before they can have an article. I judge that on the apparent quality and quantity of the work. One or two books on an obscure topic (including local history) is certainly not enough. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:51, 26 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
The point is that although he's an author, the authorship has little to do with the point of the article. Karl Rove has written books but that's not why he has a Wikipedia article, and you wouldn't judge his article based on the quality and quantity of writing.--IndyNotes (talk) 17:31, 26 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

wp:ITSACASTLE edit

Hi, thank you for your sensible comment in an AFD about a castle, a fairly long time ago now. I found my way back there just now because I subsequently wrote an essay wp:ITSACASTLE which just was nominated for deletion at MFD. I do appreciate your original intention to be selective about approval of castles, but it happens i took a lower, somewhat sarcastic mode which I personally feel is justified by AFDs about castles, museums and other public attractions which I personally feel are pretty obviously notable. Any which way now about the ongoing MFD, about your comment, thank you, and I am glad you are intelligently participating in Wikipedia. Cheers, --Doncram (talk) 05:55, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Articles for Deletion edit

Hi, I see that you took part in a discussion of the proposed deletion for an article on Frederick Goold in August 2018, and the result at the time was "no consensus". I am just letting you know that I have renominated this article for deletion here.[1]. I am contacting all contributors to that discussion to see if you wish to comment again. In my view, the additional sources provided at the time did nothing to establish notability as definied by WP. I have also proposed two others for deletion for the same reason here [2] and here [3]. Priory Grammar School edit

Thank you for your message of support for my proposal concerning the naming of the Priory Grammar School. You mention the need for an article on the Priory Grammar School for Boys, and you may well have guessed that that is what I am working on at the moment. It would be good also to have a parallel article on the girls' grammar school, but I have not yet managed to find suitable material. RoachPeter (talk) 08:27, 22 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for today's message and advice. I'm feeling a bit rudderless at the moment, as the short article I submitted on the Priory Grammar School for Boys, Shrewsbury has been turned down by the WP reviewer as not substantial enough. It's still in my sandbox, if you have a moment to give it a look - I'd value your advice on how to make it better. It could obviously be expanded as I discover more history, but it's not a great time to be making enquiries. The reviewer's suggestion that I add it to the site of Shrewsbury Sixth Form College would not work, I feel, though I have asked the College what their view would be. Worcestershire - one of England's oldest and still existing (with some minor boundary changes) ceremonial and political shires, famous for its nearly 1000 year old cathedral, the River Severn, the AONB of the Malvern Hills, some of the oldest schools in the country, England's fastest growing university, apples, pears, cider and cricket, and of course its world famous sauce. The Wikiproject is now in need of some attention. Created 12 years ago, this project amassed a huge resource for editors working on all kinds of articles and categories related in some way or another to the county. Kudpung is more or less retired from Wikipedia getting on for 2 years ago and it would be good if a group of editors could get it up to date and continue to maintain it.

People who don't exist edit

Why do you keep voting merge for people who don't exist (1, 2)? Do you even look at any given nomination for more than a split second? Avilich (talk) 00:11, 13 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

(replying here) They are, in fact, very close to hoaxes at times (I refrain from using the word because that implies bad faith on the creator's part and I cannot be certain of that), and it's not certain that those connections you mention (which would justify a merge) even exist. In this AfD, where you voted merge/redirect to husband, it's not certain that the target is in fact her husband, while in this other one, where you voted exactly the same, she was most certainly not the target's husband (subject is 100% invented). The "Aka II" one has swathes of content that appear to be 100% original research or someone else's invention, and not supported in the slightest by any reliable source which the article cites (even completely ignoring the fact that the subject most likely did not exist as a person).

A merge implies that, whether or not a topic is notable, there is information in the article that must be preserved and attributed to the original author. If the articles were freer of egregious errors and inventions, or if the connection between them and the merge targets you propose was actually reasonably well-established, a merge would be reasonable. But these ones are simply not in a good enough state to warrant what you propose, and by merging you end up perpetuating these mistakes and bits of original research. Avilich (talk) 01:37, 14 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Your misinformed decision here to support a merger of someone who doesn't exist with a person who isn't her husband led to a mistaken close and quite a discussion to overturn it. Please consider only voting merge or redirect (1) if you have the slightest understanding of what is being discussed and (2) if you can point out what content you want to merge or why the specific title deserves a redirect. Else you're just unnecessarily complicating what ought to be a simple keep vs. delete discussion, which wastes community time. Avilich (talk) 00:52, 6 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sewa Dynasty edit

At the AFD you commented "... any article should be about the polity ruled, not about the ruling dynasty." Are you suggesting that is a general principle? If so on what basis? We do, of course, have many articles on dynasties. This includes legendary ones such as Yngling, which is why I found your comment so surprising. SpinningSpark 17:46, 10 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

I am suggesting that for small polities it is important to have a historical article on the polity, before we have one on the ruling dynasty. The dynasty article will normally be a list. Such a list can appropriately be included in a wider article on the history of the polity. Peterkingiron (talk) 12:47, 11 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
I know what you are suggesting, that wasn't my question. From the lack of answer, I take it that there is no justification in guidelines for such a stand. The example I linked to is an article that has prose beyond a list and there is no corresponding article on the polity. So clearly things don't have to be the way you say they should. I've reverted your change to this page. The Statutory Instrument clearly shows the constituency was defined as containing the whole of the Rural District of Bromsgrove, not "most of" it.
