Griffith Park Zoo

Hello, and thanks for your work to improve the article Griffith Park Zoo! I have a question about the picture you added captioned "Asian elephant at the Los Angeles Zoo, 1920". I'm assuming that was really at the Griffith Park Zoo - which was the Los Angeles Zoo at the time, but which is different from the current Los Angeles Zoo. Do you think it would be appropriate to change the caption to say "Griffith Park Zoo"? I didn't want to do it without your input. --MelanieN (talk) 13:30, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

Please do caption the image however you see fit, I simply used the file name, intending to come back to the page after a little research. It isn't clear to me whether the old zoo was ever actually called anything other than the Los Angeles Zoo in its time, not that that's particularly important. Also, I added the picture based on the assumption that the archival information describing it as the "Los Angeles Zoo" could only mean the one in Griffith Park, but if you suspect otherwise, don't hesitate to correct the situation. I'm currently trying to dig up info on any other animal parks in the area contemporary with the photo... (There are a few other pics from that set in the commons category now, by the way.) So... after some investigating, I'm now fairly sure that the elephant image, and possibly the related ones in the collection, are actually pictures taken at the Selig zoo... I should know better than to take info like that at face value. The best evidence is from images of the studio zoo that display similar facades, and one showing the exact same structure (link is blacklisted, sorry). Oops. I'll go tell the USC people now... Wow, good research! Thanks for looking into this. I knew it couldn't be the current "Los Angeles Zoo" but I didn't even think about other predecessors. As for the name, I lived in Los Angeles before the opening of the current LA Zoo, and at that time the Griffith Park Zoo was called the Griffith Park Zoo. But I obviously have no idea what it was called in the 1920s! I see that you uploaded the same image to the LA Zoo article; do you think that needs recaptioning or explanation? --MelanieN (talk) 15:18, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the reminder about the L.A. Zoo page, I was a little over-enthusiastic when I discovered the picture, I think. My impression is that the Selig zoo was the far more impressive (and photogenic) of the two while it existed, so I probably shouldn't expect to find any Griffith Park images from that era... oh well. I've adjusted the external link to the the USC archive to find ~250 later, non-PD images of the zoo, after working around an odd bug in their search syntax, so there's that... Everything is in one or more neighborhoods

I bet that's how it works. The citation I put in was a little dodgy, because it's a postal address. I bet you can find people to argue about whether every location covered by the Encino post office is truly in Encino or just Encino-adjacent or actually in some other neighborhood all together. This is complicated by the fact that as long as the ZIP is right it doesn't actually matter what place-name one uses, so it's possible to just make those up and still get mail. But really, I don't think it's possible to have a place in LA that's not in one or more neighborhoods.— alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 00:09, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Well, I probably care less about the neighborhood game than anyone, maybe to an eccentric degree. My perspective is that the Sepulveda Basin is a rather large geophysical feature of the Valley, surrounded by neighborhoods. I don't personally have an opinion as far as leaving the redirects or not, but if you do decide to convert them all (it could be an easily automated batch operation, I would think) there should probably be an explanatory edit summary to avoid confusion. More images from the USC achieve

Hi jnkyrdsprkl, thank you for adding the image of Arcade Depot to the page. I also created a few other pages related to stations/railroads in L.A. (River Station (Los Angeles) and Los Angeles & San Pedro Railroad)and I wanted to see if you had any tips on how I could find images for them. I know from this webpage [1] that they do have images housed at the same USC collection as the image you posted but I can't figure out a way to search the collection and locate the images. @Monopoly31121993: I was actually looking for the River Station pics when I got sidetracked (happens every time I start digging through image archives), but I'll put those articles at the top of my list for later today. The USC web collection interface has some quirks related to searching... short version: if you select a specific collection in the checkbox on the left, you'll often get more results than if you have them all selected (don't ask). Most of the relevant stuff is in the California Historical Society collection. If you find anything there you want moved to commons, you can post a link here and I'll do the dirty work, as long as it's pre-1923 or otherwise likely to be PD. A large part of that collection is already on commons, but the batch operator was being cautious about Public Domain status and missed a few... --jnkyrdsprkl (talk) 19:04, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

We are going to put the sign placard as the main image, then give in to the other images. This is the unified standards we are organizing the pages as. The 'we' you would like to know are several people who takes the pictures (Jonathan M., Simon H., Han Sang Yoon), decides what goes into the Wiki (Han Sang Yoon), and others who also helps us (Maximillion W., Bobby C.) We work to create a portfolio of organized Wikipedia pages of the Los Angeles Metro stations, starting with the Red and Purple Lines. We take pride in LA, and we are to improve pages that people are to search and learn about. I'm afraid we're strangers, and we can't let you in, but these days, you'll see during Sundays of three men doing hard work of photography all over the Metro systems. Please. @HanSangYoon: Please don't do anything else until you read this: Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle. If you take an action, and someone disagrees, you need to discuss the issue with other interested parties. You seem to have some very strange ideas about how things work here. I'm happy that you take pride in L.A., and I like some of the pictures you've contributed (but you should probably be uploading them to Wikimedia Commons), however: you don't own the articles. The placard images don't add value, they're redundant with the infobox header. The transit articles should be mobile-friendly, without a cluster of images at the top of the article. I asked for discussion, got no response, went about restoring the pages just to have you revert the edits. This kind of thing will eventually upset people. I understand the Bold, Revert, and the Discussing methods of Wikipedia editing. But we still believe we are contributing the pages as a benefit, since it organizes the structures of the page as the sign placards as the headings, then comes the other good old / new pictures. It is an improvement since it corresponds with the organization of other subway station pages in Wikipedia, such as Seoul Subway station pages in Korean Wikipedia, or Tokyo Subway station pages in Japanese. We are simply trying to follow their admirable system of putting the sign placards as the main page. But we, Angelinos would like to insert additional pictures that would insert colors to the pages. We moved the platform pages from the heading section to the bottom cause it did not represent the station with its official name. Take a look at Seoul Metro station pages or Tokyo Metro station pages in their respective languages, and see what came at the heading image section: the sign placards come out, not station images (some have both). We deleted some pictures cause they were too little to benefit the page by being unnecessary or too indirect, or is too blurry and a bad quality image. This is why we believe we correspond to benefitting the page and at the same time, following the rules of uploading information to make great Wikipedia pages. I also understand your point of too much pictures which makes clusters of photos on the top. We are still editing these pages, and we will balance out the pages. We also may not own the pages, but we have the right to edit the pages if they are improvement (explained earlier why they were), and reverting our pages seems to us as reverting the improvements. --HanSangYoon (talk) 07:21, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

A photo has been on my list for a while, but the street-level view just isn't that inspiring, now that it's being used mostly as something to hang advertising on. Thanks — LA River & CHS images

Hi Junkyardsparkle, thank you for suggesting the merge of Los Angeles River bicycle path & Los Angeles River Bikeway. That caught my eye, that otherwise would have passed on, to look into them more. With the path(s) passing through so many cities, agencies, & special districts a single standard seems to be missing.

Thank you also for asking me for suggestions a long time ago before uploading a delicious big batch of Cal. Hist. Society images on Commons. I'm very sorry to not have seen your question on my talk page there until recently, and so neither replying nor giving appreciation then.
