talk page access?

Given these Nazi slurs, is it a good idea to let this permabanned troll retain talk page access? Reyk YO! 20:51, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi Reyk! Sorry for taking so long to respond to your message and your questions here! Life has been keeping me busy, and I'm just now getting caught up with the Wikipedia messages, emails, requests, and discussions that were sent to me while I was offline. :-)
Who is this IP user? Is it an LTA, or someone else that we know? More information will help me to judge as to whether or not I would've revoked talk page access in this situation or not. If you could provide that, I'd appreciate it. :-)
To answer your question in a general manner: I will typically revoke talk page access from a user who's currently blocked if they are:
  1. an LTA who is known to abuse their user talk page or the user talk pages of their previously-blocked sock puppet accounts in the past
  2. currently using their user talk page in an intentionally abusive manner, or
  3. if they're continuing to use their user talk page for purposes that are not related to the legitimate discussion or appeal of their block, and after they've been warned and/or asked to stop.
There's obviously going to be situations that don't fall into that list, but the vast majority of the user talk page access revocations I've performed as an admin will fall into one of them. Examples where I've revoked talk page access: Someone repeatedly edits their user talk page to add threats and blatant personal attacks toward the blocking admin and after they were blocked for repeatedly adding blatant vandalism. Someone creates an unblock request with the intent to troll the blocking admin (the reason given will be blatantly obvious and without question... lol). Someone pastes content from an article or page that's related to a subject that they're topic banned from and onto their user talk page, and then uses their user talk page as a place to edit and modify that content. Someone uses their user talk page to repeatedly make very small or meaningless edits back-and-fourth, on-and-on, in a pattern over-and-over, and with the purpose of getting their edit count to 500 so that they'll be able to edit pages that are extended-confirmed protected (this is typically seen with temporarily-blocked accounts and with a duration that will expire).
In this situation, the IP user is blocked for block evasion, which obviously means that they've been blocked on other IP addresses or ranges, or blocked while using at least one account, and they've taken steps in order to evade those blocks and continue editing. This usually factors pretty heavily in my judgement as to whether or not I believe that this user's intent was to intentionally troll, annoy, use personal attacks in an intentionally harmful manner, etc. I've see the term "neo-Nazi troll" thrown around on Wikipedia a lot... much more than it should be. If, for example, the user was not blocked for evasion and if they legitimately believed that this is what they were doing, I'd instead ask the user not to use personal attacks in their responses like that, and to focus on the evidence and edits instead. Give them a chance to understand and stop. Honestly, it all depends on context and other factors...
I hope this answers your questions. Let me know if I can help you or answer any more questions for you, and I'll be happy to do so. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:01, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
It's probably no longer an issue since he's stopped ranting for now. But for future reference, this is a long term abuser who got permabanned about a decade ago and since then has popped up again and again to make a nuisance of himself at AfD. The Nazi thing is because he thinks deleting bad fancruft articles is the same as Third Reich style book burning, so people who nominate a lot of awful fiction articles for deletion (or just vote delete) must be neonazis. I don't think he's ever used the talkpage of his blocked IPs for a legitimate purpose, just trolling and name-calling, and at this point there's no way he's ever going to be allowed back, so IMO every sock block of his new accouts should automatically come with a talk page block- but I suspect I might be in the minority there. Cheers. Reyk YO! 08:54, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
Reyk - Ah, that certainly adds some important context and information to the matter. ;-) If this user is known to use the user talk pages of his/her sock puppet accounts to be disruptive and abusive, I'm inclined to agree with you. I will revoke talk page access from any user account that I block where I know the user is an LTA and has used their sock puppet accounts' user talk pages to be disruptive, abusive, and use it to threaten others. It's a no-brainer to me in those cases; it's necessary and will almost certainly prevent further abuse from occurring. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:02, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Your opinion

Can I get your opinion about Template:Lists of historic properties. It's been added to a number of articles, and then the template creator adds a bunch of their photos to the article (like Gilbert, Arizona). I'm not really sure it's part of any "series", other than a personal photo collection. Just want a second opinion on its usefulness. Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 19:15, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

Don't you think it would be a good idea to talk to Marine 69-71?--Bbb23 (talk) 19:28, 7 December 2019 (UTC)
@Bbb23: We had dialogue at User talk:Magnolia677/Archive 12#Historic Buckeye and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of historic properties in Buckeye, Arizona. Magnolia677 (talk) 17:29, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
Hi Magnolia677! I apologize for the delay responding to your message and your request for input. You say that the template has been "added to a number of articles", and then immediately follow by saying that the "template creator adds a bunch of their photos to the article" afterwards. Did you mean to say that the template creator then added a bunch of their photos to the template? (Which would, in-turn, transclude those photos onto the articles and pages that link to it?) I just want to make sure that I understand your concerns and that I don't miss anything. Did you reach out to Marine 69-71 directly with your concerns, as Bbb23 suggested above? How did it go? The discussions you linked to in your message above appeared to just be an AFD discussion, along with a discussion between Marine 69-71 and another admin (Tony the Marine) regarding this list and the sources used for it... Let me know when you can; I want to make sure that you've addressed these concerns, and I'll be happy to help you further if you have any questions or need additional input... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:17, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Concerns about paid editing on page you are an active member of

Hi, I would like to draw your attention to User:KartikeyaS343 activities on Tun M, for which I have direct knowledge that edit was made in exchange to payment Ekalavya12 (talk) 14:03, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

Really? Would you mind editing from your actual account please? KartikeyaS343 (talk) 16:32, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
This is my actual account, and thats not the subject. The subject is continued abuse of T&C by this sockpuppet and multiple others. Ekalavya12 (talk) 07:24, 12 December 2019 (UTC)
Ekalavya12 - If you have actual evidence (diffs, discussions, edits, things on-wiki that you can actually provide) that will support your accusations here and prove that KartikeyaS343 engaged in undisclosed paid editing and in violation of the Wikimedia Terms of Use, you should start a discussion here and provide that information. My guess is that you don't have that kind of information at all, and that you're leaving me this message for illegitimate reasons and with ill-intentions in a worst case scenario, or with speculation that's completely unfounded and/or speculation derived from a dispute, conflict, or other matter you're involved with in a best case scenario. Either way, your accusations here are regarded as completely uncivil, which is a violation of Wikipedia's policies and founding principles regarding the interaction and communication with others.
Please do not make accusations toward other editors like this, and please do not reach out to administrators or other editors, or start discussions anywhere on Wikipedia in order to ask others to investigate or look into a Wikipedia user, and without providing the satisfactory amount of evidence, details, links, and information required in order to sufficiently support your accusations. Thank you. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:38, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Advice

Hi Oshwah, don't know if you're around these days but if so, I could use some advice. You're always very good at knowing how to deal with problem situations... I'm having some trouble with an editor in the gyros article. Their behavior is somewhat agressive, making accusations of other editors "pushing an agenda", being "an uncultured dunce", etc., which is making it difficult to discuss it calmly. I'm never really sure whether I should respond to this kind of incivility, for example to ask them to strike the comments, leave a Uw-npa warning, or to just try to ignore it. What do you think?

On the one hand, it seems like a minor issue, even a bit stupid, whether to use the term "french fries" or just "fries", which the editor insists have different meanings. On the other hand, they haven't provided any convincing arguments or sources, but have made the same change four times now (though not in one day), despite ongoing discussion on the talk page. I haven't reverted their latest but left them an edit-warring warning. Several editors have commented and all have opposed and/or reverted the change. Any suggestions of how to proceed? Should I take it to WP:DRN? I've never had to do that before. Thanks... --IamNotU (talk) 18:50, 15 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi IamNotU! I am definitely still around and active on Wikipedia! That will definitely not change! ;-) I've just been busy lately, and I've unfortunately been having to go through "peaks and valleys" in relation to my activity on Wikipedia throughout the year.
When users behave uncivilly toward one another in a dispute or discussion, what I recommend that others do in these situations (or, to state it more accurately, what I recommend that others not do) largely depends on whether or not they're directly involved in the discussion and whether or not they're the intended recipient of the uncivil comments and responses. Where exactly is it happening? Your link pointed me to the Gyro (food) article, where I see quite a bit of edits and edit summary use in the edit history over the last few days, and I see quite a bit of activity on the article's talk page over the last few days as well (which is what you talked about above). Who's making the uncivil comments? Can you link me to the specific diffs that are leaving you feeling concerned?
Regardless of whether or not you're the recipient and intended target of the uncivil comments, you don't want to ignore the behavior if you see it or run into it. That behavior is not in compliance with policy, and if you do nothing, it may inadvertently send the message to this user that this behavior is acceptable and tolerated here universally. If someone is engaging in clear, unambiguous, and unacceptable behavior in regards to civility and the use of personal attacks toward other editors, we as experienced editors have a duty and a morale obligation to step in and do something about it.
If you are the actual recipient and the intended target of the incivility you're describing, you don't want to engage in templating that user with generic warnings and notices about civility and NPA in response to it. It will likely lead to more heated responses and uncivil comments as a result. They could take your warnings the wrong way, thinking that you're trying to cart them off by leaving them a few warnings and then reporting them to be blocked immediately afterwards and in retaliation to the dispute and the conflict, or that you're trying to trade "blows for blows", or some other belief that they come up with... Regardless, templates in this situation are careless, they show that their behavior is affecting you negatively, and they often bring the opposite result. In this situation, if you're the intended target and the recipient of uncivil comments and personal attacks, you need to reach out to the user on his/her user talk page in a separate discussion that's outside of the discussion that it came from, and leave a personal message regarding the behavior. Be honest, express your feelings, talk about the concerns, explain that they're not acceptable and how it's impacting the discussion, and ask that it stop - but do so in a manner that's positive, kind, and respectful. Politely ask that it no longer continue by putting it as a request and in the form of a question - don't use a statement or demand that it stop. "Will you please help me to resolve this dispute peacefully by no longer resorting to these impolite comments toward me?" will more likely come with a positive response and result than, "Do not make any more uncivil comments toward me." From there, if things continue, you've given the user a polite request and a fair chance to stop. From there, I think that leaving appropriate escalating warnings (templated or not) is fine. If they won't positively respond to kindness, then it's likely that they won't respond to anything else.
If you are not the actual recipient and the intended target of the incivility you're describing, I also believe that reaching out to the user with a custom message will have the best chance of yielding a positive response and result. However, depending on the situation, a templated warning, a custom message stating that this is not to continue, or a notice that they'll be the subject of an ANI or other discussion may be appropriate. However, if it can be helped, you should try and reach out directly as a first resort, and kindly ask them to stop.
Also, since I didn't mention it earlier in this response - leaving a notice for violating 3RR and for edit warring was the right thing to do as well. I've added full protection to the article to encourage everyone involved to discuss the matter on the article's talk page, rather than revert the article in a back-and-forth manner. Please let me know if you have any more questions or need any more input or advice. I'll be happy to answer your questions and help you with anything that you need. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:22, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
Hey Oshwah, thanks for your answer! I appreciate the advice about not using templates if I'm the recipient of unpleasant remarks, but also not to ignore it, and try leaving a personal note on the user's talk page. The last time I tried that was with a different person a couple of years ago. I tried to write it in a thoughtful way, but they reacted with even more hostility... Ever since then I've been afraid to interact on that level with people who seem confrontational, and just tried to ignore it when it happens - which isn't very often. But maybe I had put it more like "please don't speak to me in that way, it's unacceptable" etc., rather than as you said, something like "Will you please help me to resolve this dispute peacefully". Maybe I'll try to do something like that with this person.
They haven't said anything really awful I guess, the worst was "uncultured dunce". Some people take an accusative tone, and "ridicule your opponent" ad hominem style of arguing - not unlike certain politicians who are in the news a lot. You asked for specific diffs, so for example: after they tried to change "french fries" to "chips", and then to "fries", which was reverted by another editor and then by me, their first comment on the talk page started "Editors of this page insist on pushing an agenda..." I said that "french fries" is a general term in American English covering all types, including what the British call "chips", and cited several dictionaries and the Oxford Companion to Food. They responded "only an uncultured dunce would ever refer to a fry from belgium or the netherlands as a french fry."[1] When I said "fries" is simply a less formal, thus less encyclopedic abbreviation of "french fries", also with sources, they answered "what a joke..."[2] and "absolutely ridiculous"[3] etc. Maybe more maddening than the various insults is that their arguments don't make much logical sense, and they haven't provided a single reliable source that actually backs up anything they've said. Yet they're sticking to it, and keep repeating the edit.
There must be books written about how to deal with that style of interaction, but I wanted to ask you personally. Sometimes when I get discouraged by people behaving badly around here, and feel like I'm losing my patience, just reading your talk page helps. As an admin, you get your share of abuse, but you always seem to stay positive, more so than most people. Doesn't it ever get to you? What do you tell yourself about it? Are you likely to say something about it, or is it more diplomatic and productive to just pretend it didn't happen?
I still don't know how the content dispute will get resolved. Nobody wants to edit war with them, and it doesn't seem like there's much hope they're going to change their mind. I guess I'll go ahead and respond again to their latest points with more sources and policies that contradict them, but so far it hasn't made any difference to them. Seems like I'm spending a lot of time on a small thing, refuting poorly-made and rather antagonistic arguments by someone who doesn't want to listen... not sure how that ends? Anyway, thanks again for your wise words... --IamNotU (talk) 01:35, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
Hi IamNotU! I appreciate your response and I thank you for sharing your honest thoughts here about this situation. It can certainly be a subject that's difficult for some editors to discuss and handle, and I don't blame them one bit. I mean... who enjoys being the recipient of personal attacks, insults, angry words, and heated comments? I certainly don't know anyone that likes it. That's obviously a different story when it comes to thinking of people who like to give personal attacks and put discussions into heated disrepute (which really sucks), but nobody enjoys receiving them. ;-) I'm happy that my user talk page is seen as a good place to visit and read, and (according to the other editors who've told me) for a number of different reasons. I'm sure that's why so many people have added this page to their watchlist (just over 1000 people as of the time of this writing), and why so many people are "talk page stalkers" here. Sure, there have been times where I've felt frustration and stress because of discussions I was involved in on Wikipedia. I'm no God or anything; I'm definitely not perfect and I've made more than my fair share of mistakes on Wikipedia over the years that I've been an editor here. The discussions I can recall where I felt good deal of stress were all situations where I had made a mistake or did something incorrectly, and it caused one or more editors to become upset and "light me up" pretty hard over it. It frustrates me when I discover that I've made a mistake or did something wrong on Wikipedia, and it's definitely never fun to be the subject of heated comments, insults, and ridicule as a result. I always respond to heated discussions, personal attacks, comments, insults, trolling, etc using a "kill em with kindness" level of conduct - regardless of the situation - because, if anything, I (or another editor) can show the community that diff as evidence and demonstrate that the user was given a fair chance to correct their issues, stop the disruptive editing that they've been adding or contributing to, and in a clear and respectful way - and that the issues continued despite the response and the opportunity that was given to them. It makes it easier for action to be taken and sanctions imposed (whether it be blocking, banning, or something else). And... really, in the end, it's the internet... I can't let something small or insignificant compared to other activities and important things in my life upset me, bring me down, and affect my mental and emotional well-being... ;-) Please let me know if I can help you with anything else and I'll be more than happy to do so. My user talk page and the ability to come to me for input, help, or advice is a fully open door and at all times. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:54, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well O. MarnetteD|Talk 05:53, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi MarnetteD! Thank you for taking the time to wish me well, and to toast me with this drink... Which sounds very intriguing, might I add.... I might have to read into this more... LOL. I hope you're doing well, and I wish you a merry Christmas and a great end to your 2019 year. :-) *Oshwah raises his glass toward MarnetteD.* Cheers! *Oshwah downs the entire drink.* ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:26, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Sock?

Per page talk history, from Special:Diff/929972426 eight days ago, a sock puppet posted on random talk pages wishing festive greetings with clever word play involved and was caught by a Checkuser. I would think you'd (and others) appreciate the greeting but I am questioning if these messages should stand or not. I cannot think who that user is a sock of if any but it must have registered from the same IP/IP range as a currently blocked user as WP:SOCK says. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 14:23, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Iggy the Swan - I'd revert and remove those edits if they still happen to be the latest edit made to the particular talk or user talk page. There's no use in giving the user any kind of recognition if we can help it, but I wouldn't go out on a limb and manually remove any edits that can't be easily removed using rollback or automation. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:37, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
These users would be happy but if that was a sock puppet doing it, even though the IP addresses may be shared by multiple people, the administrator who blocked this user removed all the messages before I'd noticed what happened. I'd think the one who blocked this sock would not tell anyone who was previously blocked as the sockmaster. Better not to say who the master is in these cases. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 14:50, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
Iggy the Swan - Indeed; at least the edits and messages were taken care of and removed. I'll typically do the same thing when I run into blatant sock puppet or LTA users who are engaging in the same behavior - remove the messages, block, and move on. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:56, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
Whether the messages are naughty or nice, that's possible block evasion. This discussion is something new I have seen re "any kind of recognition". Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 16:25, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
One more thing, this is rare to find a "good sock" on Wikipedia, one famous example would be User:Prinsipe Ybarro (remember them?) who was on there before I did, now I see who it is upon similar user names. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 16:35, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
Iggy the Swan - Ah, I remember Prinsipe Ybarro. I wouldn't call this user a "good sock" in my definition, though. ;-) This was classic "good hand, bad hand" deception, where My Royal Young was using the Ybarro account for his own deceptive gain (whatever it may be). Sure, I've seen good users make bad choices and then resort to sock puppetry to avoid the punishment for their mistake, but the only "good socks" that exist are those that are in compliance with policy. Users who care and want to be a net positive for the project will follow policy and will appeal their blocks or bans. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:29, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
*facepalm*. I got the definition of good sock wrong there. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 22:15, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
Iggy the Swan - LOL ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:21, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

I think that I merely clarified the piece up by one line, but if you do not like the edit I made, I will not be hurt if you removed it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:E000:84CE:FE00:FD78:A32A:B136:322F (talk) 02:42, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi there! The reason that I reverted your edit here to Alex Lacamoire was because it added unreferenced speculation. How do we know that "[t]his school helped Lacamoire to become successful in his career"? We can't add unreferenced speculation like this - especially to a biography of a living person. Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks for the message, and I wish you a great day and happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:17, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

On the chiropractic page there is a statement that reads “chiropractors are not medical doctors” so if that has to stay there then it is only fair that it states the same transitive fact here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1007:B122:8C63:6CEB:7DA9:8804:56AC (talk) 06:05, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi there! Regarding your edit here to Doctor of Medicine - how do you know that "Medical Doctors are not Chiropractors"? Because it states on Chiropractic that they are not medical doctors (which is indeed true) doesn't mean that we must also state on Doctor of Medicine that "Doctors are not Chiropractors". A doctor is also not an apple or a telephone - we obviously don't need to list that information on the article, do we? No, of course not. Plus, a doctor could also be certified as a Chiropractor if he or she wishes to. So, a Chiropractor could also be a doctor and vice versa. The statement in the article is just attempting to detail exactly what a certification for Chiropractic practice does and does not actually certify - and they do not certify them as Doctors of Medicine. Also, I see that your edits also disruptively removed that content from Doctor of Medicine and other articles, which makes me feel that your edit here was an attempt at disrupting Wikipedia in order to make a point. Please don't do that; it's not helpful to the project, and your input and thoughts are much more useful and likely to be heard and discussed by starting a discussion on the talk page of the article. Please review this policy and guideline page and let me know if you have any questions. Thank you - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:28, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

You deleted my edit that stated there is one human case of mutations in the gene. I'm her mother, and would like to know why relevant information was deleted.

DeaFlemming (talk) 03:43, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi DeaFlemming! Your edit was reverted due to not providing a reliable source to support the changes. Edits to Wikipedia articles must be verifiable with sources that are reliable so that readers can scrutinize and review the information that is being used to prove and support the information written to the Wikipedia article. Without this requirement, Wikipedia would be absolutely nothing and its credibility as an encyclopedia would hold no weight. Please let me know if I can answer any more questions for you, and I'll be more than happy to help! :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:08, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Pending Changes Help

Hi, you've recently granted me the pending changes right (thanks again) and I'm not really sure what the purpose of the comment function is, and the reviewer instructions doesn't really tell me. Do you mind telling me its purpose? Thanks! N0nsensical.system(err0r?)(.log) 12:14, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi NonsensicalSystem! Are you talking about the comment field that you see while you're reviewing a change and choosing whether to either accept the changes or revert them? Think of it as the "edit summary". This is what shows up in the log as your reason for accepting or declining the pending changes. While it's not nearly as important to enter a reason for accepting changes, you definitely want to summarize a reason for declining and reverting pending changes. These pending changes log entries aren't visible by default when you visit the log page; you have to tick the appropriate box to have them display. You'll be able to see them after you do so. ;-) Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be more than happy to answer them and help you. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:05, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Hello. This is Abhay and my username is Abhaythegreat. I have read about you and found out that you are Grandmaster Editor. I respect you for that. I am trying to delete a userpage of mine from when I was 12.

Hi, I am trying to delete a page that I created when I was 12 in sixth grade. I am [REDACTED - Oshwah] and I dont want that image of me or my information out there. I even put where I lived. I don't feel comfortable or safe as long as the page exists; I can't even google my name without the page coming up. If you saw the page, I'm sure you would understand why I want to delete it. I saw in the version history that you edited it at some point, so I thought I would reach out to you. Please help, Imtryingtodeletemypagefromsixthgrade (talk) 15:58, 18 December 2019 (UTC)Zak Keaney

"Collected Poems of Robert Frost (1940)" listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Collected Poems of Robert Frost (1940). Since you had some involvement with the Collected Poems of Robert Frost (1940) redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you wish to do so. Steel1943 (talk) 16:07, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Steel1943 - I just went ahead and G6'd the redirect and closed the discussion. I shouldn't have made it a redirect in the first place, so I'm fine with just fixing my goof. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:17, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Half life mod vs game in development

SO wikipedia now deletes the truth? The truth is Black mesa mod and black mesa game are 2 completely different entities and only the company making the game benefits from incorrectly redirecting the mod page to the new game. If you had simply linked the game at the bottom of The corrected page that would be one thing but to remove it is censorship of the worst kind. In the process of them benefiting your are allowing them to distort the truth. I will bet you didn't even try to verify the facts and simply reverted it. Thank you for the eye opener. As a result my friends and I will no longer be supporting wikipedia in future funding drives. You will no longer need to worry about us attempting to correct pages either since that is obviously frowned upon.

45.72.254.96 (talk) 22:35, 18 December 2019 (UTC)MadDogmatic

No need to respond again as I am swapping IP's and deleting cookies now. As well as making sure people are aware that wikipedia endorses commercial advertising through by censoring page corrections that are linked to commercially provided pages.

Hi there, and thank you for leaving me a message here. The reason that I reverted your edit here to Black mesa mod is because you replaced a redirect with text that was both unnecessary and worded in a non-neutral view (it read like an advertisement). If you feel that the "black mesa mod" and the Black Mesa video game are two completely different things, and if you feel that the "back mesa mod" has enough notability in that it should have its own article, I would start a discussion about it here, so that other editors can weigh in and add information. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. Thanks again for the message, and I wish you a great day and happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:27, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Resting Bitch Face

Hello Oshwah. My name is Taylor Orci. I am the creator of Broken People and creator of the sketch talked about in this article. It says "Broken People" uploaded but I changed it to give myself credit-- Broken People implies a group. I created it but it's only me. The source is me-- literally I am the only one interviewed as creator in any of the articles that were previously sourced on this page. If you google me I am the only creator you will find on this video. I am the primary source. Should I provide my ID? Please let me know what the protocol is here. Thanks, Taylor Orci

Hi Taylororci! Welcome to Wikipedia! What you're doing is disallowed and for many reasons. Not only do you have an obvious conflict of interest with this article subject, you failed to cite a reliable source to support the content you modified, and your edits caused many other concerns in regards to neutrality. Since you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you make any edits or take on any major tasks around here. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be very helpful to you. Most users who take this advice and complete the tutorial tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them and saved them hours of time and frustration they would've experienced otherwise. Please let me know if you have any questions after completing the tutorial, and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:58, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi Margaret Otten! Welcome to Wikipedia! You cannot add links to your own website on Wikipedia like that. This violates many different policies and guidelines, including Wikipedia's policies on advertising and promotion and original research (to name a few). Hi Farhan942! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your question. The external link you added with your edit here to New Year's Eve didn't appear to add any positive contribution or reference to the article. It appeared more like an advertisement regarding the "best destinations to visit" during this holiday. Is there specific content in the article that this external link is beinh added to verify or support as a citation or reference? If so, exactly what content is it and where? Please review Wikipedia's policy and guideline page on external links, and please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions about the policy. Willbb234 - Having read through the discussion you pointed me to, I honestly believe that you gave the exact input and advice that I would have given: You informed the user about conflict of interest, told him that he should absolutely not create the article himself as it'll just ultimately waste his time after it's scrutinized and deleted, and pointed him toward requested articles page and told him that doing nothing was ultimately the right thing to do. As you said to the user: The article will ultimately get created and expanded by users who don't have a conflict of interest with the article subject if the subject is notable enough. My guess is that it probably isn't. And you also pointed him toward the requested edits page in the event that someone does create the article, he can contribute by making requests. I know that he ended up leaving in frustration, and I'm guessing that you probably feel as if you lost an opportunity or did something wrong. I can assure you that this is not the case at all; you were helpful and respectful to the user, and you were clear in your responses and explanations as to what was going on and why, and you pointed him to the correct policies, guidelines, and request pages. I'd just remind him that you're available and happy to help if he runs into any more questions in the future, and that he shouldn't hesitate to reach out to you if he does, and I'd leave it at that. ;-) You did a great job, and I appreciate you for being kind and willing to help the user out. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:15, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

My edits on the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies

Hi Oshwah,

Could you please specify why you considered my edit on the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies page "not constructive": https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Arava_Institute_for_Environmental_Studies&oldid=prev&diff=931632157

The page is at the moment rather descriptive, with many references either missing or based on material published by the institute, and little cross-references to other relevant pages on Wikipedia. I tried to include some information based on academic studies and cross-referenced to environmental peacebuilding (of which the Institute is an important example), so I tend to disagree with your point. Pages of many other institutions also have information of how the respective institutions is conceived by evaluators, the public, critics etc.

Best wishes,

Tobias Tobias Ide (talk) 04:13, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Edit5000 SPI

Hey, I'm sorry that the Edit5001 SPI at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Tyciol turned out to be a bit of a mess. But if Edit5001 isn't Tyciol, I think the whole block should be reversed. Edit5000 made five edits on September 17 and never edited again. Edit5001 registered later on the same day and only that account was used since. Yes, ideally Edit5001 should have acknowledged that he had made edits as Edit5000, but I doubt he was trying to game it because the usernames are so similar. To my best understanding, that is not considered abuse of multiple accounts per the WP:SOCK policy - atleast not worthy of an indefinite block. Also, Edit5001 wasn't given a block notice on his talkpage with the unblock instructions, so that's an omission. Regards, --Pudeo (talk) 10:42, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

Pudeo - I'm inclined to agree with you. If there's no abuse or connection with Tyciol or anyone else as an abusive sock puppet, my reason for blocking has no weight whatsoever. I'm going to reverse the blocks now... Thank you for the message and for sharing your thoughts. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:14, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Hi WikiLeeGordon. In addition to what Oswhah posted above, please don't add links to that YouTube video to any Wikipedia pages for the reasons explained in WP:COPYLINK, WP:ELNEVER and WP:YOUTUBE. It's highly unlikely that the person who uploaded the audio of that particular sermon to YouTube is actually the copyright holder, which means it can't really be used on any Wikipedia pages, and that might have been one of the reasons why it was removed from the article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:20, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

Links

Hi, I'm a newbie here. You removed a link I added on the Automated Content Recognition page. I thought that was okay since I noticed that the page listed Intrasonics which also has an external link. What is the difference between that one and the one I added? thx. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maryannelang (talkcontribs) 08:05, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi Maryannelang, and welcome to Wikipedia! I noticed that your first changes were adding external links to multiple articles and to the same program and website, and I suspected that your account was just being used to advertise the product or the website. Please accept my apologies if this isn't the case; you have to understand that many users attempt to do this daily on Wikipedia, and it's become a significant problem. Please feel free to restore the changes you made to those articles.
Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. Again, I welcome you to Wikipedia and I hope you enjoy your stay. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:12, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) Hi Maryannelang in addition to not adding any external links to Audible Magic's website to any Wikipedia articles, you should probably also add its name to any articles as well unless you can provide a secondary/independent reliable source that can be used to verify the content you're adding. Generally, Wikipedia articles only really should mention something by name encyclopedically relevant to its readers and this tends to mean things which have Wikipedia articles already written about them. There are perhaps many companies which may consider themselves to be ACR technology providers, but there's really no possible way for Wikipedia to list them all; so, Wikipedia has to try keep such mentions as limited as possible and one way of doing this is to limit them to companies with Wikipedia articles written about them. (FWIW, I think entire section should be removed because it's basically a case of name dropping without a real encyclopedic value even though the other companies mentioned do have Wikipedia articles written about them, but that's a different question altogether) Anyway, perhaps Audible Magic should have an article written about it per Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) and if you think that's the case, then you can try to write one. Until that time, however, any mentions of the company anywhere on Wikipedia are going to require some fairly strong sources to be cited in support to be justified. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:16, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

Thegooduser - The only way to be sure is to use it while your antivirus and your firewall are either completely disabled or turned off, or while they're uninstalled. I've known many antivirus and firewall software that offer the ability to "exempt" applications and programs just to find out that they're only allowing them to perform certain additional functions without raising issue, and that they're still under the radar and restricted to some degree by the real-time protection and monitoring offered by the antivirus / firewall. :-/ ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:43, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
Is the dark web dangerous just wondering? --Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 01:45, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
A "dark web" or "deep web" in itself? No. That's just a broad term for a website that's not available on the general World Wide Web due to not being indexed by search engines or by Domain Name System servers. Hence, they just require special software, browsers, settings, or a combination of those in order to access the specific "dark" network or site. I've surfed on the infamous "dark web" (the one you've probably read about online many times)" a couple of times; there were websites that hosted pretty much every bad thing you can imagine (not surprisingly). That being said, a "dark web" or "dark net" in itself isn't what's dangerous or bad, it's the content that some people choose to host that's bad. The principle and philosophical concept is similar to people who use BitTorrent... "torrenting", in itself (using the protocol and a file sharing service to transfer files), is not what's "dangerous" or "illegal"; it's the exact content that's hosted and downloaded that can be (and often times is). To be clear, I'm not advising you to go and check out any dark networks or surf "the dark web"... lol. That whole area, just like BitTorrent, is best left alone if you're not someone who has a deep understanding of computers, software, networking, and how to keep yourself protected. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:54, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
Oshwah Thegooduser, yah, the deep web is just as safe as the clear web, deep web is just stuff like unlisted YouTube videos and your google drive files and shit like that. The Dark web is where you would find illegal content and stuff like that, but a good amount of stuff on the dark web is just stupid pages, not illegal, just dumb. Hi Minorax! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your question. Wow! What a mess! I'm glad you reached out to me and let me know about this... I've blocked both accounts and reverted the article back to the revision it was before they started editing it. In the future, to report users who are engaging in sock puppetry and in violation of policy, you'll file a report at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations. Just follow the instructions under the "How to open an investigation" collapse field, and you'll be able to file a report so that they can be investigated. :-) Please let me know if you have any more questions or if you need any more assistance; I'll be more than happy to help you with anything you need. :-) Thanks again for the message, and I wish you happy editing! :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:47, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. However, WP:RfCu states that "Obvious, disruptive sock puppet ---- Block, no checkuser needed" so filing a report might just be a waste of resource and space. Minorax (talk) 01:51, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
Minorax - Oh yeah, for sure.... for something like this, just do what you did above - flag and admin down and point them toward the damage. However, in cases where urgency isn't dire and when an investigation is warranted, you'll want to visit WP:SPI and get to know and understand the process and how it works, since that noticeboard is the main point of contact regarding the investigation of sock puppetry policy violations. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:57, 24 December 2019 (UTC)

Hello, I don't really see why stating the fact that Paul Darrow did the voice work on the game has any baring on me being neutral or otherwise? Hi Justintuijl, and thanks for messaging me with your thoughts and concerns regarding the revert I made to your edit here to MediEvil. The reason that I reverted your edit was because you stated in the article that Paul Darrow "did a lot of voice work" for the videogame. That's an opinion, which does not belong within an article per Wikipedia's policy on wording content in a neutral point of view. Please review the policy page and let me know if you have any questions. I'll be happy to answer them if you do. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:48, 29 December 2019 (UTC)

Idea for a new article, advice wanted

I think an article about Separated twin pairs would be interesting and useful. Many kids fantasize about having a misplaced identical twin -- and some people do have them.[4] Research uses separated twin pairs. Separated twins are popular in fiction -- e.g. The Parent Trap and Sister, Sister (TV series). In short, an article about "separated twin pairs" could bring together interesting facts from different areas. Any advice, pro, con, or how to? Thanks and I hope you had a fun Christmas. HouseOfChange (talk) 19:43, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi HouseOfChange, and thank you for leaving me a message here with your request for input and advice. I apologize for the extreme delay with responding to your message here. I've been busy lately, and I'm just now catching up with all of the Wikipedia messages, emails, requests, tickets, and discussions I received. As you of course already know, I'll be more than happy to answer your questions and help you. ;-)
Without looking too deeply into the particular subject itself, my initial thought is that I don't believe you'll have an issue in regards to meeting Wikipedia's guidelines on notability, but that's something you'll want to make absolute sure is met, and before you start any kind of serious planning or (Heaven forbid) any construction or writing of the article itself. I cannot stress and emphasize this advice to you enough; if you can leave here and remember only one piece of advice from this discussion in regards to article creation, it's that you must do the research necessary in order to make absolute sure that the article subject you wish to write about meets Wikipedia's guidelines on notability, and as the very first step (other than making sure that an article doesn't already exist on the subject, of course). If you don't do this at all, or if you don't do this first and before you start planning, construction, and writing of the article - you're going to have an extremely frustrating and infuriating experience with article creation on Wikipedia. That mistake can result in having hours, days, if not weeks worth of your time, energy, and effort completely wasted due to planning and writing an article about something that ultimately doesn't deserve its own article in the first place. The time I spent with planning, researching, and writing Windows Push Notification Service or Universal Windows Platform (both were not significantly huge articles upon my first publication of them) was at least 8-10 hours, just to give you an idea with how much time really goes into creating an article. ;-)
I'm fairly sure that there are some famous (and infamous) cases where twin babies were separated from one another at birth (for one reason or another) and then reunited later in life, but again, you'll want to make sure. After you've made sure that the article subject gets the "green light" in respect to notability, you'll want to do some research and plan out exactly what you're going to write in the article. Collect a big list of reliable sources that you can cite and reference in the article, and think about the different sections that would be included - summary paragraph (writing this section very last is my advice), the concept and any origins, any scientific studies that have been conducted (if applicable), notable cases, references / use in media, etc. Afterwards, you'll begin to start piecing the article together - getting an infobox built (if applicable), finding an acceptable image for the infobox, locating the relevant categories that this article should belong to, adding a "see also" and "references" section to the end, and then adding the section headers and the content you're going to include (among other things)...
If you're brand new to the concept of article creation, you should read through this help page as well as this project page for more information and advice. I'd also consider using the new article wizard or the articles for creation project process to make sure that you have the necessary guidance and guardrails... at least until you become proficient with creation. ;-) I hope that my response here was at least somewhat helpful to you. If you have any more questions or if you need any additional input or advice, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to help you further. ;-) Let me know how things go with your creation of this article subject! I'd love to be kept updated! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:00, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks very much, Oshwah, for the time you took to give me such good advice. I will move this topic idea further up my to-do list, hoping to be less busy once February arrives. HouseOfChange (talk) 15:06, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

December 2019

Hello, I'm No1FanofHHT. Today you left a message in my talk page. You said that I made a made a mistake in the article Thani Oruvan. That movie was directed by Mohan Raja.[1] But in the short description, it was entered wrong as 'M. Emran'. No1FanofHHT (talk) 11:21, 29 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi No1FanofHHT! Thank you for messaging me and for providing a source to the changes you made. I apologize for reverting them; please feel free to restore the changes you made. Page Moving

Can you move List of A Certain Scientific Railgun T episodes to A Certain Scientific Railgun T. SpectresWrath (talk) 19:28, 29 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi SpectresWrath! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your request. I'm a bit confused; is A Certain Scientific Railgun T an article about the same exact subject as A Certain Scientific Railgun, or are they two completely different anime series? I see that the articles List of A Certain Scientific Railgun T episodes and List of A Certain Scientific Railgun episodes both exist, as well as A Certain Scientific Railgun T and List of A Certain Scientific Railgun T episodes. I want to avoid duplicating articles and work, as well as avoid making things unnecessarily complicated, if I can do so - can you take a look at these articles and let me know if they're of the same subject? I'll be happy to help once I have a better understanding of these articles. :-) Thanks - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:27, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

CAPTAIN RAJU! I'm so sorry for the late reply here! I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to wish me happy holidays - it meant a lot. :-) I hope you had a great holiday season, and I wish you a great 2020! ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:01, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

Es204L again

Hi Oshwah, sorry to bother you during this festive season but Es204L, a user you issued a final warning to back in May for adding unsourced content, has been making problematic edits again, in particular this series of edits, as well as additional warnings on their talk page. The fact that I checked their contributions for the whole of December and haven't seen them adding sources by themselves is also... worrying, to say the least. I'm not sure what else can be done here. Best regards, ~ KN2731 {talk · contribs} 09:35, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

And now it's turned up at ANI... welp. ~ KN2731 {talk · contribs} 10:43, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
Hi KN2731, and thanks for leaving me a message here and for letting know about the continued issues with this user. I apologize that this response comes after such an extreme delay; I was busy these last two weeks and I'm just now getting caught up with all of the Wikipedia messages, emails, requests, discussions, etc that I've received while I was offline. Fortunately, it appears that this matter was escalated to a subsequent ANI discussion (as you point out above). Having detailed information added to the user's block log for their two-week block appears to have helped the issue and the latest ANI discussion come to a quick and desired close. I remember this ANI discussion quite well, and I predicted at the time that the two week block I imposed wouldn't stop the problems, and that this user would end up indefinitely blocked... but I had to try. I'm sorry that the issues continued, and I hope that they didn't cause too much frustration or aggravation upon you. I'm just happy that (one way or the other) it's no longer a problem. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if I can be of assistance with anything else, and I'll be more than happy to help. My user talk page is always open to you, and you are welcome to message me here any time you need or want. :-) I hope you had a happy and stress-free holiday season and new year's celebration, and I wish you a great day and happy editing. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:13, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

Happy 2020!

Have lots of fun in the New Year, just like this one!   --CiaPan (talk) (talk page stalker) 09:59, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

CiaPan - HA! That's funny, and I've definitely done that before when I've accidentally discovered a keyboard shortcut in Visual Studio that I didn't know existed. "What just happened?" Control-Z. "What'd I push?" Tries key combinations again. :-P ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:15, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
