Chinese star names edit

Just a quick heads up: when you're writing articles about Chinese star names, could you please remember to add [[Category:Chinese astronomy]] at the end of the article? It creates a lot of unnecessary work for somebody else to have to find all your articles and add it after the fact. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 05:28, 10 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Apus (Traditional Chinese star name) edit

The article Apus (Traditional Chinese star name) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The article is quite short, and the information would be easier to find if it were merged into the Apus article.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Articles for deletion nomination of Apus (Traditional Chinese star name) edit

I have nominated Apus (Traditional Chinese star name), an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Apus (Traditional Chinese star name). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 08:31, 27 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Lyra (Traditional Chinese star name) and related articles edit

The article Lyra (Traditional Chinese star name) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Apparent original research which would, even if sourced, belong in the Chinese Wikipedia (and which does not fit into Wikipedia's structure of articles on Chinese constellations).

You add some star names in the "List of stars in . . ."

Removed that regard the articles without references as "original reserch".--Bay Flam (talk) 04:32, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

What User:Bay Flam means, is that all such star names needs references with the <ref></ref> tag, with links to a reliable external site that contain those star names. Both Bay Flam and I have been hunting down fake star names from a not so well-meaning editor that was active from 2004 to c:a 2007, and that have created a minor long term disruption by going undetected. If you provide external sources to your star names, as I described, then they will be accepted, but concentrate on the star articles, not on the lists of stars.
Besides, there is a source for:
in Star Names: Their Lore and Meaning: Richard Hinckley Allen: Capricornus. There might be further valid references for other of your star names. Rursus dixit. (mbork3!) 08:07, 18 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Unnecessary translation for the Administrative Villages of Jakarta edit

Dear Ilvon, I reverted all your edit for the translations of the administrative villages of Jakarta because they are unnecessary and incomplete (you only translated what you know). I admire your hard work, but for this case, it's better to leave it without any translation. If you wanted to make the article better, you can add picture of landmarks :) --Rochelimit (talk) 20:33, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please seek consensus at talk pages first edit

Please stop adding examples of navy ships etc to articles about things that have the same name. Most, if not all, of these additions will need to be reverted. They should only be added if they meet at least the following three criteria: (1) there is a cited reliable source for the information you are adding (2) it is significant to the article you are adding it to (it would not be worth adding to an article about a major mountain peak the fact that a minor ship wsa named after it, even if there was a reliable source) and crucially (3) the reliable source says that the ship is named after the object, because in most cases you will probably find both the ship and the object (mountain, star etc) are named after some other thing. In which case the ship and the mountain etc are not in fct linked at all. Thanks. hamiltonstone (talk) 21:58, 30 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Citations needed edit

Hi, I note that you have added a number of new sections on astrology to various Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States articles such as Yan (state) and Zhou Dynasty. Unless you can provide citations for these they will all be deleted as per WP:VERIFY. At the same time, all these additions redirect to Girl (Chinese constellation) which is illogical to say the least. Vathorz Prior/Posterior edit

For your information – no blame, you couldn't realistically know – Talk:Upsilon_Carinae contains a note why "star name" Vathorz/Valthorz is desinformation and a nonsential and ridiculous construction. Rursus dixit. (mbork3!) 08:15, 8 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

I also have a list of fake names consultable when inserting star names. The deal is this: everybody out there consult Wikipedia when producing their own star lists. Therefore a certain star list cannot be entirely trusted until it has been assured that the data isn't somehow copied from Wikipedia. Star Names: Their Lore and Meaning provides a link to an 1899 author, there was no Wikipedia then, some other lists are conservative and doesn't include spurious material, for example Islamic Crescent project. A crude measure whether to use a certain external source could be to see if any name from my fake-list occurs in that source. If so, don't use it please! Rursus dixit. Your editing of ... edit

Kaou Pih (夾白) for ζ Dor and Kin Yu (金魚) for ε Dor
Ma Wei (馬尾) for δ Cen and Ke Kwan (騎官) for κ Cen

Toponomy > Toponym edit

Dear Ilvon, I take back my words about the toponym information for the administrative villages. I see that your addition about toponyms are actually good. I do hope that you could post the reference for all kind of things you added to the article. Reference is very important, and I don't see many Indonesians taking great importance in placing references in articles. (did you get everything from Saudagar Baghdad dari Betawi?)

I particularly like how do you place the toponym information in the Pal Meriam article. Just remember that there is no "toponomy" in english, it's toponym.

PS: I like astronomy too :)--Rochelimit (talk) 16:41, 13 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Removing Cilandak toponym edit

Dear Ilvon. I just removed the toponym information from Cilandak because you didn't put the citation about the "Landak River". I tried to find a reference about "Landak River", but couldn't find any. If you find one, you can placed this section back to the article. remember, it's toponym, not toponomy. --Rochelimit (talk) 08:49, 18 January 2011 (UTC) PS: is that your message on the top. "Chinese Astronomy" info in every Western constellations edit

Dear Ilvon. I see that you made an extra infos to every western constellations regarding their relation with the ancient Chinese constellation. I don't feel like that particular section really belongs to the western constellation... it seems that it should actually be in its own article. So I asked you to please remove that extra information from every single western constellations before somebody else done it. It doesn't feel right. --Rochelimit (talk) 20:22, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Redundant links edit

Dear Ilvon, I just undid a change you made to Andromeda (Chinese astronomy). It really isn't necessary to add links for each of the asterisms if they just point to the mansions (because there are already links to the mansions). In fact, it may even cause confusion, because a reader will click on an asterism but be brought to a mansion. More information is not always better.

I have been (slowly) removing these links from the constellation articles, but not all are done yet. I see that you've started to make new articles, and it would be better if these did not include redundant links for the asterisms to begin with. Thanks. BW95 (talk) 15:46, 14 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Also add stars and planets to list of extrasolar planets edit

Just like you add new planetary host stars to list of stars by constellation, you should also add new stars and planets to list of exoplanetary host stars, list of planetary systems, list of extrasolar planets detected by radial velocity, list of transiting extrasolar planets, list of extrasolar planets detected by microlensing, and list of extrasolar planets directly imaged when new planets were discovered. Don't forget to update tallies in these articles when you add! These articles were outdated by about two months. So you'll may want to update by adding new stars and planets that were discovered in June and July. BlueEarth (talk | contribs) 21:21, 9 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

"latter" vs. "later" edit

Hello Ilvon. The word "latter" generally refers to the end part of something; "later" is the chronological term for a subsequent event. Please don't use "latter" when you really mean "later" as it makes the sentence incongruous. Thank you. Regards, RJH (talk) 18:27, 22 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Your star edits edit

Hello Ilvon,

I noticed you made some recent changes to several star articles and I have a couple of concerns in that regard.

  • First of all, myself and others do find that blinking dot to be a distracting annoyance, which is the reason we have been using the circle instead. The latter masks less of the chart and doesn't detract from the image. If this is not acceptable, then I suppose we will likely need to discuss the matter further and gain a fuller consensus from the Astronomy WikiProject.
  • Second, it is usually frowned upon to link one statement to another of a different meaning; a practice called deceptive linking. I'd ask that you kindly not link a star's name to the Bayer designation article. Instead, what I've been doing is to modify the article lead to make it clear that the star's name is a Bayer designation. For example, I usually write something like this: Alpha Andromeda is the Bayer designation for a star in the constellation of....

Star names and superscripts edit

Hey there, thanks for creating all the new star articles! Less work for me later :). Anyways, when you create articles with a superscript (e.g. Omega1 Cygni [an article I created]), you should create the article without the superscript, and then use {{DISPLAYTITLE}} to make the title display in superscript. This way, people don't have to type in the superscript, which can be difficult for people who don't know what unicode is. StringTheory11 (tc) 00:21, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Proposal to merge articles about Chinese lunar mansion edit

Hi Ilvon. I'm proposing a merge of the article Twenty-eight mansions into the article Chinese constellations, the reasons you can find in Talk:Chinese constellations. There is no conflict between both article, and since I know you are the expert of the Chinese constellations, could you help moving the pictures from the article Twenty-eight mansions into Chinese constellations and then create a redirect from the article Twenty-eight mansions into Chinese constellations? I am a bit busy at this moment, I'm afraid I'll forgot this. Thanks a lot for introducing the knowledge of Chinese constellation into Wikipedia.

List of minor planets: 214001 and beyond edit

Hi,

Is this on your watch list? There's been some IP vandalism recently, and I can't verify many of the reasonable-looking IP-added bodies. — kwami (talk) 19:18, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

There are bodies with articles linked from that page which do not occur on the more specific pages you created, such as List of minor planets: 229001–230000. You might want to verify I'm not messing anything up, and that those bodies are included in whichever database you're using, so they aren't removed in future updates. — kwami (talk) 19:39, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

If all the bodies listed in them are now in the linked articles, could you delete (or blank and nominate for deletion) List of minor planets: 215001–000000 and List of minor planets: 216001–000000? — kwami (talk) 20:26, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

(385250) 2001 DH47 edit

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of (385250) 2001 DH47, and it appears to include material copied directly from http://wikitotal.info/wiki/2001_DH47.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material. You may use such publications as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details. CorenSearchBot (talk) 14:18, 23 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

The problem was that page is a WP mirror. The bot thought (385250) 2001 DH47 a copy of it because it had been copied – it was a copy and paste move, i.e. an incorrectly done move which can cause problems like this. So I've undone the copy and paste move and left (385250) 2001 DH47 as a redirect to 2001 DH47. If the page still needs moving then make a technical move request, but it's unclear that the new name is an improvement to me: no explanation was given for the new title in the copy and paste move and I can't see where it is from.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 15:22, 23 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for creating 9026 Denevi, Ilvon!

Wikipedia editor Kamranm1000 just reviewed your page, and wrote this note for you:

Great start, but please add an infobox, as infoboxes are used on almost every page on Wikipedia. Infoboxes also provide lots of useful information. There is an infobox template for asteroids/planets I believe, so see if you can find it, as it will help you get started on adding an infobox. Thanks!

Pages moves edit

Do not make copy paste moves within Wikipedia. This breaks the licence, and such pages are deleted as copyright infringement. The "more" menu has "move" option. Use that. WilyD 10:26, 27 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Asteroid stubs edit

Hello, could you please stop creating stubs on non-notable asteroids. They clearly fail the notability guidelines WP:NASTRO and all it does is make more work for those of us who now have to go and redirect all to the relevant lists. StringTheory11 (t • c) 20:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

I also see you haven't heeded WilyD's notice above about copyright. Copy-paste another article and I will be forced to block you for copyright violation. StringTheory11 (t • c) 20:17, 1 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
And I see you've now done another copy-paste move. Accordingly, I have blocked you indefinitely, since you have been warned multiple times not to do this. In this case, indefinite does not mean infinite, but rather simply until you acknowledge what you have done wrong, and promise not to repeat it. Ilvon (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

I'm very sorry to do this because I just want to make the previous unnamed asteroid page become the named asteroid page. How I may to do to unblock my user account? Once more, very sorry to do this and I promise to make a good contribution, especially in astronomy page. Right now, List of Jupiter Trojans (Greek camp) are waiting for my edit. *bow bow and bow*

Decline reason:

I am declining your unblock request because it does not address the reason for your block, or because it is inadequate for other reasons. To be unblocked, you must convince the reviewing administrator(s) that

  • the block is not necessary to prevent damage or disruption to Wikipedia, or
  • the block is no longer necessary because you
  1. understand what you have been blocked for,

I'm very sorry. I understand that I have been blocked for. It is caused of I had performed copy-paste moves after being warned not to multiple times. List of minor planets - Info update name from provisional designation edit

Hi Ilvon, this is the first time I contact you but I feel like I kind of know you since I've seen so many of your edits in the field of asteroid discoveries on wikipedia. Thank you for all that work. Listen, I came across edit of yours and I think it's a good idea to explain to you what should be done whenever a minor planet has recently been named. About a month ago, I removed all WP:Self-redirect from the List of minor planets#Main index up to #200,000 (these are all lists that use subpages for their content). Please do the following when you update the list:

  • create a #REDIRECT if it is a non-notable asteroid
  • add a link if the asteroid is notable
  • if there is already an article with its provisional name (redirected or not), please MOVE it (example).

Hope this makes sense to you. Please ask if did not explain myself sufficiently, or if you have an issue with that practice. By default, any named minor planet that has neither an article nor a #REDIRECT will be displayed as a REDLINK. This is the case for 7517 Alisondoane, (revision history) which you recently named, and for which no article with its provisional designation exists. If its not a notable object, a redirect should be created to the list. What you think? Cheers, Rfassbind – talk 10:20, 12 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

List of unnumbered minor planets edit

Hello Ilvon. You add numbers of asteroids to the List of unnumbered minor planets. Well, the point of this list is to list unnumbered asteroids. So when they get a number they should rather be deleted from this list. Regards, --Gereon K. (talk) 14:45, 5 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia and copyright edit

Hello Ilvon, and welcome to Wikipedia. All or some of your addition(s) to Meanings of minor planet names: 17001–18000 has had to be removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 02:01, 8 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Traditional name for Delta Aquilae edit

I have observed you added some traditional names for Delta Aquilae. I am tracking Denebokab, but I cannot find a reliable source for it (apart from websites posterior to your edit, most of them copying the information from the article itself). Is it possible that it is just a mistake? In fact, both Epsilon Aquilae and Zeta Aquilae receive the name Deneb al Okab, according to Jim Kaler [8][9]. Eric Walter Elst - total of minor planets discovered edit

Your edit is not correct. As per M.P.C. 12 March 2017, the discovery count for Eric Walter Elst is 3868, not 3867.

Minor Planet Discoverers (updated 13 March)
  • 3760 — 1986-2002 E. W. Elst
  • 54.. — 1993-2001 H. Debehogne, E. W. Elst
  • 16.. — 1992-1994 E. W. Elst, C. Pollas
  • 9... — 2002-2006 E. W. Elst, H. Debehogne
  • 7... — 1986 E. W. Elst, V. G. Ivanova
  • 7... — 1987-1996 E. W. Elst, G. Pizarro
  • 3... — 1999 E. W. Elst, S. I. Ipatov
  • 3... — 2008-2009 T. Pauwels, E. W. Elst
  • 2... — 1998-2005 E. W. Elst, T. Pauwels
  • 2... — 1999 E. W. Elst, S. Ipatov
  • 2... — 2004 P. De Cat, E. W. Elst
  • 1... — 1987 E. W. Elst, V. G. Shkodrov
  • 1... — 1994 H.; Elst Debehogne
  • 1... — 2000 E. W. Elst, D. Taeymans

I presume you missed the highlighted line above. This is (322169) 2010 XT, a typo by the MPC (it should read H. Debehogne and E. W. Elst or similar of course). If you search for "E. W. Elst" you will miss this red line and hence the total of discoveries (first column) will be 3876 instead of 3868.

Unfortunately you never add a comment to your edits, and I don't expect you to reply to this post either. That's OK with me. But the problem (discrepancy) with the total and listing of discovered minor planets will continue. From now on I'll just revert your improper edits without any further clarification. Besides your difficulties with the summation and typing numbers, you're doing a fine job. So please don't get angry and keep up your good with most of your edits on minor planets. Recent star name additions (grammar) edit

The sentence "This stars get the name insert name here by approval of IAU in 30 June 2017" is grammatically incorrect. It is also missing a full stop in the ones I looked at. The simplest change would be "This star gets the ..." (or "got the name", grammatically more accurate but doesn't read well) but I still think it could be improved. I edited Upsilon2 Cassiopeiae with a slightly different sentence that I think flows better, and also formatted the citation. What do you think?

Thank you for editing :) Ilvon (talk) 10:00, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Resource data from the counting result of Stellarium edit

Dear Wikipedians,

I need your suggestion about this:

I have arranged the table of next pole stars until 60.000 AD based on the counting result of Stellarium. Could the result is become the source of data that I will input about the next pole star? Thank's for your suggestion

Star position charts edit

If you want to add finder charts for stars, you should probably add ones that work. The "div" method is unreliable and breaks on displays with different screen sizes, different, fonts, etc., basically anything that changes the width of the starbox from what it was when you edited the article. For example, the red circle in Omega Virginis isn't even within the constellation on my display. A more reliable method is to use the Template:Location mark template which is designed to overlay one image on another reliably within a pixel or two. There are many examples, but see Xi1 Canis Majoris for one that I did recently. There are still hundreds of the div type out there, many of them wildly inaccurate. Preview – Consolidate – Summarize edit

Hello- Below are a few editing suggestions to make it easier for you and others to collaborate on the encyclopedia. Please preview, consolidate, and summarize your edits:

  • Try to consolidate your edits, at least at the section level, to avoid cluttering the page's edit history; this makes it easier for your fellow editors to understand your intentions, and makes it easier for those monitoring activity on the article.
    • The show preview button (beside the "publish changes" button) is helpful for this; use it to view your changes incrementally before finally saving the page once you're satisfied with your edits.
  • Please remember to explain each edit with an edit summary (box above the "publish changes" button).

Thanks in advance for considering these suggestions. Eric talk 10:44, 10 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
