Architecture of Germany

Can I suggest that it would be good to double the number of pictures in the article by using the template that has been used here: St James' Church, Sydney. It can either look good or look a mess depending on how carefully you select and juxtapose the pictures. See also Wells Cathedral. Things to take into account are colour, angle, proportion, blueness of sky etc.

Hi Amanda! Actually I'm quite fond of the idea to vitalize the article. Double images are nice, but can also look pretty overdone as you said. I remember an edit war at the main Germany article about it, that resulted in single images. Actually the article lost a lot of its visual appeal that way. I'll discuss it with the main editors. In general the article should be extended imho. Your advice is welcome, I sense you're an architecture enthusiast. Karneval

More important? By what measure? If this were a German language wiki, I'd agree with you, but this is an English language wiki. Most incoming links were and can be expected to be about the manga/anime series. If I do a Google, the Germanic carnivals are only the ninth and tenth links on the list, with the first eight being about the manga/anime. Carolina wren (talk) 04:27, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

While it's fully legit to take Google into consideration, it's not the only measure. If there's a place where the culture of centuries should have a meaning, it's Wiki. Besides in literature you'll find the carnival for "Karneval" which is more relevant than blogs and fanpages on Google ranked by hits. "Karneval" is the global synonym for Central European carnival traditions and thus should lead where it's meant to. If you type in "Karneval" in Wiki's search box you'll easily notice the "Karneval (manga)" entry or you'll see the redirects at the carnival page. This is a hallmark in skyscrapers history. Tubular designs are basics today.

Quercus robur

Hi, I wanted to explain why I reverted your edit on this page that capitalized the various common names and added "Common Oak" as another name. Capitalization of common names is discussed at WP:FLORA, which says" WP:Manual of Style says that "Common (vernacular) names are given in lower case, except where proper names appear (zebras, mountain maple, gray wolf, but Przewalski's horse)." and then lists birds as an exception. About listing "common oak" as an extra name: I agree that it is used, but personally, and I think some other editors would agree, that would not really be consistent with a world-wide view of the topic. There are many plants that are called "common this-or-that" in one part of the world, but are rare elsewhere, or have even become rare where they were once common, hence it seems preferable to list only the names that have some power to distinguish this species from others, such as "pedunculate oak". Architecture

Good additions, but explain the concepts that the two types of architecture refer to. Do it in no more than one sentence each, and state the name of a pioneer, in the field of the first concept. Don't add specifics like prizes being worth more money than other prizes. This is a very tightly constructed article. You have used the term "leaning against". Do you mean reacting against?

If one of your pioneers made a crucial and short definition of their concept (one short clever sentence that had influence) then add that. It has to be as significant as "Form follows Function". Keep in mind that this is about the discipline of architecture.

Hi Amanda, again I appreciate your efforts and understand your request, while the initial text is pretty compact already. The rather American approach to break a movement or period down to a single or just a handful of people is rather harmful and iniquitous to an encyclopedia in my eyes. And it's not justified there. The Driehaus prize is the crucial and main driver of the ideas behind the movement as opposed to the Pritzker ideals, but I'll remove the "price tag" indeed. But to bring more contextual understanding to this short section, I'll add the Principles of Intelligent Urbanism that are closely related to the architectural approach. I don't think restorations should be considered at "New Classical Architecture", as it's actually historical buildings. Single word "Holocaust" is not enough

The Lead for the article on Germany refers to the events of the Holocaust with a single word: "Holocaust". Including the number of deaths is not a minor detail, it is essential for the reader to understand the scale of the Holocaust. According the MOS:LEAD, the lead is supposed to be a standalone introduction to the topic. As it stands, the lead for Germany does not make any mention of anti-Jewish policies and actions of the Third Reich, except with the single word "Holocaust." List of universities in Germany

Hey Horst! I'm writing regarding the "List of universities in Germany" article where you deleted my edit yesterday. Your explanation was "this is about the HRR". If HRR means Heiliges Römisches Reich, then I cannot agree more, since HRR does not equal Germany. Apart from the multinational character of the university which I mentioned in my explanation (Bohemian, Polish, Saxon, and Bavarian sections - since the foundation), you can also look at the seal of the university, where is Charles IV. (founder of the university) kneeling in front of St. Wenceslas - patron saint of Czech lands. Charles IV. had his seat in Prague, Prague was a capital of HRR at this time, and the university was and is called Universitas Carolina Pragensis. The language of instruction was latin, not German. To sum up, it is a Prague university. If anyone feels the necessity to assess the national characteristic (which I do not), it is a Czech university. But certainly not a German university. Germany is a wonderful country with a long history, but it's somewhere else and Prague has never been in Germany. Therefore, I would appreciate returning my edit. Thanks und Liebe Grüße! Hi Lukas, I agree with you in the way you put it. However, Prague was elementary in the HRR and Bohemia was an integral part. We can't speak of nations anyway, but sources about German academic history generally note the importance of the Charles University. Thanks for your response, Horst. As you can see at the English Wikipedia page about HRR, HRR was a "multi-ethnic complex of territories": one of them was Kingdom of Bohemia, one of them was Kingdom of Germany and then there were many others. Germany was the same "integral part" of HRR as Bohemia. Bohemia has never been a part of Germany (just part of it during WWII). Moreover, the seat of the HRR emperor was - at that time - in Prague, in the Kingdom of Bohemia. Therefore, Prague was not a part of Germany. Hence, Charles University has never been on a German territory. As you said, Charles University was important for HRR - but that does not mean (not in the slightest) that it was a German university. I cannot see a single argument why Charles University should be labeled as a German university. Hi, I won't mind too much. But as more and more of these people come along to add a bit and futile additions, the whole article's gonna look overdone and cluttered. Not a pleasure to the reader. I always have in mind what the reader is looking for, and that's a rather compact overview of the topic and something to start from, the literature and links. Hi, I saw that you had some edits on the Germany page about a year ago and I really appreciate your serious contributions. I think the conversation on the talk page these past few days got pretty out of hand but I can see from your edits that much of what you had contributed to the article was (sadly) reversed. For example, I think you did the right thing by dividing the section on Nazi Germany and WWII from the Weimar Republic but I guess somehow it got switched back. Anyway, I hope you continue to contribute in the meaningful way that you have to the page. I'll also try to make similarly useful contributions. I can see a few places where it needs some work. Hi! Thank you for the response bamse. But I don't see either issue. We've got various lists on Wiki that are composed of author's research, but grounded in single sources. I'd just stroll through the various lists and add old town ensembles that are largely or completely protected as a whole. There's hardly anything that'd oppose such a list/category. Hi Horst. Because before there was only one article with the subject "Zwinger"; now there are at least three. I don't understand what you have in mind - why Berlin's residents are tourists in own city? I understand that Polish is very difficult language, but this sentence sounds like created by automatic translator (incorrect grammatical gender and case). The original goes like: Due to its location near Alexanderplatz, the tower is occasionally called Alex Tower. While we don't always agree on image or structure questions on Germany :), i do appreciate your contributions and work for the article. Image usage and placement have a lot to do with editorial decisions and aren't always completely objective. Mecklenburg-Schwerin, 1850-1855

Horst, This is my first look behind the Wikipedia curtain. Wow. It has a wonderful and apparently complete set of processes and procedures. I hope I do my part correctly.

I am the family genealogist and am looking for the reason that my G-G-Grandfather emigrated from Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1854. I have read some about the Revolutions of 1848 and the subsequent failure of the "forty-eighters" to bring about change. I suspect that the loss of progressive goals was at least part of my ancestors desire to emigrate and come to America for an improved life.

I saw that you contributed to the page "Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin" and on it was stated, "...all the concessions which had been made to democracy were withdrawn and further restrictive measures were introduced in 1851 and 1852." Can you recommend any books or articles that describe the life of a middle class family in Mecklenburg-Schwerin in the early 1850's? Unfortunately I am mono-linguistic and would prefer a book written in English, but if I need to have a German language book translated, I would do so for the right book.

MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index out

Hi, I saw your comment on the Talk:Tourism. I have discussed my concern over this MasterCard Index prior on the talk page. I don't think the index is suitable not only because of the advertisement of MasterCard aspect, but also because there seems to be quite a lot of these cities rankings by different sources (all are different and contradictory), thus I don't see a good reason of single (one of) them out on the article. And based on this earlier discussion, the MasterCard Index's methodology is questionable (i.e. aerial). I have tried to remove the Index previously, but was reverted by User:YJAX.--DerechoReguerraz (talk) 00:44, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Some silly person cut and pasted much of the content of the article directly into the lIntroduction. I have just deleted this edit because it was unnecessary and inappropriate. It may have been intentional (clever) vandalism.

If you added info to the introduction, rather than the body of the article, then your additions will have been lost. Could you check on this, please, and add new info to the text if necessary.

Hi Kozen. Your edit conflicts the Wikipedia:No original research guidelines. You did not include any references. In addition, we have to be careful to only include content of encyclopedic relevance, that means that factoids like "example prices" aren't really of relevance here. It can and must be your wording, put in an encyclopedic way. BUT you need to include SOURCES for the facts that you claim! Add citations! Use the < ref > templates to include them. Re:Sports car main image

In restoring the Sports car lead photo where half the image is a gaudy seashore sunset background, you give the edit summary: "for a current statement, a current model should be shown." The "current statement" does not apply only to the current model; it applies to all the MX-5s sold from 1989 to the present, a summation of the oldest ones, the newest ones, and all others in between.

Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles/Conventions#Minimum image standards provides for this: "The image selected for an article's top (lead) infobox does not need to show any particular version or generation of the vehicle, such as the latest, the last, the first, the best-selling, or any other." The same item goes on to state: "Regardless of the ages of the vehicle shown, pick a clear, high-quality image according to the image quality guidelines; one that clearly shows a vehicle relevant to the article without photoflash glare or other photographic faults, against a simple and contrasting background. Such an image is always to be preferred over a lower-quality image, such as one that shows photoflash glare or a distracting background."

I have replaced the image with another image of the latest version of the car with a less distracting background; however, I believe the image of the older car that was there before to be better composed that the one I have put there now, and would have put that one back were it not for your objection.

Hi. There's a criticism section within the article and the study can be mentioned there (and already is). There's various controversial studies and opinions on the matter and the lede/intro of the article should only mention this very fact, not a specific study. OK-I understand your point, but since this is being portrayed as a "real" space-mission, the fact that scientists outside of what their company says are saying that it it would be a suicide mission, really cannot be saved to the very end of the article where the controversy section is. That is something that needs to be considered at the very start-(the LEDE), they are planning this trip, but as it stands right now, anyone involved in taking the trip would most likely die. I am willing to compromise with different wording in the lede, and hope that it can be discussed on the TP-thanks2601:C:67C0:F8:800C:5FD6:3C44:DE7C (talk) 18:41, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

The very same could have been said about the Apollo missions at this early stage. Some technological solutions yet have to be found and we simply can't make up some arguments at this point of time. Hi, the general policy on foreign names is explained at WP:PLACE ("Relevant foreign language names (one used by at least 10% of sources in the English language or is used by a group of people which used to inhabit this geographical place) are permitted"). Regarding placenames in Poland the principles are determined in the "Gdansk vote":

I'm well aware of the policies you quoted. But this doesn't apply to Dresden or Leipzig. Both also weren't significantly inhabited by Poles at any given point in their history as cities. Please refrain from reinstating this, there's no consensus on doing so. It's perfectly sufficient to have that in the history or name sections respectively. This is not a random rule and this is not an excuse for excluding the Polish names. Reread the vote notice carefully, "The following rules apply in the case of disputes:" - there is no exemption from this rule. Katowice image

Well you're right, still I think it makes sense to illustrate the very fact and in addition extend the demographics and urbanization sections. While I agree there's an abundance of pictures, which leads me to the conclusion we should have a look and that and trim a little, which benefits download times and overview quality. I'd appreciate if you'd give me your sources for this allegation of yours, and also explain what an "HRR citizen" is suppposed to be (there was no legal citizenship of any kind at that time). Nobody in Darlowo speaks German. I've been there. The area was under German control for a period, that's all. The people are Polish and have always been. Berlin photos

Hi, thanks for your edits on Berlin today. Unfortunately, the photo now is not a photo of the East Side Gallery, but the back of the wall in the park, with contemporary graffiti. The East Side Gallery is on the other side of the wall. Because of this, I would propose to return to a previous stable version for the moment, but I don't want to revert you if you don't agree. The last stable one (July 2017 - January 2018) was objected to because it mentions the Holocaust Memorial in the filename. So I'd propose going to the one before that (April-July 2017) or the earlier one (February 2015 - April 2017).
