Curios as to why my revision was removed

Hello, and Good Evening

I stopped by this evening to make a formatting change on the revision that I did last night. I find that the entire revision was removed, and I am curious as to why. I am well known in the professional world in the area that the page deals with, and am regularly asked to consult for large scale tours & events. Everything that I posted was clean, concise, and well informative on the subject.

The revision I was asking about was on the "Tour Manager" page, made last night by "World2er"

Thanks in advance for your reply.— Preceding unsigned comment added by World2er (talkcontribs) 01:25, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Here's what you added to the Tour Manager article. I see several red flags:
  • It's an entirely new section, although all or most of it overlapped with what was already in the article.
  • The only reference you provided was to world2er.com — and your username is World2er.
  • The link you added isn't a reference for the content you added. Instead, it's a link to a site that advertises you and your services.
  • Your edit wasn't in Wiki format; it used numbers in parenthesis to identify notes, and those notes are themselves in the body of the article. Additionally, the numbers in the article don't match the numbers on the notes.
  • Based on your username and the tone of the addition, I was pretty sure you were a pro. However, to WP, that means you should be very careful about edits within your field of expertise.
  • One of your edits was auto-tagged as "possible conflict of interest."
Overall, I cannot recommend too strongly that you read Wikipedia's policy pages on Conflict of interest and Company names as usernames. DoriTalkContribs 01:54, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your speedy reply.
In looking at the points in your reply:
"It's an entirely new section, although all or most of it overlapped with what was already in the article."
After reading the guidelines for posting, I thought it necessary to add the section specifically noted for large scale events, as what is currently listed is easily recognized as applying to tours working smaller venues (clubs, small theaters, etc). The jump to arena level touring, by nature, involves the additional items that I added. It cannot be combined with what is currently listed, or it will cause immediate confusion to anyone who is reading it, potentially using it as a reference for a tour they might be getting involved in. For example: Under "Budget", the current reference is very good for smaller tours, but on large scale tours, a tour manager will never do the budget (these level tours are multi-million dollar ventures, often with outside investors). Therefore, one of the big entertainment business management companies (gelfand, rennert & feldman, etc) will put the budget together. A tour manager may have some input, but only in as far as answering specific questions asked by the company (in reality, the tour manager is often bought in to operate a tour blueprint & budget, both developed by one of these companies).
"The only reference you provided was to world2er.com — and your username is World2er."
That's what everyone knows me as.
"The link you added isn't a reference for the content you added. Instead, it's a link to a site that advertises you and your services."
The content that I added is taken directly from www.world2er.com/tour manager 101 ... It is a 900+ word article that I wrote, at the request of an associate who conducts classes at a music school in Boston.
"...Additionally, the numbers in the article don't match the numbers on the notes"
I did see that I missed changing the 5 to 3 ... The other two references were correct
"One of your edits was auto-tagged as "possible conflict of interest."
Not sure about that one. When I reviewed the history of edits on the page, I noticed another tag of the same nature, but I didn't see any sort of changes afterward, so I thought that it was something that was automatic when adding a new edit or section.
I had originally thought about doing sections for other types of tour managers (corporate & theatrical, to name two). Although the title is the same, the job descriptions are very different for each.
Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by World2er (talkcontribs) 03:00, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
I know I'm repeating myself, but your response didn't mention if you'd seen the important part of what I wrote above:

Overall, I cannot recommend too strongly that you read Wikipedia's policy pages on Conflict of interest and Company names as usernames

Please read these, as based on some of what you've said it's clear that you're missing some important information. DoriTalkContribs 03:08, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
Good Morning, and once again, Thank you for your prompt reply ...
Yes, I did read both sections that you mentioned (regarding "Conflict of interest" and "Company names as usernames). After reading them yet again, I am still puzzled. Does this mean I should change my username? If that is the case, then why are the current page entries not being altered for the same reason? The entries are by "Tour Concepts", using references from www.tourconcepts.com ... Also, when you follow the referenced links, they redirect to a page on another website asking you to either signup to view information, or purchase a book to view it. I am in no way protesting the information that is already on the WP page, but I do not understand (based on the previously referenced WP policies) why my post was removed, and what is currently there hasn't.
Please understand that I am, in no way, trying to sound difficult. I am just trying to understand, so I can avoid such issues in the future. World2er (talk) 16:32, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
Good point about the other reference; I've now cleaned that up as well. As for what you should/shouldn't do in the future, I recommend that you ask your questions at the Conflict of interest/Noticeboard, where you'll find volunteers who are more up to speed on the issues than I am. DoriTalkContribs 00:45, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
Will do ... Thanks, and enjoy the rest of your weekend World2er (talk) 03:05, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Dori,

Thanks for your message. My company owns AgileWrap (www.agilewrap.com) and I would like to create a wikipedia page for AgileWrap. I will follow wikipedia guidelines. We are currently writing the article. Could you please guide us and help us post the article.

Here are few products on wikipedia that belong to our subject area. We plan to use the similar format for creating our article -

Please let me know if you have any questions or concern.

Jano Toussounian Page.

Hey Dori,

Thank you so much for your concern. The reason why I want that Wikipedia page to be up there isn't because it's a personal website or anything like that, it's because I'm applying for a US O-1 Working VISA for Actors. I need to have a Wikipedia page. I didn't create it. My friend logged on and made it for me. Everything stated there is true and I have been told that someone in the past has tried to make one but didn't know how.

Please let me know what I have to do to keep it on there. It will be well appreciated!

Warm regards, Jano Toussounian. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Janotoussounian (talkcontribs) 09:57, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, Jano, but it doesn't work that way. First you have to pass WP:NACTOR or WP:GNG, then you get an article—not the other way around. DoriTalkContribs 02:44, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

Risk Management Tools-Predictive!

Dori, despite the outlandish suggestion, risk tools are predictive-consider the simple case of predicting next months costs from risk-and simplistically: Imagine you have 10 risks, each with a 10% chance of occurring, and costing your project $100,000. Then you know that your project is going to need 0, 100,000, or 200,000, depending on your risk acceptance, for next month. Other than that you can Google "predictive" and "risk". Please undo your removal about predictive on "Risk Management Tools"... it really is.GESICC (talk) 05:17, 19 December 2011 (UTC)GESICC

If you have a verifiable and reliable source for that, feel free to add it to Risk management tools yourself. But otherwise, it doesn't help to make the article better. DoriTalkContribs 23:01, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

hi dori

Wikipedia's process is that anyone can edit articles. If you want to add information that's verifiable and reliably sourced to an article, great! If what you want to add is promotional material about an as-yet-unreleased film, then it's likely someone will revert that edit. DoriTalkContribs 01:23, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Re-adding a CSD tag after it has been declined by an admin

Please do not re-add a CSD tag after the request has been declined by an administrator. This could be seen as WP:FORUMSHOPping. If you disagree with the decision, please use WP:DRV or use the appropriate XFD process to request a discussion for deletion. Thanks. --Jayron32 03:10, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

I thought that requesting deletion of an article as a dupe (A10) and requesting deletion of a redirect as an unlikely typo (R3) were sufficiently different—that is, while the page name given was the same, the page content and deletion rationale for each request were entirely unrelated to the other. Sorry if I offended! DoriTalkContribs 03:21, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
You didn't offend. I don't offend easily, trust me. Let me explain why I converted the first CSD to a redirect; the term appears to exist as a reasonable redirect given the text of the article; if someone created the article not knowing the actual subject was already covered at Wikipedia, it seems like the term is at least a plausible one which someone may use. I don't know the subject matter all that well, but given that someone was looking for that gun by using that term, didn't find it, and started to create their own article about it indicates that someone finds the term useful. Thus, your second rationale was also inaccurate. If you think the redirect should still be deleted, after my explanation, please feel free to bring the matter before the community, at either WP:DRV or WP:RFD. I hope my reasonings here make sense. --Jayron32 03:46, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

2011 Los Angeles arson spree

Why did you add the update and recentism tags to 2011 Los Angeles arson spree? The {{current event}} tag takes care of the update problem, and can you tell me one instance of recentism? Also, Response means "discussion" (ie press confrence) not the investigation. I based the outline loosely around Vítkov arson attack of 2009. BCS (Talk) 23:34, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

I keep starting to answer this, and the mess keeps getting messier…
To answer your particular questions: I removed {{recentism}} at the same time you wrote this here. I agree that {{current}} made sense, but unfortunately, someone else removed it. So far as "response" v "investigation", that might work for a longer article about a Czech situation , but I don't think it works here quite as well. Lauren, there were two large problems with your edits:
1. Conflict of Interest
As the Executive Managing Editor for the paper, you have an obvious relationship with the subject of the article. Consequently, Wikipedia's position is that it's generally a bad idea for you to edit the article.

Your faculty advisor is probably best suited to discuss this with you, but WP's rules about violating copyright are fairly straightforward: Don't.

... for diving in at Daniel Grady Faires. It was a bit of a mess and I felt bad about jumping in 30 minutes or so after the thing had been created, and then I had to go out leaving it as a job half done. The intent was clearly promotional and I have little doubt that there is COI (the article has been CSD'd previously) ... but I still query the notability. Just cause I'm a "new editor" doesn't mean my opinions aren't valid for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etherpad. Most of the article references are SPS's and blogposts, not verifiable links.

I'm not saying (and I've not said) that your opinions are invalid; just that you—as a new editor—might want to take things a little more slowly.
For instance, you've mentioned SPSs several times now. But the rationales you gave for deleting information from Etherpad included the claims that TechCrunch (here) and Google Blogoscoped (here) are SPSs, when they're both considered to be reliable sources elsewhere on WP. Hi Dori,

I just made my first edit to a Wikipedia page (Ares Vallis), and I noticed that you reversed the edit soon after on the basis of a possible conflict of interest. My username probably made it plain that I'm the author of the linked website, and if that's enough to represent a conflict of interest that's perfectly understandable -- I'm very new at this and want to make sure to follow the rules.

Quick background on the site -- it was created in conjunction with Dr. Sanjeev Gupta and Dr. Nicholas Warner, two of the foremost researchers involved with Ares Vallis. It was built to make extremely high-resolution Ares Vallis images from the ESA Mars Express High-Resolution Stereo Camera available to the public. Its purpose is public outreach and it is not intended as a promotional medium for myself or the Drs. There is no commercial aspect to the site, and no advertising.

Does this still qualify as a conflict of interest?

Thanks, Kbarkan (talk) 06:14, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Here are Wikipedia's policies on External links and Conflict of interest. IMO, the best place to discuss this, though, would be at Talk:Ares Vallis, as you're more likely to get responses from people who know what the articles has/needs.

Thanks, Dori. I'll take a look at External links and Conflict of interest, then see what the general consensus is at Talk:Ares Vallis. If it's not appropriate for me to submit the link, that's absolutely fine. Have a good one.

AFC question

Hi, DoriSmith; I'm not familiar with Articles for creation, but became aware via BLP violations by an IP at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary of Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Dr. Faith Kim created by the same IP, which is a BLP vio, an attack page, and contained copyvio. Could you please tell me how to delete the page? Or could you handle it? The IP created several AFC BLP vio attack pages, and I've issued warnings. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:48, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

I'm not an admin, so I can't delete anything. I'd think that if you just add a {{db-g10}} template to those two pages (WT:Articles for creation/Dr. Faith Kim and WT:Articles for creation/Jack Hakim), some admin should be able to take care of it. DoriTalkContribs 04:12, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I put a db-attack on Faith Kim, but haven't had as much time to study Jack Hakim. I just wasn't sure what the normal process for AFC was-- whether they are eventually deleted anyway, but the Faith Kim shoulda/coulda been deleted per attack early on. Thanks, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:59, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Removal of soft redirect

Hi Dori,

I see that you replaced my soft redirect at BANSPAR with a hard redirect to BAHORWA.. I think that the soft redirect to previous page was more appropriate as the BANSPAR is more famous than BAHORWA.. I am new to Wiki, and don't know how to add disambiguation, so I am reverting the change for time being. You can let it remain or (if you deem it more appropriate) add a disambiguation message..

Regards

WT:Soft redirect#Redirects to foreign language Wikipedias says:

Although soft redirects to Wikipedias in other languages are possible, they seem quite undesirable due to the unlikelihood that English speakers will be able to benefit from them.

If the only options are a page on en.WP and a page on hi.WP, the guideline says to stay here. The best option, of course, is to translate the non-English page and turn it into an article here—but until then, let's stick with something that English speakers can use. got it.. thanks IKartikeya (talk) 10:49, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification

Hi. When you recently edited Nagartha, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Tamil and Telugu (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Cranach Archive

Dear DoriSmith,

I am surprised that you deleted the entry Cranach Digital Archive.

This is an open source, collaborative and institutional research resource. Can you please explain, why you deleted it or reactivate it.

Thank you!

Best,

Regarding Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger: this was already answered (by others) at User talk:CranachArchive (now blocked) and again (by me) at User talk:Hcanarc. See WP:External links for more. DoriTalkContribs 20:36, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Hi Dori, I had a look at this and wonder if you might revisit it: the archive looks seriously useful as it gives detailed info on the pics, and is from a very authoritative group of institutions who hold his works (National Gallery London, Metropolitan Museum NY, etc). I wondered about just replacing the two links, but in view of your strong comments in the articles thought I'd get back to you instead. PamD 23:58, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
My thought is that both pages are desperately in need of references. When I first saw them, they contained:
If this particular site is such a great resource, can it be used to reference some of the info in the articles? That would be great.
Otherwise, if it's just another external resource among many, then it should be listed in DMOZ. But there's no reason to include every resource on the web:

Wikipedia articles are not mere collections of external links or Internet directories. There is nothing wrong with adding one or more useful content-relevant links to an article; however, excessive lists can dwarf articles and detract from the purpose of Wikipedia.

Cranach Digital Archive 2

Dear DoriSmith,

I wonder why you deleted again the link to the Cranach Digital Archive which is an interdisziplinary, non-commercial, interinstitutional and international research ressource on the Cranachs which includes information presently on more than 400 works from 40 collections. Is it the aim of Wikipedia to avoid any linking but to be the "ONLY" resource?

Maybe you could read "About us" before responding.

I already answered this question here. DoriTalkContribs 09:10, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Cranach Digital Archive 3

Hi DoriSmith,

It seems that you want to keep the English Cranach site rather unattractive by deleting any entry. At least the information and link is included in the German page ...

Wish you all the best with your idea of improvements!

And once again, it appears that you aren't reading any of the advice that I and others have given you. That's a shame—you've been given several good answers. DoriTalkContribs 19:45, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
Actually, no. This is a major resource & should be left. You have now been reverted by 2 different established editors in the subject area. Please leave it now. Johnbod (talk) 20:20, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
One established editor (User:PamD), not two. And why is this link so important that it needs to be mentioned twice, explicitly breaking established policy? DoriTalkContribs 21:11, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
And me. Johnbod (talk) 21:37, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
Got diffs for that? User:PamD's done it twice. You haven't edited the page in 11 months. But whatever; this article, imo, isn't worth fretting about the strange claims and the policy breaking. I've reverted back to the version (with ELs) from before I touched it. DoriTalkContribs 23:01, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
I reverted you at Cranach the Younger. There's nothing wierd here, just wanting to present the best information in the best way. Bye. Johnbod (talk) 00:48, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
But anyhow, let's keep this discussion over on the talk page, where it belongs. DoriTalkContribs 21:11, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
