Question from Catchwords on New Zealand grebe (07:11, 22 April 2022)

Hi I've added some information but I'm not sure how to insert a new reference for it. --Catchwords (talk) 07:11, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

I've put the reference in, but it is telling me there is a problem with the date. Not sure how to fix this. Thanks! Catchwords (talk) 07:28, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
Catchwords, Hi, this is an issue with date formatting in the references. I just changed 2022-04 to April 2022 and it works fine now. But I don't know if the reference you used is reliable or not. Regards, ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 10:19, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

Question from Lichenicolous (22:24, 25 April 2022)

Hi there, TheAafi (and all)!

I am relatively new here, but we're trying to do something a bit different than your average term paper for a class project. This semester, we are having students research fungal species with no current (or only stub) Wikipedia pages. However, I'm just realizing that I don't currently have the credentials to help them create pages if the page doesn't already exist (and can be edited).

I've had this current account for many weeks now, but I believe I just need the edits. Do you have any guidance on this front? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. We look forward to continuing to build the mycological content of Wikipedia :)

Cheers! --Lichenicolous (talk) 22:24, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Replying to myself, TheAafi, and all -
I think I've made some headway here (looking into AfC) but still am open to suggestions. Thanks again! Lichenicolous (talk) 23:22, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Just subscribing to this section, as I just made a new section at Lichenicolous's page. Happy Editing--IAmChaos 06:02, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
Lichenicolous, I have always admired such ideas as these help in developing the research skills and ideas in students, and since my professors at university are "adamant" for handwritten assignments because they feel the students do nothing but just copy paste; I often feel myself tired while having to write an assignment. I research for several days and make a draft on my laptop, and then begin handwriting.... Anyways, coming to the point, as you noted in your response to IAmChaos on your talk page, AfC is a nice place, and for that having a registered Wikipedia account would suffice. Once several edits are made from a certain account, one can directly publish into the mainspace. However, it is necessary that no plagiarism is done and that the subject of the topic is a notable one, and that reliable sources are provided. So in the current case, your students can just create drafts and submit them to AfC for review, and as I said, if the subject is notable and if the sources are provided, the drafts would be approved in a first-go but keep in mind that we have a huge backlog of over 3100 drafts at AfC. Please let me know if you have further questions, and I'll happily respond on time because I'm no more travelling. Regards, ─ The Aafī (talk) 23:59, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

Resubmitting Draft for Pritika Chowdhry

Hi. I came across the draft for Pritika Chowdhry and have been editing it and incorporating your comments (which were very helpful, thanks!). I added these three reliable sources:

edited Pritika Chowdhry’s draft, and tended to your comments. Hello TheAafi. Your account has been granted the "filemover" user right, either following a request for it or due to a clear need for the ability to move files. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:File mover for more information on this user right and under what circumstances it is okay to move files. When you move a file please remember to update any links to the new name as well! If you do not want the file mover right anymore, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Thank you for improving articles in April and May, and congrats to the new right! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:20, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Gerda Arendt, Thanks for the supplement. My academic life is a bit messed up, as a number of grouchy professors ask for "hand-written assignments" and I'm very bad at handwriting. I tell them, I'll make one using Microsoft Word but they feel every student is a copy-paster. Since this is my last semester of the course, I've been very much "less-active" on several venues including the DYK. I hope one day we get a nice quality of professors who tend to change and upgrade the system. Thanks again, ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 10:52, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Timtrent, I was engaged in the thread much earlier than you. I'm just shocked to see Hatchens blocked. I trust MER-C because they're a fellow global anti-spam editor. I have not known Hatchens to be associated with the UPE stuff and have seen him as an editor who makes mistakes and learns, but we cannot deny the evidences that editors like MER-C have seen and endorsed. The recent comment from my mentor Rosguill is something that's interesting. It needs to be considered. ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 19:55, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
We have seen them in the same way. But admins you and I trust have the evidence to have formed a different view, and it is right that they have formed it. New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello Aafi,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 804 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 852 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello Aafi,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here.   Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 12769 articles, as of 08:00, 17 November 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

Question from Camilo Varelas (22:47, 27 June 2022)

Hi. What's the convention for introducing an acronym for, say, an organization? For instance, let's say I'm introducing a group called the "Angels of Shoegazing," is it customary on wikipedia to immediately follow that up with (AOS), so that it ends up looking like this: ...the Angels of Shoegazing (AOS)"?

And if so, is it permissible to refer to the organization as AOS, thereafter? --Camilo Varelas (talk) 22:47, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Kevin Adderley

First there was an article, then there was a blank. I did not know if the editor was going to return to the article so I sent it to draft. I saw no request for G7 from the author. In any event, I think it may be solved. i am just wondering why Kevin Adderley is showing up as an article i created...all i created was the draft move and a CSD. Bruxton (talk) 04:16, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

Bruxton, The author had blanked the article fifteen minutes prior to me tagging it with g7. WP:G7 explicitly says that If the sole author blanks a page other than a userspace page, a category page, or any type of talk page, this can be taken as a deletion request. The Aafī (talk) 04:22, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
Understood, I will move it back. Because it is showing as an article I created now. Sometimes they blank them before a redirect - and sometimes in response to the tag and talk page message from me. Bruxton (talk) 04:24, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
Bruxton, No. Leave everything as it is. It is adequately tagged. Mainspace article as g7 and draftified article as uncontroversial cleanup. Whenever you move anything you move its history as well, and if there was no redirect earlier (involving WP:SWAP), the new redirect that gets created gets your name as the creator. This is normal. You shouldn't draftify blanked articles. ─ The Aafī (talk) 04:26, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
I see, I have no way to know the editor's intent when they blank, but in the future I will assume they are requesting a deletion. Bruxton (talk) 04:29, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
And thank you for your help. I saw we were editing and tagging simultaneously - but I appreciate the help for my future as a reviewer. Bruxton (talk) 04:31, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
Bruxton, Both the article and draft have been deleted under G6 and G7. ─ The Aafī (talk) 05:05, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello Aafi,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.

New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

Infobox person

I noticed your edit to Emily Sachar, and your edit summary, which said in part "remove non-notable spouse per template documenation". I did not undo the removal of the spouse because it was unsourced in the article, but your basis for removal is incorrect. The template documentation says this about other relatives, e.g., children, parents, siblings, etc. Spouses do not have to have articles at Wikipedia to be included in the infobox.--Bbb23 (talk) 12:22, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Fateh Muhammad Panipati

On 15 August 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Fateh Muhammad Panipati, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Fateh Muhammad Panipati has been called the al-Jazari of contemporary times? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Fateh Muhammad Panipati. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Fateh Muhammad Panipati), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

NPP Award for 2020

The New Page Patroller's Barnstar

For over 100 article reviews during 2020. Thank you for patrolling new pages and helping us out with the backlog! -MPGuy2824 (talk) 03:19, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Here is a barnstar to show appreciation for the NPP reviews you did back in 2020. We realize this is late, but NPP fell behind in some coordination activities. We are just getting caught up. If you don't want to receive "old" barnstars, please just ignore this and reply (with a ping) to let us know not to send you any more. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 03:19, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Dear @MPGuy2824; thanks for the barnstar. I feel that we should have some more coordinators at NPP and I wish to be one but the life makes me occupy elsewhere very badly. ─ The Aafī (talk) 05:56, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
We've recently got some new coordinators for NPP each focusing on different aspects, which is why you'd notice a lot more discussion on the relevant talk pages. We expect things to get better. If and when you find the time for coordination, you should look into Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Coordination and see if a task there interests you. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 06:07, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Need your help on Imarat-e-Shariah and Madrasa Islamia Shamsul Hoda. As you are much experienced than me in this type of articles please help. Thank You ——— Poliiii (talk) 16:14, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

@Poli Hunt: I just removed some titles from Imarat-e-Shariah article. You should consider removing excessive citations. One good citation at the end of the sentence is enough. New Article on un-sung muslim Freedom Fighter

There has been huge gap in covering the stories of muslim freedom fighters who fought for Indian Independence. One of them was MKM Ameer Hamza. I have written an article with credible sources attached in the reference. Will request your support in getting it published. Umairsy (talk) 07:08, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

User:Umairsy, I noted this message on User:TheAafi's talk page and think this would be a great candidate to be moved into mainspace. However, I would recommend that the subject's full name be listed in the lede, rather than "MKM Ameer Hamza". What does M.K.M. stand for? Kind regards, AnupamTalk 18:42, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
Dear Anupam, Thanks for the review. I re-checked referred articles. Though each articles suggest name to be MKM Ameer Hamza, none of it contains it's full form. I removed MKM from Infobox and main text, but cannot change the main heading. If possible you, will request editing the heading as "Ameer Hamza" and approving the article. Thanks. Umairsy (talk) 23:06, 03 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Umairsy. I reviewed the draft after it was put for CSD by @Bbb23. The draft contained text that had nothing to do with Ameer Hamza and I've removed that. You need to explicitly include content that makes it reasonable that why he was notable? WP:GNG is far from being met, and I do not see any subjective indications either. ─ The Aafī (talk) 18:03, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
Dear TheAafi The article has reference of prominent publication like Indian Express, which fulfils **GNG Reliable** clause? The govt. of India's website has dedicated page in his respect (again linked) Also, there are other articles in the vernacular language which mention honour of this freedom fighter and recognition by the local Tamil Govt. I searched more and found that even digital books and other article gives Ameer Hamza honoury mentions. Also, there are other freedom fighters of INS army who has dedicated page, then why not this freedom fighter? He even deserves national honour, if you really think of it.
Mention in the book: https://www.google.co.in/books/edition/Hear_Out/JA40EAAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1 (page no. 43) . This detailed interview is also covered on FB, but not referred here as it's on FB. Ref: https://ta-in.facebook.com/aloor.shanavas/videos/freedom-fighter-veteran-ameer-hamza/1945050212386259/
Thanks for editing to improve the article. I will add ref. of book and attempt to re-submit it. Umairsy (talk) 00:12, 04 September 2022 (UTC)
@Umairsy, we need more than one source to establish notability. Indian Express article is reliable but it is no more than a death news and does not talk significantly about Ameer Hamza. I did check the Hear Out book before declining the draft. It contains no more than two lines, when more than a paragraph is usually expected. I'd be glad to help with this but you need to check where the subject has been significantly discussed, whether in print, internet, books, wherever. Best, ─ The Aafī (talk) 05:07, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
@ TheAafi,I further searched a lot and located these two old articles. He is mostly un-sung but credible figure. This is online publication, with decent FB following. https://keelakaraitimes.com/mkm-ameer-hamsa/
Another is a blogpost, which I understand isn't accepted. However, it has an image, which is unique and adds to the credibility of Ameer Hamza himself. I will tag atleast first link in the article as a reference. Once we have Wikipage, it will gain traction, and can motivate mainstream media to cover his story. Please give it a consideration. Umairsy (talk) 13:06, 06 September 2022 (IST)
Umairsy, I'm assuming that this book must have some coverage on Ameer Hamza. It has a separate volume discussing freedom struggle activists from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. Unfortunately, I do not have the book with me right now. Another note is that, we do not need online sources; offline sources are as much reliable as the online ones. What GNG requires is: significant coverage in multiple, reliable and independent sources, whether they are newspapers, journals or books. Though we have subjective criteria of notability for a variety of subjects, we do not have any such criteria for "freedom fighters of any country", so, I'd disregard this thing. Regards, ─ The Aafī (talk) 12:36, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

Regarding the draft of 'Bhim S. Dahiya'

Thank you for your comment!

I have made some corrections accordingly, it would be great if you could just check it out once again :) DetuchVonzer (talk) 16:42, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

@DetuchVonzer, I can't guarantee but I will do some tidbits. Early life and education section needs references and career section needs reformation in my opinion. I'll do some bits and leave everything else to you. ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:15, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
Due to his education taking place approximately 50-60 years back, I'm unsure if I'll be able to find a notable reference from a reputed source, online that is. I'll try my best! Okay, noted. If you could guide me, in which sense does it need reformation? Okay, thank you! DetuchVonzer (talk) 17:22, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
@DetuchVonzer Primary sources containing details on his education should be helpful. Unsourced content is generally removed. I've reformatted two paragraphs in the career section and it should guide you. ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:25, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
Alright. Okay, I'll check them out and reformat them accordingly. Also, some of his books have suddenly disappeared. Is that a glitch in the system or was it intentional ? DetuchVonzer (talk) 17:30, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi @DetuchVonzer. Since Wikipedia is not a directory, we do not generally add each and every book under the sections of literal works/works/books. I'd advise listing books that are more notable or some of those that are listed here. Best, ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:39, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
Oh right, makes sense! I'm a bit new to Wikipedia, hence just discovered the history section. I'll look into that as well then. Thanks. DetuchVonzer (talk) 17:43, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi, I have reformatted them accordingly, would be great if you could check it out! Also, I had some doubts. Should I hyperlink a (place, profession, university, etc) multiple times or just once would be fine? As for a reference for his primary education, I could only come up with a board of directors page for a school situated in Jammu, I suppose that's not much of value. It also only mentions his doctorate, none of his other degrees are mentioned. Here it is reagrdless, (http://modelacademy.in/oldweb/bod.html#). I'll try finding something else. DetuchVonzer (talk) 02:20, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
Also, are any small quotes or lectures in seminars held at some universities (published in reputed newspaper) worth adding in references ? DetuchVonzer (talk) 02:26, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi @DetuchVonzer, I'd suggest leaving that out. It is better to remove all the unreferenced information right now and include it when you get any resources. What we care for first is notability and Dahiya's being a member of legislative body at some time of his life fulfills it. We also link things only things once and do not link things that are commonly known to everyone. Best, ─ The Aafī (talk) 05:34, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
I can get information regarding his education, like the actual documents but it'll take some time (for verification purposes only as I wouldn't want them to be public). Would that be of any use ?
or would I specifically require a direct reference of his education? Okay. Alright. Except for the education section as of right now, is everything else alright ? DetuchVonzer (talk) 08:10, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
Well, that's something to be avoided but I guess such a person might have been biographed. If there's a CV of him available at any repository of an institution where he taught, it'd be a good primary source. But as I said, we care for notability and in this case it is something else that adds to his notability. That's to say, my advise is that keep the details that have references available, whether online or offline, but reliable, and remove everything else. If you can do this later, I'll proceed moving this to mainspace. Best, ─ The Aafī (talk) 04:03, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi Aafī. Okay, I can understand. Perhaps as of right now, can we at least mention his doctorate ? as that's mentioned in many places, such as WorldCat as well. I might have an offline newspaper mention, I'll need to dig it out, what would be the procedure of verifying it? Alright, except for the Education section, I could go ahead with the removal USIEF mention and the Visiting Professor in Yemen remark. Other than that, I think everything is mentioned somewhere. If anything else that should be removed, then please let me know. Thank you. DetuchVonzer (talk) 04:16, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
@DetuchVonzer, I've accepted the draft on the basis of his being a member of a legislative house which meets our notability criteria listed at WP:NPOL. I've not checked other details and thus added a tag that it needs more references for verification. If you feel an offline reference discusses him, you can include such a reference at the end of any sentence/fact and remove everything else where you fear that sources do not exist. Best, ─ The Aafī (talk) 04:25, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
Okay, thank you so much for your help! Do you mean I keep those sentences and add a link as a reference where I uploaded a photocopy of that article? I'm a bit confused. Otherwise, everything's fine. I'll remove all the things as said by tonight. Thank you again! DetuchVonzer (talk) 04:32, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
Hope you're doing well, If possible, please tell how I can use offline sources for the information here. Thanks. DetuchVonzer (talk) 16:11, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi @DetuchVonzer. You should be able to get more details at WP:CS. Best, ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:20, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi Aafi, After thoroughly checking the link, I was able to gain some clarity. As of right now, I have some newspaper articles in hand about the subject. Should I upload them to Google Drive so that you can verify them or is there some other way I'll need to proceed Best. DetuchVonzer (talk) 08:36, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi DetuchVonzer. It is really not necessary for you to upload the newspaper cuttings anywhere. You can just add a citation mentioning complete details of the source where any fact/news appeared. You should also have a look at WP:INDENT and WP:THREAD so that you can understanding how responses should be made more convenient. Best, ─ The Aafī (talk) 14:01, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I added the offline sources as per their availability. With it, I added his education back but shorter and also his USIEF mention. I think everything has been done for now. Please share any changes/improvements that can be made. Best. DetuchVonzer (talk) 09:23, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
