Substituted templates

edit

When this template is substituted, from e.g. Template:WikiProject Kentucky, it includes blank parameters for category and class. Wouldn't be it better if it didn't include them by default? The category parameter should be rarely needed, and the class parameter ideally isn't needed going forward either given WP:PIQA. -Kj cheetham (talk) 21:22, 12 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Kj cheetham: That's a modifiaction that you need to make to Template:WikiProject Kentucky, not this one. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 11:25, 13 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Redrose64: Ah yes of course, my mistake. In that case to implement what I was originally thinking would mean changing a lot of wrapper templates, and I suspect the hassle isn't worth the benefit, so I'll leave it. -Kj cheetham (talk) 13:42, 13 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Kj cheetham I removed all the category and class substitutions from wrappers of this template except for {{WikiProject Iowa}} and {{WikiProject New Orleans}}, the former of which was template protected and the latter of which I could not figure out how it worked. New parameter

edit

Hello @Funandtrvl! So I found an inactive taskforce page Wikipedia:WikiProject Jewish-Americans which was, by the looks of it, abandoned mid-creation due to the creator suddenly abandoning Wikipedia. Since I have an interest in Jewish-American history and culture, I decided the page can be tidied up and added to the appropriate articles.

One issue the creator had was with parameters. I tried to add them too but I'm afraid I can't figure it out at all. If you can be so kind to help put in the |Jewish-Americans=yes and |Jewish-Americans-importance= to {{WikiProject United States}} and we can, hopefully, get this up and running. Omnis Scientia (talk) 08:48, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Any advice on how to spoof up and integrate the taskforce into the WP:USA would also be welcome. I tried at the talk page but I didn't get any response from anyone. Omnis Scientia (talk) 08:52, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm adding fully protected template, I may not be able to get to this right away, thanks! --Funandtrvl (talk) 19:07, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the response! :) And no worries either. Omnis Scientia (talk) 19:28, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see no difference between the present template and its sandbox. Therefore,   Not done: please make your requested changes to the template's sandbox first; see WP:TESTCASES. Please note, this is not an assurance that I will implement any proposed changes. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:11, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Redrose64, sorry, I don't understand. Would appreciate some guidance. Thank you! Omnis Scientia (talk) 20:17, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
You requested an edit. But you have not put your proposed edit into the template's sandbox, let alone demonstrated it at the testcases page. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:50, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Redrose64, Ah alright, I see now. Thank you for your response. This is my first time requesting such an edit so I didn't know the procedure. Will do that and then return here. Omnis Scientia (talk) 21:59, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Redrose64, hello there. I've edited the sandbox and also demonstrated it at the testcase page as you have asked. I hope I did it right. Omnis Scientia (talk) 20:29, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Paine Ellsworth it appears this edit broke the template. Not sure why or how, but could you please undo it for now before figuring out what went wrong so that editors can use it again? QuietHere (talk | contributions) 20:26, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
To editor QuietHere: I don't understand, this template is used on almost 700,000 pages, so we should make very sure before editing. If you're not sure why or how it's broken, then how do you know that it's broken at all? You must have seen some symptom of a problem, so please describe it and show an example or two. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 21:16, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Paine Ellsworth well, the current template page says "The time allocated for running scripts has expired" twice in bolded red text, while it looked perfectly normal in the version before your most recent edit, and when I tried to add it to Talk:Never Leave earlier, Rater said the banner didn't exist. Perhaps something else went wrong, but that seems like the most obvious cause to me. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 21:35, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@QuietHere: This problem is nothing to do with Paine's edit, nor even this template; it's Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 213#The time allocated for running scripts has expired. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:11, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
And I see it's been fixed now. Thanks, and apologies for the confusion. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 22:46, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
As the devs might say, the function is not broken, it is non-performant. (T278206) In other words this is a performance problem that the devs have been working on time and again for a few years now. Apparently considered low priority compared with other challenges, you can expect to see the allocation error message again. I caught it when I synchronized the project template's sandbox with the live template to run some tests. As has been mentioned in previous discussions, the page just had to be purged and it loaded with no error message. I see you added the project template to Talk:Never Leave without hassle. I hope you're as glad as I am that a revert of this edit is not required. WHEW I say as I wipe the sweat from my brow. Best to you, and thank you for being attentive to this issue! P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 23:12, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
For what it's worth, it wasn't entirely without hassle, as Rater still isn't acknowledging the template's existence. I will bring up that concern on Rater's talk page and hopefully that can be resolved as well. And yes, I am glad that your edit wasn't the problem, especially since I couldn't see any reason why it would be wrong. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 06:00, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Talk page already had a discussion and an effective solution. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 06:06, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
