Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Hunter Kahn (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). 1922 Vallenar earthquake

Hi Ceranthor, I 5x expanded the 1922 Vallenar earthquake yesterday, as part of an effort to have at least start class articles on every earthquake in the List of earthquakes#Largest earthquakes by magnitude. The 5x was incidental, I wasn't thinking about DYK and now that I look at the article I'm stumped for a hook. Your FAC

I'm sorry your article got caught in the crossfire, but a couple of things came to a head simultaneously and my patience had worn a bit thin. It's obviously not your fault that the alt text guidelines are completely half-assed, but so long as alt text remains one of the FA criteria then it's got to be done right. Else it's just like saying the "professional prose" requirement is satisfied by chucking a few words down on a page.

Yours isn't the only article I've opposed because of its alt text, so don't take it personally. It's been much improved now though, and when the one remaining issue with the map in the lead is dealt with I'll be striking my opposition. See? No problem, Awickert did a fantastic job with the new alt text, much better than I could have. As for your opposition, I didn't think anything of it other than "I have to try and fix that!". In actuality, I'd like to thank you for pointing out the errors. The FAC process for me isn't about "getting an FA", it's about improving an article to a high quality, and with that quality of alt text, there's not even a chance the article could have been considered "excellent". 2 things:

1. Could you provide a ref for, "Past eruptions of Quizapu Crater ejected enormous amounts of ash that traveled as far as Brazil. After the 1932 eruption, the local vegetation was devastated, and the area remained barren until the 1990s. However, human life remained unimpacted?" I would try to dig something up but it's after 2 AM here and my eyes are falling out...
2. I started a pathetic stub of an article called Volcanic hazards. I imagine that it lies in your area of interest. If you keep writing volcano articles, it could hopefully be expanded into a nice overview that would be usable as a "see also" at the top of the hazards section, leaving the particular article for information exclusive to the article's topic.

WikiCup 2010 March newsletter

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. I was trying to find out if there have been more recent films or docudrama or dramatised documentaries on the event (including Johnstone) as I remember seeing one on TV. Possibly it was a re-run of the 1981 film, but I think there are others out there. By the way, I found home video footage on YouTube here. Any idea how far away that video was taken? David A. Johnston

Hey Ceran! I've got some time now.

I just got the book (Echoes of Fury) from the library; it looks like a useful resource, and you're welcome to ask if there's anything you want me to look up. I'm going to go over the text of the article; looks like a lot of citation cleanup and additional citations are needed, but those will come in time. If you could expand the ones with just a name and a page, that would be fantastic, because I can't read your mind and figure out what those are to do myself. (Well, I bet I could eventually figure them out, but it would be much quicker for you to do them.)

The inside cover of the book also has a map that helps give an overview of the situation; I'll do something in GIS (or maybe just with a USGS topo or orthophoto) to make a map that shows where key players were during the eruption. I've got Arc at work, but I'm installing GRASS at home in case I want to do something fancy here over the weekend.

Thanks for putting the article up for FAC. I've been following the discussion and a few questions occur to me:

• (1) Is it acceptable to notify the WikiProjects tagged on the talk page in the hope that more people review the article? Or is it better to wait for the FAC regulars and anyone else to get to the article as they work through them?
• (2) When you have an article waiting to be reviewed, is it expected to do a review of another article to help ease the load at FAC? I vaguely remember this being a courteous thing to do, and would be more than willing to do so, especially as some of the current articles at FAC look quite interesting (I wouldn't have time to look at more than one or two, unfortunately).
• (3) Has anyone looked closely at the sources used in the article yet? I'm not sure about a few of them, and that is one of the things that should be discussed, IMO.
• (4) This was all a bit sudden (I'm used to working on articles on a scale of months, not weeks), and one thing that slipped my mind was that two of the nominators are taking part in the WikiCup (you and me). Should that have been mentioned in the nomination? I had initially been ambivalent about being on the nomination, but then you persuaded me that I should be. Me working on this article was unexpected and unplanned, which is why the WikiCup didn't actually occur to me until now. If the WikiCup stuff should be mentioned in the nomination (from looking here, I think it should be), then please feel free to do so. 1.) Yes, of course it is! The Volcanoes WikiProject is not incredibly active, however. WP:BIO could be helpful.

2.) Yes, it's recommended. I regularly review articles at FAC - so you do not need to worry - but you are welcome to review an article there if you choose.

3.) No, I guess not. I have to admit I was a bit questioning of some sources, but once one of the source reviewers (Ealdgyth, Rafablu) gets around to reviewing we'll go from there.

4.) I will mention that if you have not already. As far as I know, we would both receive 100 points for the article being promoted to FA.

WikiCup 2010 April newsletter

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to ThinkBlue (submissions) and Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

User talk page deletion

Hi Ceranthor, belated congrats on the adminship! :) Speaking of which, can you explain your rationale on this? The user had just been blocked for 24 hrs and had an active block notice on their page.[1] They've made two more TP edits since, even making our poor adminbots lumber about. They were edit-warring two days in a row on the Canada article and there's no indication thay wish to vanish. I don't see any special reason to hide their wiki-history right now, they cab do just fine with the page blanked (once the block has expired the notice can be blanked). I had thought I had not had anything featured on TFA before, but it seems that if something you contributed to significantly ends up on the main page, that still counts, even if you didn't take part in the FAC process. re: G11 tag

I tagged it with the speedy tag since, even if there are few good sources in it, the press release tone, heavy external linking, and overall fluff content of the article make it clear that it qualifies as something that exists solely to promote the subject. I did not simply delete it directly myself because I feel that administrators deleting articles offhand without some kind of second opinion is something to avoid. Though CSD is for candidates that meet some very stringent criteria, the normal nomination and deletion process always has at least two sets of eyes on the article's deletion. I don't think we can contact them until (if) it is put in the queue for the main page. Any contact before then would have to be saying it is featured and may be featured on the main page. If anyone does contact them, pointing them at the articles on the volcano and the eruption would be a good idea as well, as they may be able to suggest improvements to those articles. I would offer to contact them, but I wouldn't know where to start and who to write to. Probably best to wait for the queue to be updated and for Awickert to get back. Well, it has been queued now! We should leave Awickert to contact the USGS if he knows how to and what to say (he gets back tonight). What I wanted to cover now was trying to minimise any vandalism. There will be the usual people helping out with vandalism reversion, but I thought it would be nice if us three could help out with that as well. Trouble is, I'm rubbish at the warnings and blocking stuff, so I'll just stick to reversions and watching the page when I'm around (for a couple of hours after midnight, and for about the last four hours of the UTC day). Hopefully you two can help out at other times. Obviously, if the vandalism gets bad (as with any TFA) some form of protection might be needed, but the tendency is to try and avoid that. I'm sensitive here to the fact that friends and relatives of those who died are still alive, so it wouldn't do for them to see the page in a vandalised state (that could be mentioned if the vandalism gets bad). Admins or bots will protect the article from being moved, and will protect the TFA picture being used, but it is worth double-checking the day before that this has happened. Hey, you both probably know all this already? :-) I might also give the article a once-over again tonight or tomorrow - some of the reference dating is a bit idiosyncratic. Awickert and Ceranthor, David Johnston was one of those TFAs that makes one proud of Wiki-- which doesn't happen often enough!! I was ashamed and embarrassed once when we ran an article about a deceased person on her birthday, in which we made unnecessary, gratuitous comments about her mother-- imagine the mother having to see that on her lost daughter's birthday! WikiCup 2010 May newsletter

We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by Hunter Kahn (submissions), Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) respectively. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Two of last year's final 8, Theleftorium (submissions) and Scorpion0422 (submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to White Shadows (submissions) for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help.
