Women in Red edit

Hi there, CynMTU, and welcome to Women in Red. It's good to see you intend to write about women engineers and scientists. I see you have already created a couple of articles on male engineers but not yet on women. When you create your first women's biography, you might find it useful to look through our [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Essays/Primer for creating women's biographies|Primer for creating women's biographies}}. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties or need assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 10:08, 11 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks you I will check it out! CynMTU (talk) 14:20, 11 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I see you are involved in an editathon on 24 January. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance. Maybe you would like to add a Wikipedia meetup page. See Category:Wikipedia meetups in January 2022. We'll then be able to see any new articles which require attention.--Ipigott (talk) 12:20, 23 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

User pages edit

Hi CynMTU. A couple things:

  • If you are creating a user page, make sure to create it in user space. You have created some article pages that now need to be deleted.
  • I strongly encourage you not to create user pages for other users. If you want to invite them to a Wikiproject, or advise them about a user box, let them know in their user talk page. Some users (such as myself) don't like to use user boxes. It's considered bad etiquette to create user pages for other users.

Thanks. Singularity42 (talk) 16:52, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I have mass-reverted your changes to the user pages. All the users have prepared their own user pages, and may not appreciate you changing them. Again, you can invite them or let them know about user boxes on their talk pages, and they can choose whether to include it on their user page or not. Singularity42 (talk) 16:57, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Singularity42 All of these folks have signed up to be a part of the project, so it is appropriate to add the userbox, since they have requested it. You can see their signups here. Can you please unrevert the changes? Many thanks.CynMTU (talk) 17:11, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I see they signed up for the Wikiproject. Where did they give their okay for you to add a userbox and a talkpage-type comment on their userpage? One does not equal the other. Singularity42 (talk) 17:14, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Singularity42 Via email - we have a google group. Sorry to be a pain, but I'd appreciate it if you would add it back. Many thanksCynMTU (talk) 17:37, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

You're using the user page to leave talk messages for them - which is already not allowed - and adding user boxes to their user pages based on your say-so that you have permission to edit their user pages. No, I'm not self-reverting. Nor do I understand the concern. Just give them the link to the userbox on their talk page and let them choose to add it or not. That's the normal Wikipedia etiquette. (Also, please indent your replies. Thanks.) Singularity42 (talk) 17:41, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Singularity42 Oh dear! Can you show me where its documented that leaving talk messages on a talk page isn't allowed? I'm not aware of that. The users in my project are all new editors and they are trying new things each week. This week, they are going to look at our project user box that I've already added and then add another one that we are discussing, if they want. I suppose they can just add the both of them. CynMTU (talk) 18:12, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
(By the way, I fixed the indenting - take a look at WP:INDENT for more information.) I would check out Wikipedia:User pages for more information. At the beginning, it states the difference between a user page and a user talk page, and the purposes of each. Singularity42 (talk) 18:18, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks I think I found it. We probably did stray out of the definition of a user talk page for the purpose of education. CynMTU (talk) 18:23, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
It's all good. That's what talk pages are for - and there was nothing controversial. :) Singularity42 (talk) 18:33, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Martin Lagina edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Martin Lagina requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.mtu.edu/alumni/recognition/profiles/martin-lagina.html and mynorth.com/2016/06/rick-marty-lagina-last-treasure-hunters. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. The article List of Michigan Technological University Winter Carnival Themes has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The Winter Carnival itself might be a notable subject, but this list of its themes certainly is not.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Indentation on talk pages edit

Hey, thanks for your work around here: you're doing a great job. I do have one minor request: when you are posting on talk pages, please use the correct level of indentation to keep everything visually organized and easy to follow. Generally, this means using one more colon (:) at the start of your reply than the person to whom you are replying did. For more on that, you can read Help:Talk pages#Indentation. Thanks! thanks, I will give it a try

About your paid contributions edit

I've been looking over your contributions (because that's what we do with paid editors) and had a couple of questions:

  1. When you've made edits to specific persons' biographies, is that work that MTU asked you to do, or the individual in question?
  2. Did you make this edit in your paid capacity, or was that something you did on your own?

Compassionate727 (T·C) 15:13, 4 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

My work as a WiR for MTU to facilitate Wikipedia entries related to the institution's mission, including bios of notable people associated with the university. I also encourage and assist MTU to release material under open licenses, especially our archives holdings and to develop the relationship between the host institution and the Wikimedia community. I advise a team of students/faculty/alumni that edit MTU related articles during edit-a-thons and on their own.
I made that edit as part of the online training I took to practice making edits. It was one of the suggested articles for students to edit. CynMTU (talk) 13:32, 5 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia and copyright edit

Hello CynMTU! Your additions to Martin Lagina have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. Compassionate727 (T·C) 12:03, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Paid? edit

Hi! I've read your user-page, but it's not clear to me whether or not you were paid to create this. Could you kindly clarify? Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 09:11, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Justlettersandnumbers: CynMTU hasn't edited in five months, so I doubt you'll get a response from her. However, she said somewhere (I don't remember where right now) that she would create biographies at the request of MTU faculty or alumni. I have been operating under the assumption that she was paid for all the biographies she wrote. Compassionate727 (T·C) 14:42, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Compassionate727! Well, there's no proper disclosure that I can see – that's why I asked for clarification here. And if this or any other page is WP:UPE in violation of the WP:TOU, then I'm pretty sure it should not have been moved to mainspace. Ping Pppery, who moved it to the present title, in case he/she has anything to add. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 16:51, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
I came across the page when doing a database query to monitor for inappropriate deletions, which picked up your deletion to make way for a move (because the way it excludes legitimate deletions to make way for moves is excluding cases where the deleted title is blue again). I had no involvement in its creation and nothing else to add. * Pppery * it has begun... 18:22, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Justlettersandnumbers and @Compassionate727 I wrote this article as part of my work as a WiR for Michigan Tech, as I disclosed in the talk. WiR is part of my many paid job responsibilities for the university, While on occasion, I have written biographies as part of that role, I haven't done much editing in the past 5 months personally as I have stepped back from doing that now and have focused more on the key roles for WiR:
  • Serves as a liaison between the organization and the Wikimedia community to promote a mutually beneficial cooperation.
  • Promotes understanding of Wikimedia among staff at the organization through workshops and events.
  • Works with organizational staff to digitize, compile, and organize resources that can be shared with the Wikipedia community.
  • Facilitates the improvement of content by the Wikipedia community, rather than directly editing articles as a core goal.
  • Coordinates events, such as Hack-a-Thons, Edit-a-Thons, or Backstage Passes, that bring Wikipedians on-site to work with staff on content creation and improvement.
  • Formally coordinated by the institution, allowing the resident to work closely with staff for various projects.
  • Ultimately, a residency lays the foundation for a more lasting partnership between the Wikipedia community and an organization.
Hope this helps! CynMTU (talk) 18:54, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

  Women in Red 8th Anniversary
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! @DMacksI have a student editor @ThePurpleMage that will be working on this this semester, following your recommendation last year using creative tagging in wikicommons. Hoping you can help us figure out the best way. Then we can delete the list. CynMTU (talk) 14:58, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
We have commons:Category:Michigan Technological University Winter Carnival as the collection of the all the images related to the festival. That is independent of the enwiki article, and is not the subject of this article's deletion discussion. I'd be happy to help on commons if you (CynMTU or ThePurpleMage, or anyone else) think there is a better way to organize those images. For example, renaming them to a standard name-pattern so the category sorts properly by year. Or separating the set of logo images from the other images (sculptures, etc.) Maybe cutting apart commons:Winter Carnival Buttons from 1950s.jpg to put each of those three in a separate file (easy to do graphically even if you do not have easy access to the items themselves).
