Untitled edit

I think you’ve done a really good job with the opening and it seems very interesting so far…. The only comments that I have would be to get rid of the word “just” in the second paragraph in the sentence “ In 2009, Sports Center dedicated just 1.4% of its airtime to women sports…” You have references for everything and I can’t think of any more problems or issues with what you have so far! This article looks really solid so far. It seems to be written from a neutral standpoint which is tough when writing about a topic of this nature. For my addition, I simply inserted another statistic about the men and women's soccer teams in Arsenal receiving unequal pay amounts for winning the same championship. I think you've done a really great job on this article and you continue to remain unbiased throughout the whole thing which is awesome. I think it would benefit the article if you included more specific instances of misogyny in sports that you found in your research. Like examples where women were not allowed to play a sport, or cases that made national attention. other than that I think you're doing great and your article is very well written!! Proposal to rename the article edit

I have some doubts about this article because title and content do not match. Most of the content is about a gender gap in sport but NOT about hatred against women – misogyny. Also in a brief scan of the sources I did not find explicit mentioning of misogyny. Therefore, I would propose to rename the article to “Gender gap in sport” or “Underrepresentation of women in sport” or something comparable. Lucentcalendar (talk) 13:14, 13 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

The article could also be merged into the article Women's sports which has large overlaps with this article.Lucentcalendar (talk) 07:24, 20 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

unbalanced and somewhat biased edit

found that reading through this there is quite biased writing in favour of the underrepresented women, instead of simply presenting evidence. Of course there is a gap in the opportunities for men and for women, but Wikipedia isn't used to convince the reader of an argument. Also, there is no mention of the fact that women in sports are paid less because of the smaller market for womens' sports, which is due to the established nature of most professional Mens leagues compared to that of the more recent womens leagues. People often forget that leagues and tournaments can only pay the participants based on their revenue, so it is less discrimination and simply due to a lower attendance and broadcasting coverage. SportsCenter can't broadcast something without a solid viewing, and finances come into play there, for finances are their focus, not equal representation of sports. I could complain that they discriminate against lacrosse players, but I understand the lack of market and that the decision to broadcast an NLL game is not financially smart. Tennis is the most balanced paying sport there is for both genders because firstly it has the highest following, which results in more broadcasting, which results in a higher revenue. Other tournaments/leagues, such as the NWHL, are very underwatched, and therefore cannot pay its players as much as the NHL, which has a higher following. This is not the result of intentional sexism and discrimination by every man at ESPN, but a financial decision that is natural for them to make. I completely agree womens sports need more screen time, but it isn't something that can be instantly fixed. It needs a solid following (which is difficult for a less-established league) before anything can come. Take hockey for example. Womens' hockey will never be more popular than Mens simply because it is slightly slower, and there is less contact, which is a large reason for its popularity. Womens tennis and mens tennis are the closest in the styles of play, which makes them more equal in entertainment. Again, the largest reason for the pay gap in Mens sports to Womens sports is not any sort of sexism, it is the revenue of the league or tournament in question. This one fact is always ignored by most feminist writers speaking on the world of sports, but I'm proposing a category be added on it Iheartthestrals (talk) 06:48, 12 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Additions to the page edit

I'm a student at LSU in a women's studies class and I am going to add to this page. These are the things that I want to add:

The first section I plan to add is in regards to women in management positions in the sport industry. The next section will be about opportunities that women are offered compared to men in the same field as well as some statistics on how the positions offered has changed over the years. Another section that I plan to add will discuss inappropriate behavior that women face when working in the sport industry.

I feel that these sections will give a greater insight on how women are treated in a male driven industry. Clearly they are paid less but I want to focus on how differently they are treated and the fewer number of opportunities they have to be successful in this industry.

Things to add edit

Hello! I am a student from the University of Louisville and I am planning on editing this page. Some things I would like to add/change are as follows:

There are plenty of grammatical errors throughout the entirety of the article that I plan to correct. There are also a lot of statements that seem to be "original research" that I intend on looking into and correcting/removing if they are an issue. I also hope to add more information and statistics in the pay gap section and update older, out of date statistics. "Recently," rather than an exact time is also used frequently throughout the article and I plan to fix this as best I can. I think that "sexual harassment in the workplace" should be its own section rather than under the title "Women in sports management positions" as this does not really fit in this category. I also want to add to the "sexual harassment in the workplace" section with the Larry Nassar scandal. An annotated bibliography for the sources I plan to use can be found on my sand box: User:Steminist/sandbox

Feedback is greatly encouraged. Thank you! Steminist (talk) 23:41, 10 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

I think that high-profile celebrities, especially professional athletes, should be brought to task for engaging in nominally legal yet unquestionably exploitative commercial behaviors, i.e. frequent "gentlemen's club" attendance. This behavior has NEVER contributed to the betterment of women; moreover it effectively creates a caste system where the unfortunate women ensnared in that industry as its output can seldom escape the conditions and expectations of lower societal worth. If one is daring, a particular NBA superstar currently playing in Houston, TX could be called out for chronic misogynistic behavior in this vein.2603:8080:2008:BE4F:295A:B11:6173:4661 (talk) 16:06, 22 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Section on Title IX edit

I believe the Wikipedia article does not discuss the topic of Sports Scholarships and how they have improved in the number of men’s and women’s scholarships have been made available or have been used since the Title IX was established. I would like to include an addition to this. Gatorinator (talk) 23:04, 16 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Section Re-order edit

I believe that the Wiki Section on Misogyny should be moved in front of the Wiki Section on the Gender Gap, mainly because it begins to go more in-depth on the topic of misogyny. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gatorinator (talkcontribs) 01:08, 24 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Coverage in Media Section edit

I noticed that in the "Coverage in Media" Portion of this article does not have the correct citations. I have attempted contact with the user that made the original edit on April 11th 2018 adding the section with the wrong citations and will be removing said portion until user Watmodjo provides the correct citations. That way the article will remain professional.

Thanks,

Gatorinator (talk) 20:42, 3 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

REMOVED PORTION:

" There is little improvement in the coverage of women's sports by the media. The Women's Sports and Fitness Foundation reports that only 7% percent of media coverage is devoted to women's sport. This is discouraging based on findings that over 60% of sports fans would like to watch women's sport on television. Discouragingly, the media coverage of these sports is dominated by terms, such as older, pregnant, married and unmarried thus shifting the attention from sports. In the same regard, Kelly (1) reports that men are three times likely to be mentioned in sports media than women, in a language that focuses on the sporting aspect and not the aesthetic aspects.

The efforts to popularize women sports through media coverage dependents on the online presence of broadcasters on social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter. However, Hull (4) reports that little efforts are being undertaken in respect to the same. A sampling of an estimated twenty thousand tweets involving two hundred broadcasters of local sports in the United States of America showed that only 5% of the tweets were related to women's sports (Hull 5). Besides, the study revealed worrying findings that female sports broadcasters tweeted more on men's sports than women's. Worst of all, the sports broadcasters in larger cities were found to be unlikely to report on women's sports.

Despite the increasing viewership of women's sports, there remains a larger disparity in the sports coverage for men's and women's sports. Findings of a study by the Birmingham University indicates the top six newspaper in Britain had fewer stories on women sports than the previous year when Olympics was taking place. Stories concerning women's sports were outnumbered by the stories on men's sport by twenty times. These newspapers were: The mirror, sun, Times, Mail, Express, Mirror, and Telegraph. The same study explains that a year after the 2012 Olympics, 97% of the sports coverage was on men's sports (Martinson 1). Furthermore, the study went ahead to link this scenario to the shortage of female sports journalists. Pay Gap edit

I will be making a couple edits to the section on Pay gap in regards to women's soccer in the United States and abroad. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gatorinator (talkcontribs) 22:53, 4 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Citations Needed edit

The beginning of the page needs a citation, where does the definition of misogyny come from? Annamberg07 (talk) 17:39, 15 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Citation 35 is unreliable and needs to be replaced. The information can be found elsewhere. Annamberg07 (talk) 17:06, 1 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Section on the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics edit

I am going to be editing the World Cup section. It is so far mainly focused on the American side of things and I am going to aim to bring in international views. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Annamberg07 (talkcontribs) 17:07, 22 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Adding Olympics to the section to help showcase discrimination in global sporting events Annamberg07 (talk) 17:34, 22 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Section on sexual harassment in the workplace edit

I am going to be editing the section on sexual harassment in the workplace. I plan on reorganizing the section to present the information in a more clear and cohesive order. Starting out with what sexual harassment is and what it looks like for women in the sports industry, and moving on to discuss the causes and effects of sexual harassment in relation to women in the sports industry. In doing so, I will remove any current information that is biased, unrelated to sexual harassment, or not specific to women in the sports industry, and will add beneficial information I have obtained from different scholarly, peer-reviewed sources.
