Poles → Polish people – I have been thinking about this for years, and I just don't see how there can be a primary topic for "Poles" when the common noun "pole" has such an array of meanings (note that "Poles" referring to Polish people is also a plural noun, an individual Polish person being a "Pole", and if they come from one of the extreme ends of the country, a "North Pole" or "South Pole"). There has recently been news coverage of the magnetic poles shifting, and imagery of poles on other planets, and a steady increase in the popularity of pole dancing. With 32,000 views per day going to the collection of articles at Pole, the thousand-per-day or so going to this title clearly falls short of primacy for the name. Move this article, merge Poles (disambiguation) into Pole, and redirect this title there as well. BD2412 T 21:24, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

• Support per nom, and the DABMERGE as well. Clearly ambiguous, with the many uses of poles. This article was created in July 2003 and has had its main title header moved between Poles and Polish people a number of times, starting in January 2006. Ultimately, it depends upon which form is a more natural linguistic fit — some headers use the forms Austrians, Estonians, Hungarians, etc while other headers use the forms British people, French people, Dutch people, etc. In the case at hand, Polish people is a more intuitive fit than Poles. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 03:28, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

• Comment After the move, Poles will be a redirect to a dab. It has 8,284 incoming links (including 1,623 direct), most of which will need changing to Polish people but some of which may have better targets such as geographical pole. I don't see that as a valid reason to oppose the move, but we may need to prepare to deal with its fallout. I've notified WT:WPDIS. Certes (talk) 12:34, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Polish people instead of Poles?

I'm not sure why "British people," "French people," "Dutch people" were used as examples. There are no formal nouns for representatives of these nations, "Brits" is colloquial, as is "Frenchies" and so on. Poles, on the other hand, is a perfectly fine noun. There's also no confusion because there's no other article referring to "Poles." Magnetic pole - OK. South Pole - OK. But not "Poles." This move was nonsensical, forced through by a couple users in a hurried mood, and should be reversed IMO. Malecide (talk) 04:54, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
