I took a look at the mallard article and I tried to reference the the first book listed there. The premade template link that you sent me to does not show me how to make a refernce for two authors. OK, you watching? Like this - see my formatting, illustrating what you do with this, showing the diffs is often very helpful. So note that I can replace the 'first=, last=' with plain old author= and then stuff all the authors in the one category. X-ray specs

I've made another tweak to the uContribs tool. I've run it for yourself - updated numbers, plus the addition of analysis of your Wikipedia-space contribs. (Theoretically, this will be any-space) The notable feature of this is that the program can consolidate your edit counts into "families" - a family being defined as everything before the first slash (/). This gives a little further look into the user activities outside of article space.

All my new software is almost certainly wrong, so prizes for figuring out where it's gone awry. Of course, I already know it works perfectly! What a gem. "Issues and controversies", "Violence" (OR, should rely on one real review rather than stringing together primary studies), "Alternative approaches", "Defining recovery". I suspect a lot of that relies on primary studies and is OR rather than a due weight representation of what secondary reviews say. I'm not going to fuss, as I don't have time to research, but I think that stuff is what is chunking up the article size and it looks like attempts to keep fringe editors happy. OK. I'm not inclined to fuss over a non-compliant-with-MoS list with an editor who submits a perfectly fine FA to FAR either :-) I think I'll just let that one go; it's really not worth it to fuss over a good FA with someone who has never significantly edited any article, might not understand FA standards, and doesn't appear to know much about MoS either. Someday, Tony will see that list and fix it. I still think Violence is sending up whitewash red flags, but I've always thought that. Holidays

Thanks, we just had a week on the Isles of Scilly, no new birds for my British list, but Little Bunting, American Golden Plover and Red-eyed Vireo were good. The first Alder Flycatcher for Britain was in Cornwall for the two days before we returned to the mainland, but we missed it by a day, and had to settle for a Rosy Starling. Morocco next, Bald Ibis is the main bird plus assorted larks and wheatears. I'm useless at bird photography, so don't hold your breath! Cheese trees

I was inspecting the hooks at Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know, and I notice that there needs to be a source that states that the species is called cheese trees. I'm sure that you have a RS for something so basic.

I guess this was my first time looking at your userpage. I didn't know that you were an Aussie, or that Anon Dissident was one either. I love knowing that I have friends all over the world. I do the Great Midwest Trivia Contest, and I once had a player help in a chatroom from your country/continent. Tiger article edit

Hi Casliber,

I've made a few edits to the tiger article recently, but I'm not sure if one of my edits is allowed. In order to lend credence to the claim that unrelated tigers may sometimes be observed feasting on the same prey animal (despite being primarily solitary), I quoted a paragraph from one of my sources, describing a gathering of nine tigers at a single location. I'm still not entirely sure what's allowed with regards to copyright - is quoting a paragraph from a source without obtaining permission from the author first okay (I did reference the quote)? If it isn't, I'll delete it, no worries.

(I originally posted this question in the tiger talk page, but it didn't receive any responses).

Help!

Gosh Casliber, I've really done it this time, and desperately need your help. After the exchange about JayHenry's attorney I gave Ceoil a {{uw-preview}} template as a joke. Joking in kind, Ceoil left some obscenities in an edit summary to me. Unfortunately a passing admin User:Tanthalas39 (a good admin, I might add. Under normal circumstances we want admins who defend content contributors from attacks. It just so happened that this was a joke, not an attack, but the difference is hard to pick up on without knowing the history) gave Ceoil a block. I explained and Tanthalas quickly unblocked, but Ceoil was justifiably upset. You know how block logs are on this project. I know I'd be angry to get blocked as part of a misunderstanding. Anyway, Ceoil lashed out a bit, again justifiably. Yet another passing admin, User:MaxSem, gave a 72 hour block. I feel ill. It was just a joke that spiraled out of control, as can only happen on Wiki. MaxSem appears to have left on a short wiki break. I'm at a loss what to do. Ceoil, as you probably know, is one of the project's absolute best contributors, who doesn't deserve to be blocked for my joke gone awry, certainly not for 72 hours. 50K limit?

Cas, I saw your note on the FAC page about 51Kb being over the limit for FAC. That surprised me -- I don't recall an upper limit. Can you point me at where this is written down? I had a quick look at WP:FACR and didn't see anything there. This section of WP:SIZE seems to indicate 100K is really the upper limit for all articles, but perhaps whatever you're referring to is specific to FA? Well, using Dr PDA's size tool, there is a readable prose section, which for this article comes out to 52k as opposed to 130 odd kb for the whole shebang. Mike at WP:SIZE#Readibility issues, you have to look at readable prose rather than overall size. It has to do with (supposedly) average reader attention span being around 10,000 words max. That page has been around for as long as I have, and was scrutinized during that "Extra-long article committee" deletion debacle. Specific to WIAFA: SIZE is a MoS guideline that falls under Crit. 2, but it's frequently ignored by most reviewers (well, many reviewers frequently ignore a lot of things ... when I was reviewing, I always opposed articles above about 60KB, and I think everything above more or less 11,000 words should be FARC'd or should use better summary style, since I can't load them even on a fast connection). Rainbow Lorikeet split

How is the split going down? I am going to be in Vanuatu in March next year and that species is there, so I will try and get a photo of that subspecies, but it would be especially important to get a photo if it is a split species now. No Arses in Vanuatu. Try Tom (Aviceda), there are some in Queensland, and if he doesn't have any his photo group might. I have been in email contact with an ornithologist that has been ringing in New Guinea for 20 years and has offered me images. Tropicbirds

Yeah, I have been more or less trying to figure out the Federal Reserve's reserves in the last 2 weeks or so ;-) As the only other guys in Phaethontiformes would be Prophaethontidae, there is presently nothing to suggest against a merge. It ought to be de-merged eventually, but that I would postpone until we have a fix on where the while lineage actually does belong.

Maybe 5 years from now or so ;-)

Major depressive disorder - efficacy of treatment

I'll have a think about it later if I get some time. This isn't a subject I know anything about so can only comment from the pov of a new reader. I think the article should give the reader some idea of what is achievable by the two main therapies and also what happens anyway (the natural course of the disease -- you usually get better). There's also the effect of combining the two therapies. Perhaps comment on effectiveness can be better covered within the two treatment sections rather than in a third. Explaining early on what NICE, for example, regard as clinically useful, would help the reader know what is meant by "improved". I believe encyclopaedic articles should prefer to mention the facts rather than the research behind the facts, unless that research is particularly interesting or notable, or if the limitations of the research help the reader understand the limitations of the confidence behind those facts. The recent meta analyses do seem to be notable and the comments made in one seems to have stirred debate. Am I right here, or is this nothing new? Is it possible to confidently state something on the efficacy, or is it too controversial? If the limited effectiveness of the treatment is a point of controversy, then we would be wrong to be silent and give the impression that both therapies are very effective. This is just a quick brain dump. I'll try to write something later more coherent on the FAC or talk page. Colin°^Talk 09:40, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Religion ref in MDD article

What's your opinion about referencing the (currently-referenced) primary study--as well as the secondary study noted immediately afterwards, for that matter--regarding religiousness in the MDD article? I've been agonizing over this, because so many people (including, I presume, the majority of folks who'll read the article) are religious in one way or another, and so they might like to have this sort of information. Morocco

Surprisingly, no hassle at all, even in the souk of Marrakech. This was a fairly laid back trip, since the birds are largely the same as in southern Europe (although often different ssp). Ten new species for me though, and four others which I'd not seen in the western Palaeoarctic before. 129 species in total seen. Like I said, I'm no bird photographer, and my few feeble efforts aren't as good as the existing images. I've added a photo to Houbara Bustard, which didn't have one. The endangered Northern Bald Ibis was seen every day (apart from the last three when we were in the Atlas Mountains) in numbers ranging from 25 to 86 per day, and feeding flocks would come quite close if you got ahead of them and then kept still. Cold in the mountains at night (snow on the high tops), but a wood stove was lit in our room every afternoon. jimfbleak (talk) 13:23, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Hehehe, fairly standard practice in consultation-liaison psychiatry to use the availability of various items - physican availibility, an escalating assortment of medication for insomnia/pain/anxiety etc. in this way, the "don't worry, if X happens we can do Y", a sorta cloak of security. Not seen it written WRT attachment theory before, but nice to link it to a theoretical framework - can also link it to psychodynamic ideas too really WRT a secure frame (of availability) a la big Don Winnicott's Holding environment. Lotsa cool ways to look at things in psych. I thoroughly recommend Games People Play for a good read on relating to patients - easy to read and humrous at the same time, Becoming Attached by Robert Karen is a fantastic book as well which is a great introduction to attachment theory and written in clear english which is a pleasure to read so anyone can read it.

MDD FAC

Perhaps the three-initial acronyms are to be the end of me at FAC. I sense that some of the frustration is arising from the length of time it is taking for issues to be addressed, and in the meantime, more issues arise (for example, the prose deterioration that was introduced today is troubling to me (for example, Rating scales is now such a jumble of clauses, out of order, and confusing that I expect Tony would have something), and it's all still there). I think getting on issues quickly would be helpful, as the FAC page is mushrooming. How did you find time to write a DYK today ? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:58, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

The DYK was a pleasant diversion, which this page is less of. The good thing is most of the subclauses can go to daughter pages, which I have just done with Hamilton and will do with others. What I was wondering now was what happened to the comorbid section as I was sure those things were cited before and the inlines seem to have disappeared (??) That's why I'm now worried more about this article than earlier in the FAC: I left a link on the article talk page of what the Comorbid section looked like coming in to FAC, and it's been reduced to something that's problematic in terms of 1) prose, 2) comprehensiveness, and 3) focus (it's straying off topic now, and doesn't cover the basics of comorbidity and depression). And comorbidity in depression isn't a hard topic to research, there is so much to be said about it, sources are easy to come by, yet it's been reduced to some hard-to-parse phrases about people and their backgrounds. Look back at the link to the pre-FAC text I left on talk: the section was clear (albeit a bit brief, IMO). I'm not sure, but it seems like some editors may be basing edits on article abstracts only, rather than accessing full text. I don't know if those cite tags are warranted: if I had better journal access, I might be more able to help. Maybe you need to ask Eubulides or Tim Vickers to come in, as they have good journal access ? From a FAC point of view, the FAC is such a Dog's Dinner that it's hard to tell what is addressed and what isn't, but each time I go back to the article to check, I find more jumbled prose. And based on RCC experience, a restart isn't effective to clear things up until/unless reviewing editors understand that they need to manage the FAC page differently. I wonder if this is an indication of why we have so few FAs in the psychology realm: what a jumble! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 04:20, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Little Pied Cormorant

Hi Casliber... I see you have been improving the Little Pied Cormorant page and inter alia have adopted the Microcarbo genus name. I haven't reverted it, because I see you are basing this on a new and reliable source (which I don't have), but as you no doubt know Phalacrocoracine taxonomy is even more of a mess than most groups and we have been struggling with it on the Cormorant family page. So I wonder if you could hold your horses before doing any more genus changing in the family, while we seek consensus? It would be highly desirable if the genus names on individual species pages continued to reflect the ones used on the family page. For the moment there we are sticking to a single genus Phalacrocorax, though that is certainly not immutable - I and others who have wrestled with this lot would certainly welcome continuing discussion not to mention the introduction of recent research results. OK, to make matters even more fun, the same book (Christidis and Boles 2008) also has Phalacrocoraciformes listed as the order name, with Pelicans placed in Ciconiiformes, and the whale-billed stork as close relative (to pelicans). It gives a good summary of teh recent developments taxonomically and which studies support what. Alastair Haines situation

Hi Casliber-
I read your note on AH's talk page and I thought I'd attempt to provide some insight into my thoughts that I may not have provided on his talk page.
The first block was placed solely because he violated his arbcom editing restrictions. To characterize what happened before the block as an argument is not entirely accurate: he was close to violating his arbcom sanctions, I warned both him and the other edit warrer with exactly the same warning. He responded with a statement something along the lines of 'this is none of your business, I'm not edit warring but everyone else is' (I'm paraphrasing here, I don't remember what exactly he said) I replied something along the lines of 'actually, that's not correct'. After that I walked away and waited to see what he would do and... lo and behold, he ignored my warning and reverted. Per his arbcom sanctions he is confined to one revert per page per week, and the diffs clearly show that he violated this. Thus, I blocked him for 48 hours. That's when the circus began of him removing my statements and replacing them with misquotations out of context. Somewhat bewildered, I went out and found an uninvolved admin with whom I've never before had any major interactions (so AH couldn't say it was just a buddy of mine- although he did anyway) and asked him to review the block- which he did and agreed with me about the correctness of the block. He decided, after some rather bad behavior on AH's part, to lock the talk page and extend the block.
While I do support transparency and the idea that admins are not above other editors and don't really have the right to boss others around- I would strongly suggest that for the sake of your own sanity you not get involved. This is a very messy situation that seems to operate much like a black hole- it sucks everything in and all you're left with is bad feelings all around. You are free, of course, to ignore my advice since it's only that, advice, but... L'Aquatique[talk] 22:21, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Banksia serrata type specimen

I'm reading Richard Fortey's Dry Storeroom No. 1: The Secret Life of the Natural History Museum, and I noticed that he includes a colour plate of the Banksia serrata type specimen. It's a picture of an old book, open, with the left hand side showing the pressed and dried type specimen, and the right hand side showing an illustration of it. Dear all, as it is often customary to end a talkpage entry with some sort of "cheers", "regards", "sincerely" or "yours faithfully", I appended "cheers" onto my sig as in 95/100 cases I was ahving to type out the damn thing or something similar, and I would rather the impression of a positive tone more often than less often. Now, Mattisse has a problem with it, so I will stick up a straw poll here to see what/if anyone else cares. Perhaps there's a good reason

Hey Cas, there's an editor who never signs his posts on my talk page and till now it kind of gets up my nose. But I've just noticed that you're in the Category:Wikipedians who have opted out of automatic signing. So perhaps there are some reasonable and good grounds for not signing posts; and perhaps I'll open my mind to that possibility. Are there any? -Sticks66 03:48, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

• Talk page stalker here. I don't know of a good reason to not sign posts. There are a few (very few) Wikipedians whose signature doesn't include a link to their page (any of them) and even fewer (I know only one) who does not have a timestamp on their signature. Those folks are able to do that because the actual record of their posting is in the history and the signature is a commonly extended convenience. However, your talk page is your talk page. If you rely on that commonly extended convenience and an editor refuses to extend it you have a relatively wide latitude in editing their posts in order to suit you. So long as your edit can't be construed as changing the meaning of their post and you are doing it for what would appear to be a good reason, you are usually ok--this means you can add {{unsigned}} (remember to substitute it!) to their posts, roll their posts back (though this is within your rights most users consider it pretty rude) or (lowest impact) simply ask them to not post on your talk page.
• Opting out of automatic signing is a different matter entirely. I opt out of it in order to stop sinebot from edit conflicting with me when I go back to sign my posts. :) Really! I also find it convenient to append comments to my old ones without fear that some garish "you didn't sign this" message appearing. Can't speak for Casilber, but those are my thoughts. BLP cases

If you're searching for cases related, I think two of the more important are the Badlydrawnjeff case and the Footnoted quotes case. Footnoted quotes isn't really about BLP content, but it established the "special enforcement" provisions that relate specifically to BLP. The Matthew Hoffman case also wasn't directly about BLPs, but it did get into how we deal with BLP-like problems involving editors and administrators who edit with their real names. Fair amount of interesting discussion in the workshop and on the proposed decision talkpage, although you'll have to wade through neck-deep crap to find it.

Going through the closed cases page, here are some links:

• Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Sarah_Palin_protection_wheel_war (wheel war on the protection of a high profile BLP)
• Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Footnoted_quotes (special enforcement provisions)
• Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Bluemarine (The subject of the case was also the subject of a BLP, Bluemarine edited the article about him almost exclusively and the issues discussed related to his conduct and the leeway given to an article subject)
• Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Privatemusings (only tangentially related to BLP, mostly "conduct on BLPs" and no new principles that I'm aware of)
• Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Jeffrey_Vernon_Merkey (same basic issue as Bluemarine, subject of a BLP editing Wikipedia)
• Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Badlydrawnjeff (prohibits admins from undeleting content removed as violating BLP without full discussion with deleting administrator)
• Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Daniel_Brandt_deletion_wheel_war (More internal drama than anything else, but is specifically about the deletion of a BLP)

Those I think are the big cases that deal with BLPs in 2008 and 2007. I'm sure I'm missing one or two, but if you look into them I'm sure any major principles articulated are cited to previous cases if they aren't new. I didn't follow arbitration prior to 2007, and the descriptions aren't very in depth, so I'm not completely sure which if any of the pre-2007 cases apply. Gawd, gotta get 'round to making all teh befanged stuff a Featured Topic at some stage, a more immediate one is critters in my garden what make drive my dog crazy and make him bark at 5AM...Laughing Kookaburra, Rainbow Lorikeet, Willie Wagtail (FA), Brown Rat (in neighbour's compost bin), Superb Fairy-wren (we..ell, they don't make him bark but they should be included for all-round cuteness)....the first two species have tunnelled a hole in my 6m high date palm and littered the patio with crap. Greek proofing on Wikisource

Would you mind bringing your knowledge of Greek to bear on these three Wikisource pages for me please: [8], [9], [10]? It should only take five minutes I think. If you've got a Wikisource or unified account, you can correct any errors you find; else you can let me know and I'll fix them.

Easy peasy you say... nearly all of the yellow pages on this work contain Greek. s:la:Liber:De assensione Stoici quid senserint.djvu. If you could verify even a few of them, especially p.20, that would be fantastic. John Vandenberg ^(chat) 15:57, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi again, we have a category for them now on English Wikisource: s:Category:Pages with missing Greek characters.
